Welcome to the Jump Up Internet Rescue School, the first school of its kind in South Korea and perhaps in the world. Students dont study computers at the school. They are there in order to fight an addiction, but not to drugs or alcohol. They are addicted to the Internet. The Jump Up Internet Rescue School is actually a camp which offers a 12-day programme for teenagers who cannot stop using their computers. While at the camp, participants may not use a computer, and they can only use their mobile phones for one hour a day to prevent them from playing online games by phone. The programme includes military-style physical exercise, group sessions with a psychologist and activities aimed at helping students build connections to the real world and let go of the virtual world. Although obsessive computer use has become a problem in many countries, it is particularly troubling in South Korea, where 90% of all homes are connected to the Internet. In the past few years, some computer users have died of exhaustion after playing online games for days. Up to 30% of South Koreans under the age of 18 about 2.4 million people - are at risk. Of these, about a quarter of a million show signs of real addiction. They are not able to stop themselves from using computers, and when they are prevented from logging on, they have withdrawal symptoms an uncontrollable desire to get back to the computer and strong anger when they cant. To fight this problem, the South Korean government has built 140 Internet-addiction counselling centres. There are also treatment programmes in hospitals. The Internet Rescue School, which is entirely paid for by the South Korean government, opened its doors in the summer of 2007. It is still too early to know whether or not the programme will succeed in helping youths overcome their addiction to the Internet, but the school has been receiving five requests for each available place at the camp.
