Green Technology and Sustainability of e-learning in Higher Education: (A case study of Systematic Support Mechanism in the United Kingdom)
This research will explore the benefit of implementing green technology and the sustainability of e-learning in higher education with respect to design of learning materials are environmentally friendly, and provides disposal strategy such as recycling and effective use of renewable energy sources. It was obvious that energy waste created lots of economic problems and has effect on resources and infrastructure available within the higher education sectors. The need for learning organisations to make good use of energy efficiency programmes and cost savings as ways of reinvesting on learners and staff as means of creating employment is necessary during global economic crises and recession. The green agenda supports the United Nations (UN), World Bank, UNDP, OECD indicators for good practice and involvement of users to recognise the importance of energy efficiency and cost saving in day to day operations. It is obvious that computers are responsible for the energy waste of most organisations, especially when left on overnight. The use of strategic models and energy management mechanism may assist organisations and act as means of energy monitoring and control devices, thereby providing platform for cost savings. The concept can be factored into organisations with high number of learners and staff and each having their own computers or desktop at work/ learning environment. The introduction of green technology will act as positive strategy and may result into hugh savings financially and in terms of reinvestment or reward on the learners and staff team. The effective use of energy management systems which comply with green technology requirements has become necessary in terms of efficient use of energy, cost savings and reduction of carbon footprint for sustainable environment. The return on investment (ROI) as computational finance model may restore organisations with hugh energy wastage without thinking of cost, environmental impact and carbon footprint/emissions. The carbon penalty may apply to those organisations without appropriate intervention mechanisms and policies to address reduction in carbon footprints, environmental impact including recycling, realisable energy models. The work ahead of researchers and practitioners remains how to make green technology sustainable for the purpose of achieving excellence in energy efficiency and usage, environmental consideration, energy re-use and virtual usability.

Prof. Ezendu Ariwa is a Senior Lecturer in Strategic Information Systems and Course Leader for Business Information Technology Management at the London Metropolitan University, London Metropolitan Business School . His specialisation is Strategic Information Systems, Facilities Management and E-Commerce and SMEs. He has proven track record as Visiting Professor in Management Sciences and Computer Science at the International Karakurum University, Gilgit and Visiting Professor in Management Information Systems at European School of Economics, London Campus, as well as Visiting Professor of the Islamic University of Technology, Bangladesh.Prof. He is the Editor-inChief of the International Journal of Green Computing and the Associate Editor of the International Journal of E-Politics and the Associate Editor of International Journal of Distributed Systems and Technologies (IJDST). He is also Assistant Editor and member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the International Journal of Leadership and Management Practice as well as the International Journal of Professional Management, Journal of Information Technology Review (JITR), International Journal of Applied Management and International Journal of Applied Human Resources Management.
