The History of Fathers Day

The campaign to celebrate the nations fathers did not meet with the same enthusiasm as Mothers Day, perhaps because, as one florist explained, Fathers havent the same sentimental appeal that mothers have. In Fairmont, West Virginia, Grace Golden Clayton suggested to her pastor that they hold services to celebrate fathers after a deadly mine explosion killed 361 men at the Fairmont Coal Company mines. On July 5, 1908, the nations first event was held explicitly in honor of fathers. This special Sunday was a one-time commemoration, and not an annual holiday. The next year, a Spokane, Washington woman named, Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower, tried to establish an official equivalent to Mothers Day for male parents. Sonoras dad, William Smart, a veteran of the Civil War, was left a widower when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. She felt as though mothers were getting all the acclaim, while fathers were equally deserving of a day of praise. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and she was successful. Washington State celebrated the nations first statewide Fathers Day on July 19, 1910. Slowly, the holiday spread, with William Jennings Bryant being one of its staunchest proponents. In 1916, President Wilson honored the day by using telegraph signals to unfurl a flag in Spokane, when he pressed a button in Washington, D.C. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge urged state governments to observe Fathers Day. However, many men continued to disdain the day. As one historian writes, they scoffed at the holidays sentimental attempts to domesticate manliness with flowers and gift-giving, or they derided the proliferation of such holidays as a commercial gimmick to sell more products, often paid for by the father himself. In 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson, through an executive order, designated the third Sunday in June as the official day to celebrate Fathers Day. However, it wasnt until 1972, during the Nixon administration, that Fathers Day was officially recognized as a national holiday.

DO YOU KNOW WITH BIBLE CERTAINTY THAT HEAVEN WILL BE YOUR ETERNAL HOME?
Our Dilemma: We are, by nature, sinners who stand guilty and condemned before our Creator and Judge. In our thoughts and actions, we have disobeyed His perfect standards. We are sinners. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Romans 3:23 Our Inability: We are helpless to save ourselves. Forgiveness is a gift to be received, not a reward that can be earned. We need a Saviour. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23 Our Saviour: Because of His love for us, God provided salvation through His Son, Jesus. He became a member of the human family, lived sinlessly, and died on the cross to pay for our sins. Jesus is the Saviour! For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16 Our Response: Salvation is an individual matter and requires a personal response on the part of anyone that wants to be saved. All who acknowledge their sin and place their trust in Christ are adopted as Gods children. Whisper a sincere prayer and invite Christ to save you. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13
