Graduates follow siblings to college
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Haddonfield Sun
Haddonfield Memorial High
School graduated its senior class
of 2013 on Thursday, June 20.
Brooke Harrer, Stephen Noll,
John Canuso, Rachel Cipolla,
Fritz and Abby Finkenauer,
Justin Kamerling, Nathan Mc-
Mullen, Adam Augugliaro, Emily
Carson, Kate Gallo, Sylvia
Strauss, Samantha Verzella and
Eric Galvin are among those grad-
uates. This group of 14 seniors
will follow in the footsteps of
older siblings, becoming gradu-
ates of HMHS and attending the
same college.
Strauss, who is following her
sister Ella, said she might have at-
tended Davidson College even if
her sister did not attend.
I always thought the school
was a better fit for me. Having an
older sister there didnt deter me
from going there, Strauss said,
adding her sister has one more
year until she graduates.
Strauss, similar to many
prospective college students, ap-
plied to more than four schools
and waited for the acceptance let-
ters before making a final deci-
sion. Galvin, who is attending the
same school as his sister Adri-
enne, said he applied to nine
schools, but Villanova was the
school for him.

Black and red filled the seats on Haddonfield Memorial High School Stadium Field as the Class of 2013 anticipated flipping their tassels from
left to right and tossing their hats in the air. They eagerly waited to step off of the field and toward their next journey in life. Students, facul-
ty, family and friends gathered on stadium grounds to celebrate on Thursday, June 20. please see SOME, page 5

Early this week plumbers, Joe & Craig, were kept busy working
long days at the Mt. laurel Cracker Barrel and did a complete
kitchen redo in two days.
Greg had a week of repairs from leaking ice makers, to kitchen
sinks making noise when the toilet is flushed, replacing leaking
cast iron pipes in basements, and finding the toy little Michael
put down the second floor toilet in Haddon Heights.
Andy worked with a new customer to see if her sewer needed to
be dug up and replaced as recommended by others. By doing a
video inspection of her main drain Andy was able to suggest our
maintenance program and saved our customer money.

Some graduates
to attend their
siblings colleges
She constantly talked it up,
Galvin said. She made Villanova
sound like the perfect place for me
to be. Similar to Galvins outlook
on attending the same school as
his sibling, twins Fritz and Abby
Finkenauer are going to be with
their sister Anna. They fell in love
with the atmosphere in Vermont.
Abby and Fritz go to Vermont
once or twice a year for skiing
trips. When their sister started at-
tending the university, the school
immediately popped up on their
radar.
I really love the state. When
my sister started going to college
up there, all of the stories she told
me were exactly what I wanted
out of the college experience,
Abby said. I first visited the cam-
pus when my sister went on tour a
few years ago, and I fell in love
with the school, Fritz said. Al-
though the twins hadnt heard of
the university before, Fritz want-
ed to stay in the New England
area while Abby was looking for a
similar college atmosphere.
I dont think I would have
looked into that school if she did-
nt go there, Abby said, adding
she applied to 11 schools, toured
five and loved the University of
Colorado Boulder.
But the schools location would
have made it difficult to travel
back home.
When I saw Vermont it was a
mini version of Boulder. It was so
much more convenient, she said.

Parents appreciate support
for Odyssey of the Mind team
We would like to express our deep grati-
tude for the support the town has extended
to the Central School Odyssey of the Mind
team that participated in the Odyssey of
the Mind World Finals in May. The team
has had an amazing experience!
The Odyssey of the Mind organization
teaches students to learn creative problem-
solving methods in project teams. The team
solutions are judged on mechanical design,
technical performance, structure and the
performing arts. There is also a sponta-
neous exercise that comprises one-third of
the final score, in which team members
must work together to spontaneously solve
verbal or construction challenges.
Central School had several teams that
participated in the regional and state level
competition. One of the teams placed sec-
ond in the state competition and thus was
able to go to the World Finals at Michigan
State University, and join 825 teams from 25
countries in competition. This is the first
time that Haddonfield has had an elemen-
tary team advance to compete at the world
level. The Central School team placed 21st
out of 64 in its division. The group interact-
ed with teams from all over the world, and
had a week of brain-stretching activities
and events. The Central School world final-
ist team designed a solution to the problem
ARTchitecture: The Musical.For this
problem, the children wrote and performed
an original musical comedy that included a
replica of an architectural structure that
was built between 1,000 AD and 1,600 AD.
The team was comprised of fifth graders
Matt Eyles and Lillian Leimkuhler, fourth
graders Danny Cavanna and Jesse Eible
Hargro, and third graders Jack Eyles,
Chase Ricci and T.J. Smith. Parent volun-
teers Mark Cavanna and Tracey Ricci
served as coaches, and Cydnee Perman was
the advisor. Wed like to express our sincere
thanks to the Haddonfield community and
beyond for your support of these kids in
this special experience.
The team was able to quickly raise the
necessary funds, thanks to your generosity.
All of our families have been changed and
energized in new and exciting ways as a re-
sult of the opportunity. We look forward to
seeing the Odyssey of the Mind program
continue to grow in Haddonfield at the ele-
mentary level.

oes smart beget smart? What
defines the word smart?
And where is the cutoff be-
tween smart and not-so-smart?
The state Department of Education
is contemplating requiring prospec-
tive teachers to be smarter or at least
to perform better in their own school-
ing before they can receive certifica-
tion to lead a classroom in New Jersey.
And why not? Smarter, harder-work-
ing teachers should, in theory, result
in smarter, harder-working students.
It makes sense.
But will it make a difference?
Currently, the DOE requires teach-
ers to achieve a grade-point average of
2.75 in college to receive certification
to teach in the state. The department
is now considering raising that re-
quirement to a 3.0, or a B-average.
Symbolically, it is the right move. C-
students are labeled as average.
Dont we want the men and women
who teach our children to be above
that level? Of course we do. Our teach-
ers should perform higher in their
own schooling than the average stu-
dent. The future of our kids education
is in their hands, after all.
Pennsylvania and Delaware already
require this 3.0-average standard, so
why should New Jersey be any differ-
ent?
In practice, though, how much of a
difference will 0.25 points on a GPA re-
ally make? Will the DOE really attract
smarter, harder-working teachers?
Or, conversely, will it be turning
away quality prospective teachers at a
time when it is looking for more?
Its hard to imagine why the DOE
would spend its time debating what
seems like such a minor procedural
change, especially since its likely that
most New Jersey school districts al-
ready require their teaches to perform
above the average before they are
hired.
If the DOE feels upping the required
GPA would make a difference, then
make the change. But its not an issue
that warrants much debate. Just im-
plement the change, and move on to
bigger and more pressing matters.
Raising the bar? Just do it
DOE should implement higher GPA standards for prospective teachers
Your thoughts
What should the Department of
Education require of our prospective
teachers? Is a GPA minimum the right
measuring stick? Or is there something
else that would work better? Share your
thoughts through a letter to the editor.
was in Gallos sites before her sis-
ter, Sarah, decided to attend the
college.
Having my sister there was a
concern at first, but after
taking the entire month of April
to decide between Gettysburg
and Richmond, I knew that I need-
ed to take my sister out of
the deciding equation. I chose
this school for me, not because of
her, she said, adding her sister
has another three years left in
school.
Verzella did not expect to at-
tend the same college as her sister,
Katie. I never thought I would
end up at Clemson. I visited a lot
because we went to a lot of foot-
ball games. And then it kind of
clicked. It wasnt Oh, I wanted to
go to the same school as my sister.
It was more like This is where I
belong, Verzella said.
Verzella, Strauss, Galvin, Fritz
and Abby and Gallo said HMHS
sent them off well prepared and
ready to take on a world outside of
high school.
I am so pumped to get out of
here and see what the world has to
offer, Abby said.

Police academy commissions
92 civilian police recruits
The Freeholder Board commis-
sioned 92 civilian police recruits
into the Camden County College
Police Academy. These new offi-
cers signal the continued buildup
of the Countys regional law en-
forcement organization formed
to bolster public safety in Cam-
den County. These men and
women will start the academy on
July 22 and will hit the streets of
Camden after six months of
training.
Freeholder Director Louis
Cappelli cited the new officers as
critical to building the depart-
ment.
This is the final step in com-
pleting our staffing goal of 401
sworn officers in the division,
Cappelli said. These officers will
play a critical role in our cam-
paign to reclaim many more
Camden neighborhoods from the
criminal element and return
them to their rightful owners, the
residents of Camden City.
Out of approximately 2,500 ap-
plicants, these 92 officers will be
moving forward to start a rigor-
ous training schedule at the Cam-
den County College Police Acade-
my.
The officers will work for six
months training and learning
policing tactics and methods,
and, after their graduation, will
start two weeks of agency train-
ing and an eight week field train-
ing program in the Metro Divi-
sion within Camden City.
Once those requirements are
met they will be assigned to the
neighborhood they trained in to
police the sidewalks and streets.
Upon deployment they will con-
tinue to engross themselves into
their new communities develop-
ing relationships and providing a
guardian-like presence within
their assigned section of the city.
Chief Scott Thomson ex-
plained that the many of the
civilians being commissioned
into the academy bring a wealth
of knowledge and diverse back-
grounds to the department.
Mayor Dana Redd compliment-
ed the community outreach
being done by the Metro Division
in pinpointed neighborhoods
throughout the city, including the
Parkside and Fairview sections
of the city. Camden City Council
President Frank Moran said the
increasing numbers of officers
are visible on the streets.
When you drive around the
city, it is clear to me that there
are more officers on the streets
working on behalf of our resi-
dents, Moran said.
