0 Introduction
Printer drivers are hardware that control the printer and transmit text and images displayed on the monitor of the PC to the printer. This guide is designed to help you understand the features of the various Canon printer drivers for the imagePROGRAF series and their advantages over the competition. This information will help you sell the products that best meet the needs of your customer.

1 Types and uses of drivers

The following drivers are provided standard when you purchase a Canon imagePROGRAF series large format printer. Using the driver that best matches the customer's needs allows high-quality printing that exhibits the full capabilities of the printer.

Types of drivers described in this chapter imagePROGRAF Printer Driver for Windows (32-bit, 64-bit) imagePROGRAF Printer Driver for Macintosh (CUPS, Tioga) imagePROGRAF HDI drivers (5-color printers only) imagePROGRAF Print Plug-in for Photoshop (Graphic Arts 8 and 12 color printers only) imagePROGRAF Print Plug-in for Digital Photo Professional (Graphic Arts 8 and 12 color printers only)

1.1

imagePROGRAF printer driver

This is the basic driver for printing. Users can simply select printing for their specific application from the menu and configure advanced settings to create printouts for their needs.

1.1.1

For Windows 32-bit/64-bit

Canon provides a lineup of drivers for 32 and 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows.

32-bit printer driver

This printer driver supports the 32-bit OS and applications.

64-bit printer driver

The 64-bit driver is for users who have chosen to install a 64-bit environment and use graphics and other applications that handle large amounts of data.

Features
The major feature of a 64-bit OS is that, compared with a 32-bit OS, it allows expansion of the maximum PC memory size. A 32-bit OS has a "3 GB wall" where the OS will only recognize 3 GB of memory, even if the PC's physical memory can be expanded to 4 GB. A 32-bit OS is not meant for running software that places heavy demands on the system. A 64-bit OS has no limit and can use over 4 GB of memory, making it perfect for difficult processing.

1.1.2

Macintosh CUPS driver/Tioga driver

Canon provides printer drivers for two OS versions.

CUPS driver
This driver provides high-speed data processing because it is equipped with Canon's original ultra highspeed renderer. It is the primary driver for future Macintosh systems. Supported OS: Mac OS 10.5, OS 10.4 (*1), OS 10.3 (*1) (*1) Support planned for models after the iPF6000S

Tioga driver
This driver is based on the existing print architecture inherited from OS 9. Supported OS: Mac OS 10.4, 10.3

1.2

imagePROGRAF HDI drivers

HDI drivers are special printer drivers that support the architecture HDI (Heidi Device Interface) used by AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT from Autodesk. Recently it has become commonplace to use a driver when outputting from AutoCAD since it improves the processing speed. However, it is also appropriate for users who do not want to change their existing print workflow.

Features
Optimal settings can be automatically configured to match your current version of AutoCAD. High quality prints using types of paper regularly used for CAD, such as normal and tracing paper. You can print diagrams with the same color and brightness by configuring the "Color matching" and "Brightness" settings in the "Custom properties" window. You can configure advanced settings for your paper type by configuring the "Ink drying time" and the "Roll safety margins" in the "Advanced paper settings" window.

1.3

imagePROGRAF Print Plug-in for Photoshop

Perfect for users who want to edit data in Photoshop and make high-quality printouts.
This Plug-in supports input and processing of Adobe RGB 16-bit images edited with Photoshop and creates efficient printouts of images that have a wide color range and smooth gradation. You can make high-quality printouts by checking images of print results using various preview functions and by adjusting the color and layout.

Features
[16-bit processing] When using a printer driver to process image data, each color is limited to 8-bit processing depending on the OS you are using. With the Plug-in it is possible to do 16-bit internal processing of 16-bit image data to produce extremely smooth gradation.

[Real-time preview] Unlike a printer driver, with the Plug-in you can preview in realtime the adjustments to color or layout. Being able to check the image of the print out improves efficiency because you do not need to print the document every time you change a setting.

Real-time preview

[Managing print settings] The Plug-in automatically saves print settings as [Print History] when a document is printed. By saving print settings from the history to [Favorites] you can achieve consistent print results. You can also use the print settings in [Print History] and [Favorites] for other images.

Purpose Appropriate for general color printing. Monochrome is for printing of continuous tone color data using halftones of gray. Gray (halftone) parts use color ink because they are CMY process black. Prevents black from becoming the dominant color to better reproduce black and white pictures. Uses a small amount of ink to allow adjustment of tone even with dark color inks. Color settings for CAD make for easy reading when applied to color designs and line drawings. Used when there are many colors. This CAD color setting improves the visibility of blacks by setting the colors a little brighter. Halftones are also printed with black ink. Color ink is not used for images. (*Uses color ink when necessary to maintain performance of the printer and nozzles.) Parts of the image that do no use color are printed in black. There are no halftones because the image is black or white.

2.4

Black and white picture mode that controls the gray balance

The use of BK (black), GY (gray), and PGY (photo gray) inks significantly improves the expression of gray halftones. The additinal use of PGY (Photo Gray) in 12-color models provides for even further improvement.
This creates incredibly smooth gradation without the dominance of a single color and subtle images without dark areas that are too black.

Improvement of the black and white picture functions using 2D color adjustment

Grayscale adjustment interface screen

Using this interface, you can make detailed color adjustments, such as cool, pure, and warm black adjustments to widen the expressive power of monochrome photos. It supports user settings to more closely reflect the user's intentions. [Cool black adjustment] Produces cool blacks. Gray tones utilizing blues create even tighter images. [Pure black adjustment] Produces a neutral black that is in-between cool and warm black. [Warm black adjustment] Produces warm blacks. Gray tones utilizing reds produce even more vibrant images.

Reflect color changes in the sample image

Works with grayscale adjustments to change the colors of the sample image, allowing you to preview the output.

2.5

Color reproduction that supports Adobe RGB

You can output the wide color range of Adobe RGB from the driver compensation mode when printing from software that supports Adobe RGB.

Switch when printing from applications that support the Adobe RGB color space.

Color (CAD)

Color settings for optimal "Line Drawing/Text" in CAD

Select "Line Drawing/Text" to select "Color (CAD)", the color design specifically for CAD, in addition to the color settings for pictures. The "Color (CAD)" color settings have been designed to make red, blue, and green more easy to see, increasing the visibility of lines in diagrams.

Color (CAD) light

Compared with "Color (CAD)", "Color (CAD) light" sets colors a little brighter (especially in the blue to green range) to increase the visibility of that color when overlapping with black. It is perfect for color diagrams that use multiple colors.

Monochrome (BK ink)

Depending on the application, CAD diagrams are often printed in black and white. "Monochrome (BK ink)" is best for those users using their printer mainly for black and white printing to print clear reproductions using only black ink. Only black ink is used for drawings in this mode. (A small amount of color ink is used to maintain head performance and reactive cyan ink.)

Monochrome Bitmap
This is used to make clear reproductions in black and white for 2-tone diagrams (black and white) without half-tones in CAD line drawings.

2.8

Character sharpness processing

The 5-color (CAD) models are equipped with a sharpen text feature, this is an image processor that sharpens characters in data that has mix of text, pictures, and graphics to clearly print characters without blurring.

2.9

Enhancing fine lines

This function improves the visibility of fine lines by adding pixels to wide lines at the rendered resolution using the GDI drawing command when printing from CAD applications like AutoCAD.

[Enhanced fine lines] 1 pixel line -> drawn as a 2 pixel line 2 pixel line -> drawn as a 3 pixel line

2.10

Office mode

The Canon Printer Driver has a special office mode that prints easy-to-read office documents and handouts.
The office mode improves the readability of documents by reproducing bright graphics and black text. Also, the driver determines objects in image data to automatically switch between 1 pass and 2 pass print modes. Single pass mode is used for pages with lots of text while the driver automatically switches to 2 pass mode for pages with lots of image data, achieving both speed and image quality. Only standard mode is set to allow easy printing by anyone in your office.

2.16

Displaying the preview screen

Large format printers are thought to be difficult to use. In office environments, it is difficult for people to understand an image's orientation, size, and position if they are unfamiliar with printing on roll paper. The iPF driver offers imagePROGRAF Preview to handle this problems. Using imagePROGRAF Preview reduces waste from mistakes and improves efficient use of paper by allowing users to check the page structure, position, size, and orientation of their project on the roll paper before printing. Simply select the preview check box in the iPF driver to automatically start imagePROGRAF Preview. (Not available in all models. Older models will be supported with new version updates. Please visit http://usa. canon.com/download to download the latest drivers.) While printing, select the "Open Preview

When Print Job Starts" and click OK to start

imagePROGRAF Preview before starting to print.

This is a real-time preview screen that shows the image as it will be printed. The size, orientation, and page order of the printout on the roll are shown. You can reduce loss by previewing and checking before printing. A button for changing the layout and printer status information is displayed allowing you to decide whether or not to print.

3 Specific functions of Windows drivers 3.1

FineZoom

With Windows 95, the coordinate pixels that the OS could handle were limited. These limits on coordinate pixels disappeared with the introduction of Windows 2000 and Windows XP. However, many of the applications designed today still have the same limits on coordinate pixels as Windows 95. If these limits are exceeded, the document cannot be printed correctly because the application cannot draw the image correctly.

FineZoom, included with the imagePROGRAF printer driver, optimally controls the coordinate pixels in accordance with your application. This function reduces the burden on the customer for considering
the pixel limits of their application and correctly prints large sizes.

3.2

Monitor matching

People in printing and design offices normally adjust the colors of their prints by looking at a monitor. These people demand that the colors on the monitor match the colors on the printout. The process of adjusting colors improves incredibly if the colors on the monitor and the printout are the same.

If the colors do not match efficiency drops

If the colors do match efficiency rises

Getting the colors on the monitor to match the colors on the print out by considering the differences in the range of color reproduction and expression that cause the difference in the appearance of colors is called "monitor matching". The imagePROGRAF printer driver includes a monitor matching function that

uses Kyuanos, Canon's proprietary color matching technology. Only the imagePROGRAF can do color
matching taking into account the effect of the lighting in the work environment.

21

3.3

Kyuanos and ambient light correction

Kyuanos is the next generation color management system developed at Canon. Kyuanos automates high accuracy color matching and helps to keep the appearance of colors at various devices the same from input to printing. Some Kyuanos functions use the Windows Color System (WCS), which is a part of the Windows Vista color management system.

For monitor matching, ambient light is the lighting condition in the "viewing environment". The way we see monitors and printed materials varies depending on this "viewing environment". Ambient light changes mainly because of three factors, they are "color temperature", "type of light source", and "luminance (brightness of the light)". Color measuring equipment is necessary when measuring the ambient light. The i1 by X-rite is one example of this type of equipment. The iPF driver does not use measuring equipment. Instead, it is provided with a Light Source Check Tool that measures ambient light. This an iPF

proprietary tool that allows you to easily measure ambient light after printing out the Lighting Check Chart from the iPF driver by simply selecting the sample that looks the best under your lighting conditions.
We also provide a tool for more accurate measurement of ambient light using the i1 from X-rite.
Lighting Check Chart

By inputting these measured values in the iPF driver, Kyuanos can make corrections for ambient light. Using this technology, the iPF driver can take into consideration the lighting conditions at places where the printout will be appreciated, displayed, and exhibited allowing for a printout that has the best colors under various types of ambient light.

MEMO
The use of Kyuanos ambient light correction, the Light Source Check Tool, and the ambient light measurement tool are limited to certain types of media and print modes on each printer. To ensure proper operation, see the user manual for the printer, the monitor matching guide, and the Color Mangement System Guide for more information. Also, see the i1user manual from X-rite for more information on using the i1.

3.4

Support for Windows 64-bit edition

Windows XP and Windows Vista are provided with a 64-bit edition and a 32-bit edition. Existing 32-bit applications such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop run on the 64-bit edition, but their memory usage is limited to only 2 GB. To get the most out of the 64-bit edition, you must use 64-bit applications. [Typical applications that support 64-bit operation] AutoCAD 2009 from Autodesk LightWave 3D from NewTek Well-known CAD application A 3D modeling application

There are cases where these applications handle large amounts of data and some customers have already started installing 64-bit environments. In these cases, a 64-bit print driver is necessary. Existing 32-bit print drivers cannot be used with the 64-bit edition. The imagePROGRAF provides support for both environments with 32 and 64-bit printer drivers.

MEMO
The 64-bit driver does not currently come on the installation CD. Instead, they can be downloaded from the support and downloads sections of the Canon website for your region. We are working on including the 64-bit driver with all new products.

4 Specific functions of Macintosh drivers 4.1

OS versions and printer drivers
The imagePROGRAF printer driver for the Macintosh comes in two types, one for each OS version.

For OS 10.3 and OS 10.4 For OS 10.5 or above

Tioga driver CUPS driver

The Tioga driver is based on the old print architecture inherited from OS 9. The CUPS driver is based on the new print architecture in Mac OSX and is improved with each new version of Mac OS. Apple intends to promote the CUPS driver, and we plan to actively develop the imagePROGRAF series for the CUPS driver. The imagePROGRAF CUPS driver has the following features not found anywhere else.

* Built-in proprietary high-speed renderer * 16-bit image processing * Individual image processing for each object (sharpening characters, enhanced fine lines, etc.) * Printer registration application (iPF810/iPF820 or above)

MEMO
The CUPS driver does not currently come on the installation CD. Instead they can be downloaded from the support and downloads sections of the Canon website for your region. We are working on including the 64-bit driver with all new products.

24

4.2

Built-in proprietary high-speed renderer

The imagePROGRAF printer driver comes equipped with high-speed rendering developed by Canon. Drivers from the competition use the OS system renderer and this creates extremely long processing times when printing long horizontal data, for example. Canon's ultra high-speed renderer does color processing and drawing processing like image rotation (90, 180, landscape) all at once to fully utilize the high-speed printing capabilities of the imagePROGRAF printer. Using our proprietary renderer also adds image processing for each object and image processing functions, such as enhancing fine lines and sharpening of text (5-color models).

[Tioga driver]
Adding iPF-specific functions is difficult because it uses the system renderer.

[CUPS driver]

models)

16-bit image processing

Mac OS 10.4 and above can handle 16-bit image data processing during printing. The CUPS driver then does color processing and high-accuracy image processing internally on this 16-bit data. (8- and 12-color

The imagePROGRAF printer driver is designed to maintain a high bit accuracy when transferring data to the printer. This high-accuracy processing, from input to the actual printout, makes it possible to print in high-quality with the delicate gradations required with large format inkjet printers. Impress on customers that "The imagePROGRAF driver

is effective for printing images specified for the 16-bit/channel in Photoshop."

4.4

Printer registration

The following 2 steps were necessary when installing Macintosh drivers. 1. Install the driver 2. Register the printer from the system panel

A special "Printer registration" application has been included on printer drivers starting with the iPF810/820 printer that registers the printer after installation is complete.
It is perfect for those who are unfamiliar with installing a printer driver, packaging the entire installation and registration process into one flow.

26

5 StatusMonitor and PrintMonitor

StatusMonitor and PrintMonitor are utility programs that notify you with messages and icons about the status of the print job. This includes warnings about a lack of paper or ink and the operating status of the imagePROGRAF printer. An easy-to-read user interface screen supports effective work with your large format printer. (The basic functions of StatusMonitor and PrintMonitor are the same. The following explanations use StatusMonitor as an example.)
