The National Dairy Council Urges Us All To Support Our Nations Dairy Farmers. According to the Council, Milk is an effective exercise recovery drink due to its powerful nutrient package that supplies the nutrition the body needs after a workout. Milk has carbohydrates to help refuel the body; protein to help reduce muscle breakdown and stimulate growth; and fluid and electrolytes to aid in rehydration. Drinking milk after resistance training has been shown to increase the bodys ability to make new muscle and may help improve body composition. In addition, recent studies have shown that drinking milk after an endurance workout may help reduce muscle damage and improve muscle recovery, which in turn may help the body perform better during its next workout.

BATTENKILL CREAMERY, located on Route 30 in Salem, New York is owned and operated by Donald and Seth McEachron, 4th and 5th generation farmers, respectively, and their wives, Tracy and Yvonne, respectively. We spoke with Seth McEachron about how the creamery came into existance. He said, Well, I worked on our farm since I was able to, but my Dad wanted me to be sure that farming is what I chose to do for a living. So, he packed me off to college and strongly urged me to work in the outside world to see if I liked it better. So, I went to college where I studied business and economics and thereafter worked for a financing company now know as Farm Credit East. One day I told him I would like to return to farming. He said, Okay, but this is not the best time. Milk prices are on the floor. Well, we brainstormed a bit on what to do to make the farm profitable. My Dad suggested we could start our own milk processing and bottling operation. That seemed pretty daunting to me, but we looked into it. The investment in time and money would be huge! And, there was no guarantee that we would succeed. We decided to take the risk, and the risk included losing everything. Even though success was not guaranteed, we decided to give it a try. In February of 2008 we began processing and bottling milk. Our first week we produced and distributed 400 gallons of milk. In February of 2009 we started producing our super premium ice cream. Today, we have 25 employees, milk 375 cows daily, produce and distribute 25,000 gallons of milk weekly, andmany pints, quarts, 1/2 gallons and 5 gallon containers of our super premium ice cream. The milk and ice cream the McEachrons produce come exclusively from their own cows. (They do buy some milk from other farmers, but that milk is used for production for some retailers who do not carry the Battenkill Creamery label.) They raise all their own hay, grass and corn silage on 1000 acres+/-, and purchase necessary supplemental grains mostly from Whitmans Feed Store in North Bennington, Vermont. As a result, their cows average 75 lbs per day and their milk contains 4-4.2% butter fat. Make no mistake, Battenkills achievements have not been a walk in the park. These folks are hard working and dedicated. Long hours and times of near exhaustion are required. But, they have done it, and continue to do it week after week, with consistant quality results. In the processing of the milk produced by their Holsteins, Battenkill does some things differently that result in a superior product. Most importantly, however, is their ability to get their products on retail store shelves or to the comsumer directly within 24-48 hours after the cows are milked! Fresh to you! That compares to up to two weeks for other and larger producers. As a result, the creamery recently won the award for the HIGHEST QUALITY MILK IN NEW YORK STATE. They were presented the title at the State Fair in Syracuse, NY. The title was awarded by Cornell Universitys Department of Food Science.

To receive this award they competed against twenty-three milk producers, from Saratoga Springs to Buffalo, NY. Battenkill Valley Creamery is the first Farmer/Producer/Bottler to ever receive this prestigious award! Seth says, We are overjoyed and extremely honored to have won this award. We want to thank all of our local and loyal customers for supporting our business and buying Truly Local and the #1 Milk in NYS! We will continue to strive towards providing you the highest quality in Milk and Ice Cream for years to come. We strongly suggest that you visit Battenkill Creamery, where you can sit and enjoy their wonderful ice cream, and where you can purchase thier milk and other products produced by local growers and manufactures. Here is a lst of some of the items you can buy: Ice Cream, available in pints, and quarts, 5-quart tubs and 2.5 gallon tubs available for wholesale, including Mint Chocolate Chunk, Chocolate Chunk, Cookie Dough, Vanilla, Chocolate, Coffee, Black Raspberry, Peppermint Stick, Butter Pecan, Maple Walnut, Strawberry, Rum Raisin, Peanut Butter Cup, Pumpkin (Seasonal), Cookies n Crme, Coffee Heath. The Gulping Gourmand

Periodic Discourse Concerning Dining in Our Area.
I went to THE APPLE DINER on Route 4 in Hampton, New York (just across the line from the Whitehall Town Line) I ordered chicken & biscuits. The chicken was tender, the biscuits were melt in your mouth good. The best part of the meal, however, was the butternut squash. I have never had better! Because the meal was so good, I decided to try the raspberry pie. The crust was okay and the raspberry filling was just the right tartness. (To my way of thinking, anyway.) The price was very reasonable. Rating: Very Good for Lunch. Rating Chart: Excellent, Very Good, Okay, Not Bad, Not Good, Awful SEMBRICH HOSTS SEAGLE COLONY SEASON PREVIEW SELECTIONS FROM EUGENE ONEGIN, ALBERT HERRING, STREET SCENE AND 42ND STREET The Sembrich, located at 4800 Lakeshore Drive in Bolton Landing, hosts a Seagle Colony Season Preview on Wednesday, June 26, at 1:30 p.m. Admission is $20. Seagle Music Colony in Schroon Lake is the oldest summer vocal training program in the United States and the premier opera and musical theatre producing organization in the Adirondack region of upstate New York. This year, the talented young singers from the Seagle will present selections from Eugene Onegin, Albert Herring, Street Scene and 42nd Street in advance of the Colonys summer season which features seven mainstage concerts. From its beginning in 1915 and to this day, young singing actors travel from across the country to study with the wonderful faculty and staff that gather every summer on the hill. In addition to invaluable performance experience in opera and musical theater, each student receives weekly music coachings and private voice lessons by the exceptional faculty. Students also take part in career development classes, acting and dance lessons. Further, they sing in master classes for famous singers and artist managers, and learn the ins and outs of the world of opera and musical theater. About the Sembrich The Marcella Sembrich Memorial Association, Inc. (MSMA), founded in 1940, honors international opera singer Marcella Sembrich at her former teaching studio and woodland retreat on Lake George, by continuing the tradition of musical performances. Each summer, renowned international musicians perform in The Sembrich Studio reminiscent of the chambers and salons in which chamber music was first played. For more information, visit www.thesembrich.org or contact The Sembrich at (518) 644-2431.

CHANCE TO DISPLAY PROJECTS- Warren County Youth, 5 to 19 years of age, are invited to exhibit items they have made in school, in Scouts, or just did for fun at home at the 2013 Warren County Youth Fair on Saturday, August 10th. All youth have the opportunity to earn ribbons. In addition, youth 5 to 19 years of age have the opportunity to earn cash premium awards from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets for their work. Exhibit categories range from creative arts, photography, clothing and textile projects, to pets, food, natural resources, vegetable gardening, horticulture, and mechanical sciences. All projects are subject to the rules for specific departments and fair books are currently available free of charge at the Cornell University Cooperative Extension office during office hours of 8:30AM to 4:30PM Monday through Thursday. Judging Day for the exhibits is scheduled for Friday, August 9th from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the fairgrounds on Schroon River Road in Warrensburg. The youth and their exhibits are judged based on the capability of the youth, and not by comparing one youth and/or exhibit against another (referred to as the Danish system; this allows for more than one placement at each level). Some exhibits will be selected to go to the New York State Fair in Syracuse. The judging experience helps youth gain appreciation of workmanship and helps improve their skills, techniques, and confidence. The exhibits must be displayed for public viewing on Saturday, August 10th from 9:00AM to 4:00PM at the fairgrounds. Exhibit entries are due to the CCE office by July 15th. For more information on how to exhibit at the Youth Fair please contact the Cornell Cooperative Extension Education Center in Warrensburg (623-3291 or 668-4881) or visit Extensions web site at: http:// www.cce.cornell.edu/warren/ CLAM STEAM- THE FISH CREEK ROD AND GUN CLUB ANNUAL CLAM STEAM FOR 2013 WILL BE HELD ON SATURDAY 10 AUGUST 2013 FROM 12 NOON THRU 9PM AT THE CLUB HOUSE ON ROUTE 32 SOUTH OF VICTORY TICKETS $40.00 Full Steam ticket or $30.00 Chicken Ticket For Tickets or Information CONTACT TOM: 491-8194 OR 507-6308 OR CLUB HOUSE 695-3917 TICKETS MUST BE PURCHASED BY 4 AUGUST 2013
