Israel were not urging war for material
gain, but for self-protection, and by ap-

Saul's Temptation. Doubtless it was
the temptation of the people as well. The
covetous devil rose up and wanted fiJthy
lucre now within such easy grasp. Per-
haps Saul not only desired the booty, but
he feared to resist the demand of his
army for it as well. His previous break
made him weak in the face of this. Go

CAN'T KILL CHURCHES THAT WAY.
A devout colored preacher, whose
.heart was aglow with missionary
zeal, gave notice to his congregation
that in the evening an offering would
be taken for missions, and asked for
liberal . gifts. A selfish, well-to-do
man in the congregation said to him
before the service:
''Y er gwine to kill this church if
yer goes on saying, 'Give! Give!' No
church cah stan' it. Yer gwine to .
kill it.,
After the sermon the colored min-
ister said to the people, ''Bro. Jories
told 'me I was a gwine ter kill dis
here church if lkep' a askin' yer to

. doesn't die dat way:- Ef anybody
knows of a church dat died cause it

much obliged ef my brother will tell
me whar dat church is, for l'se gwine
to visit it, and I'll climb on de walls
of dat church, under de light of de
moon, and cry, 'Blessed am de dead
dat die in de Lord.' "-Selected.
