The God Who Answers With Fire

38

Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. 39When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, The LORD--he is God! The LORD--he is God! 1 Kings 18:38,39

This is one of the most violent and dramatic showdowns in the Bible. On one corner were King Ahab, Queen Jezebel, their false gods Baal and Asherah, and 950 false prophets who had succeeded in misleading most of the nation. And on the other corner was Elijah, the prophet of God who seemed to be standing alone. Elijah issued the ultimate challenge: Call on your gods. Ill call on mine. The god who answers by fire is the real God. The false prophets performed all kinds of bizarre rituals, shouting till their voices were hoarse. After hours of doing this, there was no answer. Elijah built a simple altar, soaked it with water, and prayed for God to move. Then Gods fire fell and burned up everything, leaving no doubt in everyones mind who the true, powerful God was. As we prepare for Ignite, all we have done is prepare the altar like Elijah. In fact, this isnt just true during the conference but in every aspect of our lives. All we do is prepare the altarwe make room for God to move and then ask Him to answer with fire. We know God has answered when there is a lasting change in our lives, confirming in our hearts that He is the real God.

REFLECT
Do you believe that God listens to you when you pray? How convinced are you that He is able and willing to answer you? Are there times that you feel outnumbered like Elijah, like you are standing alone for God? What keeps you holding on in faith?

RESPOND
Pray and worship God now because there is no one and nothing like Him! Ask God to deliver you from whatever is concerning you right now. Take confidence in the fact that you worship a mighty God Who responds to the prayers of His people.

Our God, The Consuming Fire

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29for our God is a consuming fire. Hebrews 12:28,29
28

People have often said that the Bible is full of promises from God. There are promises of blessing, peace, health, and many more. But this one promise from God often gets overlooked. God promises to shake everythingour lives, our campuses, our cities, and nations. God brings shaking to our lives because we all have a tendency to become attached to the wrong things. We look for love and fulfillment in wrong relationships. We think that success and academic achievement will give us significance. We want to be popular because we think thats when we will feel loved. God knows that these will never satisfy us. So He shakes our lives to remove them, and He replaces them with unshakeable peace, love, joy, blessing, and happiness that only come from Him. God is a consuming fire. He will burn up the things that are not from Him. He loves you too much to let these temporary, sinful, and wasteful things remain. Are you experiencing Gods shaking now? Dont be discouraged or give up hope. God is only removing the shakeable things so that you can have His kingdom that cannot be shaken.

REFLECT
How do you respond to Gods shaking? Do you often find yourself resisting it? Do you grumble or do you see it as an opportunity to grow in faith and in your relationship with Him? Which area of your life do you feel God is shaking right now? What do you think should be your response?

RESPOND
Thank God for the shaking thatHe does in your life. Acknowledge that He cares for you enough for Him to rid you of what is unnecessary so only whats necessary will remain. Stop resisting the shaking. Pray that God will sustain you all throughout so you will fully enjoy the fruit of His perfecting work in your life.

Acts 2:1-21 Matthew 3:11,12 Acts 1:4-8

Fire from the Holy Spirit

They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:3,4
3

God constantly presented Himself as fire in the Old Testament. He was the bush that would not burn up with Moses. The Israelites saw the mountain of God covered with fire. Elijah saw Gods fire burn up the sacrifice. But for all of these scenarios, the manifestation would end and they would have to wait for Gods next big move. Until Jesus came and promised the Holy Spirit. After He left, the Holy Spirit came and filled the disciples. Their lives were never the same after that. They spoke in new tongues. They laid hands on sick people and they were healed. They had the ability to obey Gods commands. The ones who were afraid were now courageous. The ones who doubted now had strong faith. The Holy Spirit is God Himself living inside every believer. The Holy Spirit gives us the ability to be a witness for Jesus. By His power, we can expect the sick to be healed when we pray for them. We can know that thoughts of God to guide us and give us wisdom. He gives us the boldness and compassion we need to share to others. He guides us into Gods call for our lives.

REFLECT
What do you need the Holy Spirit to give you today? Strength to obey His commands? Peace of mind? Wisdom to make the right decision? Conviction for sins? How does the revelation that God is with you change the way you look at life? What will be different about your choices and actions?

RESPOND
Ask the Holy Spirit to be with you today. He knows what you will face and He is all that you need to overcome it. Make this a daily habit.
