8.3: Trig Integrals

Remember the good ol Power Rule Use the following identities to transform into forms for which we can use Power Rule

8.3 : Guidelines for Evaluating Integrals Involving Sine and Cosine

1. Power of sine is odd*, save 1 sine (for du) and convert remainder to cosine. Then expand and integrate.

2.

Power of cosine is odd*, save 1 cosine (for the du) and convert remainder to sines. Then expand and integrate.

3.

Powers of both sine and cosine are even*, make repeated use of identities to convert integrand to odd powers of cosine.

*and positive

8.3 : Trig Integrals

If we evaluate the above as a definite integral from 0 to /2, note that the only term that contributes to the solution would be (3x)/8 thus, Walliss Formulas.

Integrals Involving Powers of Sine and Cosine

These formulas are also valid if cosn x is replaced by sinn x.

8.3 : Integrals Involving Powers of Secant and Tangent 2

Power of secant is even*, save 1sec factor (for du) and convert remainder to tangents

2.

Power of tangent is odd*, save 1 secant-tangent factor (for the du) and convert remainder to secants.

3.

If no secant factors and power of tangent is even*, convert a tan2 factor to a sec2 factor.

8.3: Integrals Involving Powers of Secant and Tangent

4. If the integral is of the form sec m xdx , where m is odd*, use integration by parts (as illustrated Example 5 of previous section). 5. If none of the 1st 4 guidelines apply, try converting to sines and cosines.

Example Power of Tangent Is Odd and Positive

Find Solution: Because you expect to use the Power Rule with u = sec
x, save a factor of (sec x tan x) to form du and convert the remaining tangent factors to secants.
