1. Define radio and related media in the field of communication in the digital age (convergence, niching, synergy) 2. Enumerate the aural platforms (terrestrial radio, online radio, CDs, mobile phone, podcasting, etc.) 3. Describe the characteristics of radio and related media (portable, intimate, etc.). 4. Compare radio and related media with other forms of media (consumption and production).

We are living in the Digital Age. Digital industry creates a knowledge-based society surrounded by a high-tech global economy

Influences the manufacturing sector to come up with more efficient, convenient and innovative measures in the field of communication/mass communication

The radio industry adopted DIGITAL RADIO in the 1990s

Translates audio signals into electric pulses Offers superior sound fidelity

Translates audio signals into a binary format Offers superior sound clarity

Digital Broadcasting
Digital broadcasting produces clearer sound, digital signals are less likely to be damaged by interference from other stations Digital broadcast technology allows broadcasters to transmit more information than they can with analog signals

Convergence
Merging of mass communication outlets (print, radio, television, the internet, etc) along with portable and interactive technologies through various digital media platforms Allows media practitioners to tell stories and present information and entertainment using a variety of media

Niching
Specialization of information/entertainment dissemination as to create a dedicated audience base

Synergy
Two or more elements working together to create something that is bigger or greater than the sum of their individual efforts

The term aural pertains to that which is perceived through the auditory faculty The term platform is defined as a means or opportunity for public expression
