Rationale Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. - Nelson Mandela

The objective of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives. The importance of receiving education in our lives cannot be doubted. Education opens up our minds and makes us broadminded. There is no better time than the present to understand this. Education forms the basis of any society. It is responsible for the economic, social, and political growth and development of society in general. Education imparts

knowledge whereby making discoveries and implementing them for the betterment of the society becomes possible. The thread of the growth of society depends upon the quality of education that is being imparted. The better the quality, the better people can learn and utilize it to make reforms that lead to research and development. The importance of taking education as a concept needs to be instilled in children from an early age. Education does not simply mean bookish knowledge, but holds a much deeper meaning. It means opening your minds to learn new things and pursue different options. Opting for higher education provides one with a clearer vision and makes one more receptive to change. It makes a person rational with an ability to think and question Education also provides opportunities to interact with people from different walks of life. It leads to better understanding and an exposure of how the world lives and thinks. It is our duty to inculcate the importance of education in children. They should be made aware that the list of degrees that tail an individual's name does not mean that one is educated. It holds a much wider perspective. Education means to go beyond the degrees and continue to achieve by acquiring knowledge. In the real sense, education means to evolve from being an individual to a human being, capable of not merely 'surviving' but living life. The importance of education goes beyond the concept of being literate. It goes much deeper, in denoting a way of life and thinking. Education today has become synonymous with being a well-informed, thinking person, and just as Nelson Mandela put it, education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. In the system of education in the Philippines, to the Filipino, knowledge is acquired through education. Although they generally agree that education can be obtained inside and outside school, they believe that the primary sources of knowledge are the schools. Thus, the

higher a person goes up the formal educational ladder, the more knowledge he or she acquires and expectedly, the more wealth he or she generates or produces. Being wealthy means having power, influence and social prestige. Thus, earning a college diploma means acquiring the key to economic and social opportunities. The supreme ambition of every Filipino family, therefore, is to send every child to college regardless of the sacrifices it might entail on the part of at least one of the children, preferably the oldest child, should get a college degree so that he or she can take care of a younger sibling's college education, who in turn can assume the obligation of supporting the next younger sibling's education. The study of Filipino perceptions of schooling revealed that Filipinos have a clear idea of the purpose of formal education. They view education as a process of human capital formation, which demonstrates how Filipinos value the importance of education. The Literacy Training Service is a program designed to train students to become teachers of literacy and numeracy skills to school children, out of school youth, and other segments of society in need of their service. It is created through Republic Act No. 9163 or the "National Service Training Program (NSTP) Act of 2001". As students of the university, it is our duty to expand our knowledge and services to public school and promote education. Although education may be a privilege for those who can afford it, helping those that cannot afford it can be beneficial. Regardless of background, income, or what type of family the children might come from, the significance of spreading education goes far beyond that. Education is the process of learning and knowing, which is not restricted to our school textbooks. It is a holistic process and continues through our life. Even the regular happenings and events around us educate us, in one or the other way. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the existence of human beings is fruitless without education. An educated person has the ability to change the world, as he/she is brimming with confidence and assured of making decisions for him/herself.

Narrative History of the Case Study a. Background Information Gerald Kyle N. Miro (a.k.a. Gem), is a 7-year-old boy who lives at Tabon, Angeles City.

He was born on November 6, 2005 and is the 2nd out of 4 children of Mr. Elson Miro and Mrs. Loisa Miro. Mr. Miro, who works as a deliveryman of pork and meats in the local market, supports the entire family. Mrs. Miro, on the other hand, is responsible for all the household chores and for taking care of their children. Gem is currently a grade two student at Pandan Elementary School, Angeles City. According him, he is very diligent in going to school. In fact, he never absents himself except whenever hes sick. He usually wakes up at 6:00 am, eats his breakfast and prepares himself to go to school. His father drops him off at around 6:45 am. His morning classes starts at 7:00 am and ends at 11:30 am. He goes back home to have his lunch and leaves at 12:15. He has an hour of lunch break. His afternoon classes starts at 12:30 and ends at 3. Upon arriving home, he does his homework, if he has any, before taking his nap or playing outside with friends. After having his dinner at 7:00 pm, he has the privilege to watch television for about an hour before going to sleep. When it comes to health habits, Gem is fond of eating vegetables. According to him, he eats all vegetables except eggplant. He takes daily baths and brushes his teeth twice a day. For

mild illness, his familys remedies for coughs and colds include taking lagundi decoction, kalamansi juice and increase water intake. For fever, doing sponge bath and taking analgesics and Paracetamol are some of their remedies. Lastly, according to Gem, their family is active with the community activities. They participate and are interested in joining with such activities.

b. Observation Notes The students observed that upon initial interaction with Gerald, he appeared a bit timid and soft-spoken. Although somewhat meek, he was quite friendly and interactive with the AUF students. In addition, he was also cooperative and willing to try with whatever exercises we gave him. Prior to doing the tutoring session, we asked him various questions about school, activities, and his hobbies & interests. As we established rapport and got to know him a little better, we started the teaching session with things he already knew how do to. We asked him to pull out his school notebooks, which he did without hesitation. We decided to focus on mathematics; as we looked through exercises he had already done previously, we gave him similar exercises. When he was given some addition and subtraction exercises, he did not oppose and was eager to do the problems. In this sense, our purpose was just to reinforce his learning and add on to what he already knows. After doing the math exercises, we moved on to reading. We read him a short childrens book that was written in English, and it was translated to him in Tagalog. He cannot read or comprehend English as well. However, when the story was relayed to him and was asked about the content of the story, his comprehension ability was exceptional. We also took frequent breaks with Gem, so as not to strain him. Sometimes, we observe that children have short attention spans and that their minds tend to wander. To counter this, we would take a break either by chatting with him and distracting him with diversional activities, or eating a small snack and walking around the classroom. Shortly after, we would regroup and find other exercises to do. Overall, it was apparent that Gem was an intelligent child, whose learning ability and knowledge was appropriate for his age and grade level. He was very easy to work with, much willing and quite friendly. After working with him at least several times, he appeared to be more fond of us and was more talkative.

Moral Evaluation Despite of poverty, we were very happy to see Gem persevere, work hard and eager to

study at school. He doesnt have troubles in the family. From the way he describes his relationship with his family, he has loving and responsible parents. Irrespective of where a child's talents lie, parents should try and encourage their child to do all his work himself. Such habits are fostered at a young age. Having the maid do all the work for the child is not necessarily a bad habit, but the child should take the initiative to get things done, either by him or through others. The difference here is that the push should come from the child, and not from the parents. It is better to let the child take a few falls in the beginning and learn by himself, without others trying to cushion his falls.

Recommendations We recommend this Case Study to teachers and educators, as education is the process

of teaching.

Education can be formal, informal or non-formal. It can be traditional and

indigenous, or modern and imported. However, no matter the form it takes, education is the influence of one person, or a group of persons, on others. Incidentally, it is erroneous to assume that education is always the influence of the teacher on the students. Reciprocally, every teacher also learns from his student, and the interaction can produce positive consequences. Education develops and cultivates character as well as the intellect. With teachers and educators well informed of the currents trends and the needs of the society, they may better understand the importance of their influence in society. With this understanding, they can impart their knowledge and promote a positive influence for children in need of an education. Strategies and methods used in the educative process are many varied. This is why psychologists, philosophers and educationists advocate proper an adequate training for those seeking to become teachers. Such professional training is critical at the primary and secondary levels of education where teachers have to cope with young children and adolescents at a very impressionable stage of the development of their intellect and personality. This Case Study is also recommended for government officials because they have the power to allocate sources and provide funding for the schools. In addition, this is also

recommended for school board officials because they make decisions regarding education that would potentially affect students. Education is much valued in society because it is a vehicle for

imparting knowledge and skills. But the acquisition of concepts and techniques should not be an end in itself. The knowledge and skills must be put into practical in the solution of human problems, in decision-making, in rational, judgment, in administration of peace and justice. The successful accomplishment of the central task of education depends on a delicate balance and adjustment of many variable factors. Education is dealing with human beings whose minds continuously react to personal needs, societal expectations, material circumstances, and ever changing political economic realities.

Reflection Education gives us knowledge of the world around us. It helps us build opinions and

have points of view on things in life. Education is important as it teaches us the right behavior and good manners thus making us civilized. It is instrumental in the development of our values and virtues. It gives us an insight into our lives and teaches us to learn from experience. Education is important for the economic growth of a nation. It fosters principles of equality and socialism. It forms a support system for individuals to excel in life. Education is important because it equips us with all that is needed to make our dreams come true. It opens doors to brilliant career opportunities. Education is essential as it paves the path leading to disillusionment. It wipes out all the wrong beliefs in our minds. It helps create a clear picture of everything around us and we no longer remain in confusion about the things we learn. Education brings up questions and also helps us devise ways to find satisfactory answers to them. Schools, colleges and other such educational institutes define the basic framework of education. Schooling gives us the fundamentals while we specialize in fields of our interest during degree courses. But education does not end here. It is a lifelong process. Self-learning begins at a point where institutional education ends. The process of self-learning continues. Given the opportunity to teach, I realize that teaching requires a special talent and sense of vocation. Teaching is a creative act, never more so than in primary and secondary schools. Good teachers, like good artists, have their own individual styles of performing. They also respect the individuality of their students in the realization that everybody learns through his or her own perceptions. - Roxenette Gil B. Pangilinan
