Residents gather for annual festival
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Medford Sun
Medford residents gathered on
Main Street for wine tasting, food,
art, local products and family fun
on Sunday, June 2 at the annual
Medford Art, Wine and Music
Festival.
The heat wave didnt stop
guests from attending, drawing
more visitors than the previous
year, according to Dave Vaughn,
Medford Business Association ex-
ecutive director.
We had twice the turnout [to
the festival] than we did last
year, Vaughn said. I think its
the economy.
According to Vaughn, the equa-
tion was no different from last
year. The MBA did the same
amount of advertising as previ-
ous years, but had a much larger
turnout this year.
The only difference we had
this year was adding the car
show, Vaughn said.
Seven South Jersey wineries
were in attendance, in addition to
six food vendors and more than 30
artists and crafters, who dis-
played and sold artwork.
The Medford Arts Center and
the Medford Business Associa-
tion again worked together. This
is the fourth year weve worked
together as a team. It shows what
organizations can do as a team, SHANNON CAULFIELD/The Medford Sun

Medford council discusses
tax exemption and abatement
By SHANNON CAULFIED
The Medford Sun
Medford Council discussed the
framework for tax exemption and
abatement during its recent meet-
ing.
According to Deputy Mayor
Chris Buoni, an ordinance will be
prepared for the next meeting.
They have directed that the ex-
emption and abatement will be fi-
nalized for consideration at the
June 18 township meeting, town-
ship manager Chris Schultz said.
Its significant for people who
own businesses and those who are
interested in investing in our
town, Buoni said.
Main Street is deemed a reha-
bilitation zone, according to
Buoni. No new construction will
be charged taxes for five years,
which can be negotiated by coun-
cil. The other item is tax exemp-
tion for businesses.
We can cut their taxes pretty
substantially and really increase
economic activity downtown,
Buoni said. We want investors
and developers to know were
very much interested in their
business.
Council is continually working
on businesses coming into the vil-
lage. According to Schultz, the
builder that purchased the bank is
still finalizing various details
prior to coming formally before
the township.
I think the Pop Shop is really
just the start of things, and
its going to make the downtown
a much more lively area. Im
looking forward to it, Buoni
said.
New and different businesses
will have the opportunity to set up
shop on Main Street.
Council introduced an ordi-
nance amending the code to per-
mit brew pubs and wineries and
wine-making facilities to the vil-
lage, Schultz said. The law did
not contemplate these activities 30
or so years ago when the ordi-
nance was put in place.
In other news:
Council discussed the opportu-
nity of the Burlington County
Municipal Park Grant. According
to Schultz, the county granted an
extension to all municipalities to
June 28 for submission.
Our main goal is to fund proj-
ects we need and not be in a posi-
tion where we cant pay our bills
again, Buoni said.
Discussion will continue at the
next meeting, scheduled for Tues-
day, June 18 at 7:30 at the Public
Safety Building, at 91 Union St.

More than 5,000 voters turned
out for the primary elections to
vote for Medford Township Coun-
cil members, in addition to county
and state candidates.
Current Republican council
members drew 4,130 votes, 1,141 of
which went to council member
Chuck Watson, 1,253 to Jeffrey
Beenstock and 899 to James
Randy Pace, election results in-
dicated, pushing them forward to
the general election.
Republican challenger Stanley
Filimon drew 833 votes. It was not
enough to secure a spot on the No-
vember ballot.
Additionally, three Democratic
candidates will be campaigning
for a position on the council.
Becca Stein Gutwirth received 312
votes, Brett Maria Blyshak re-
ceived 275, and George Youngkin
received 286.
All six candidates will appear
on the November ballot, since
there are three seats on the coun-
cil up for election. The primaries
were uncontested in the Demo-
cratic Party.
Incumbent Republican Gov.
Christie will be facing Democratic
candidate Barbara Buono.
General elections are sched-
uled for Tuesday, Nov. 5. For voter

The following items are on file
with the Medford Township Po-
lice Department:
On June 1 at 5:38 p.m., while in-
vestigating a separate incident,
Medford Police were advised of a
dog left in a parked vehicle in the
parking lot of ShopRite, located
at 208 Route 70, in 90-degree heat.
Upon arrival, police observed
the dog in the unoccupied vehi-
cle.
While checking on the dog, of-
ficers observed a suspected mari-
juana cigarette in the cup holder
of the vehicle.
The registered owner of the
vehicle exited the business and
confirmed the vehicle and dog be-
longed to her.
The suspect was subsequently
arrested and transported to the
Medford Police Administration
Building for processing.
She was charged with posses-
sion of marijuana under 50
grams and possession of CDS
paraphernalia and released.
On June 4 at 2:52 p.m., Medford
Township Police responded to a
residence on Sunrise Court for
the report of a burglary.
The investigation revealed that
an unknown subject shattered
the glass in the rear sliding door
and entered the residence.
Several pieces of jewelry were
stolen from the residence.
This incident is under investi-
gation by the Medford Township
Police Criminal Investigations
Bureau.
On June 4 at 7:56 a.m., patrols
were dispatched to Route 70, near
Eugenia Drive for a report of a
motor vehicle collision involving
four vehicles with injuries.

Homestead rebate for
seniors has been cut
Your article, May 22-28, Is
Christies tax cap working? a
step in the right direction is
probably a yes, but Ill tell you
what Gov. Christie has done,
which is a step in the wrong di-
rection.
The homestead rebate for sen-
ior citizens has been cut by the
Christie administration.
The cut has probably only
been realized by eligible taxpay-
ers 65 and over. The require-
ments for the senior homestead
rebate are (1) be 65 years or
older (2) property taxes to be
paid by the homeowner and (3)
our gross income to be lower
than a specified amount.
Since Gov. Christie has come
into office, I have paid $6,500
more in property taxes.
Seniors pay the full tax bill,
then are reimbursed an ap-
proved amount of their money,
by the state.
Im sure every eligible senior
in the state is well aware of this
increase in property taxes since
the governor came into office.
What other group of taxpay-
ers in the state has been hit
harder? If seniors leave their
homes to reduce their No. 1 in
the country property tax bur-
den, they would probably be re-
placed by a father, mother and
two or three children.
This would significantly in-
crease financial burdens for
New Jersey.

T
he late U.S. Sen. Frank Lauten-
berg wasnt even in his grave
yet, when the political maneu-
vering began.
The death of the 89-year-old New
Jersey Democrat on June 3 presented
Gov. Christie with several options, but
he has chosen one that will cost tax-
payers wallets dearly. Instead of al-
lowing voters to choose Lautenbergs
successor in the Nov. 5 general elec-
tion, hes ordering a special election
less than three weeks before on
Wednesday, Oct. 16.
The cost of an Aug. 13 primary and
an Oct. 16 special election is $24 mil-
lion. Since the governor has already
chosen New Jersey Attorney General
Jeff Chiesa as the interim replace-
ment, we wonder whats the harm in
saving taxpayers a bundle by allowing
Chiesa to hang on to the job three
weeks longer so that the cost of a spe-
cial election can be avoided. Democra-
cy is priceless, but is something else
going on here?
State Sen. Barbara Buono, whose
gubernatorial campaign against
Christie might have benefited from the
coattails of a strong Democratic U.S.
Senate candidate on the same Nov. 5
ballot, wasted no time taking the offen-
sive.
Earlier this year, the governor
cited money as to why he vetoed early
voting, Buono said in a press state-
ment, referring to Christies May 9
veto of legislation that would have let
people cast ballots during a 15-day pe-
riod before Election Day. However, de-
spite costing millions of dollars, Gov.
Christie made the cynical and arro-
gant decision to call a special election
in October.
Buono may not be without her own
political motives in this controversy,
but she makes a valid point.
As the governor, Christie has the
right to take advantage of the power of
his position, and he did just that. We
just wish it wasnt costing so much.
Christies costly move
Special election for Lautenbergs replacement will cost $24M

Vaughn said. The MBA looks to
work with other organizations in
town.
Musicians lined Main Street
playing acoustic, jazz and contem-
porary hits for crowds as part of
the festival.
You have businesses putting
their best foot forward here on
Main Street, Vaughn said.
Theyre trying to make things
viable for themselves and for
those that come from surround-
ing towns. Its what makes it
worth it to come to Medford.
Holding festivals on Main
Street reminds residents why
community is important. Visitors
have experienced Main Street in
numerous ways throughout the
year, from the Halloween Parade
in the fall, to the Dickens Festival
in the winter, and the Art, Wine
and Music Festival in the spring.
This is an iconic festival for
Medford. Its our seventh year,
Vaughn said. The Historic Vil-
lage of Medford is the focal point
of the town. We want to bring vis-
itors and foot traffic to local busi-
nesses in town.
The event showcasing Main
Street comes on the heels of
major redevelopment to the area,
including the sale of the bank sit-
ting on Main and Bank streets.
It means theres significant in-
terest in the downtown area,
Economic Development Advisory
Committee Chairman Mike Pag-
notta told The Sun in April.
Symbolically, that was impor-
tant. Selling it marks the end of
recession.
According to Pagnotta, the
building was vacant for five to
seven years. Additionally, the
EDC has big plans for the down-
town area, with the help of the
toolbox township council is
providing, including the new sign
ordinance, which was passed ear-
lier this year.
Furthermore, the number of
vacancies has been reduced with
businesses looking at the avail-
able spaces.
According to Pagnotta, plans
for other major changes on Main
Street are currently being devel-
oped.
Its just a real good event on
Main Street again, Vaughn said.
The Medford Business Associa-
tion is working on the Taste of
Medford, which will be held at
Kirbys Mill again.

Clothes dryers are responsible for an estimated 15,000
home fires in the U.S. annually, causing over $84 million in
property damage. The leading cause of the fires was lint
build-up in the exhaust system.
COITs Dryer Vent Cleaning will help reduce the lint build-
up in a typical transition hose. Plus, our skilled technicians
can remove the dust, pollens and contaminants from yours
homes air duct system, resulting in clean
fresh air and improved efficiency.
