GENERAL INTRODUCTION
 CAT stands for Common Admission Test
 Conducted by IIMs
 About 250,000 students took CAT in 2008 for about

1500 seats in the IIMs
 Test is Multiple Choice based with negative
marking for wrong answers.
 Two Key Trends :

 Evolution from a speed-based test to an exam that

WHAT DOES CAT PERCENTILE MEAN ?
 Simply put, It is the percentage of Students below
you in a test.
 Student A wrote an exam which was written by a total of 10,000 students.
Suppose A stood 100th in the test - that is, there were 9900 students below
him in that test. 9900 as a percentage of 10,000 is 99. So, 99 per cent of the
students who wrote the test were below X.
 Essentially it gives your relative standing.
 CAT Percentage Score :

 If in a section the maximum possible marks is 50. The person scoring
highest has scored 40 and you have scored 30. Then your percentage score
is 30/40*100 = 75 %.

 Most of the Institutes don't explicitly declare the
Percentile Cutoffs for GD/PI Calls
 Presented below is a broad idea of the Cutoffs (CAT 2008) of Institutes

COMPUTER BASED TEST
 This is a linear test in which questions appear on

the screen one after the other in a predefined
sequence
 You might or might not have the option of jumping

across sections, within a section, modifying the
answers etc.
COMPUTER BASED TEST
 The fundamental difference between a CBT and a

CAT(Computer Adaptive Test like GRE/GMAT) is
that the toughness level of the question is
independent of the status of the previous answer.
 It is simply an “online” version of a paper based

test
COMPUTER ADAPTIVE TEST
 This is the pattern followed by the GMAT and the

GRE
 Questions are chosen in a random manner by a

special software
 The aim of the test is to locate the optimum

intelligence level of the test-taker
 The toughness level of the following question

depends on the status of the question currently
answered
 If the answer to Q. 1 is right, then Q. 2 is of a higher

difficulty level; otherwise it is of a lower difficulty
level.
 That means, it is not just the number of questions

that you answer, but the quality of questions that
you answer that determine your percentile position!
 One cannot proceed to the next question without

having marked the answer to the current one
 One cannot jump questions or sections nor return

to the previous questions
 Once an answer is confirmed, it cannot be changed
GENERAL POINTS
 Rough paper is given for scratch-work and has to
be submitted to the test invigilator before leaving
the room
 No calculators etc. are allowed
 The GRE allows a basic online calculator having the
4 basic operands (+, -, x, /), we are not sure whether
same will be allowed in CAT
 The keyboard is a standard one (QWERTY)
 The word processor is a very basic one without the

facility of “Spell-check” or “Grammar-check”
DIFFICULTIES FACED
 Scrolling and Reading from a computer screen
 Facing one question at a time – the uncertainty of

not knowing what the next question would be like
 (Possibly) compulsorily having to answer all

questions
ANY SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED
 NONE!
 The student is expected to be able to hold and

operate a mouse (point and click)
 Also, if need be, to type, using a simple QWERTY

keyboard
