My First Cross-Country Race
My first cross country race was
when I was in 7
th
standard. I got up early
and wore my house colour T-Shirt with
full pride and self-confidence. We knew
that the house victory depended on us.
I entered the parade ground seeking
blessings of all the gods, especially
J esus. With my heart full of courage I
went straight to the starting point. My
house master came to us and gave us
instructions. Of course our
appointments were the brain behind it.
The whistle was blown and all the 6
th
standards cheered us. It was one of my
unforgettable moments. I was biting my
collar so that I would not suffocate. But
after the parade ground, I got angry and
left my collar.
I ran and reached the quarters, I
saw J ayesh some 50mahead of me. I
surely thought I would reach the first
enclosure. The race was getting tougher
There I saw SubhamSinha & Anchan
near me. When I entered the parade
ground, Himanshu had just entered the
enclosure and was the first boy to reach.
Mean while Adarsh and J ayesh had
finished the race, followed by Rahul
Ranjan. At last I finished the race,
reaching the I
st
enclosure. It was the first
cross country of my life. Though our
house was Runners up, in my mind we
were the champions. I will keep in mind
that cross country where the 7
th
standards
showed their might in front of their
juniors and continuously encouraged
themto keep up the same spirit.
5136 Abhijith J.S
and the destination was far ahead.
Blood flowed faster through my nerves
and I tightened my fist, took lead. The
race was the same like our life- full of
bushes, rocks, pits etc. The main part is
that we should over come it. Soon I
reached inside where our cadets call it
"forest" My seniors used to scare us
telling that while they ran the cross
country, they saw fox, jackals, snakes
etc. But there I did not find anything.
Then my common sense started telling
me You better concentrate on your race
or else sometimes our house may not
get the trophy. My concentration was
fully on the race.
At last I reached out of the forest
and swimming pool. It is a turning point
of race. Any thing can happen at any
time. I was afraid through out the race
that I would be pushed by some one
else. I reached near the game store.

Men commonly think
according to their inclinations, speak
according to their learning, but act
according to their custom. These
famous words are from the famous
writer Francis Bacon. It means that the
day we are born, we are made to have
conditions and terms. We start getting
constant inputs from the parents
teachers, elders and various other
influences. These influences play a
major role in shaping our personality.
Most people in this world have
grown up thinking that their future and
its possibilities are limitless, but they
reach adulthood by taking things offered
by the world. Along the way, over the
years of upbringing,the negative effects
of being told You are a clum, Dont
over estmate your ability, Dont be too
optimistic and many other statements
regarding ones ability and nature result
in individual is thinking that many things

LEARNING
FROM WOMB TO TOMB
Develop the habit of positive
thinking. There may be some skills
which you might have failed to master
but by simply brooding over it you cant
avoid negative tendency.
You have to question yourself
before allowing a negative tendency. The
Question is. Is that really true
Everytime you question you learn a new
thing. It is your true learning that leads
you to the greatest rollercoaster - The
life A great man has summoned all
experiences of life in one line The
wisest mind has something yet to learn.
In fact we have never learnt anything
which is complete in itself. We learn so
little and forget so much. It is the only
treasure which follows its owner
everywhere. So it is clear why you have
to take whatever pain possible to enrich
your knowledge.
are impossible. They are not even worth
trying. In fact one forgets that every one
has his or her own abilities. You should
therfore give it a second thought and
avoid getting trapped in this conditioned
thinking. Remember the quote by the
philosopher Aristotle Learning is not a
childs play, we cant learn without
pain.
The moment you are in TENSION
You will lose your ATTENTION
Then you are in total CONFUSION
And you feel IRRITATION
Then youll spoil personal RELATIONS
Ultimately you wont get CO-OPERATION
Youll make things a COMPLICATION
Then you BP might raise a CAUTION
Avoid Tension
5084 Fibin Filal
And you may have to take MEDICATION
Instead try to think about the SOLUTINON
Many problems will be solved byDISCUSSION
Which will be better in your PROFESSION
Dont think its my free SUGGESTION
Its only for your PROTECTION
If you understand my INTENTION
Youll never be in TENSION

English is accepted as a
universal language around the globe.
Probably, there will not be any other
language which is more versatile than
English on the earth. English has also
acquired the world fame as an
international language. Now a days
internet and other such high speed
communication systems gain
prominence and in themtoo English is
used as a communication medium.
Considering our country, India, English
language has exerterd a profound in
fluence. After the British regime, English
language played a huge role in unifying
the princely states which existed inside
India during that period. In all schools
around the globe English is taught as a
primary task of childs education. The
dexterity in using English language was
at its zenith during the period of freedom
struggle in India. Learning English
enables a person to express his thought
in front of any international organization.
This English has degraded over times
and nowadays books with high literary
value are scarce. The only way to
enhance the skill in using English in a
person is by introducing good books
with chaste English to him.
In olden times children were very
good at speaking English because of their
reading habit. Now a days children are
only interested in facile comic strips which
has least literary value compared to other
books. In all the different fields like
Medicine, Engineering Astronomy etc.
English is considered as a foundation.
All international examinations are
conducted in English. Awareness
classes and programmes about natural
calamities and disasters are conducted
internationally through English.
Nowadays deadly viral diseases
are spreading at an alarming rate.
Posters depicting the ways to prevent
such diseases, symptoms of diseases
etc are mainly prepared and advertised
in English. Therefore people in the rural
areas must be aware of basic English.
In this age of outsourcing and
globalisation it is quite common that
people go out in search of jobs offering
higher salaries. The main reason for the
versatality and adaptability of English is
that, it accepts words from other
languages like German, French, Latin
etc. For example, the word Restaurant
the orgin of the word is truly from
French. Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru
became successful in attaining
independence by delivering strong
speeches in English which actually
shook the foundation of British regime
in India. Understand the power of
English and try to learn it well.

round one went to the church, and gods
powers were unquestioned.
Then, as legend goes, an apple
fell some centuries later, and instead of
eating it, Newton found the Law of
Gravity. He followed it by findings in
optics, calculus, laws of motion,
geometry etc. Principia de Mathematicia
rocked the very foundation of the idea
of an omnipotent God. The motion of
the heavenly bodies was not captained
by any god but a few mathematical
equations. Round two went to science.
Many theories of Newton were
later put under the anvil as scientists, a
new creed of man, began to find
properties and sequences in the way
things happen in our vast universe.
Later, the need to introduce dual nature
of light was felt and the ensuing
confusion was insurmountable. Then,
a clerk in a German patent office
knowing the truth. It represents the strife
towards enlightenment. No life is
complete without wondering about how
it all began. Humans take pride in being
self conscious. Therefore it is the
inherent quality of humans to be curious
about how life and subsequently,
themselves, came to be. In the dark
ages, men thought earth was the centre
of our universe and the heavens were
the abode of gods ands goddesses who
defied any understanding. Then a man
found out scientific proof that earth
revolved around the sun but the power
of ignorance was so much that he was
forced to keep his theory under cover.
Then another man, the world famous
Galileo proposed that stars were huge
fireballs and not palaces of gods. He
was lucky not to be beheaded. Why did
these men bother? They could have kept
quiet and said Ignorance is bliss. So
Nature and her secrets lay hidden
in the dark. God said "Let Newton be,
and all was light.''
It is pointless to ask what science
is, as the classical, monotonous
definition has been hammered into the
mind of millions of children throughout
the world for many centuries. But, why
science? For many students, it
represents a hurdle in their life and they
wonder why they should study it when
they have nothing to do with it
afterwards. The answer is simple.
Science is the curiosity towards

published a paper in 1905. Theories of
God and heaven were therown away.
Even science was rattled by its core. The
clerk, or Albert Einstein as was his
name, published few more papers in
1915, which we know today as the
general theory of relativity. Mass which
was taken to be constant in all equations
till then, was proved to vary with respect
to velocity. A speed limit was put on all
bodies, that is, the speed of light was
the ultimate barrier. This achievement
seems huge and wonderful, but what
led to it was a question which he asked
when he was a child what would we
see, if we were to catch up with light?
Light would no longer be light as it is
relative to the observer. It would be

Relativity caused such a major
upheaval that radical theories and
fantastic breakthroughs began to
happen by the day. Science won the
match.
There was no looking back.
Theories and hypotheses were proven
and disproven. Models were made
accurate upto the order of 10-30 units.
Even the inherent uncertainty in nature
was brought to the fore with
mathematics as the tool of exploration.
It is upto us to continue this victory march
onwards and find the truth. The
achievement would be the crowning
glory of humankind.

TheWomen of
5058
Swathi B.A.
Behind every successful man
there is a woman. But her role is seldom
undrestood. A woman is the other half
of man. Women have equal right in all
aspects like education, business, family,
political issues, or any other field which
is of importance in the progress of a
country.
Women are deprived of even the
basic joy of being literate. The enormous
talent resident in themhas never been
nurtured. They are confined to the four
walls of the houses. Dowry is another
problemfaced by women in India.
Indian Women should come
forward to take the challenge of running
the country. They should adopt a life of
5262
Vikash Kumar
The time is very precious for us.
Each and every second has its own
importance. It is said that the time we
have lost will never comeback. So, we
should think about our future not past.
We cant stop the time. The time is going.
Some people are using it and some are
misusing it. I amgoing to tell a short
story on the precious time. By listening
to this story you cant even imagine how
much valuable time is. As we know P.T.
Usha was one of the fastest women
runner of this world. In an athletic meet
she participated in 100 metre running.
But unfortunately she lost the first
position and got second position. She
lost Ist position due to difference of
1/100 minute. If 1/100th minute
consists this much importance then
think about yourself. How much time
you are spoiling. Some will say Oh! I
missed my flight because I was one
minute late. So, we should be punctual
and not waste time because time has
its own significance. It is said that we
cant comparea lakh of rupees to even
a single minute. We all should be a strict
followers of time. A person lives a very
happy life when he does all his work in
proper time. The person who doesnt
give importance to time cant achieve
his ambition. So, forbeing a successful
person we should give much
importance to the precious time.
Today
simplicity. Woman is not a play thing of
man she is not born just to satisfy the
lust of man. One should stand in the
shoes of a woman to know what her true
feelings and thoughts are. Gandhiji says
Women should avoid the extreme need
for wealth for showy dress and
decorations. Theres always a natural
scent originating fromthe inner hearts
of women. Therefore they are not
required to attract others by applying
scent.
Womens heart is very noble and
humble. They are the embodiment of
sacrifice, silent suffering, humility, faith
and knowledge. Women have the power
to understand any situation without
being taught.

Dear Friends,
The year was 1967 ... a very good
year ..as, it was the year of romance..
..We had come back, fromtaking
part in the Republic day parade, in
Delhi..and before that we were lucky to
go through, the preparatory camp at
Munnar, at least I was lucky, as I met my
girl friend Vatsala, there. We were in the
same singing group rending out one
beautiful malayalamsong after another ,
in the evenings.
Gayakare unarunaroo
Kadhikare unarunaroo; vandee
puka vandee..vandi vandi ninnepole
vayarinakathumtheeyanu ..
The day the song practice was not
there, we somehow found a way to meet ,
outside the Spencers mini mall. She
was great company during the train
journey to Delhi and back.
I became , a very ardent devotee ,
of Srikandeswara Temple in Vanchiyoor,
in Trivandrum, her house was next to
this temple.
I think, I picked up the rudiments
of writing, fromthis period, in shortest
number of words, I had to tell her, how
much, she meant to me .
After a year, of frenetic letter
writings, and risky visits to the alleys ,
behind the temple to meet her, the
romance petered out. Her parents caught
her with my letters, and laughed at her
for romancing a School boy, when she
was already in college ..
Final straw, was the caste factor.
How can a brahmin girl, even think of
marrying a Nair boy, that too a school
going boy.
Happy School days

There was nothing else, to look
forward to, except NDA results.Then
came a breather..
A trek to Courtallam falls...Mr
Pendred, our British volunteer , cum
football coach, cum, English teacher,
cum Director, of all Shakespearean
plays, like Comedy of Errors , and his
friend Smith , were willing to take us for
a trek, to Courtallam Falls , in Tamil
Nadu. ...we were to be, dropped at a
place called TENMALA, then had to
walk on foot.. Fifty kilometers , towards
Tamil Nadu border , Aryankavu , cross
over to Shenkottai, in Tamil Nadu, make
a base at CourtallamFalls 5 Kilometers
away, and then, be brought back to
SSKZM by bus..
..We trekked with our Haversacks ,
with a cheerful forest stream, keeping
us company and at odd times, old ladies
used to peek out fromtheir shanties, on
the side of the road, and berate us, why
cant you people be a little more patient
..there is a bus every Three hours to
Shencottai..
...Our British Volunteers..tried to
make our hike, a little more interesting.
They made us, sing aloud ..a British
Marching Song ..
...Roll me over, on the clover ..
Roll me over on the Clover .. ....
At Aryankavu we crossed over to
Tamil nadu, passed through Shencottai,
and reached courtallam falls.... a
refreshing bath at the water fall ..spirits
soaring.. we all were singing..
... Hurray , Hurrah ..we sing so
happily..Hurrah, Hurrah ..the place that
makes us free.and so we sang the
chorus, fromTrivandrumto the sea..
....as we were marching ..from
Pangode
Bring the good old bugle boys
ll sing another song, sing it with a
spirit that will move the wheels
along..
Sing it as we used to sing it , two
and fifty strong, as we were marching
fromPangode
Back in the school,with memories
of a Grand ..Summer of 67.

PROVED WRONG
EINSTIEN WRONG ?
5215 Naveen Hari
If extraodinary claims require
extraordinary evidences, then Scientists
involved in an experiment called OPERA
(oscillation project with emulsion-t
racking apparatus) have provided just
that, when 60 nanoseconds threaten
modern physics a sentence which is
known to all. Yes, with the discovery of
neutrinos, particles that travel faster than
light, the foundation of modern physics
is shaking.
Nautrinos fired froma supercollider
outside Geneva to an underground
laboratory in Gransasso Italy took less
time than light to get there. A beamof
light would take 2.4 milliseconds to
cover this distance. This means
neutrinos were travelling at a speed of
299,798, 454 metres per second. While
the speed of light in a vaccumis slower
at 299, 792, 458 metres per second.
This new discovery shocked scientists
all over the world. Albert Einstiens 1905
special theory of relativity that states
nothing can travel faster than light is now
in doubt. If it is proved wrong the very
foundation of modern physics will be
demolished. Another one very
Interesting fact is that if neutrinos can
travel faster than light less time for travel
may be possible. The theory is very
simple to understand. Imagine you can
run with the speed of a neutrino. You
are standing In a race track. The light
fromthe sun (any other light source)
touches your body and reflects. At the
same moment you start running. You
being faster than light reaches first in
the finishing line. When you look back
you can see your own self in the past. If
you keep running, at some stage you
may beat the light which reflected from
Akbars Court. One defect: No sound.
Because sound travels much slower. Yet
another amazing fact is that nothing can
stop a neutrino. They are formed when
stars explode. It may or may not be
proved that neutrinos travel faster than
light. If proved, New technologies will
come to existence. What I say is Hope
for the best.

As you all know the bond of
friendship is stronger than the bond of
fevi-kwik. It depends with whomyou
want to be bonded to. A strong, close,
good, true friend-ship will never sink.
To call somebody a friend means that
5002 Nandan Kumar
he is one among the few relations on
the earth that never dies. Friendship
helps to make a friend strong. You can
enjoy the love more given by the friends
if you make it close. Choosing a friend
should be slow, changing himshould
be even slower.
A friend in need is a friend indeed.
This English proverb means that, a true
friend is someone who helps you when
you are in need. Some dont know what
friendship actually means. When you are
in danger, only a true friend will guide
you and will make you free fromdanger,
that also without any harm. A friend can
see the mark of his friendship on the
earth below and the heaven above.
Remember, anyone can achieve
what he wants, even if it is difficult, with
the help of his true friends. So make
friends, attain prosperity and share it with
them. The friend who tastes his
friendship like nectar, bit by bit will relish
it forever and, besides, not overtax it.

As I was watching the Nature,
I saw a mother bird with her little one
As I was going through the village
I saw a mother feeding her child.
As I was going to the Railway station
I saw a mother hugging her child.
As I was going to the hospital,
I saw a mother sitting beside and taking care.
As I was going to the shop,
I saw a poor mother asking alms for her children.
L oving Mother
While I was sleeping and dreaming,
I saw my mother loving and caring whole night.
Then I realise the real meaning of mother
OH! Mother we cant fathomyour love
And care throughout our life.

All I have is you:
That makes me see everything as new
They seemfresh like leaf top dew
In this vast world, people like you will sure be few.
There may be many, who attract others
But only a few who influence others-like you.
You seemlike a camera as you make me still
You are also the one who makes me thrill
I feel as if you are near me now,
Reason is the one I need to know, but how?
You stood near me and made me understand
By always giving me a lending hand.

All I haveis You...
You are one of the few lucky charms,
Who causes me no kind of harm:
In thisworld, all are in a kind of race,
But I will never forget you and your face
You are appreciated by everyone
For your nature and look;
But you are most appreciated
For the hard work you took.
Please dont leave me is all I have to say to you,
as All I have is You.....

Luck is not in your hand
Work is in your hand
Your work can make luck
But luck cannot make your work.
Past is experience,
Present is experiment
and future is expectation.
Use your experience in your
experiment to achieve your expectation.
Always ask God to give you
What you deserve
not what do you desire,
It is because your desire may be few
but you deserve a lot
Remember that
You are very special
No one can play
Your role better than you
You are unique
So love yourself always.
It was raining in the night
My eyes felt on a little rain drop
He spoke to me you know!
As the rain became slow.
He rolled like a dimond
In the light of the moon
What a wonderful sight!
What a wonderful sight.
He cried suddenly
My heart became soft
Like the feather of the peacock
I spoke to himyou know!
Why are you crying little one?
My family is dying said he
Whats so wrong
To happen like that?.
Because the people pollute us replied he
Suddenly some one called me
It was a dream, indeed a good one
I will not forget my little friend and his family
Who appeared in my dream.

The growing population is a big
challenge to India and world as well. The
latest baby born and the 102 year old
Hilla Sorab Billimoria of Kolkota
represent, between them, two ends of
Indias complex population story.
At one end are the staggering
numbers. With an estimated 1.21 billion
people, India is a Population billionaire
next only to China (1.34 billion), as the
UN population fund described the
country in a recent report titled India @
7 billion. By 2025 India will overtake
China to become the worlds most
populous country, with the numbers
expected to exert enormous pressure on
natural resources.
That 11 babies of the 51 born
everyminute are in India. The lowest
ranking Indian states on the human
development Index, highlights the
5084 Fibin Filal
imperatives of Indian planners providing
acess to food, water, health, shelter,
sanitation, education and jobs to all, the
same time, balancing these against
scarce resources, safeguarding the
environment and protecting against
climate change. But Indias decadal
populaiton growth rate, which touched
a high of over 24 percent in the 1970s,
is slowing down. According to the 2011
census, it was 17.64 per cent in the last
decade. That presents both
opportunities and challenges. Lucknow,
the capital of Indias Most populous
state, also has one of its worst sex ratios:
there are just 899 girls to 1000 boys, a
sign of endemic descrimation. India now
has its worst ever child sex ratio: there
are just 914 girls for every 1000 boys
accordig to the 2011 census. Ten years
ago, the 2011 census found it was 927:
1000. The decline has continued apace
since 1961; Though things are
improving in some state among them
Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Himachal
Pradesh, Mizoram, Tamil Nadu and the
Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the
overall picture is grim.
Indias maternal mortality ratio- the
number of women dying due to maternal
causes per 1,00,000 live births- is
pegged at 212. Fifty new borns among
every 1000 also die. India is struggling
to knock down these numbers, but has
had limited success. Perhaps more
important, challenge is the falling sex
ratio and the Vanishing girl population.
The shaming numbers underscore the
fact that laws have done nothing to curb
female foeticide or change the cultural
preference for a boy child.
A ll along he sat in darkness alone
Shabby, dirty and his mind torn
Alone he sought his way out
Still in his mind remains a doubt
Why was he born here.
In the midst of darkness and fear
Why couldnt he die now
Why was he here now
Among the cruel and vile minds
Who try to stab you frombehind.
He was broken at last
When she came back frompast
He couldnt believe what he saw
As everything was against the law
Love and hate stood against
Love & Hate
With himin middle and all in haste.
He really didnt know-
Should he stand with hate or love
He stood beside love and sought
But the hate won the war he fought
And now he took a new birth
With anger and hate in his mind
But it was really meant to be his death.

A new school will pose new
challenges at every level. Infrastructure,
curriculum, teachers, classmates, all
sorts of rules and regulations, new
expectations, achievement standards,
dos and donts .... all these and more.
Dealing with these pressures can
be really hard if there is little support
and guidance. If you have ever been in
a situation like this or have friends who
were new to school until they met you,
you will relate to what I am saying.
Helping new students to settle into a
school is a prime responsibility that
parents, teachers and other students
must fulfil.
If you are a new child in your
school and are feeling lost and lonely
remember that you are not alone. A
transition or change is always difficult
to deal with, but it is a phase and shall
pass. While you make efforts to settle
in, seek help.
How can I settle into my new
school?
Look out for support among your
classmates, remember you need them
more than they need you now; besides
they dont know you well enough to be
your friends.
Share with themthe freshness of
your experiences, the stories that they
may have never heard before and win
themover! Share the glad times and even
some sad times.
Ask your teachers for help. Seek

CHANGING SCHOOL
extra time with your teachers to help you
with the new curriculum, various
teaching methods, use of technology
and systems in the classroomand the
new rules and regulations.
It is seen that achievement and
performance at school often takes a
beating when we shift froma familiar to
an unfamiliar style of working. Do not
panic.
Gradually but surely, as you
become comfortable and more familiar
in the new setting, you will also be able
to perform according to your ability.
Teachers can help you develop new
study skills required to cope with the
demands of the new curriculum. Talk to
the school counseller who could help
you with ways to smoothen the journey
and settle down into the new system.
If you are a student who has new
fellow students in class, you can do a
lot to help. Even if you have enough
friends and do not feel the need to make
new ones, remember, a little selfless act
can go a long way. New friends bring
with them new challenges and new
experience which can enrich your lives
beyond measure.
When you help a lonely heart,
someone will surely be there for you
when you need a pat on the back during
rough times.
Remember, this too shall pass!

In that Marvellous Garden
I think sometimes
How wonderful would it be
Our classes in a green beautiful garden
In the midst of twittering birds,
The trees full of flowers
Butterflies all around
In the silence of the nature
The fresh air all around
Refreshes our heart
Our mind ignores all the worries
Our body gets relaxed.

The interesting lessons
We enjoy the pleasures of studies
They just motivate,
We would do all ways the best

The beautiful sight refreshes again,
We enjoy our lesson then
With happiness and joy.

The Importance of
of the world, it is our duty to make a
better world and education is what
empower the children to do so.
Therefore it is imperative that they learn
the basement of the past to make a strong
future.
History has always been a weak
spot for many students though not
always. This difficulty has arisen mainly
due to the fact that they do not
understand why they should
learn about dead kings and
emperors, long past
events and seemingly
unimportant dates.
They quiver at the
thought of long
boring lecture on the
political systems of
Europe and Industri-
alization and colo-
nialisation. It is this
view of history
that discourages them from liking
history. They should know that the use
of studying history stems fromthe fact
that it is to guide themin the future.
Teaching history must be a holistic
learning experience for the students.
Events depicted in the history
lessons of students are of great
importance. These are the events that
changed the course of the future. Events
like the world wars, mechanization and
industrialization are what made the
present as it is. Periods of history like
the dark ages and Renaissance tell us of
the revival of mankind from long
dullness and sorrow. Such events, if
repeated will change the face of earth.
History helps us to be careful in our steps
and work for a better future by learning
fromthe past. Historical dates are also
important as it catalogs the falls and
leaps of mankind. Wars fought long ago
and its results persuade us to work
for peace. Such an important
subject is an unavoidable part of a
budding youths educational
curriculum.
Another aspect which makes
history boring and fearful to
students is the interpretation of
history as his story. Students

History is the study of our pasts.
It is important to study the past so as to

Rishikesh S. Chandran
believe that history is just a story of a
man or a king and it has nothing to do
with reality. This is another barrier in
making history a popular subject.
Understanding the importance of history
as a study of the past, to make a better
future is necessary for this purpose.
Students should be encouraged to
discuss various events and people so
that they can understand the situation of
the society at that time clearly.
Introducing new methods of teaching
like history triv*a and comic strips of
important events simplify the hardships
often wrongly associated with learning
history.
Such new methods along with
understanding the need to learn history
will make the students better prepared for
the future. They learn the values
displayed by various people or even
countries in the past and can act
accordingly for their own betterment.
Moreover it helps to build an
understanding between what has to done
and what should be stopped. History also
helps us to understanding the earth better
and for conserving its resources. The
bloodshed and massacres seen in
history teach human beings of the
consequences of their own actions.
Revolutions and rebellions teach us what
humanity wants and how best to rule
them. It shows us the hardships and
sufferings of people, now long forgotten
to ensure that such things are not
repeated. History guides us in our path
towards progress by showing what
difficulties and problems humanity faced
in past during its relentless driven
towards progress. It helps us cope with
difficult situations by showing the
courage and co-operation of human in
the long gone centuries.
Learning history helps avoiding
mistakes or mishaps in our pursuit of
excellence and for a student such a
guidance in his activities is of utmost
importance. Therefore history, the study
of our pasts that allows us to understand
the present better and plan a good and
happy future is very important. These
facts reiterate the value of learning
history.

Power tends to corrupt and
absolute power corrupts absolutely.
There are the words of J ohn Aton, who
commends upon a dirty reality that exists
in all parts of the world - corruption
means lack of integrity. It is an act done
to take some advantage inconsistent with
official duty and rights of others. It is
not just about bribery, but also involves
the abuse of political power for private
gain.
Corruption is a word used by many
people in India. India has now come
under the spotlight as a highly corrupted
nation with cases such as common
wealth games scam, 2G spectrum
allocation scam, Bofors scamAdarsh
housing society scam, BSNL looting by
Dayanidhi Maran etc. An alumnus of the
prestigerous NDA and an air force
officer, Suresh, Kalmadi was chief
organiser of the common wealth games.
But he was arrested and now is
languishing in Tihar jail for having
allegedly given the conducting rights to
a foreign company at high price and thus
causing heavy loss to the government.
Then came A.Raja, former telecom
minister for having sold the 2G spectrum
to those companies which did not fulfil
the conditions for detaining it. About
4,327 lakh crores was the loss to the
exchequer. This money was illegally
transferred to Kalaingar TV through
certain firms. MP Kanimozhi and Shard
kumar, who are the owners of Kalaingar
TV are also in Tihar jail after the CBI
investigation on 2G scam. The
corruption cases even dates back to the
time of Indira Gandhi. Illegal transfer of
arms by a company called Bofors in India
caused serious revolts at various places.
The former chief minister of
Maharashtra, Ashok Chavan is also
under the scamwith regards to Adarsh
housing society scam. The latest is the
looting of BSNL by the union textiles
minister, Dayanidhi Maran, who was the
then telecomminister. He allegedly used
323 telephone lines in Chennai which
was used by Sun TV network for transfer
of heavy audio and video data thus
causing a loss of about 400 crore
rupees to the government. If such levels
of corruption exists in the high levels of
government and bureaucracy, we can
well imagine the situation in lower levels.
A common man has to bribe even a clerk
in a panchayat office to get his things
done. This is an ugly reality and we are
to be blamed for it.
Inspite of all this, I still believe that
India can be rid of corruption. First of
all, the attitude of the people has to
change. When they bribe an officer or
pay money to disobey the traffic rules
they are watched by their children, who
come to a conclusion that money power
can break any laws. So the parents have
to teach the children about values and
ethics. So it helps to check corruption
fromthe basic levels.
There are many institutions set up
by the constitution to check corruption.
One of these is the central vigilance
commission. They conduct
investigations about firms and
politicians inorder to prevent corruption.
Another body is the Vigilance and Anti
Corruption Bureau (VACB) We can file
our complaints in VACB and they will
probe into the case. Another way is the
Grievance Redressal Machinery by
which one can gather information about
a particular deal and he finds something
wrong can file a case. The trust of
people on judiciary has been lost as
even judges are corrupt these days. We
can also consult a Public Information
Officer to file a case against corruption
issues. A major law which helps us to
curbe corruption is the Right to
Information Act. According to this we
can gather information fromany public
office in India by filing an application
fromand nominal fee. This provides us
information about the working of
different government departments,
other than those related to national
security.
Another much sought about bill is
the J an Lokpal Bill. This came into
consideration after the struggle of Anna
Hazzare against the corruption. Lokpal
committee headed by Pranab Mukherji
is under the drafting of this proposed
bill. People believe that once the bill is
passed by the parliament corruption can
be stopped to a large extent. The
members can include former or retired
CBI officers, Vigilence Officers and
former chief justices of both supreme
court and high court. This committe will
broke into the functioning of all
government departments and will
investigate cases of corruption against
politicians and bureaucrats. This body
will be free fromthe control of judiciary
and prime minister. So they can take
independent decisions. It also empowers

When I saw you first,
With your beautiful smile on your face;
Since then I love you,
Like no one loved you,
Like I never loved anyone before
And I wish you to see,
My love was enough for you and me.
And fromthe moment I started loving you,
Fromthat moment my meaning of life changed.
I reshuffled my entire way of living
And got a transformation.
4643 Abhishek. K.R.
I did it coz of you,
And coz I love you.
But that dark day you could take it nomore,
And decided to leave me alone;
Since that day I writhe
Its hard to remember how I felt all these years;
But what a miracle it is,
Still I love you.
Time always kills the pain but its opposite to me;
Years passed away and still days are not easy.
I cant survive anymore as this life is of no use without love.
And Ive lost loved ones in my life.
And this I beg not only for me.
But for all beautiful people who are in love;
And dying for what I pine
And if you cant, then call me to you,
So that you and I never be apart;
And coz I know my fate,
Sooner or later we have to be together
So why not it be today, right now.
Coz I just cant resist anymore,
Coz I love you,
And Coz youre the only reason I believe in love....
158
Often I wonder why life is a
vicious circle of ifs. Is there any stage
of life, any walk of life or any act of life
that is untouched by if? No. If you study
Well,...If you are disciplined,... If
I get good marks....... If my father
permits me,... If I win a lottery,... If it
doesnt rain,... If you are late,... If I get a
good job,... If I earn a better salary,...The
list of ifs is infinite. They are as frequent
as the tick of the seconds hand of a
lock; they are as proliferate as the grains
of sand on the beach or the stars in the
sky.
The fact I realize out of this is that
ifs make life very conditional; the
scope and possibilities narrow down;
life becomes very uncertain and loses
its charmand challenge because we can
always blame the ifs for our failures-
we can turn around and say, See, I am
late because the bus is late; I wouldnt
have been late if the bus had been on
time. Now if I dont have the scope to
blame it on the bus, I would be more
careful to get ready and get out to the
bus stop a little more early and ensure
that I board a bus in time to reach my
destination at least on time, if not in time
A LIFE WITHOUT
(like reaching the office on time
especially when I have an ill-tempered
boss). In the absence of ifs there is
infinite scope for spontaneity,
innovation and creativity. It is because I
myself own up the responsibilities for
all my actions without ever trying to shift
blame either on to people around me or
my circumstances. Dont you think such
a life would be more rewarding and
satisfying?
Now, what is the charm here?
What is the advantage of a life without
ifs? It will, first of all, make me a man.
It makes me believe in myself and the
innumerable possibilities that lie both
within and around me. Secondly, it will
turn around my entire disposition and
attitude. When this happens, I begin to
look at people, things and circumstances
not as part of the problembut as part of
the solution. They all become
charioteers and guardian angels that
God has sent to intervene (not interfere)
in my life according to His great plan.
Thus I begin to appreciate my bond with
my fellow beings (be it students, family
members, neighbours or co-workers)
and draw strength and inspiration from
it. And now there unfolds in life an
unfathomable depth of joy, satisfaction
and the bliss of co-existence.
Life is an unconditional gift of
God. (The story of creation doesnt
mention about any conditions that God
laid down before creation man!) Why
should I subject it to numerous
conditionalities and rid it of all charms?
In a life without ifs I can be more
imaginative, innovative, creative,
assertive, and productive. Then I shall
be able to draw out the best of my
essence and existence. Agree? We can
always agree to disagree. Thank you.

The year-long Golden Jubilee Celebrations have come to an end. The elegant inaugural function was made
memorable by the gracious presence of Shri A K Antony, the Union Minister for Defence and the breath-taking
finale was graced by Sri Oommen Chandy, Chief Minister of Kerala and Sri Pallam Raju. Minister of State for
Defence. Between these two major functions there have been a number of programmes sprinkling delight
round the Golden Jubilee year.
A tree is known by its fruits- The innumerable Kazhaks occupying enviable positions in the Defence
Services as well as in other walks of life will vouch for the unique recipe they have received from this great
institution for a happy and successful life. If the first fifty years was an achievement, the next fifty years is
going to be a challenge - A daunting challenge to remain on top, a challenge to perpetuate the rich legacy we
have inherited from the pioneers of this institution. Let us face this challenge with grit and guts.
I hope that the Golden Jubilee issue of The Kazhak Cadet will provide you with moments of delight
and the little jottings of our young minds will amuse you beyond expectation. May the light kindled by our
pioneers guide our future path.
