CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION At Kyambogo University, as a routine for most academic programmes, undergraduate students undergo industrial training as part of their academic and professional development prior to graduate at the end of their respective courses. This is usually at service industries, manufacturing sites, research institutions, Hospitals, Schools, government departments and at any other such organization. Alternatively, this training can also be carried out at the university, itself, in which case it is called in House training. The author accordingly carried out his training at the University premises. 1.1 Background information on Kyambogo University Kyambogo University is a relatively new University created with the main aim of promoting and advancing knowledge and development of skills in Science, Technology and Education and such other fields having regards for quality, equity, progress and transformation of society. Kyambogo University (KYU) is Ugandas third public university established by the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 and the Universities and Other Tertiary institutions (Establishment of Kyambogo University) instruments of 2003. It is a merger of the former Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), the Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE).

1.1.1 History of the University

Although Kyambogo is a new university, it has a rich history that dates as far back as 1928. UPK started in 1928 as a small technical school on the Makerere Hill and was transferred to Kyambogo Hill in 1958 as Kampala Technical Institute. It was renamed Uganda Technical College and finally UPK.

ITEK started as a Government Teacher Training College in 1948 in Nyakasura, Fort Portal and transferred to Ruharo and then Ntare Hill all in Mbarara, western Uganda. It transformed into a National Teachers College and later ITEK as per the statue of parliament in 1989.

UNISE on the other hand started as a Department of Special Education at ITEK in 1988, and later became an autonomous institution by act of parliament in 1998.

1.1.2 Location

The University is located 8km from Kampala City Centre along the Kampala Jinja highway. It is accessible through the Banda Trading Centre or the Kyambogo T junction. There is also an access route through the Ntinda- Kiwatule road.

1.1.3 core functions The University`s core function is teaching and learning although consultancy and community services are other functions that it also carries out. The university offers innovative, relevant and market driven academic programmes, both at

undergraduate and postgraduate levels with inbuilt quality control systems. The university also provides an environment and policy framework for undertaking high quality and relevant research.

1.1.4 Vision To be a centre of Academic and Professional Excellence 1.1.5 Mission To advance and promote knowledge and development of skills in Science, Technology and Education, and in such other fields having regards for quality, equity, progress and transformation of society. 1.1.6 Motto Knowledge and skills for service 1.1.7 Core values In order for the university to realize its vision and mission, certain shared values are nurtured. The is University guided by the right values derived from the virtues and moral standards of the Uganda and wider society. These include the following core values:

Freedom of thought and expression. Innovativeness and creativity. Good corporate governance. Team spirit and teamwork. Professionalism. Quality customer service.

1.1.8 Organization structure The University is headed by the Chancellor, the titular head of the University, who presides over all ceremonial assemblies of the University and confers degrees, academic tittles and distinctions of the university. Above him is the visitor who performs the overall supervisory role over the affairs of the University. The vice chancellor is the Chief Executive officer in charge of administrative, academic and financial affairs of the university and chairman of Senate. Below him are other important officials whose roles are explained below. i. First deputy vice Chancellor-deputizes the Vice Chancellor and in that regard responsible for academic affairs of the University. ii. Second Deputy vice Chancellor-Deputizes the vice Chancellor and oversees the Finances and administration of the University. iii. University secretary In charge of general administration of the University, secretary to council and Accounting officer. iv. Academic registrar Chief coordinator of all matters pertaining to the academic affairs of the University including admissions, examinations, undergraduate studies, postgraduate studies, research and publications. v. vi. Dean of students responsible for the welfare and discipline of students. University librarian responsible for the development, control, management and coordination of all library matters and information of the university. vii. Bursar In charge of financial administration and planning of the University.

The Academic registrar`s Department comprises of Academic Units and Divisions. Academic units are where teaching takes place and are called Schools, Faculties or Institutes, headed by Deans or Directors. the Academic Registrar is represented by an Administrator in each of these units. The divisions under the Academic Registrars office execute various functions under that Office `s jurisdiction. These include the following; Admissions and records Division, The examination division, Extension and affiliated institutions Divisions, Senate, ceremonies and Staff Development division and The post graduate studies Division. 1.1.9 Major Sources of funds The university `s major sources of fund are the payments by private sponsored students for tuition and other functional fees, as well as government remittances in terms of contribution towards tuition fess and the well fare of Government sponsored students. The Government also independently contributes money towards improvement in service delivery at all the public Universities. In some other cases different companies and organizations usually extend help to the University in terms of research grants, logistical as well as financial support, as part of the their corporate social responsibility.

1.1.10 Future plans of the University. The University has in place a five year strategic plan curtailing the different things it plans to accomplishing in the short, medium and long term to achieve its vision of becoming a centre of Academics and professional excellence, which however , can`t be discussed here in details. Its available on the University website, www.kyu.ac.ug 1.1.2 Purpose and objectives of IT activities. Industrial training is a program that provides pre-professional experience with specific assignment and responsibilities. It provides work experience that is relevant to the academic and professional development of a student before graduation. It serves as a bridge between university and the world of work. It helps student make informed decisions and improve one `s marketability after graduation. Industrial training is a full course unit in almost all Kyambogo University programmes, and normally takes place during the recess term, lasting a period of ten weeks. The industrial training undertaken was to enable us to : Learn the way of industry and develop talent and attitudes necessary for an all round career while embracing responsibilities of a professional scientist. Have an increased appreciation of chemistry and its vast applications in society, appreciating that science and technology are expanding disciplines and that learning is a continuous process. Develop personality and communication skills for future roles in the scientific field and the society at large.

Learn how to find solutions for problems that occur at work places since these are seldom unique, and thus increase efficiency for future undertaking and, Develop a sense of responsibility towards society.

1.3 Overview of the IT activities The training was meant to cover projects, namely, Extraction and analysis of insecticides from orange and lemon peelings and Datura, Etraction and analysis of G nut oils
