Masters Degree at CUAS

In the Bologna process Europes education ministers resolved in 1999 to align the national degree qualifications in structure and content by 2010. Bachelors and masters degree courses are now comparable all over Europe. The master builds up on the bachelors degree and is more specialised. The course is characterised by high interdisciplinary content as the knowledge taught is not narrow in scope and both theory and practice from other courses are used. As masters degree courses are oriented to the research emphases of the specific discipline their research content is high to promote new scientists. This degree isnt solely of interest to bachelors degree holders. It also offers people already in employment a higher qualification leading to better career opportunities. All masters degree courses at Cologne University of Applied Sciences are properly accredited and approved.

They usually take two years and are of modular structure. Each module can stand alone and is made up of several parts (lectures, exercises, seminars). Application, methodology and key skills knowledge is imparted as well as specialised knowledge. Each module the student passes earns him or her Credit Points so that the student can earn merit toward their degree throughout the course. The degree pass mark is made up of the degree thesis as well as these accumulated credit points. In humanities courses a Master of Arts or of Laws is awarded, in natural sciences a Master of Science or of Engineering. A bachelors degree or equivalent is required to be accepted for a masters degree course. You have the choice between consecutive (in the same or a related subject as your prior degree or equivalent) and non-consecutive courses.

Description of Content

The MA Integrated Design established in 2009, is an international and research-oriented Masters course that can be studied either consecutively after the BA Integrated Design or after a Bachelors or higher academic degree. The distinctive feature of the course is to be found in its holistic design understanding, which at KISD is both learnt and lived.

By this we mean a course that integrates various approaches, subject areas and disciplines, but also opens up paths for integration with neighbouring research and practical areas, and discourses in enterprise, science and research. The chief features distinguishing the MA from ordinary courses are the higher emphasis placed on research-relevant aspects,

25

Integrated Design | International Master Programs at Cologne University of Applied Sciences

scientific research and the complexity of the projects and demands, as well as teaching experience through project assistance and the heavy self-reliance in the development of the key aspects of study. A key aspect of the Integrated Design course is the development of approaches for Research through Design, in researchoriented design projects. This means using the associative, anticipative and strategic potential of design in the development of interfaces between varying perspectives. The appropriate choice of presentation medium will likewise, throughout the course, be picked out as central theme and continually enhanced. The students learn with a high proportion of self-motivated projects and design concepts in international collaborations to deploy their design competencies in new ways. The influence that design is able to exert on society and, conversely, the observation of the users of new designs, both play a central role.

Educational Organisation

The MA programme Integrated Design at KISD offers a unique opportunity to combine a deep understanding of design and research processes with academic and professional experience. We are looking for students with an academic degree (BA or higher, at least 4 years study time) and professional experience both in design or a related area (design and management, design and journalism, design and philosophy, design and architecture just to name a few). We are looking for professionals who want to advance and expand their competence, knowledge and understanding of design processes, strategies, concepts, cultural aspects, research and beyond. The most important part of the application is the outline of an individual project (the Self-Initiated Project), which will be the core and basis of the MA studies. With the MA programme we are aiming at setting up a Research Group with about 15 students every year with different perspectives, interests and experiences, building the foundation for strong teamwork and a sustainable network.

International Master Programs at Cologne University of Applied Sciences | Integrated Design

26

Self Initiated Project

When working on the Self-Initiated Project at KISD, you will develop a variety of perspectives, aspects and contexts in relation to your project. You will connect it to other disciplines and discourses; you will find ways to integrate your ideas into those. Therefore, in the first phase, you will get new views on your proposed project, based on your experience. In this phase, you will be supported by both the open-minded atmosphere at KISD and the support of external tutors to get both a broad reflection and a deep understanding of important aspects.

Design & Integration

The parallel module Design & Integration offers a colloquium combining personal reflection and discussions with external visiting lecturers. Tutoring and assistance in other projects and seminars at KISD will additionally offer you the experience of teaching and working with students.

Design & Culture

Research Proposal

In the second phase, you will develop a Research Proposal based on your project. Here, you will understand the value of using design as a means of research, add new facets to and create new perspectives for your project.

Design & Culture also offers courses, projects and seminars dealing with research and design and the cultural aspects of design. You will work on a case study to reflect, understand and apply your understanding of those processes.

27

Integrated Design | International Master Programs at Cologne University of Applied Sciences

Final Thesis

In the third phase, you will work out a Final Thesis. Here you will bring together all the aspects you have finalized before. The research proposal helps you to both develop and communicate a clear perspective for your work. The whole programme is accompanied by a mentoring programme and a colloquium allowing you to reflect and discuss your work and to connect with other students.

lead projects independently, both within a national and international framework. The MA Integrated Design prepares graduates for the following career paths: Designer in a leading position at management level with strategic knowledge and high innovation skills; Designer in close collaboration with business consultancies; Designer as motivating force for processes of innovation in design-related or even not-yet design-related areas (new materials, systems, services, processes); Designer with an international career in research and teaching in universities and research institutions; Designer in leading positions in the areas of public relations and publishing, based on an understanding of authorship in design; Designer, independently initiating research projects and securing collaboration and financing

Living in Cologne

Cologne, Germanys fourth-largest city is an exciting place with lots to offer. Yet its attractiveness can make finding an apartment difficult. The International Office thus strongly recommends that you start looking for a place as soon as possible. You should be devoting your first days in Cologne to other things than hunting for an apartment.

Accommodation

Like the other universities in the city, Cologne University of Applied Sciences has no student residences of its own. Rooms in student residences are assigned by the Studentenwerk, the central institution governing student services in Cologne. The Studentwerk has 86 buildings with some 4,600 rooms. There are apartments, suites for

students with children, and handicappedaccessible housing. Considering there are around 90,000 students at Colognes 11 state and private universities, the rooms go quickly, so make sure to apply early. Gummersbach, some 50km east of Cologne, has a more relaxed market. The Cologne Studentenwerk has two residences with 121 rooms. As in Cologne, application is online. Accommodation is available in student halls of residence or on the private market. Rent for a room in halls varies from around 220 EUR to 300 EUR. Further information can be found on the following website: www.kstw.de The International Office is able to assist international students in finding suitable accommodation in student residences.

Tip

In the USA they call it apartment sharing; in France they call it cohabitation; in Germany they call it Wohngemeinschaft, or WG for short. WGs are good options for saving money. Each person has his or her own room, and shares the rest (bathroom, kitchen, and living room, etc.) with the other flatmates.

Student service in the district town hall Lindenthal

The city of Cologne, in cooperation with the Cologne Studentenwerk and the universities of Cologne has developed a unique and new service offered for all students with (new) home in Cologne, which has been installed in the district town hall Lindenthal. International students and scholars can seek advice there regarding residency and registration law issues. Application procedure | visa

Applicants from Member States of the European Union, the European Economic Area, Switzerland, Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, and the USA or Switzerland do not need a visa to travel to Germany. However, they must report to the respective foreign nationals office within the first three months of their stay. Which foreign nationals office to contact depends on where you are living in Germany. Applicants from all other countries will generally already need a visa before travelling to Germany. You must apply for this visa to the relevant German diplomatic representation (embassy or consulate general). When applying for a visa, you must in any case provide evidence that you have sufficient funding for the first year of your studies. However, only the respective diplomatic representation can give you binding information on the necessary documents. You will find information on immigration regulations of the respective states and a list of all German diplomatic representations with their areas of

responsibility on the website of the German Foreign Office (www.auswaertigesamt.de). Please note that you need to apply for a visa for study or university course application purposes. A so-called tourist visa cannot be converted into a visa for study purposes in Germany. You must extend your immigration visa during the first three months of your stay at the relevant foreign nationals office. You will find a list of all German diplomatic representations with their areas of responsibility on the website of the German Foreign Office (Auswrtiges Amt) (www.auswaertiges-amt. de). The foreign nationals offices in Germany will issue no student residence permits to applicants travelling to Germany on a tourist visa. Therefore it is imperative to apply for a student visa to your German diplomatic representation. For this purpose you must submit both your notice of admission and evidence of sufficient funding. Please ask the respective diplomatic representation for information on any further necessary documents.
