Innovation at Incubator
Amity Innovation Incubator is an excellent place for students studying in Amity to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. We started our own venture in Incubator by submitting our business plans and we have been getting full support in terms of Mentorship, Guidance, Infrastructure Support and Business Development. The contacts and networking events were very helpful in getting us in touch with the people who could help us or with other business owners we could share our experiences with. The business advice we got on a regular basis helped us focus on the important tasks in front of us, and gave us invaluable feedback on our progress and our goals. But even more important than these was the support we got from the Amity Innovation Incubators management, who were always there to say a good word when we needed encouragement, and did everything in their power to help us on our way. Our batch started in 2008 at Amity University. We were not much aware about the corporate world. We gained insights into the actual market from our seniors and teachers. As we progressed through the days, we got curious about such market forces and started browsing the net although there was still much to be uncovered. Fascinated by our idea of personalized learning, Mr Divya Prakash, a sales and customer relations expert at Adobe, handling the clients at the Delhi office, also joined the team during 3rd year. In the month of March, the company Eduvative Technologies came into being. The word eduvative is an amalgamation of education and innovation with the aim of developing indigenous education solutions for educational institutions. The company adopted the motto of making its solutions available, adoptable and affordable (the 3A policy of Eduvative). The team also delivered two amazing industry projects and our University acknowledged both as the best projects.

Experience of a Lifetime
Crossing the Atlantic Ocean for the first time on 20th January, 2012, leaving my beloved country behind for the unknown, I had no idea what to expect from my four months in the United States. Looking back, I can safely say my semester in D.C. has exceeded my wildest expectations. Never have I ever learned, seen, laughed and grown so much in such a short period of time. It truly gave me a different perspective on things and allowed me to see the world in a broader sense of theres more to the world. In a short time, I have learned a lot about US foreign policy and

was fortunate to meet government bureaucrats, journalists and research scholars who enlightened me about the varied progress throughout. I found that my academic course called US 21st Century Foreign Policy was very informative having a unique blend of history, foreign policy and strategy. One of the most breathtaking experiences that I have ever had was to attend and speak at the United Nations General Assembly during the worlds largest Model UN conference NMUN held from 2nd to 7th April. My strategy is alienated into five categories that consist of academic development, professional development, civic engagement, leadership and personal growth. I personally came down here looking to garner the most knowledge in the world of International Politics and Foreign Policy which would help me groom as an individual and adapt a tenacity in handling and talking to new people of different ethnicities and public officials, as well as coping with the stressful schedule of a work week combined with academic seminars. I was able to amaze my boss with my hard work and dedication. Civically, I was able to increase my understanding of the misfortunes of American veterans, as I was a part of the civic engagement project for veterans. I have been a part of the lobbying group on Capitol Hill, trying to advocate a 2 state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Finally, my personal growth is where I feel I have made the most strides and without a doubt achieved my goal of being able to take on the real world with the stresses of class work and multiple activities. Being able to handle the long workweek schedule along with a night class, homework, civic engagement and providing for myself, I know I can make it in the real world. The little things that I didn't really consider to begin with, but made an impact on me while I was here is what really makes me know how far I've come while returning on 10thMay, 2012.

An attractive sweet flower with a lovely fragrance and soft, delicate petals can never be the outcome of just the plants hard work but every single element in its environment that has put in efforts during the growth of it.

A Message for Students by Ericsson

Dear friends, my success story at Amity is similar to that of the flower. The achiever in me has been created by every single member of the Amity family. And prominent among them is the contribution from my program leader, Mr. Praveen Kumar, for believing in me more than my own self and standing beside me at the time of every need and each and every faculty of Amity for having imparted their knowledge and experience to me in the best possible ways. Today, I am in the right words, a compilation of the knowledge, experience, hard work and love that Amity has in its surroundings and I promise to represent the same in the future with honour and dignity. And to all those juniors who are striving hard to perform well at Amity, I have just one small message. Whenever you face obstacles, whenever you feel that you are surrounded by troubles with situations going beyond control just remember:

I am delighted to have Aastha, Ankit, Inderjot, Parvartika, Ritika and Sahil Third Year students from Amity University, Computer Science & Engineering Department working as Interns for Ericsson Global Internal Sub Unit Project. Albeit in the nascent stage of learning Computer Science nuances, the manner the students have tried to plan, structure, innovate and implement our project on service delivery tracker tool after whetting the present day technologies and research into tools available shows up their synch with the new technologies in vogue and zeal for imbibing newer technologies. The way these students have taken up the challenge to work on the project independently speaks volumes of their positive attitude. Commitment, enthusiasm, resourcefulness and collaborative approach they have displayed while working on this project is indicative of the supportive environment of the Institution they are budding from and I am sanguine if they work like this they would make into excellent Computer Science engineers. I wish them all the best.

Semantic Interportability Framework

By Ms. Aruna Chhaba Sr. Consultant, NIC SI
The Industrial revolution had created industry hubs, and re-oriented human population, whereas IT revolution has converted those hubs into a global village, in which information services can be delivered through a single window, anywhere, anytime, in a format as desired by the customer. However, quality of such services depends upon the degree of interoperability among heterogeneous ICT systems spread across the globe for seamless exchange of information not only for information delivery, but also for efficient disasters management. Interoperability Frameworks of the countries focus on technical, organizational and semantic interoperability for this purpose. In the era of the Internet, problem of information overload has made semantic interoperability most complex, requiring intensive research to arrive at quick and simplified solutions. Internationally, initiatives have been already started to build Semantic Interoperability Frameworks (SIF), whose scope /purpose is to arrive at agreed approach for building capability of the organizations (Government, Private, Business, other sectors) to: a. discover information requirements for quality services delivery b. explicitly describe the meaning of data to be shared multilaterally with other organizations c. process received information in a manner consistent with its intended purpose

The scope of SIF further includes guiding principles for addressing issues associated with: a. Data accessibility, authentication, authorization, security, transparency, accountability and privacy that constrain semantic interoperability. b. Building of metadata and data standards for mapping schemas in databases, multiple ontologies for business conceptualization of data, taxonomy and lexicon etc. c. Interoperability Governance processes like mechanisms for formulation of polices, technical standards, best practices, enforcement and compliance and conflicts resolution etc. Present day technology tools available for this purpose need to be advanced to build repositories and set multilateral contextual relationship between them. The tools should be capable of triggering alerts for conflicts during inter/intra organizations data exchange. Further, appropriate H/W and S/W tools need to be built around the semantic Interoperability Framework to encourage concept of Open data management, in line with open technologies to avoid monopoly of organizations on common data, technology dependency, and vendor lock-in and cost overruns.

I have spent the best 4 years of my life at Amity. Faculties have really inspired and motivated me a lot. It is due to their mentoring that I am able to pursue a career of my dreams. Even the infrastructure of Amity is world class. Sports and fests at Amity are extravagant itself. I take great pride in saying that I am an AMITIAN. Ayush Goenka, B.Tech IT Batch of 2007-11 Currently Pursuing Masters of Quantitative Finance at Rutgers University, USA

The time I spent at Amity was some of the best years of my life. Amity gave me lifelong friendships, wonderful mentors and the confidence to make a mark when I stepped out into the world. I am pleased to say that everyone in my organization is really impressed with my fellow Amitians and me, because of our forthcoming personalities, confidence and dedication. Book review (Kane and Abel-Jeffery Archer)

Wladek Abel Rosnovski and William Kane were both born on the same day in 1906, but on completely different ends of the earth and side of the tracks. While William was born to a wealthy Boston family, Wladek was found in the woods near a castle in Poland, where he was raised by a poor family already saddled with nine mouths to feed. The story chronicles their lives growing up in an era of war, where William used to deal with the loss of his father in the Titanic and Wladek losses the only family he knows in World War 1. He became a prisoner of the Russians, but eventually escaped to Turkey where he was rescued and soon sent to America to start a new life. While William continued to grow in wealth, Abel worked his way up from being a simple waiter at the Plaza in New York City, to eventually being in charge of a hotel chain. The two men eventually met when Abel needed backing for his failing business and needed the help of William's bank. Unfortunately, things didnt go as planned and Abel soon blamed William for the loss of his mentor and friend, Leroy. This personal vendetta went on for years between the two men, who did all they can to bring each other down financially. But fate can play a cruel role, as it led these enemies to do good things for each other without even knowing about it. This type of book is good for mature readers, readers who are into suspense, drama, intrigue and romance. I especially liked the attention and detail paid to each character as we are taken into their lives. By the end of this story, you feel drawn to Abel or Kane, wanting each man to snap out of their stubbornness to see what is so obvious. Their lives are enriching and heart-breaking. I recommend this book because you will be unable to put it down. If you are looking for a book that talks about life in the early 1900s, to see how ruthless and cutthroat the business world is, and especially to see the impact of friendship and family, then this is the story for you.

Space Walk: Black Holes

Introduction The term black hole is of very recent origin. It was coined in 1969 by the American scientist John Wheeler. A star which is sufficiently massive and compact has a very strong gravitational field that not even light can escape from the surface of that star, is known as a black hole. A black hole, according to the general theory of relativity, is a region of space from which nothing, including light, can escape. It is the result of the deformation of space-time caused by a compact mass. Around a black hole there is an undetectable area which marks the point of no return, called an event horizon. It is called black because it absorbs all the light that hits it, reflecting nothing, just like a perfect black body in thermodynamics. Despite its invisible interior, a black hole can be observed through its interaction with other matter. A black hole can be inferred by tracking the movement of a group of stars that orbit a region in the space. Astronomers have identified numerous stellar black hole candidates, and have also found evidence of super massive black holes at the centre of galaxies. After observing the motion of nearby stars for 16 years, in 2008 astronomers found compelling evidences that a super massive black hole of more than 4 million solar masses is located near the Sagittarius A* region in the centre of the Milky Way galaxy. This additional heat also increases pressure of the gas until it is sufficient to balance the gravitational attraction, and the gas stops contracting. Stars remain stable like this for a really long time, with heat from nuclear reactions balancing the gravitational attraction. Then after few years, the star runs out of its hydrogen and other nuclear fuel. When a star runs out of fuel it starts to cool off and no enough energy left inside the star to withstand its strong gravitational attraction. So it starts contracting. This state is the final state of a star called white dwarf which has a radius of a few thousand miles and density of hundreds of tonnes per cubic inch. Owing to this extremely high density, the gravitational attraction of that star increases and it starts attracting everything lying closer to it and not even let the light to escape. This is called a Black Hole. The parts of black hole are horizon, singularity, photon sphere, ergo sphere. The methods of detecting black holes are through Gamma ray burst, gravitational Lansing, accretion of matter. Formation of the Black Hole To understand how a black hole might be formed, we first need to understand the life cycle of a star. A star is formed when a large amount of gas (mostly hydrogen) starts to collapse due to its gravitational attraction. As it contracts the atoms of the gas collide with each other more and more frequently at greater and greater speeds - the gas heats up. Eventually, the gas becomes so hot that when the hydrogen atoms collide they dont bounce back, instead they coalesce to form helium. The heat released in this reaction, which is like a controlled hydrogen bomb explosion, is what makes the star shines.

What if the Sun becomes a Black Hole? The Sun has no intention of doing any such thing. Only stars that weigh considerably more than the Sun end their lives as black holes. The Sun is going to stay roughly the way it is for another five billion years or so. Then it will go through a brief phase as a red giant star, during that time, it will expand to engulf the planets Mercury and Venus, and make life quite uncomfortable on Earth (Oceans will boiling, atmosphere will escape). And then, the Sun will end its life by becoming a boring white dwarf star. What if the Sun did become a black hole for some reason? The main effect is that it would get dark and cold around here. The Earth and the other planets would not get sucked into the black hole; they would keep on orbiting in exactly the same paths they follow right now. Why? Because the horizon of this black hole would be very small -- only about 3 kilometers -- and as we observed above, as long as you stay well outside the horizon, a black hole's gravity is no stronger than that of any other object of the same mass.

GEN-SHOCK
Revealed by a team of researchers led by "Shakeel Avadhany" (an undergraduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology) at Boston's Levant Power Corporation, the mechanical engineers managed to develop a system called "GenShock", which represents "a shock absorber that has the ability to partially power a vehicle driving through pothole-plagued locations. "(Pothole means hole or pit, here: pit on the road). The invention is installed on a car. "When hitting a small pothole in the road, hydraulic fluid spurts into a turbine, which afterwards starts rotating as fluid runs through it. In such a way the turbine powers a small electric generator". Electronics incorporated in the system make the ride of a car through bumps smoother. Application in Military: With improved fuel efficiency, the military cars will consume less fuel when driving through war zones. Besides, a smoother ride, it would be easier to handle the vehicles, making it possible for soldiers to drive them faster through areas. If used on a military "Humvee", the energy recuperated can be used to increase fuel efficiency by "3 to 10 percent," which corresponds to up to a "4 mile-pergallon" increase in fuel saving.

Colin Chapman (19281982) Automotive engineer, founder of Lotus Cars

The cooling mechanism of the car mainly consists of three most important parts the coolant, the radiator, the fan. Coolant is generally air, water+ethylene glycol solution or oil. The basic function of the coolant is to take the heat form, the cylinder head and deliver it to the radiator. The radiator is not literally a radiator as the name suggests; actually it is a convector. It is a bit confusing why a fan is used, as the air is coming to the radiator to take the heat away when the car is moving. The answer lies right there in the previous sentence the air is coming to the radiator only when the car is moving. This is the reason why a fan is used. If a fan is not used, the air around the radiator will get heated up and the cooling will not take place. Due to this the engine might cease. In an F-1 car, there are no fans for the radiators. This is the reason why the drivers do not start the engine more than 2 min before the race. I hope that after reading this section, you would have a fair idea about what a radiator is for.

Recession proof Mechanical engineering

The recession is a threat to everyone. Whether you are in a big business, an entrepreneur or an employee, it affects everyone. Mechanical engineering is one of the safest college majors in terms of salary and job security. The reason this major is recession-proof is because of all the categories that it fits into; the job possibilities are limitless.Mechanical engineers can get jobs in many different areas since the skills you learn as an undergraduate are transferable. Mechanical engineers can work on gas turbines to newspaper presses; the options are limitless. The job expectancy is expected to grow along with ever rising salaries. Mechanical engineering is a solid recession proof major that will not be phased out anytime soon. The skills that are learned at the undergraduate level are transferable into many fields and highly valuable. Priyash Nigam 5MAE1 (2010-14)

Keep it cool
Ever wondered where all the heat generated by the combustion inside the engine goes? Combustion which is the most important process of the IC engines is itself a villain. The temperature inside the cylinder head of an IC engine reaches as high as 4000 K during high performance. We all love to pull the throttle and listen to the lovely roar of the engine but it would not have been possible without one of the very important systems of the car The cooling mechanism. If the engine is not cooled properly then the piston expands considerably and the engine ceases and stops working.

Budding Talents
People generally have a perception, that engineers cannot be good musicians, and they are only meant to be working with tools and machines. But Parthajeet Gogoi , who is pursuing mechanical engineering has been proving this perception wrong ever since he grabbed his six string bass guitar This budding musician definitely knows how to make full use of the talent he has, he makes flawless movements of the fingers on the fret board of the guitar and produces enchanting music. For Parthajeet, its all started at the age of 11 at his school, Delhi Public School , Duliajan. He later took private bass guitar lessons at home and was tutored by some of the best musicians and artists of his hometown Dibrugarh and Duliajan. He was Guided by various professional musicians including the singer Monisha Bordoloi and his grandfather Hiren Gohain (a well-known composer/musician/ lyricist of Assam and also the tutor of Jitul Sonowal,an award winning Assamese singer who introduced the western trend in the Assamese music industry). Parthajeet has definitely made these eminent people proud. Personally for him, music, is the best healer next to time, its the best way to bring peace and a good option for relaxation. He plays the guitar not only to produce good music for others but mostly for his own personal satisfaction. He believes in giving his 100% to music, because music is what that ultimately brings a smile to his face. He began his musical journey with the bass guitar as a member of his school band, he has also played for ASET's music club (DASP) and band "The Octalz". Currently he is playing as a full time bass guitarist/composer/lyricist for Delhi's well known rock band Daksh, which gave the official soundtrack for an online short movie named "Kuch Spice to Make it Meetha" featuring Purab Kohli and Nauheed Cyrusi. Parthajeet believes that a true musician should be versatile with his/her genre and so he has developed himself in such a way that today he is comfortable in playing a variety of both Indian and western music, ranging right from metal to Indian semi classical. And if you thought that this guy could only play a guitar, then heres this for you, Parthajeet is also a former state level Taekwondo player and silver medalist and holds diploma in fine arts. He is a man of many talents and we wish him luck and hope that he achieves what he craves for, or should we say every musician craves for, and that is the ability to keep producing music that is pleasant to everyone and the most importantly to himself.

An Innovative thought: Automatic Tool Picker Machine

The final year students of B. Tech. (MAE) 2008-2012 designed and developed an Automatic Tool Picker Machine (AVR-I) during their Final year Project. AVR-I is developed to use it in mechanical engineering labs and workshops. At such places, a person is required to constantly supervise the use and maintenance of the tools required in the lab. The project reduces the burden of storage, maintenance and supervision for the person(s) responsible for the above mentioned workload by making it automatic. Now instead of the lab assistant, keeping the record of the tools, by writing them down in a register, issuing them to the students and keeping track of any damage, this machine will perform all the above mentioned tasks. While working on this project, the team was able to achieve storage and issuing of six machine tools. The team completed the design and working of a robotic arm which would pick and place the required tools to be provided thereby providing access to the tools required. Its a unique concept. The team came across this idea while walking past a vending machine at Rajiv Chowk Metro station. The team modified its concept in the sense that instead of inserting money and selecting a commodity, in the machine they can implement a card scanner which would scan the identity card of the person who wants to issue a tool, thereby storing the data of that person in a data storage device provided in the machine. The operation of this machine is similar to that of an ATM machine. The machine is controlled by microprocessors in which the commands and instructions to perform specific operations would be stored. The machine, like an ATM machine, would ask to show the identity cards. The identity cards would be of specific frequencies so that other cards would not operate the machine. Once the card is scanned and access is granted it would display and store the details of the persons identity stored in the card. It would enquire about the number of the person and type of tools required. Once the input is provided, a robotic arm would pick the tools from its position and drop it in a drawer. The machine also stores the time and date of issuance of tools and would keep track of whether the tool was returned back or not. The workers will also be given a receipt containing a special code. While returning the tools, the person must enter the code so that the machine retrieves the data from the database about all tools that were taken and have to be returned back. The person then places the tools in the drawer and the robotic arm will pick the tools up one by one from the drawer and put them back in their positions. This device can significantly be installed in various labs of schools and colleges. It can also be used in industries where inventory is more and manual labour is less. Project Team : 1. Coal has been used as a useful fuel resource for more than 2,300 years since the time of the ancient Greeks. From those humble beginnings, it has grown to a level where excess of seven billion tonnes are burnt to generate more than 40 per cent of the world's electricity. Despite its less than glowing environmental credentials, the use of coal is set to soar over the next decade, driven by the economic growth of the emerging nations, particularly China and India. Seemingly flying in the face of global attempts to curb carbon, coal already the single largest source for generation of electricity is predicted to grow by 600,000t a day over the next five years. "Global demand for coal will continue to expand aggressively over the next five years despite public calls in many countries for reducing dependence on high-carbon fuel as a primary energy source," International Energy Agency (IEA) executive director Maria van der Hoeven says. "For all of the talk about removing carbon from the energy system, the IEA projects average coal demand will grow by 600,000 tonnes every day over the next five years." There is no hiding from coal's importance in the energy mix. It is the world's most abundant and widely distributed fossil fuel, with globally proven reserves totaling nearly 1,000 billion tonnes. At present coal is burnt to produce in excess of 40 per cent of the world's electricity, although this rises significantly in some countries, with South Africa and Poland both topping 90 per cent and China pushing 80 per cent. Even the highly, economically advanced US uses coal for almost half of its power generation. Despite the climate change concerns and legislation, the role of coal in the energy mix is indelible and indispensible owing to the continued economic growth in regions such as China and India. "Demand for coal has grown rapidly over the last decade, outstripping that for gas, oil, nuclear and renewable energy sources," van der Hoeven adds. "But this comes at a cost. Coal contributes to over 40 per cent of global anthropomorphic CO2 emissions and more than 70 per cent of CO2 emissions that arise from power generation are attributed to coal. "To play its role in a sustainable energy future, its environmental footprint needs to be reduced; using coal more efficiently is an important first step. Beyond efficiency improvements, carbon capture and storage (CCS) must be deployed to make deep cuts in CO2 emissions."

COAL IS STILL THE KING

Coal has traditionally been lambasted as an environmental evil, but its use within the power generation sectors will keep growing in the next decade. In India, despite having 14 percent of the worlds recoverable reserves of hard coal, it has been unable to meet its domestic requirements and is having to resort to large imports, which were nearly zero five years ago. As much as 70 percent of the countrys electricity is derived from coal, for major consumers including the state-owned NTPC, Reliance Infrastructure, JindalPower, Torrent Power, Essar, SAIL and Lanco. Infratech and CIL.

Plugging in offshore wind power

ELECTRIC DIGEST

Efficiency
In coal-fired power generation, efficiency is an important performance parameter. Clearly raising efficiency will reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), a 1 per cent improvement in overall efficiency can result in up to 3 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions. There are also side benefits such as a reduction in the emission of conventional pollutants and extending the life of coal resources. The fossil-fuel industry has made considerable progress in increasing efficiency with supercritical (SC) and ultra supercritical (USC) pulverised coalfired (PC) technology. While sub critical plants can achieve efficiencies of almost 40 per cent, state of the art USC plants produce a far superior performance. USC plants operating at high-steam conditions, with temperatures of 600C to 620C and pressures over 25MPa (250 bar), result in design efficiencies of 45-46 per cent on bituminous coals in some parts of the world. Unit capacity for such plants has reached up to 1100MWe. If ongoing developments in materials are successful, the efficiency of the best PC plants may approach 50 per cent in the next 10 to 15 years. Progress is also being made in the development of circulating fluidised bed combustion (CFBC) plants. These can make use of low rank fuels and result in lower emissions of conventional pollutants. The first SC CFBC plant of 460MWe size was commissioned at Lagisza, Poland, in 2009, and designs for larger units exist. For CFBC, there will continue to be a significant market, particularly for lower-grade coals, high sulphur coals, opportunity fuels and biomass. Successful operation of the supercritical unit at Lagisza should pave the way for the construction of such units in other countries, particularly China. As far as integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) power generation is concerned, there are only six coal-based units in the world. However, a small number of new projects have been initiated llenges to be overcome, however, such as improving the cost and availability of IGCC, before the

technology can be more widely deployed. An important factor is that IGCC is well placed technically to capture CO2. Though additional costs will be significant, some consider they may be lower than for pulverised coal systems. worldwide, each at some stage of planning or construction. There are challenges to be overcome, however, such as improving the cost and availability of IGCC, before the technology can be more widely deployed. An important factor is that IGCC is well placed technically to capture CO2. Though additional costs will be significant, some consider they may be lower than for pulverised coal systems. Another challenge for increased efficiency is the poor quality of coal. Around 45 per cent of available coal is either high moisture or high ash, which often results in inefficiencies in power plants . The traditional solution to this is drying coal pre combustion, but this is a highly energy-intensive process that has its own technology challenges. There is a concerted drive to develop less energy intensive coal drying technologies, with research underway in Australia, Germany and the US, but till date there are no plans to accelerate these efforts into large scale commercial plants, to reduce its ash and sulphur content. Success in developing more efficient coal drying and beneficiation technologies will promote the wider use of low rank coals in both ultra supercritical pulverised coal and IGCC applications.

The transmission of power from large, offshore wind farms is a considerable technical challenge. It is similar to that faced by oil exploration companies in 1960s when they first began to exploit offshore oil and gas reserves in the North Sea. A reliable, modern and efficient grid, both onshore and offshore, is required. Offshore, the challenge is to more efficiently connect power harvested at the sea with the onshore transmission system, while at the same time building a system that can actively contribute to stability and security of supply by enabling further integration of the European power market. This was the dilemma mulled over by global renewable energy consultancy 3E when it analysed the situation in a report for the OffshoreGrid project, co-financed by the European Commission under the EU's Intelligent Energy Europe programme. The consultancy published its final report late last year. Not surprisingly, the technical solution deemed most viable was a meshed grid consisting of linked hub connections. This would entail connecting projects located in close proximity so that they could share a single transmission line to shore. The

report predicted that this would shave 11.5bn from the original 67bn. The Hub Hub connections generally become economically viable for distances above 50km from shore, when the sum of the installed capacity in a small area (about 20 km around the hub) is relatively large, thenstandard available HVDC Voltage Source Converter (VSC) systems can be used. Wind farms situated closer than 50km to an onshore connection point are virtually always connected individually to shore. "Apart from the costs savings, offshore hubs can also help to mitigate the environmental and social impact of laying multiple cables through sensitive coastal areas and allow for more efficient logistics during installations," Geert Palmers, chief executive officer at 3E, explains. If these hub connections were combined with an even more interconnected meshed grid, the necessary additional costs of 3.5bn-4.5bn would be compensated by 13-17bn of additional benefits over 25 years of grid operation.

Future plants
When it comes to selecting technology to be used in future coal-fired power plants the method of selection is key. While there are several proposals for further commercial demonstrations of IGCC and some are being constructed, SC and USC pulverised coal plants continue to dominate new plant orders. It is possible that IGCC, with or without CCS, may penetrate the market on a large scale only where the co-production of power and chemicals can be economically demonstrated.

ELECTRIC DIGEST
Volume 1, Issue 1, August 2012

The project outlined two potential cost-efficient grid designs, that they called the Direct Design and the Split Design. In the Direct Design, interconnectors are built to promote unconstrained trade between countries and electricity markets as average price difference levels are high. Once additional direct interconnectors become non-beneficial, tee-in, hub-tohub and meshed grid concepts are added to arrive at an overall grid design. Tee-in connections are when a wind farm or hub is connected to a pre-existing or planned transmission line or interconnector between countries, rather than directly to shore, while hub-tohub involves the interconnection of several wind farm hubs to form transmission corridors. The Split Design is essentially designing an offshore grid around the planned offshore wind farms. As a starting point interconnections are built by splitting the connection of some of the larger offshore wind farms between countries. These split connections establish a path for trade, and the offshore wind farm nodes are further interconnected to establish an overall meshed design where beneficial. Which connection concept is best depends on several factors, such as the distribution of the offshore wind farms, the distance to shore, and in the case of interconnecting several wind farms and/or countries, the distance of the farms to each other. Technical solution One solution to connecting offshore wind farms is a concept developed by ABB - self-installing gravity-based structure (GBS) platforms. The company is currently working on a contract worth around 600m for TenneT, the Dutch-German transmission grid operator, to create the DolWin2 power link that will connect offshore wind farms in the North Sea to the German mainland grid. DolWin2 is the largest power transmission project in ABB's history. It will feature the world's largest offshore high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system with a rating of over 900MW, keeping electrical losses to less than 1 per cent per converter station. On completion in 2015, the link will be capable of supplying more than one and a half million houses with clean wind-generated electricity. DolWin2 is ABB's third offshore wind connection order for TenneT, following the 800MW Dolwin1 link awarded in 2010 and the BorWin1 project. Both the BorWin1 and Dolwin1 projects feature conventional fixed platforms to house the offshore converter stations. However, the DolWin2 platform will be based on a new GBS design concept, building on experience gained from semi-submersible floating platforms for the oil and gas sector.

experience gained from semi-submersible floating platforms for the oil and gas sector. Wind farms in the DolWin cluster will be connected by 155kV AC cables to the HVDC converter station platform situated in the North Sea. This will then transmit the electricity at +320 kV DC via 45km of subsea cable and 90km of land cable to the HVDC onshore station at Drpen-West on the German mainland grid, where it will be converted to 380kV AC. "ABB pioneered HVDC technology in the early 1950s and is a world leader in the field," Peter Jones, engineering manager grid systems ABB UK, explains. "In total around 140GW of HVDC transmission capacity is installed in some 145 projects worldwide." HVDC Light transmission technology deploys a new Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor converter in combination with XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) DC cable systems. This innovation complements the traditional bipolar semiconductor-based converter technology to provide a state-of-the-art power system with increased controllability. "It is easy to install and offers a number of environmental benefits, such as neutral electromagnetic fields, oil-free cables and compact converter stations," Jones adds. "It is ideal for connecting remote offshore wind farms to mainland networks and overcoming distance limitations and grid constraints, while ensuring minimal electrical losses and efficient performance. The continuous development of HVDC Light has increased the power range from tens of megawatts up to 1,200MW at 320kV." Initially, HVDC Light had losses of around 3 per cent per converter station. In the latest generation the losses have been reduced to about 1 per cent. Improvements in reliability have also been driven by dynamic performance, harmonic generation and the flexibility to accommodate changing grid conditions. The latest generation of converters is based on cascaded twolevel converter topology, eliminating the need for AC filters and enabling a more compact converter design with low harmonics and audible noise. With a footprint of 220m x 150m, the new converter stations are substantially smaller than previous generations. The first HVDC link to connect an offshore wind farm with an AC grid is the #400MW BorWin1. Based on HVDC Light technology, this 200km link connects the Bard Offshore 1 wind farm off Germany's North Sea coast to the HVAC grid on the German mainland.

Once complete, the BARD Offshore 1 wind farm will consist of 80 wind generators, each with a capacity of 5MW. These will feed their power into a 36kV AC cable system. This voltage will then be transformed to 155kV AC before reaching the HVDC Light converter station on a dedicated platform. Here the AC is converted to '150kV DC and fed into two 125km sea cables, which then continue into two 75km land cables to the landbased converter station at Diele in Germany. The conventional fixed platform featured on BorWin1 is a well proven concept which is reliable and fully certified. There is also the added advantage that there are a number of shipyards around the world with experience in fabricating this type of platform. The drawback of the fixed platform is that installation/lifting is only possible in better sea conditions during May to September. Furthermore, with a 1,000MW HVDC station weighing in at around 10,000t, it requires the world's largest crane vessel, which has implications for both costs and availability, and multiple offshore lifts. An alternative is the jack-up self-installing (floating) platform. This does not require a large crane vessel to install and there are many yards with the capability to fabricate platforms with no design risk. However, experience is limited with large platforms. A complex design of jack-up system and platform is also required to handle offshore jack-up operation for this weight. The GBS platform is mainly intended for use with wind farms in sea depths of between 15m and 45m. It is constructed onshore and all the platform systems fully commissioned in dock. This minimises offshore hook up works. Offshore commissioning is limited to energisation and trial runs after installation of the

HV cables. onshore and all the platform systems fully commissioned in dock. This minimises offshore hook up works. Offshore commissioning is limited to energisation and trial runs after installation of the HV cables. The platform is towed into position by tugs and secured on the seabed by its own weight and ballasting. This approach significantly reduces the weather dependence of the installation operation. The GBS platform is designed to reduce environmental impact. There are minimal marine operations required for installation, with only limited seabed preparation required, while the elimination of noisy piling operations ensures there is no impact on wildlife. The platform is also easy to remove and decommission at the end of its service life.

The civil engineering department is growing day & night. During the last one year, faculty strength has increased considerably. The new faculty members of the department are:

R K Tomar Assistant Professor Department of Civil Engineering Sustainable Development

The GDP of developed nations like USA, UK and Germany is significantly more than that of the developing nations like India, China, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The energy consumption of developed countries is also more than the developing countries. This shows a positive correlation between the energy consumption pattern and the GDP . The developing countries should, therefore, use more and more energy to reach in the category of developed nations. The conventional sources of energy in present day scenario are fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) and nuclear fuels. And electricity is the most convenient form of energy. The fossil Fuels & Nuclear Fuels are the major means of power generation in the present day world. The resource magnitude of these fuels is finite. With present rate of consumption they will be exhausted as follows: - Fossil fuels : 40-100 years conversion efficiency of the power plant is 40% thus 60% of heat of the combustion of coal goes to air and water. The carbon dioxide and heat added to atmosphere has resulted in the increase of earths planetary temperature which leads to Global warming, due to global warming reduction in polar snow cover and raising of the equatorial ocean level to flood the low laying island and coastal regions. Furthermore, in technical terms, we can say that the excessive use of fossil fuels is an approach of the present generation at the cost of future generation. This, therefore, is not a sustainable approach. In clear terms, we can say that we can regard only that development as sustainable development which is technologically and environmentally acceptable.

Sustainability in Building
Buildings are the most proximate and visible symbols of present day lifestyles. The objective of a building is to provide suitable 1. Thermal 2. Luminous 3. Atmospheric 4. Aqueous 5. Sonic environment for its inhabitants. In general, the climate inside a building is different than outside. So a building is a man made environment. In the language of environment, we call it built environment. If we want the climate inside the building to be comfortable, the indoor parameter such as mean lumens, radiation temperature, air temperature, humidity and air velocity which are controlled by artificial lighting, air conditioning and air disinfection

- Nuclear fuels (Uranium &Thorium) : 200 years Mr. J Bhattacharjee (Professor, Civil Engineering) has published three papers in journal/conference proceedings this year: 1. Strategies for Disaster Management to reduce the impact of Natural Disaster in India in International Journal IRJMSH (International Research Journal of Management sociology & humanities) in Volume-2 of 2012 (Page no 90-103). In the present days, we drive energy from fossil fuels and nuclear fuels. For this purpose we have to convert the fuel in the usable energy. This conversion process involved many energy transformations. All these transformations adversely affect the environment. Let us consider the case of electric power plant using coal as fuel. The coal is extracted by mining. It may be surface mining or underground mining. During this process, top soil of the land is damaged, ridges and valleys are formed and form huge refuge banks occupying hundreds and thousands of acres of land. The other process is combustion of coal which adds fly ash, smoke, soot, gaseous oxides of sulphur , nitrogen and carbon to the atmospheric air and more over

systems have to be applied which are powered by electricity. So a building in general is specified by its electrical energy demand. The common aspirants are invariably linked to making buildings as comfortable and convenient as possible. It is in this pursuit that the present day buildings have become the third largest consumer of fossil energy and power after industry and agriculture. About 30% to 40% of the total global basic resources are invested in the building sector, which is growing at a rapid pace.

Sustainable building materials must provide comfort and health to its inhabitants and should not give rise to the production of harmful emissions and wastes in terms of materials and energy consumption. Selection of the building materials in a sustainable manner for the development is, to preserve the natural environment and resource generating base for the future, protecting earths life support system.

In conclusion we can say that

The building processes are excessively degrading the environment and are depleting the resources at an alarming rate. Penalty is in terms of pollution and environmental as well as ecological imbalances. These activities of the present generation are adversely affecting the resources for the future generations. We must therefore turn to adaptation of a sustainable way of living. Reduction of the consumption of coal, oil, and wood fuels and their conservation is an obvious approach to combat environmental degradation. It is referred to as Energy Conservation in Resource Conservation Terminology.

Concept of Sustainable Materials

The manufacturing of conventional building materials, process of construction generates pollution in terms of wastes and emissions which destroys the world ecological balance.

The life cycle of building materials involves the collection of raw material, manufacturing, distribution, installation of desired products, reuse or disposal of the material and the most important factor is its impact on the environment. The entire life cycle of a building material is classified in to Three Categories
