July 2013

The Parish Pump was started in 1979 to provide a free community magazine in the parish. It began as, and still is, a joint venture, combining the church magazine and village magazine. The Parish Pump is sponsored by the Parochial Church Council and Debden Parish Council. Both bodies contribute financially to the cost of running the magazine by means of a donation, received annually. It is intended that the magazine reflects all aspects of village life within the parish and provides an opportunity for community matters to be raised. In addition to the information recorded in the magazine, our sister publication, the Debden Directory provides a host of useful contact numbers for services ranging from bus times, local plumbers, doctors and restaurants. If you do not have a copy, please contact a member of the committee. The magazine has editors but no official reporters. Consequently, an interesting magazine depends on articles, news, etc. coming from people in the village. The th closing date for submitting material is: the 12 of each month. The editors job is to edit. This means fitting the material into the space available and trying to ensure there is a reasonable balance of views on controversial subjects etc. Consequently, it is not always possible to publish everything submitted and sometimes changes have to be made to the length of a contribution. Non topical articles cannot always be published in the next issue but will appear later unless you are told otherwise. Contributions of up to 400 words have a better chance of being published in full than longer ones. Please note that the present and past editions of the Parish Pump are now available on line on the new website www.debden.org and that any material submitted will be automatically featured on the website. If you wish to have your name and/or contact details (which must normally accompany any contributions) withheld from the printed edition and/or not to appear on the website, this must be stated at the time of submission. Copy for inclusion in the next edition should be emailed by the 12th of the month to;

E DITORIAL
At the time of writing Affinity Water is busy replacing the old iron water mains with new plastic pipes; if it leads to fewer water leaks, it will be wonderful. During the process we have been warned that our water supply may be interrupted. Were so used to turning on the tap and expecting a fresh burst of water that its been a bit of a nuisance when the supply is turned off and we have had to think about storage of water for both domestic use and drinking. Of course water is a utility for which we pay and so, quite rightly, we expect to have a reliable service. However, improvements are essential so while the work goes on, I find I have to keep telling myself that I mustnt grumble. There are still quite a few people living in Debden who remember having to get their daily water from the village pumps. Would we cope with that nowadays? Actually in Debden we would because of our sense of community spirit. Look on pages 5 and 35 to read about those who have worked tirelessly for the Royal British Legion. Theres the news that the New Village Hall Group are planning to use local firms and volunteers to achieve their goal. The shop continues with the help of many volunteers; the volunteer management committee of the Pre- School work tirelessly to ensure its success. People are busy organising a Barn Dance to raise funds for the Village Hall; a festival of Sails is planned in the church to raise money for the upkeep of that lovely building and to ensure that we have a building for the rites of passage. As all this goes on, we find we are on the short list for the Best Village competition. I know the judges will look at the absence of litter, the state of footpaths, ponds, trees, churchyard as well as community spirit. I read that last year in Lincolnshire 80 judges travelled hundreds of miles around the county giving over 900 volunteer hours; I dont know how many judges there are for Essex but I am sure that if you added all the hours that Debdenites give each year it would be lot more. I think that the category for community spirit should be worth twice the number of marks than the other sections; if we dont win perhaps we should campaign for a change in the mark system and if we do win, I believe that the community spirit will have played a vital part.

NEWS New Village Hall

Were pulling it all together says 18-strong building group

A new village hall for Debden has moved closer with the establishment of an 18-strong steering group representing the local community and with the range of skills required to oversee this ambitious building project.
Debden New Village Hall Group was formally recognised by Debden Parish Council at its meeting on June 5 when it was agreed to set up a meeting between the group, the council and the village hall trustees to consider the latest plan. The new group is proposing a new-build structure larger than the existing hall and incorporating the village shop, a badminton court and sports changing facilities. A major difference to previous proposals is that to reduce costs the hall would be built using largely local contractors and volunteers. A controversial aspect is the proposal to locate the new hall on the site of the existing sports pavilion, which would be demolished and the facility transferred to a self-contained pavilion within the new building. The group recognises this will be opposed by some people in the village but argues that it is the most logical site, enabling the existing hall to continue to be used during construction and opening up the whole site to create a village centre. The parish council, the trustees, the village shop and user groups including the football club have been party to the discussions to date. Public meeting Following the meeting between the group, the council and the trustees where key issues will be resolved, a public meeting will be held on Wednesday July 24th at 8pm in the Village Hall to report progress to the community. The group hopes that every household and organisation in the village will be represented at this meeting to hear the plans and to ask questions. Stewart Luck, project manager for the New Village Hall Group, told the Pump: Its been a long time coming but I honestly believe that we are now very close to getting agreement on a new village hall that is affordable and meets the needs not just of the present community but future generations. It is inevitable that some aspects of our plans, including how it is going to be funded and how we can best accommodate the needs of all the users, may be controversial but if we all approach this with the best interests of the wider community at heart, it will be an outstanding success and a permanent reminder of what a community can do when it pulls together. 4

Flashing speed limit sign approved

Checks carried out by Essex Highways have confirmed that the speed of vehicles travelling through Debden is sufficiently high to justify a 30 mph flashing sign. Following concerns expressed by Debden Speed Watch to the Parish Council, speed checks were carried out by Highways in Thaxted Road near Rook End Lane and between Ivy Todd Hill and the High Street. Cables across the road measured speed and vehicle type. To justify a flashing sign, the mean speed has to be 35 mph. The Rook End Lane site met the criterion but not Ivy Todd Hill. This was a surprise because we catch far more drivers speeding coming up the hill, said Mike Fairchild, Speed Watch co-ordinator. Highways will provide the sign but an installation date has not yet been given.

Festival of Sails
During the weekend of 13th and 14th July, there will be a wonderful opportunity for residents to learn abut the history of Thames Sailing Barges and their importance for the Thames Estuary. The exhibition will give a brief history of the genre, details of barges, crews, destinations and cargoes. In addition, the Ordnance Survey Map of 1850 showing the positions of the four windmills in Debden will be on display along with more information about post mills. A major feature of the Festival of Sails will be information on the life and career of Thomas Cavendish. A Suffolk man, born at Trimley St Martin, near Ipswich, Cavendish was a descendant of the Dukes of Devonshire. Inspired by Francis Drakes circumnavigation of the world, Cavendish was the first man deliberately to set sail around the world and in the process raid Spanish towns and ships. His exploring and privateering made him very rich. A model of his ship, Desire, will be on display. Cavendish set off on his first trip in 1586 and pages from Debden Church Register relating to the births, marriages and deaths from that year will be on display. Refreshments will be available throughout the day as well as games and activities for the children.

Then there were just the four of them

Just the two of Us packed The Plough for a revival of tunes from the 60s and 70s that most of those present remembered well enough to join in. Local farmer John Hare (keyboard and occasional vocalist) and Nick Bennett (vocals), are former members of the Raveons. That band entertained for more than 40 years in venues around Saffron Walden and at US airforce bases. The four of them. John Hare (keyboard) pictured with Nick Bennett and (left) Victoria Gant and Katherine Hare. As Just the Two of Us they brought back some great memories. But before the night was out, Just the Two of Us became the four of them when John and Nick were joined by Johns daughter, Katherine and her new husband James sister, Victoria, for a selection of hits including by Abba. A great night was rounded off by a beautiful interpretation of Killing me Softly by Katherine, accompanied by her dad. Nostalgia was also in the air five days earlier when historic aircraft from the American Eagles Squadron flew over their old bases in East Anglia, including Debden, to commemorate their service during WW2. The flight included a Hawker Hurricane X, a Spitfire Mk1, a Thunderbolt, a Mustang and the Flying Fortress Sally B. In our picture, three of the fighters are making a low pass over the former RAF Debden and, appropriately, over John Hares farm. In the Sixties, the Raveons were voted top band by local US airbases, then manned by successors to the WW2 Eagles. 8

NEWS
Salvaged Dornier was heading for Debden
The German Dornier 17 bomber just salvaged from the Goodwin Sands was heading for Fighter Command bases at Debden and Hornchurch when it was shot down in 1940. In an attempt to wipe out RAF Fighter Command, Hermann Goering ordered continuous bombing raids on airfields in the southeast. The Dornier was part of a raid on August 26 by 150 German aircraft including 40 bombers escorted by Messerschmitt 109s and 110s. According to Patrick Bishop, author of Wings: the RAF at War 1912-2012, writing in the Sunday Times, most of the aircraft headed for Biggin Hill and Kenley but the Dorniers peeled off for RAF Debden and the base at Hornchurch. After losing its bearings, the recently-salvaged Dornier was shot down by an RAF fighter appropriately from Hornchurch and belly-flopped and cartwheeled on the Goodwins. Two crewmembers died but two survived including the pilot, Feldwebel (Sgt) Willi Effmert, who was taken prisoner. Picture: the Dornier before it was brought to the surface.

Dear Friends, Maybe I am just old-fashioned, but having, like many of you I am sure, been made to write lengthy letters to grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends in the few days after Christmas and birthday, now I have come of age I do rather enjoy receiving thank you notes. I am heartened to know that something I have done or given has been appreciated and I feel saddened that hand written thank you letters are on the decline an email or text message is not quite the same! So, here in print, is a heartfelt thank you to Bobby and Virginia Chapman for all they have done for Debden Church and the village, during more than 40 years. Bobby has served as Churchwarden and was an invaluable source of support and advice during the building of the New Room in 2000. Virginia has served on the PCC, been chair of governors at the Church school, arranged flowers, provided cakes and quiches and much more. Both have quietly and behind the scenes been so very generous with their time and energy, ensuring that Debden Church has remained a place filled with life where God can be worshipped and glorified by all who enter its doors. Bobby and Virginia, thank you from us all: we wish you many blessings and great happiness in your new home. While we are on the subject, I wonder if sometimes we neglect to thank God for his goodness and his many gifts. Just as thanking someone brings us closer to him or her so thanking God helps us draw closer to him. There is so much for which we can thank him the beauty of the created world, our families and friends, our children, those who support us, those who care for us when we are ill or in need the list is endless. Please let us remember to thank him.
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you most humble and hearty thanks for all your goodness and loving kindness. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And give us, we pray, such a sense of all your mercies that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (adapted from The Book of Common Prayer)

God bless you all, Hilary

F ROM THE SCHOOL

Dear Pump Reader, Year 6 children took part in a two day National Standards Bikeability course in May. You may have seen them out and about in the village undergoing their training with their instructors. They all achieved their level 2 in Bikeability. Well done everyone! Lunchtimes are a really important part of the school day. Children Bikeability can choose to bring a packed lunch or to have one of our school lunches. We are fortunate to have an excellent cook, Mrs Gray, and catering assistant, Mrs Johns, who prepare and serve around 80 school dinners each day.

News from the Shop

As many customers and staff will be aware, we have had to make do with an inadequate electric heater for some months. The air conditioning system, which was installed in 2006, broke down earlier this year and was deemed irreparable. We are therefore very grateful to the Searle Trust for providing a Grant to enable us to replace the Heat Pump, on the roof, and heat exchanger inside the Shop. Installation will take place during the first week of July, in time for us to have fully functioning air conditioning when the long expected heat wave arrives! Our vegetable supplier has been providing some very delicious asparagus, amongst other lines, and we hope to see an increased amount of vegetables as the Summer progresses. However, due to the lack of support for Dorringtons bread on a Saturday morning, the Shop Committee has decided to cancel the order from the 1st July. When you next visit the Shop, spare some time to investigate our stock of stationery. You will find a bigger and better supply of very reasonably priced wrapping paper among other things. Also, on the top of the shelving you will find a selection of unique bags and other attractive items, all of which have been locally produced. They make excellent presents, or a treat for yourselves! Our Day Out

In the cold, bleak days of early February, the idea of a barge trip down the River Orwell in May was a light to keep us going. However, spring never came and Tuesday May 21st dawned with the usual cold wind and grey skies; at least it wasnt raining. We all gathered by the Shop and left promptly at 9 am no room for malingerers - enjoying a pleasant coach journey to Ipswich. The Thames Barge, Thistle, was waiting for us at the quay and, fortified with coffee, we donned a few more layers of clothes and went on board. Soon we were motoring through the lock and onto the river. Once under the Orwell Bridge, the sails were put up and we felt the surge of the boat as it cut through the water. We passed Shotley and Woolverstone Marinas, Pin Mill, and Suffolk Yacht Harbour. As we approached the port of Felixstowe, we were amazed by the size of the container ships.
Bridge over windy water. Passing under the Orwell Bridge

Debden residents are a hardy lot and nearly everyone stayed on deck; the really brave souls stood at the bow whilst others huddled around the wheel house towards the stern or managed to find seating slightly out of the wind. Lunch was wonderful; a hearty Ploughmans with salads and then hot fruit crumble with lashings of cream followed by coffee or tea or perhaps a tot of rum! The return trip was under power as there was a head wind. We arrived back at Ipswich cold but having thoroughly enjoyed the day; it had been a chance to catch up with other villagers and to just relax. Many thanks must go to Mica for organising a great day. Batten down the hatches! 22

News from Debden Pentecostal Church

Dear Friends, For many years we have had connections with Carol Seymour and Ginny Perkins who are missionaries working in the southern area of the Congo. They have been undertaking a diverse range of ministries which include reaching people in remote areas (often travelling on dilapidated roads and over precarious bridges), radio and television broadcasts, and ministry to prisoners. The conditions in these prisons are very dire and the prisoners even have to rely on friends and relatives to bring in food. Earlier this year the security situation in the area where they were working deteriorated very rapidly . We prayed and listened with bated breath for news as our friends had to flee the country and cross the border by foot into Zambia. We are very much looking forward to a visit from Carol and Ginny later in the month to hear both about their adventures and how God is working miraculously in peoples lives in Congo. Finally, an advance notice that we are expecting another visit from Yan Hadley on the evening of 18th August.

God bless, Simon Gale

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION AWARDS FOR DEBDEN

Two members of Debden Branch Royal British Legion have just been awarded prestigious Essex County Legion Certificates of Appreciation. The Certificates were presented to the recently elected Branch President, Mr Mike Barton, and to the Branch Secretary, Mrs Chris Griffin, by the President of Essex County RBL, Brigadier (Retd) Malcolm Ratcliffe DL. Mike Barton has lived in Debden since 1971 with his wife Sue and has two daughters who were educated in local schools. He joined the Debden Branch RBL in 1990 and has held the posts of Vice Chairman and Chairman. Mrs Chris Griffin joined the Branch in 1995, following in the footsteps of her father, an ex-Chairman. She has served with dedication and efficiency as Secretary and Treasurer since joining. The Branch Chairman, Colonel (Retd) Roger Burgess, praised the recipients and endorsed the awards, saying that they were thoroughly welldeserved and were a fitting tribute to their enthusiasm, hard work and support over a sustained period.
