"But We See Jesus."
IN this sentence we have victory for every redeemed
child of Adam. The final victory is not yet ours, but .it
is sure-just as sure as Christ has conquered. . In the
mind of God He has already "put all things in subjection

WISDOM.
E. D. HINCHMAN.
Wisdom is applied knowledge.
Sometimes it is received through pre-
cept and example, and sometimes it
has. to be po.unded into us by the hard
knocks 9f personal experience, and
then again some are so impermeable
it seems they never will become wise
unto salvation, but must batter their
way down to hell, walking in the lusts
of the flesh,. "fulfilling the desires i:>f
the flesh and of the mind," regardless .
of the consequences. ''The fear of
' the Lord is the beginning of knowl-
' edge: but fools despise wisdom and
instruction. ''
''So teach us to number our days
that we may apply our hearts unto
wisdom.'' Wisdom is begotten of
knowledge, but knowledge does not
always beget wisdom. There are
many who know that "the wages of
sin is death,'' that it is destructive of
soul, mind and body, who neverthe-
less cling to it as a cherished idol and
roll it as a sweet morsel under their
tongue. But to the one who has his
own moral and spiritual wellbeing at
heart, who desires to be a man indeed,
and that a clean .man, before the bar
of his own conscience as well as before
the world, some difficulties become
manifest early in life, and these diffi-
culties enlarge upon his horizon as his
eyes are opened to the eternal realities
of things. The Holy Spirit is faithful,
and as the rE!f>rover of sin He shows
us how much . we are out of harmony
with the law of God and the law of
our wellbeing. '
Here, to the conscientious man, the
.. hattie of life. begins. He does not
reCQgnjze defeat as but feels the
of calling all the power of his
will into action in order to victory. It

CONVICTION.
G. W. BUGH .
"When He rthe Comforter] is come, He
will reprove tlie world of sin, and of right-
eousness, and of judgment." John 16:8.
The Revisers have changed the word
"reprove" and tran.slate the Greek
elegxei," "convict." This is its more
direct meaning. Of course, indirectly .
it means reprove, \!onvince, or admon-
ish. The scriptural thought of Christ
is, that when the Comforter is come,
He will refute the excuses o( the
world. First, "of sin," of sins:
for Christ expected to atone for all
those which did not especially refer
to the conditions of mercy: for said

Christ's . offering ''does not cover con-
tinued infidelity or Unbelief. Unbe-
lief is upon repentance, as
all other sins; but this sin is placed
for all general sins, where the gospel
is preached and faith in Christ de-
manded, There is no hope: for an
And the sin, above
''He that believeth not is condemned
already." John 3:18.
The word conviction is from the
Latin con and vinco, and as understood
in our courts of justice, it signifies
the proof of truth or evidence, by
which a culprit is found guilty of
crime, and by which he is condemned.
First, he is arrested, then he is brought
beforecourt to . receive an attentive
hearing. Second, he is imprisoned by
the law and accordingly receives sen-
tence .. an4 The Holy Spirit
is here very jurisprudent. The law
for morals and religious .faith is made
conditional for grace, whereas civil
law knows no mercy. But if a man
will spurn all conditions of grace,
such a sinner is adjudged with con-
demnation.
Conviction is then, first, an arrest
o{. the mind given to sinful indulgen-
ces. Second, it is a. , revelation of
truth, or the law of the gospeL This

ONLY THE PURR CAN ENJOY GOD.
Man was not made to he a hermit.
He is a society creature. He loves
companionship. He can be happy if
()fall else, if only the object
of his love be spared. Love he must
have, or become wretched, a maniac,
a suicide. This instinct was implanted
in him at creation. God made him so.
It was for a purpose. The Heavenly
Father longed for some inhabitant of
earth to love Him. "God is lO'Ve,"
and love must be loved. So He maal
man in His own likeness-perfectly
pure and infinitely loving. Who can

The following from

the Northwest District; at : their
recent Assembly session:
SAN FRANCISCO DISTRICT ASSEMBLY
AND CAMP-MEETING.
Word comes--from Dr; Bresee, from -
Oakland that the San Francisco Dis-
trict Assembly has closed after a very
profitable and enthusiastic session.
The regular business was transacted
and all adjustments for the district
made for the coming year.
The Camp-meeting . has' . been a
remarkably good onei and the blessing
of the Lord on the services has been
very manifest. We hope to. give a
fQll report of both the Assembly and
the Ca_mp:meeting in . our next_ issue.
NAZARENES, ATTEN'I:ION!
Fellow laborers! We have an
. opportunity for you. You know full
well that the church papers are an
important factor in the growth and
organization of our Church. The
work could not be accomplished with-
out them. . For years we have pub-
.lished the NAZARENE at
great 'financial loss. we' have had
a conviction that the Church must
have the paper and have cheerfully
provided the means for its publica-
tion.
We are glad we can truthfully say
we are not tired of the work. How-
ever the.re is a phase of the question
which we would ' like to have yo'u
look at. It is absolutely . necessary
that a amount of other bus-
iness be carried on that we may earn
the money to .meet _the .. .ai:mual deft:

world in this ' generation if we would J
meet the problem in God's own Way,

WHAT GOD HATH WROUGHT
.IN THE
Nazarene Hope School . and Mission, Calcutta.
It is now a year since l wrote a report of
the work here. I was away fr_om India for
just over eight months, and In that time I
went round the, world and b a d a grand time
in every way. Since my return I have often
wanted to write to you all, but various lllnd
ranees have come In the way. Now, how-
ever, I am ready to begin, but there is so
much t.o tell about eyery branch of the work
that I hardly know where to_start.- -
The Hindu day school is being held In the
same house, but we have changed landlords,
and are not quite so welcome with the new
one, I fear. He has) raised our rent, but l
hope we shall not have to move again. We
had our prize distribution just after my re-
turn, and about 130 dear- little Hindu girls
got their dolls and other presents from thelt
kind friends In the far-away lands .
As soon as I could I visited many of our
old girls, little child-wives, all having been
married before the age of and' how
many sad results of child-marriage are s een
as house after house Is visited. One dear
child we saw gets fits since her marriage,
and lies unconscious for hours; but her hus-
band in&ists on taking her to his home, twen-
ty-four hours journey. Into the country, far
away from any doctors. He blames the
parents for deceiving him as to her bealtn;
although she never had a fit until after she
left them. Another little girl is married,
but Is so delicate th.at it is painful to see
her thin condition. Her husband accuses
.the parents of half-starving her before he
marriage, to keep her looking small
1
and
short, in order to .. 4ecelye their caste-people
about her age and prevent disgrace, because
they had not saved epough money to get
her marr-Ied in time. I hear from-others that
they r eally did this; and now she has got
so used' to not eating much that she cannot
eat. Think of these poor little ones, lll or
well, they must all be married by about the
age of ten or before. How glad we are that
the J..ord bas sent us amongst them to give
them three" or four happy years of school
life oefore their marriage,.. so that they can
learn to. read the Book of Boolcs, and learn of
the Saviour who alone. can help and comfort
. them In . their dark, heathen homes, where
they are the victims of these cruel heathen
customs. How sweet it is to see them re-
joiclng in their saviour under such Circum-
stances and in-such surroundings! -. _
.Chint a ' and' the other school teachers are
all well, and want me to be sure to remind
you of the dolls. Now we have two schools
to supply, we need more than we used to do.
.The Bible-women are a very energetlo
band. During these hottest months they do
t heir visiting from 6 a. m. till 11 u:. m. , for
it is exceptionally hcit this year. Seve ral
of the.!Jl villages lately and
ha\'e preached .to many who. ne.ver heard of
the Gospel before. They preach it and sing
It in the open air, In the homes of the people.,
who will !ldmit them, in the hospitals, le pe r
asylums, and everywhere they get an oppor-
tunity.
The preachers. are very busy, too, wltb
their open-air preaching twice a day, beside s
preaching 'in the vilhi.gei!, visiting 'the men'!!
wards of the hos pitals, and holding services
In their pall. In the evenings, too, they
often hold meetings In the homes of native
Christians. They try to get th.em to invite
their friends, and It is so nice to h ear the ir
'Gospel songs ringing out In the night air In
the hearing of the Hindus and Mahomme-
dans around. -
The hall servlces are much more encour
aging now. Often the r09m Is quite full of
Hindus, who are getting over their prejudice
graduany. we have a free reading room,
open all day, which gives constant oppor-
tunity of. a chat with those who. come In to
read. A young Brahmin conve rt helps in
the r eading room and is..a fine young Chris
tian.
Both the _preachers and the Bible-women
preach at the' idol' and held
In Calcutta and neighboring plac.es from
time to time; and they wish me to remind
their American .-fr iends of the "Bible and
Tract Dis tribution Fund" that they heard
was started. . They say that there are many
hands here w'imtlng to distribute as many
as they can get. In one bathing festival
-they- gave away 12,000 tracts and 600 Gospe.l
portions in Hindi, Ben galee, - Urdu . and ,
Arable. At least one_ hundred Hindu priests
and-ascetics, with their bodies smeared-with'
ashes, and ha.ir accepted the Gospel
portions, promising to .read them. One
Brahmin . put his bands on the preacher's
and blessed him for the gift. The
These services are always very' solemn to
me, as well as joyful, for this step means
so much in a heathen land. It means being
"out-easted," and nobdy who has not lived
here can guess what that really means. It
means being turned out of the home into the
.street-being bated and despised by father
and mother, wife or husband, sisters ancl
brothers, and even IJy one's own dlUdren,
who never wish to see the convert's face
a gain. It means lo13s of all: !!'lends, work,
position, and everything else that belongs
to them, In the world. Yes! solemn, but at
the same time joyful, that they are prepared
to count all things but loss for the excellency
of the knowledge of Christ Jesus their Lord, .
In whom they have all things, and abound.
Since these men have been baptized, there
ha,; been_ more marked _opposition in_ the
street preaching from Mahommedans, but
that we. must expect.
One of preachers, Probodh, was .mar-
ried just lately; and it was interesting to
see these two converts at the wedding. They
had neve r seen a Chris tian marriage before,
and were much struck by it. They told
Probodh they would like to have given him
a wedding present, but under the circum-
stances they could not.
We have another pr eacher since I l&t
wrote. His name is John Faithful, and lfu
is. a very fine man: In every way. ; He Is a
Bengal,ee, but be has had a good deal of
English education and can talk English flu-
ently. He is especially. qualified for work
amongst Hindus In the hall, besides all his
other work. Young men crowd round him,
for they soon know bow be longs to be a
help to.them.
These preachers are wanting two things
for their work. First,; a good magfc lantern',
. with good slides, especially slides lllustrat
i_ng the Gospet story; and, secondly, a nice
banner, with lnterehangeable Bengali and
English texts, In very large type, to carry
with them to tbe preaching stations. They
- can- make -the :latter themselves, . if they
have the money for printing the ' texts, ,I .
think. I am. sure ouP friends will be pleased
to . encourage them with these gifts.

. It was done, and when "the. prayer
was over, the man who had. sought
the interview said:
"Now proceed with what you have
to complain of in me." But the other
replied: ".1\fter praying over it, it
looks so little that it is not worth
talking about. The truth is, I . feel
now that in going around talking
against you I have been serving the
devil myself, and have need that you
pray for me and forgive me the
wrong I have done you."
The quarrel was settled from that

CAN'T KILL CHURCHES THAT WAY.
A devout colored preacher, whose
.heart was aglow with missionary
zeal, gave notice to his congregation
that in the evening an offering would
be taken for missions, and asked for
liberal . gifts. A selfish, well-to-do
man in the congregation said to him
before the service:
''Y er gwine to kill this church if
yer goes on saying, 'Give! Give!' No
church cah stan' it. Yer gwine to .
kill it.,
After the sermon the colored min-
ister said to the people, ''Bro. Jories
told 'me I was a gwine ter kill dis
here church if lkep' a askin' yer to
. give; but, my brethren, churches
. doesn't die dat way:- Ef anybody
knows of a church dat died cause it
been givin' to the Lord, I'll b.e very
much obliged ef my brother will tell
me whar dat church is, for l'se gwine
to visit it, and I'll climb on de walls
of dat church, under de light of de
moon, and cry, 'Blessed am de dead
dat die in de Lord.' "-Selected.
