Teachers Activity
A. Preperation 1. Opening Prayer 2. Greetings 3. Daily routine 3.1 Classroom Management 3.2 Checking of Attendance 4. Review We discussed yesterday, one of the measures of central tendency which is mean. Given the following data set: 99, 103, 140, 153, 109, 92,125, 110, 140, 98. Find the Mean. What is the first step in solving for the mean?

Students Activity

Yes student A! Get the sum of the values of all the terms in the data set. Very good! So, what is the sum of our data set? 1169 Well done! And, what is the next step after finding the sum of our data? Yes, student B! We divide the sum of all the terms by the number of terms. Very good! But how many are the terms in our data set? Yes, student C! 10 Good! Now what is the quotient of 1169 and 10? 116.9 Good! So the average of the data sets is 116.9 What if the datum contains extreme values? One of the limitations of the mean is, it is greatly affected by the extreme values, and then the best way to measure the central tendency is finding the median. B. Motivation Lets sing a song name m&m song. Do you know the song Mary had a Little Lamb? The song has the tune of the nursery rhyming song Mary had a little lamb. The song goes like these Mean is just the average Average, average, average Mean is just the average You add then you divide. Median is in the middle in the middle, in the middle, in the middle Median is in the middle Its so easy to find. Now sing it in sync. Yes maam

Mean is just the average Average, average, average Mean is just the average You add then you divide. Median is in the middle in the middle, in the middle, in the middle Median is in the middle Its so easy to find. C. Presentation Have you ever heard this term before? Maybe showing some pictures of median will give you some insights. What do you see in the first picture? Map of the world Very good! The world is divided by an imaginary line called the equator; it divides the world into two. The northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere. Now what do you seen in the next clip? Good observation! This is an example of a rebus puzzle, where youre going to decode the message from a picture. Now decode this picture. What does this picture says? Reading between the lines Lets look at the third clip, what do you see? Correct! Have you seen two lanes separated like these? Yes maam! What are the things we usually see in the middle that separates the road? Grass, trees and fences Very good, now lets move to the last picture. Look at the image. These are group of stars called a constellation. These is the famous Orion constellation. Do you see this three stars, this is the Orions belt named as Mintaka, Alnilam and Alnitak.

Cars and roads

What is the name of the middle star in the Orions belt? Alnilam Very good! Now recall the pictures that have been flashed to you. What is something they have in common? They all have middle things that divide the thing into two. Good observation! Now examine the picture. What do you see? Yes, student A! Tree Another, A man standing one more A man riding bicycle last one, Lamp post Good job! What is something that separates the road? Lamp post/ tree Very good! So our median is the? Lamp post Good! Now based on the previous pictures that show the median of some things. Who can now define the median? Yes, student D! Median is the middle value of values Very well said student D! Now lets try to find the median of the tallest building of 2012. The first step in finding the median is to make sure the data are arranged in ascending order. Are the building arranged in ascending order?

Who want to arrange the height the building in ascending order? Yes, student E!

421m, 442m, 452m, 492m, 509m, 828m, 829.8m Now, find the middle value of the data. Yes, student F! 492 Good! Lets interpret the results. How many building that has lesser height than the median 492? 3 How many building that has greater height than the median 492? 3 There are three buildings that is smaller than the median which is 492 and three building taller than the median. How will you find the median if your data contains even number? Youre just going to get the sum of the two middle values and divide it by two.

What are the two middle values? 492 and 452 And the sum of 492 and 452 is? 944 949 is divided by two? 472 So 472 is our median, please interpret the result. There are 4 buildings lower than the median and 4 building above the median 472. D. Generalization To sum it up, how to get the median if the values contains odd number? Get the middle value of the datum. Very good! What if you have an even number, how will you get the median? Get the sum of the two middle values and divide it by two.

E. Application Find the median of the six cars passing along the highway.

Who wants to find the median of the cars, show your solution on the board? Yes, student G!

Now interpret the results. There are cars that have a speed of below the median which is 67.5 and cars above the median. Now lets try the next example. Who wants to solve it on the board by arranging the datum? Erinia 300 Mark 315 Gilbert 325 Ofelia 425 Peter 441 Sarah 495 Efraime 510 Good! Now, what is the median? Median = 425 Interpretation? There are three employees got below the median and 2 employees above the median.

IV.

Evaluation 1. Find the median of the eight cards.

2. The number of people in an amusement park during 15 days were: 196, 320, 280, 410, 250, 680, 820, 750, 270, 382, 294, 790, 150, 180 and 274. Find the median of the number of guest.

V.

Assignment The following are the weights of 30 students. 87 116 102 98 87 125 114 82 97 110 114 95 88 100 102 105 107 94 98 88 121 115 92 91 124 117 104 102 112 108 1. Find the median. 2.
