Part B (60 marks)

Write about 400 words on any ONE of the following topics: 2. Learning English through Sports Communication Your school wants to make sports more entertaining for students. As the president of the Sports Union, you have been asked by the principal to write a proposal on a new sports event. Write the proposal outlining your idea for the event and giving reasons for your suggestion.

3. Learning English through Drama You are the secretary of the Drama Club. The Club has planned to stage a play about family relationships in which family members of your club members will be involved. Your teacher, Mr. Wong, likes the idea and wants to know more about the story and the arrangements. Write a letter to Mr. Wong describing the story and explaining how family members can take part in the production of the play. End your letter by stressing the benefits of this activity. 4. Learning English through Poems and Songs You just watched a music video by a rock band on a popular television channel for young people. You were shocked by the content. Violent images were shown in the video. The lyrics also encouraged young people to rebel against their family, schools and society. Write a letter of complaint to the television station. State what you found offensive about the lyrics and images of the video. Explain why you think the video is not suitable for teenagers and what action should be taken by the television station. 5. Learning English through Debating Last night, your sister and your father talked about meeting people on the Internet. Your father thought it was not good and a waste of time to make friends using instant messaging tools and social networking sites., but your sister thought he was being unreasonable. Finally, their conversation turned into a quarrel. You heard the whole conversation and wish to write about this family debate on your personal weblog. Describe what happened and the viewpoints they expressed. Finish your weblog entry by stating whom you support and why.

6. Learning English through Short Stories You are writing a play about a teenage drug addict, Nicky, In one act, Nicky is sent to prison for drug trafficking. In a prison scene, he feels regretful and writes a letter to his parents reflecting on what he has done. The letter will be read by the narrator while it is being written onstage. Write the script of the letter.

7. Learning English through Popular Culture You are a member of the English Club in your school. You are asked to write an editorial for the school magazine on the following statement: Free downloading of music is good for musicians and consumers of music. In your editorial, state whether you agree or disagree with the statement and explain the reasons for your response. Give your essay a title.

8. Learning English through Workplace Communication You and your best friend have started a small business. It has become quite successful with the help of the Internet. The Trade and Development Council has invited you to give a speech about your professional success in a seminar titled Business on the Internet. Write the speech describing the development of your business and illustrating how the Internet led to its success.
