IV-CHASITY TLE ASSIGNMENT-Home Nurse

I was able to interview my Uncle Edwin Liwan who is a home nurse at Cardonald Care Home, Glasgow City Scotland, United Kingdom. He is actually the Brother of my Mother, and he is working there for almost 3 years. I interviewed him through Skype Online in the internet. And I have take note a lot of information about him especially her patient who is suffering from Mild Dementia.

He said that one of her patient is 92 years old lady who has a Mild Dementia and recently had a stroke. She suffered right sided paralysis and is now confined in bed. Her speech has been affected that she is not able to communicate very well, so it is important to listen carefully when she is talking, she can use sign language and non verbal cues to signal what she wants and how she feel although this is very difficult and can be challenging at times. Because of her age and the severity of damage that has been done by her recent stroke, the family have agreed to sign a DNRCPR form, or Do not resuscitate form which means that she is not to be resuscitated in any event no what matter what happened. This has been a very difficult family decision but the Doctor has agreed to them because there is a very slim chance of survival for her.

Also the condition of her patients room comprises a bed, cupboard, a side table and a toilet. It is being cleaned everyday twice a day by domestic staff. She has a buzzer in her room which she uses to alert the nurse when even she needs anything. However due to her dementia sometimes buzzes every 5 minutes for no reason and forget that she does it. She use a special bed which we call it a profiling bed with a airflow mattress, specially designed to minimize any development of pressure ulcers as she is confined in bed most of the time. The bed is electronic; it can be manipulated to be higher or lower and makes it easier for me to perform any work that i need to do to my patient such as changing her pad and giving her a bed bath without hurting my back. His relationship with her patient is very good. She respect and understand her and have duties to do in regards to her care and she cooperates well, and she can be sometimes difficult but that is again because of her Dementia and illness but this doesnt affect my relationship with her as her nurse.

Lastly I ask him if he loves his job and how he handles his work and he said. This job can be very challenging and would require patience and dedication. Its not always about the money, if u want to do this job; you should have passion on it, dedication and millions of patience.I therefore conclude that being a home nurse is hard, especially when you are working overseas. You need to work hard, have patience and dedication. Also you need to fight your homesickness and sacrifice everything.
