ILA Gains RTO Status

The International Language Academy Pty. Ltd. (ILA) is now legally certified as an Australian Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
After an intensive assessment process over a six-month period by the Queensland Governments Training and Employment Recognition Council, ILA has been awarded the status of a Registered Training Organisation under the Australian Skills Quality Authority and the Australian Quality Training Framework. National Provider Number: 32537 Registration enables ILA to: * deliver and/or assess nationally recognised training throughout Australia* issue AQF qualifications that are recognised by industry and all other RTOs in Australia-

Illiteracy Fight Expanded

In a world where more than one billion adults are illiterate 700,000,000 of whom are women - ILA has pursued its social objective to make a difference as an Education Provider of English. The primary goal has been to train volunteers who, in turn, play a teaching/tutoring/training role at the global illiteracy coalface. To this end, ILA has been conducting a range of English training programs in S. E. Asia and the Pacific Region. ILAs primary focus has been in Malaysia where unemployed, young adults from the provinces have been trained for the UMNO charitable foundations. Courses have also been run for a KL Myanmar refugee group, the Metropolitan Community Centre, and some Catholic, Lutheran and Evangelical church volunteers. Parental-based and tutor/trainer enhancement programs have also been conducted in Nauru, PNG and Australia.

* confidently accept the Certificates and Statements of Attainment issued by other providers because they have been subjected to the same quality assessment processes* use training products developed by industry to meet industry needs* have its registration and contact details listed on the National Training Information Service (NTIS) website* use the Nationally Recognised Training Logo* develop partnerships with other organisations to provide nationally recognised training and/or assessment services. RTO recognition by Australian Government authorities is accepted by numerous countries around the world thus giving ILA the right to award internationally recognised Certificates and Statements of Attainment for Australian accredited courses and programs such as Cert. IV in TESOL and English Communication, etc. ILA clients will benefit from gaining Australian and in turn globally-recognised qualifications and by knowing that their training was delivered by an education provider that meets national and international training standards. Career prospects also will be enhanced because the qualifications awarded are accredited in Australia and elsewhere as will the academic acceptance of those who have undertaken courses delivered by the International Language Academy. Sepic River PNG

ILA wishes to publicly acknowledge the fantastic work Carl Musch and the members of his Indigenous Ministry Links Australia (IMLA) have been performing in teaching English using the 4S methodology along the Sepic River in Papua New Guinea. The video sent to the ILA office in Brisbane showing crowds of excited villagers waving 4S-AEP publications brought tears to the eyes of those who saw the video for the first time.

Some Recent ILA Event Highlights

While all the courses and programs conducted by the International Language Academy are memorable events, the two recent Corporate English courses conducted for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission at the MAC Academy were special highlights. The 33 Regional MACC officers excelled throughout the eight-day course demonstrating a high level of personal commitment and initiative. Professionally organised by Balkis Binti Ahmad and her dedicated team from the Malaysian Education Regional office Pejabat Pelajaran Daerah Petaling 98 teachers from almost 50 schools attended an intensive one-day, 4S Teacher Enhancement Program (TEP) at Seafield. The E-mail feedback from many of the course participants has clearly indicated a willingness on the part of Malaysian teachers to explore alternative, effective teaching methods especially the 4S Accelerated English Program. Lecturing to Engineering students at the University of Malaya was an occasion to be remembered as participants came to realise that learning English the 4S way can be fun. In The Philippines, the International Language Academy has re-established its presence by partnering with the up-and-coming Manila training organisation, GISA. The popular, 4S Accelerated English Enhancement Program (ALLEP) and the Vocational English Enhancement Program. (VEEP) were conducted in February. Negotiations have also been held recently with the Korean college, IWC, in Subic. The Operations Director of Riverbank Academy Kajang, Selangor, Mr. Mahendran, and ILA are planning a five-day Blended, Facilitated-On-line Certificate IV TESOL course during the August-September period. ILAs Star Column Passes Two-Year Milestone

The fortnightly Exploring English column in Malaysias most well-read English language newspaper, The Star written by the ILA Director, Keith Wright - has well passed the two-year milestone and is still maintaining its popularity with readers. Exploring English columns focus generally on Literacy, Language and Grammar problems and practical solutions as well as ways individuals can improve their personal communicative skills of Speaking, Writing, Interpreting, Reading, Listening and Viewing. Each edition of Exploring English offers free, English-related, PDF files from the 4S-AEP Help Desk. The huge demand for these files clearly demonstrates the desire of many Malaysians to enhance their personal competence and confidence in English. (See P.6) One column earlier this year, attracted 398 E-mails mainly from teachers and people at the coalface of commerce and industry where proficiency in the language has become an increasing necessity in Malaysia. 4S Associate Wins Second Grant

Sempurna Community Services founder and philanthropist-educator, Peter Soo, from Jahor Baru, is to receive another significant annual grant from the Nanyang Press Foundation towards the running of his free English language centre. This year the grant is being increased to RM76,000.
Peter Soo with ILA CEO, Keith Wright

Supported by a generous business entrepreneur and developer, Sempurna Community Services is being physically expanded with the addition of new library and counselling areas. The majority of Peters students are from the urban poor (a monthly household income of less than RM1,500 - approx USD500.) In a report to ILA, Peter Soo said, I provide three free services: English tuition for 12-year-old students, counselling services and a library. The main activity is the tuition centre. In starting the centre, my aim was to raise the standard of English among the primary school children in my community. I had seven classes of 40, i.e. 280 students last year. This year, the class size was reduced so I only had about 210 students. Last year, I taught a VIP Class for specially selected poor students who were from single-parent families and / or who were having disciplinary problems in school. In the field of counselling, they are termed atrisk students. In addition to counselling students, I am also personally helping three single-fathers. I am also acting as a "godfather" (not the mafia type!) to five students, as they do not have a father figure. Peter Soo also writes for The Star newspaper and is known widely as a Social Activist and a committed Christian. After attending a number of 4S-AEP seminar workshops in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, he decided to use the 4S accelerated teaching and learning methodology in his centre.
