Function of the HLR/AUC

The HLR manages mobile subscriber data. In a PLMN, multiple HLRs may be deployed to meet actual requirements. The HLR stores mobile subscribers IMSIs and MSISDNs. The HLR also stores the information such as the location information (VLR number), basic service data, service restriction data (roaming restriction), and supplementary service data. AuC The AuC generates and stores encryption and authentication data for mobile subscribers.

Advanced Hardware Platform

The GU HLR9820 adopts the OSTA 2.0 hardware platform that is compatible with the Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture (ATCA). The OSTA 2.0 platform has the following advantages: The equipment and monitoring system comply with the carrier-class application design. The service plane, control plane, and management plane are physically separated. Therefore, the lower-layer hardware planes are not adversely affected by other planes. If the hardware needs to be upgraded, the software can still be used without any modification. Therefore, the system reliability is greatly improved. The components used in the OSTA 2.0 platform comply with the component selection specifications for carrier-class equipment and the ETSI/NEBS standards. The system is enhanced with the function of monitoring the system operation, hardware components, and external interfaces. In addition, it adopts the fault diagnosis mechanism and provides pre-alert when a component is in a border line state between normal operation and fault. The OSTA 2.0 platform meets the sound-proof and heat dissipation requirements for telecommunications equipment. The OSTA 2.0 platform adopts fault detection and fault isolation technologies. Therefore, the detected faults are isolated and will not adversely affect the running of other parts of the system.

Functional Structure

Logically, HLR9820 consists of the front end (FE) and back end (BE). The FE processes protocols and services. The BE stores, queries, and manages subscriber data. In terms of functions, the UIM consists of five functional subsystems, the signaling processing subsystem, the subscriber data management subsystem, the data service subsystem, the data storage subsystem, and the O&M subsystem.

17

Signaling Processing Subsystem

The signaling processing subsystem provides the following functions: The signaling processing subsystem receives and processes signaling messages. It consists of the Broadband Signaling Gateway (BSG) and Call Control Unit (CCU). The BSG processes signaling messages at the MTP2 layer and MTP3 layer and forwards the processed messages to the CCU. The CCU completes protocol processing at the SCCP, TCAP, and MAP layers, as well as service processing. It obtains subscriber data from the data service subsystem and modifies the subscriber data. The signaling processing subsystem is deployed on GUFEU boards, which are physically implemented by UPBA0 boards.
Copyright 2010 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. All rights reserved. Page35

Subscriber Data Management Subsystem

The subscriber data management subsystem provides the following functions: Supports centralized service provisioning for different FEs. Provides open Human-Machine Language (MML) and Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) interfaces. Supports connection from Web clients. Implements authentication and authority verification on the users of the provisioning system and Web clients. Manages subscription data. The subscriber data management subsystem is deployed on USPGW boards, which are physically implemented by UPBA2/UPBA6 boards.
Copyright 2010 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. All rights reserved. Page36

18

Data Service Subsystem

The DRU provides the data routing function. The subscriber data is stored in multiple DSU clusters. Based on the subscriber identity, the DRU identifies the DSU cluster in which the required subscriber data is stored, and then selects a DSU node based on the load balancing strategy to provide data services. The DSU serves as the in-memory database of the USCDB. It performs the functions of adding, deleting, updating, and providing data upon request, processing data requests, and returning the processing result. The data service subsystem is deployed on USDRU/USDSU boards, which are physically implemented by UPBA2/UPBA6 boards.

Page37

Subscriber Storage Subsystem

The data storage subsystem consists of DMU boards and the disk array. The physical database is independent of service processing. It provides only permanent storage of global data, subscriber data, and route data. The physical database is deployed on the DMU board, which connects to the disk array through fabric cables. It uses the Oracle database management software. The DMU board is physically deployed in UPBA2/UPBA6 boards.

Page38

19

O&M Subsystem
The functions of the O&M subsystem are implemented by OMU boards. Typically, a pair of OMU boards is configured in slots 0 and 2 in the basic subrack. The two OMU boards work in active/standby mode. Active and standby OMU boards periodically send heartbeat messages to each other to notify their peer nodes of their current state. If the FE and BE are deployed in integrated mode, the FE and BE are managed by the same O&M subsystem. If the FE and BE are deployed in separate mode, the FE and BE are managed by different O&M subsystems. OMU boards are physically deployed on UPBA2/UPBA6 boards.
