The purpose of this paper is to analyse the American presidency, together with the famous people who were

elected and changed the world so dramatically. I have chosen this theme mainly because I have always been interested in American politics and especially American history. The paper is devided intro four chapters. In my first chapter I focused on the White House, the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States. - It has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800.

In my second chapter I focused on the main differences between democrats and republicans. Its a matter of choice,really but in the end, I drew a conclusion in my paper.

Republicans= Individual responsibility Democrats=Community responsiblity

on the other hand

Republicans believe in individual rights and liberties. Democrats believe in community and social justice. This graphic below shows which party controlled the White House since 1901. As we can see,the Democratic Party has a clear advantage at the moment,but this could change at any moment.

Moving on the 3rd chapter deals with Mount Rushmore,the famous tourist attraction. - Mount Rushmore features 60-foot (18 m) sculptures of the heads of four United States presidents,probably the most known ones: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. -The entire memorial covers about 5 kilometers. - Sculpted by Danish-American Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum. - construction on the memorial began in 1927, and the presidents' faces were completed between 1934 and 1939. - Although the initial concept called for each president to be depicted from head to waist, lack of funding forced construction to end in late October 1941,because of the 2nd wolrd war.

Chapter 4 highlights remarkable presidents which had a great influence on the country and are meant to remain in the history. George Washington The Father of His Country - George Washington was the first President of the United States (17891797), the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. - He oversaw the creation of a strong, well-financed national government that maintained neutrality in the wars raging in Europe, suppressed rebellion, and won acceptance among Americans of all type - He is consistently ranked among the top three presidents of the United States, according to polls of both scholars and the general public. - He is also one of the best knowed historical figures of all history.

Thomas Jefferson A Consistent Opponent of Slavery -Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 (April 2, 1743 O.S.) July 4, 1826) was an American Founding Father, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the third President of the United States. - At the beginning of the American Revolution, he served in the Continental Congress, representing Virginia and then served as a wartime Governor of Virginia (17791781). Just after the war ended, from mid-1784 Jefferson served as a diplomat, stationed in Paris. In May 1785, he became the United States Minister to France. - Jefferson owned many slaves, he opposed the institution all his life and consequently treated and took care of them very well and expected them to work no more than free farmers - Though Jefferson has been criticized by many modern day scholars over the issue of slavery, he remains rated as one of the greatest U.S. presidents

Abraham Lincoln The Great Emancipator -Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 April 15, 1865) was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Lincoln led the United States through its greatest constitutional, military, and moral crisesthe American Civil Warpreserving the Union, abolishing slavery, strengthening the national government and modernizing the economy - Six days after the surrender of the Confederacy durng the civil war, Lincoln was assassinated by actor and Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln's death was the first assassination of a U.S. president and sent the nation into mourning. - Lincoln has been as well ranked both by scholars and the public as one of the greatest U.S. presidents.

Theodore Roosevelt The Youngest President -Theodore D. Roosevelt (October 27, 1858 January 6, 1919) was the 26th President of the United States (19011909). He is noted for his exuberant personality, range of interests and achievements, and his leadership of the Progressive Movement, as well as his "cowboy" persona and robust masculinity - Roosevelt was 42 years old when sworn in as President of the United States in 1901, when President William McKinley was assassinated making him the youngest president ever; he beat out the youngest elected president, John F. Kennedy, by only one year. Roosevelt was also the first of only three sitting presidents to have won the Nobel Peace Prize. - Roosevelt's policies were characterized by his slogan, "Speak softly and carry a big stick - On October 14, 1912, Roosevelt was campaigning in Milwaukee, Wisconsin when a local saloon-keeper shot him. The bullet lodged in his chest after passing through a jacket pocket containing his steel eyeglass case and a copy of his 50 page speech which had been folded in half. Being an anatomist, Roosevelt concluded that since he wasnt coughing blood the bullet had not penetrated the chest wall into his lung. He declined immediate treatment and gave his 90 minute speech with blood seeping from the wound into his shirt. Ladies and gentlemen, I dont know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot, Roosevelt said, but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose.

- He was 60 years old at the time of his death,but his energetic vision helped bring the nation into the new century and he is my personal favourite. Other influential presidents : Franklin D. Roosevelt The Only Person Who Was Elected President to Four Terms, John F. Kennedy An Optimistic Approach to a Nation Struggling Under

Recession, Richard Nixon The Only President to Resign, George W. Bush The Son of a Former President, Barrack Obama The First African American to Hold the Office.

As a conclusion although their mandates were in different periods, the reason I chose these particular presidents is because I find what they did for the world very significant. In my opinion, Thomas Jefferson, John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama had the greatest influence on the country. The first of them was a President in 1800, the second in 1961 and the latter is the current President of USA. Jeffersons Declaration of Independence represents, from my point of view, the most important American document which attests that every person has the right to life, freedom and the pursuit of happiness. The second president, Kennedy was a unique President: the first Catholic President, the only President to have won a literature prize, the second youngest President and the first President who has been born in the 20 th century. Moreover, everyone will remember his tragic death as a scar in Americas history. The last president I admire the most is Barack Obama who is the first African American President of USA. By electing him, America changed dramatically and ended the racial discrimination. Obama will always remain as the first black President from the White House.
