Final Project Brief introduction to training Introduction to the training The training needed for Burr is integrating technology into the classroom. The training will be based on introduction to the certain websites as well as apps. The training is designed to connect teachers with new ways to engage the students through technology and introduce websites and a variety of apps to enhance the student learning, while giving teachers more tools and resources for lessons. The way to make this training the most effective it can be, would be to show each teacher how they can use their web pages. A school website was created a few years ago, but never really utilized. Each teacher was given a web page of their own so that is already in place. The goal is to have each teacher use the technology given in the training on a regular basis and shown through their web pages, such as links or student work. The staff will have been given a survey on their technology knowledge. The purpose of this portion is to see if they have any prior knowledge of websites or apps, also to see if they have or currently use any in their classrooms. The staff will be given an opportunity to express if what they used worked or didnt work and why? Analysis What type of training is required? Burr Elementary Community School is an urban school in the city of Hartford. The school is not your typical school; it is a K-8 grade level school. The school has 3 levels of education, primary (K-2); primary second (3-5); and secondary (6-8). The district has been

Final Project moving forward with technology for the past 5 years, budgeting money for new equipment such as smart boards, PCs and lap tops. Burr was recently equipped with a website and for teachers a few years ago and this can be a great asset to them. Being able to connect with the parents through the website is very important. Teachers will be able to show student work, show lesson ideas and even have links to site that students can use at home. Connecticut Master Test (CMT) is moving to computer testing, so what better way to introduce teachers to technology. In an article from the Hartford Courant it states that Connecticut will replace Mastery test with computerized, personal test in two years (Megan 2012). This is a great way to connect better with the students by using more technology such as the apps and websites that will be introduced. The teachers need to become more familiar with websites and apps. The hope is that the teachers will feel more comfortable implementing the websites and apps into their daily lesson plans. The teachers will now have to use technology since the state will be moving to computerized tests. The primary second and secondary classes will be able use the website, Socrative (Socrative 2010). This site allows teachers to create the questions that can tailor to the CMT questions. This can be a very valuable tool to teachers who already have questions from the study guides that are given to each teacher in the beginning of each school year. Most teachers have saved their guides over the years and have created a study guide for the students. For the primary and primary second grades, the teachers will be introduced to a few apps such as; Spell Til You Drop From Reading Laboratory 2.0 (McGraw Hill 2012), ABC Phonics Long Vowel Words Free (Abitalk 2012), Speech sounds on Cue for iPad lite (Bishop 2011) and
3

Final Project The Opposites (Mindshapes Limited 2012). Here teachers can tailor their learning environments to the students. Teachers can set up work a station that allows the students to use these apps and websites. Primary grades will also be given the 3rd grade CMT study guide, since that is the

first time those students begin to take the tests. How will it close the training or instructional gap? The survey will provide the necessary data to show the staffs prior knowledge of technology. This training will close the gap to technology understanding and give more insight to the resources that are out there. It is believed that this training of websites and apps can aid in implementing the tools into their lesson plans. According to a news article from Arizonas Deseret News, it says district scores from the state as a whole have moved up (Lenz, 2011). As we move into the 21st century, technology is ever growing and changing. Students have technology at their finger tips with devices such as laptops, tablets and even smart phones. This is why this training is so important for Burr so that teachers can stay current and engage the students through technology. Giving the teachers some resources and tools to enhance and engage the students more in lessons can be very valuable for the teachers. Audience/Population analysis: There is no organization other than presenting this integrating technology into the classroom by Victor Rivera, the principal of the school asked that this be presented to the staff. This professional development training will be conducted for all staff members of the Alfred E. Burr Community School. The understanding is that most of the teachers have no prior knowledge of how to integrate technology into the classroom. A survey will be conducted prior to the training that will show that. Since the training will take place on the first day back from
4

Final Project summer vacation. The survey will be sent out via email to let teachers know this survey needs to be filled out in a timely manner. Within the survey several questions will be asked about the staff, such as, their learning styles (visual, auditory or verbal). This way the presenter will have a clear understanding of the audience. What type of training facilities and technology are currently available? Alfred E. Burr Community School has a computer lab which has about 25 computers. There are quite a few classrooms that have anywhere from 4 to 6 computers. Almost all of the computers have on-line capabilities with the exception of a few that are very old and used for word documents or training for typing. The school is also equipped with Wi-Fi in case some teachers want to use their own personal computers or tablet devices. The ELL (English Language Learners) teachers have about 12 IPads that they have received through grants. It is believed that they also have a budget for purchasing apps through the devices. The special education teachers will allow the 12 IPads to be used for this training purpose. The principal has allocated money next year for 30 IPads that will be on a cart. Teachers will be allowed to sign up and sign out the cart when they need to use them. A schedule will go out monthly to allow every teacher an opportunity to use the IPads. Review the steps/skills needed. Teachers will be able to do the following tasks given to them from the instructor to show mastery of content through training; 1. Set up their web page through the schools website. This can be done using their preps per district contract. This will be seen by an administrator or presenter to see if in fact it was used.
5

Final Project 2. Use at least 1 website and app resource given to them in a lesson plan. These will be seen by an administrator. Lesson plans are to be handed in once a week per principals request. 3. Be observed by either an administrator or trainer using the resources given to them. Administrators are to observe teachers 3 times throughout the year. At least one formal and one informal. Trainer will not report back to administrator, rather just observe to see if the lesson has technology embedded in it. Of the steps detailed in the task analysis, which need to be part of the training? The teachers will be able to show their mastery through an evaluation process. This process will be evaluated through their web pages, lessons and observations. Teachers will be given a few weeks to set up their web pages, it is their responsibility to keep the web page up to date. Situational analysis In order for this training to be presented effectively, the internet connection will need to be tested. Projector needs to be fully functioning and in working order with cable to laptop. A power source will need to be available in the cafeteria. Extension cord will need to be available, for this the custodians will need to provide. Sound system will need to be in working order, should be on the cart that the health teacher used all year. Drop screen will need to be down for presentation which is located in the cafeteria.

Final Project Media/Technology analysis Teachers will be encouraged to bring in personal electronic devices such as laptops, tablets or simply use smart phones. Websites Socrative, Classroom Dojo and Halfbaked (Quandary 2 Arneil, Holmes, 2003) which is software that will need to be downloaded onto computers. These sites will be more for the middle school levels; however the Classroom Dojo can be used for the entire K-8 school. The apps that will be used will be primarily for K-5 is as follows: ABC Phonics Long Vowel Words Free (Abitalk, 2012), Spell Til You Drop from Reading Laboratory 2.0 (McGraw Hill Education 2012), Sentence-opoly (Layne, Bill 2013), The Little Red Hen- A little Golden Book App (Random house digital Inc., 2011), Socrative.com or the app (Socrative, 2010), Classroom Dojo (Class twist. Inc,. 2011), The Opposites (Mindshapes Limited, 2012) and Speech Sounds on Cue for iPad lite (Bishop, 2011). Design Schedule The analysis, design and development will all be conducted over the summer. The implementation of the training will be on August 21, 2013. The staff will go through the training beginning at 1PM and ending at 4PM. An introduction to the training will begin promptly at 1PM. The presentation will last till 3PM, and then the staff will be given 30 minutes to work together or individually on the resources given to them. The staff will report back to the cafeteria by 3:30PM so that instructor can answer and question and see their lesson plans that were handed out. The evaluation on this presentation will be emailed out with instructions on how to complete it on line. The staff will have till September 4, 2013 to complete the survey.

Final Project Course outcomes and objectives The teachers will be able to implement one website to their lesson plans. The teachers will also link a website to their web page. The outcome of this training is to give the teachers more resources to use in their classes. Learning theory The learning theory will be to simply use the resources given at the presentation to support student learning. Using the tools presented to enhance and engage students through technology. The theory is to allow the students to explore through the sites and apps provided to them to bring the gap to the standardized testing CMT. According to the latest profile which is from 2011, Hartford school district shows that from grades 3-8 reading is way down compared to the rest of the state (CSDE 2011). Lesson Structure The trainer will be a research each website and now the features that are offered. There are some great tools within each website that the trainer will share with the staff when training. The websites that are chosen for all staff will be Classroom Dojo (Classic Twist, Inc. 2011). This site allows teachers to take attendance; and give the students behavior checks. This is important because you can track students behaviors in classes. Teachers can also see trends and even print out daily, weekly or monthly which is an easy way to show data when the grade level teams meet every other week. The trainer will also research and deliver the features related to the apps that will be presented. One app in particular that will be presented will be The Opposites (Mindshapes Limited 2012). This app has levels so the teacher can see how each student is doing, a good way to track the students progress every time they use the app.
8

Final Project This training is sequenced so that the teachers may have an opportunity to try the websites and apps. The reason is to find out how much the teachers know about technology, how often they use it and do they apply it to their lessons? Next the teachers will be shown the school website that was designed and how each teacher has their own web page. The features on the sites will be shown so that they may use the site to the maximum potential that it was indented for. To relay to the parents and students what is being done in each classroom. Next is to present the resources to the teachers so that they may see how they can be used in lessons and units. It will be the presenters job to show all the features that each website and app has to offer. Then the teachers will be given time to set amount of time to try each site and app. Teachers may work in grade level teams or individually. Teachers will be asked back with a short assignment of how the resources will be implemented into their lessons. Teachers will be actively engaged through their own personal electronic devices. Teachers will be asked to bring in either a laptop, tablet or simply use their smart phones. It has been discussed that there will be 12 new laptops that will be available for this training. The participants will have the opportunity to practice either in the cafeteria or back in their classrooms. Some may want to download some software to their district issued computers. Assessments During the assessment phase, there will be blank lesson plans passed out to the teachers. They may work in grade level groups or individually and return the lesson filled out. Feedback will be from the teachers or groups on their exploration of the websites or apps. Finally the summative assessment will be the staff presenting what they may have found during their exploration of the resources to the rest of the staff. The goal is to have each teacher

Final Project implement the new resources in their lesson plans. This assessment will be done from the principal by collecting the lesson plans on a weekly basis. Media Specs What technology-hardware and software is needed? As stated earlier, a working laptop will be provided from the school, it is old so presenter will bring their own personal laptop. Presenter will also bring IPad with connecting cable to projector. There is a cart with projector, DVD player and speaker on it that will need to be available for presentation. There is a software application such as Quandary 2 that will need to be downloaded for middle school staff (Arneil & Holmes, 2003). Quandary is an application that allows you to set up questions and the students will have to navigate through the questions. The teachers will be given an article How teachers use technology: the latest research (Hertz 2013). This article will show how the instructional gap is closing by using technology. The article quickly touches 56% of low income schools have issues with accessing technology. It also says that in modern day, teachers have to stay current and ahead of the students since technology can be accessed from almost any phone. Technology is constantly evolving and teachers will need to have current training on new resources. Will you require photo, audio, and video assets? For this presentation there is a cart that has a projector, speaker and all the wires necessary for this presentation. The presenter also has a laptop that will be available for this presentation. There will also need to be screen which is located in the cafeteria that will need to be lowered. The computer lab which is located on the second floor will be available for teachers who want to work in grade level groups to use.

10

Final Project What type of interactivity will be used? The staff will be using their own personal electronic devices such as laptops, IPads, smart phones and tablets for this presentation. The presentation will be interactive in the sense that the teachers will be using their electronic devices to travel to each website displayed. From an article written by Jonathan Wylie he states students are more engaged and motivated to learn when they use mobile devices, and research shows that academic performances can improve. This article tells how students are more engaged when using their electronic devices. The article goes on to say that other countries are allowing students to bring in their smart phones to use during class. There are websites Poll Everywhere and Text the Mob being used much like the one that will be introduced to the teachers in this presentation that allows teachers to set up questions for the students to answer using their devices. Teacher will be asked to create a twitter account so that they can begin to see all the great resources available through the social media (Dorsey 2006). Instructor will navigate the staff through the process and give them a list of companies, blogger and teachers to follow. Development A power point presentation will be used for this training purpose. The power point presentation will be printed out for teachers to use as a guide during the training. Implementation When and where? The training will be on Wednesday, August 21st, 2013 in the cafeteria from 1PM to 4PM.

11

Final Project Who will deliver the training? Victor Rivera will deliver the training for the staff on integrating technology into the classroom. Do the trainers need training? The trainer does not need training. However the training will review each website and app prior to the training. The trainer will need to know all the features that each website and app has to offer. What is needed for the learners environment? The cafeteria will be set up like a classroom. The tables will be set up in rows with at least 2 feet clearance so that the instructor may pass to see how the staff is doing. There will be no more than 3 staff per table; teachers may sit in grade level groups. The teachers will be emailed before the school year to bring in their personal electronic devices. The computer lab will also be set up and running before the school year. A work order has been put in for August 14th which gives the instructor one week to check to see if they are all in working order. Evaluation Describe the level 1 and level 2 summative assessments Level 1: Reaction: For the training an email survey will be sent out to fill out the survey on line. It will be a way for me to see if the staff liked or disliked the training. A good strategy for level 1 evaluation is to determine learners' initial responses to the experience as they exit the training (Hodell, 2011).

12

Final Project Level 2: Learning: This evaluation will be done through the teachers web pages. I'd like to see the teachers create their Classroom DoJo's. This will show if they understood the training on this particular website and if they can implement it into their everyday lessons.
