June 2013

Dear Parents/Caregivers, Students and Friends of Reynella East College,

So much has happened since last term! I hope that you have been following the posts that we have been putting on our Facebook page. A special thanks to Tania Guest who has set up the Facebook page as a way of getting the news of the school out to you as quickly as we can. I should also mention Richard King who has been a regular contributor letting us know how the schools Saturday morning soccer teams have been going. I am delighted that Richard has been able to organise a parent run weekend soccer program to add to the other parent run sportsprograms. The advent of Facebook to complement our other means of communicating to the school community has brought our policies regarding student photos into focus. The Governing Council has looked at the issue and decided on a number of measures to safeguard the privacy of families. Shortly, all parents will be asked whether they give consent to their childrens photos to be used in school publications whether they be on the newsletter, our webpage or our Facebook page. In addition only photos of individual or small groups of students will be used by the school in any online environment and only when specific permission is given. We will avoid using photos of large groups of students when it is not possible to ascertain whether permission has been given for every person in the photo. The Governing Council also discussed whether parents should be able to take photos of school events that may or may not end up in an online environment. If you would like to comment on any of these issues please email me on Rob.Mutton754@schools.sa.edu.au. By the way we will shortly have our new website online we are just waiting for some final technical hurdles to be overcome. Our builders are overcoming some of the hurdles they face in working through some very wet weather and they have continued to make some great progress. Very shortly, three classes from the Aqua and Purple buildings will move into the newly renovated Braes unit. The new Pre-school has also been finished and is just awaiting inspection from the National Accreditation Authority before the Pre-school can move. After that the final demolition of the old transportable buildings in the Primary section of the school will take place, and four new classrooms will be constructed to take their place. At this stage it appears that the whole project will finish near the end of September this year. Thank you to all of the parents who came along to the secondary parent report night recently. We are always keen to hear of ways to improve these nights, so if you have any thoughts about how this can be improved, please do not hesitate to contact me. Rob Mutton Principal

Cyber Safety an issue at every school including Rec

Police at South Coast Local Service Area have seen an increase in reports from schools and families about the distribution and possession of inappropriate images.
These images, generally found on students mobile phones or facebook pages, are of a sexual nature. This practice is often referred to as sexting. In some cases, the images have been taken by a student and posted directly on their own facebook profile. In other examples, they are sent to a person involved with in a relationship and often sent on to others. The ramification for the students depicted in the images as well as the students in possession of the images is of great concern to police. All parents and carers are urged to have a conversation with their children in relation to the legal and social ramifications this behaviour poses; Child Exploitation Material often referred to as Child Pornography - includes images that depicts a child, under the age of 17, clothed in only underwear, nude or partially nude. It is an offence for a person to produce or disseminate Child Exploitation Material. The social ramifications for students involved in these matters can cause embarrassment both now and into the future. This can also cause further damage to reputation when applying for employment. Mobile phones, computers and other devices used to commit these offences may be subject to seizure by Police and subsequent destruction on court order. For further information about internet safety, please look at the website for the Australian Communications and Media Authority, Cybersmart Program. www.cybersmart.gov.au Rob Mutton

Open Day
Open Day Success
We welcomed over 150 families to our College Open Day on Sunday 5th May. Sincere thanks go to the staff and students involved who gave up their free time to help out. Feedback from the community has been very positive.
As a promotional lead-up to Open Day, most of our Yr 8-10 Student Leaders, and other participants; including the Choir, presented a show to our local feeder primary schools. Students from these schools were bussed to REC to enjoy the show in our Drama theatre. All students involved showed considerable commitment and professionalism in bringing this performance together. We thank them all for their efforts as positive role models to Reynella East College. All students involved in the Open Day and the Promotional show were rewarded with a thank you pizza lunch and were awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the school. Tania Guest

(Author of Everyone Pretend To Be Normal)

Our own Rochelle Miller is an SSO who supports children in class with learning difficulties. She has been nominated for a 2013 Autism SA Recognition Award for her newly published book Everyone Pretend To Be Normal. The book is an autobiographical account of her familys journey through the puzzling maze of autism.
The Autism SA Hilary Johnson Award recognises individuals and organisations who make a significant contribution to the organisation as well as for people and families living with Autism Spectrum Disorder in SA. Rochelle says I do love being able to help other families in our community and has given a presentation to all Year 7 classes this week which they seemed to really enjoy. This was to recognise Volunteers in the Onkaparinga Council area during National Volunteers Week. We would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank our tireless group of volunteers whom without their help we couldnt possibly manage to prepare so much food and serve so many students. They always brighten our day with their cheery attitude and are willing to roll up their sleeves and do whatever needs to be done to make the Canteen run smoothly. We also enjoy lots of laughs along the way! We acknowledged their contribution with a delicious afternoon treats each day of Volunteers Week which were home made by Canteen staff. Each Volunteer also received a lapel pin which identifies and thanks them for volunteering. Thanks goes to; Beth, Ros, Belinda, Jackie, Nola, Wayne, Jane, Nicole, Lyn, Leanne, Kathy, Kaye, Ashley and Taylor. Brazillian exchange students share their experiences
About My Time in Australia (Bianca Melo)
Being in Australia has been the best experience of my life. Since I arrived a lot of things have happened to me, many people have come into my life especially my host family. Ive become a mature and responsible girl. Being far from your family and your home makes you more independent and mature. When youre on exchange youre in contact with all sorts of cultures, and you learn from it and also learn how to respect those cultures and their differences. Being on exchange changes your point of view about the world and about people. Its about becoming more responsible and independent. Being on exchange changes your life and Im loving it.

My Exchange to Australia (Leonia Andrade Leite)

Living in Australia has been the best experience of my life. I never learned so much as I have learned here. My English is better and I learned to give value to people around me. For sure I am not the same as I used to be four months ago. I have learnt to respect different cultures, living different and being different. This exchange has changed my life and it has been awesome.

My Trip to Australia (Adrielly Paz Feliz Paiva)

My trip to Australia is one of the most exciting experiences of my life. This experience is different to what I previously thought. There was no need for a long time to adapt, although the first few days were not the easiest, most people have an incredible power to adapt, and above all I was lucky to have nice people on my side, to help and understand me. My new family is very cool. Two brothers to play, a mother and father who help me always be punctual and responsible and of course patient, my new friends are too. I miss all the important people to me in Brazil, but that does not matter much now because Im going back soon and imagine that when I return I will miss my family and friends from Australia. It is impossible to be in two places at once, I can come back and visit, but I need to wait a longtime.

SCHOLarship NEWS
Lillian Rilett Japanese Scholarship
I would like to take this opportunity to share some important insights that I have gained from my recent exchange trip to Mishima, Japan.
To apply for the scholarship, I had to write an application stating the reasons why I should bechosen. Once I had been chosen, I prepared for the exchange and went to Japan in the end term 1 school holidays. In Japan I attended Mishima Senior High School, and stayed with a host family for the majority of the time. Mishima Senior High School was amazing! It is a prestigious school and the high school had great facilities. Classes consisted mostly of listening and writing, and after school classes were finished, students would clean the classrooms themselves. The students and teachers were all very kind and made me feel included. I found school was physically draining, as it took much longer to commute and most students also had after school activities. However, once I had gotten used to riding the train every day, it was much easier and I used the time for napping. While in Japan I went on three excursions. They were Tokyo Disneyland, Kamakura, and an overnight stay in Hakone. At Tokyo Disney Land the rides took up to an hour to wait, but during that time I bonded with other South Australian students that had come with me and the Japanese students who I have become great friends with. My host family were wonderful, and I did a lot of fun and interesting activities with them, such as making dango and pizza, going to various 100 yen (approx one dollar) shops, and a little bit of sightseeing. Although my host father was very good at speaking English and I was able to understand my host sister, my host mother knew very little. It really tested my understanding of Japanese and with persistence and patience we both began to understand each other. The biggest challenge I faced was going to a communal bath with my host mother. There was a specific place to wash and then several large baths for everyone to relax in. It was really lovely, and they also had outside baths, which was definitely a new experience for me. In summary, my trip to Japan was fantastic! I was able to immerse myself in the culture, and it was extremely beneficial to my current Japanese studies, as well as the future benefits it holds. Thank you sincerely to all the teachers who helped this exchange succeed and I highly recommend this scholarship to students studying Japanese in year 9 as it is an experience youll always remember.
