Cartographic Representation O Overview i

What is it? Why use it? Things Thi t to consider id Getting started Working with it

What is Cartographic R Representation? i ?

Method to symbolize features

User User-defined rules Doesnt change g the actual spatial p geometry g y of the feature Feature symbols are stored within the geodatabase Stored as a property of a feature class

Doesnt replace layer files, maps documents, , or style y files

Why Use Cartographic R Representation? i ?

Richer, more complex map Richer symbology or visualization Better looking maps Store different types of symbols for diff different t purposes Single interface to manage symbology instead of buried in the layer properties window

Why Use Cartographic R Representation? i ?

Stored in geodatabase
Better data management Dynamic symbols based on feature attributes

Example of Enhanced Symbology

Marker Editor

Symbol editing
Removes need for an external graphics program Edit feature independently of geometry

License Issues

Can see cartographic representation in all license levels, including ArcReader Only licenses that CANT view are ArcPad and ArcIMS highhigh -performance server N dA Need ArcGIS GIS D Desktop kt with ith at t least l t ArcEditor to create

Technical Considerations

Drawing performance is as good as symbology Works with any type of geodatabase

Personal geodatabase File geodatabase Personal SDE g p SDE Workgroup Enterprise SDE

Doesnt work with Shapefiles p ( (.shp) p)

Getting Started Started

Most efficient if you create some basic symbology for a layer in ArcMap This example shows a road layer symbolized by the type of surface

Example of Road S f Surface Symbology S b l

Creating Representation in ArcMap

RightRight -click on layer that already has the symbology set - Select Convert Symbology to Representation Create a new name for representation
Ex: Parks_Rep Can give a more relevant or descriptive name RuleID O Override id

Creates two new fields in the feature class

Custom names help identify representation

Creating Representation

Properties of layer Symbology tab Representations properties All symbols for a feature class are together

Changes to the standard symbology is stored in the Override field as a binary binary large object object - Blob

Editing Representation in A C l ArcCatalog

You can edit symbology in ArcCatalog if data not open in ArcMap

Representation Management

Mostly like assign and manage through the Layer Properties |Symbology tab in ArcMap Cant have layer open in another ArcMap or ArcCatalog session

Rule Management

Load Rule
Provides pre pre-set symbology options Adds new Representation Rule

Rule Management

After clicking Load Rule Rule you see pre pre-set options

Rule Management

Rule Management

DoubleDouble -click on rule name to change

Rule Management

Creating a new feature, select representation rule to apply

Add New Rule

Similar to Load Rule except it uses the default symbology (black)

Edit Symbology

Add point, line, or polygon symbology Change C a ge the t e layer aye order of the symbology Remove a layer

Add Geometric Effect

Add Geometric Effect

Add effect to all layers in a representation rule Or apply to single symbol May have to create a new symbol l layer ayer
Creating a buffer around a point would require i adding ddi a fill symbol b l and d applying the buffer geometric effect

Marker Placement

Control marker placement

Ex: random, clipped

Requires a marker symbol

Marker Editor

Full marker editing environment Create new or custom markers I Import t markers k from f a font f t DoubleDouble -click on marker symbol
Select Properties

Add New Marker Symbol

Editing Representation Features

Representation Toolbar Editing the geodatabase, so regular editing ed t g rules u es apply app y NOT editing the underlying geometry Desktop Help explains each tool

Representation Properties Window

Must ust be in ed edit t mode ode Feature selected Drawing g tab shows current symbol layers

Representation Properties Window

Tools tab show different properties for various representation tools selected

Override Field

If you make significant editing changes to your representation rules, consider make a new or additional rules Any feature representation edits are stored in the Override Field Can C change h b both th th the look l k and d the th geometric placement of the feature
