2010 Airbus engine blast: Defect not spotted

CANBERRA
ROLLS-ROYCE repeatedly failed to identify a defect in an oil pipe that caused one of its engines to explode in a Qantas Airways aircraft carrying more than 400 people over Indonesia in 2010, an Australian safety regulator found. In its final report on the incident, the Australian Safety Transport Bureau (ASTB) said the company missed multiple opportunities to detect the faulty component, which almost certainly would have caused the Airbus A380 to crash had it not been for the exceptional skill of the pilots. It was the first major safety scare to affect the A380, and led to Qantas suspending its operation of the aircraft for three weeks. The ASTB report could lead to broader requirements for new aircraft certification around the world. Those opportunities were missed for a number of reasons, but generally due to ambiguities within the manufacturers procedures and the non-adherence by a number of the manufacturing staff to those procedures, the report said yesterday. The four-engine A380 was flying from Singapore to Sydney with 433 passengers and 26 crew on board when one of its engines blew up, spraying shrapnel and dropping chunks of debris on Batam island. The pilots skill likely averted a disaster as the plane had suffered a series of system problems. They flew the plane back to Singapore and landed with limited controls, stopping 150m before the end of the runway with four blown tyres, brakes heated to 900 deg C and fuel leaking to the ground.

Malaysia, Indonesia to work together

ALAYSIA and Indonesia agreed to work together to find a permanent solution to the haze problem, Bernama reported yesterday. Malaysia has expressed the hope that government officials from both countries could work constantly in monitoring and checking the hot spots, especially during the dry season, to prevent forest and peat fires which contribute to the haze problem, Natural Resources and Environment Minister G. Palanivel told report-

ers after meeting Indonesian Environment Minister Balthasar Kambuaya. Datuk Seri Palanivel also handed Dr Kambuaya a letter from Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak for Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. After meeting his Indonesian counterpart in Jakarta, Mr Palanivel urged Indonesia to ratify a key South-east Asian treaty aimed at tackling the haze. The Environment Minister has to deal with this ratification, he said. If they can ratify the treaty, then they can go forward. The Asean agreement is aimed

at tackling the annual outbreaks of haze by increasing regional cooperation. It was struck in 2002 following South-east Asias worst haze crisis in 1997 and 1998, which was estimated to have cost the region US$9 billion. But while the Asean deal is principally aimed at stopping haze that comes from forest and slash-and-burn fires in Indonesia, Jakarta is the only member of the 10-country bloc yet to ratify it. Dr Kambuaya said yesterday that Indonesia was in the process of ratifying the treaty. Mr Palanivel said that a meet-

ing between five Asean members on the haze scheduled for August would be brought forward to July 17 due to the current crisis. Thousands are tackling the fires, which are centred in Sumatras Riau province. The blazes eased on Wednesday after heavy rainfall. The skies in Singapore are now clear, thanks to rain and favourable winds. In Malaysia, the haze has eased dramatically as rain fell in many areas after the haze hit hazardous levels in recent days. Palls of smoke from slash-and-burn agricultural fires

pushed haze levels to record highs in Singapore last week, shrouding the city in smog, and badly affected parts of Malaysia.

Parents get kids haze-ready for school

BY ADRIAN LIM

ROM packing masks in schoolbags to coming up with contingency plans to keep their children at home, parents in Singapore have been preparing for the new school term in the light of the haze crisis. On Wednesday, Environment and Water Resources Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said that it should be safe for schools to reopen on Monday, if the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) remains in the moderate range. Still, some parents My Paper spoke to yesterday expressed concern about their childrens health during the upcoming school term and said they would keep kids at home if PSI levels are too high. Ms Angeline Chan who has one son in Primary 1 and another in Kindergarten 1 said that if the PSI reaches about 250, which is in the middle of the unhealthy

range, she will consider grounding her kids at home. Im quite worried. The school is (an) open-air (environment) and doesnt have air-conditioning, said the 41-year-old manager of a manufacturing firm. Ms Christine Ting, 46 who has a son, 14, and two daughters, 12 and seven said she will be watching the PSI, even though she feels the PSI readings sometimes do not reflect the immediate situation. The senior executive of a hu-

man-resource consultancy is particularly worried about her younger children, as they are of an age where they are more susceptible to...infections. Mr Jonathan Lau, 37, who has twin daughters in Primary 1, said: If it reaches the point where they have to wear masks in the classroom, we will take them out of school. Besides tracking the PSI reading, he will be watching the PM2.5 reading, which measures fine particulate matter 2.5 mi-

crons in size or smaller. PM2.5 particles are said to be more dangerous to a persons health than larger particles. Mr Lau, a banker, said he will be monitoring both readings, as his twins are asthmatic. The Ministry of Education (MOE) said on Wednesday that it is monitoring the haze situation closely. An MOE spokesman said the ministry will take reference from the health advisories and work closely with schools to put in place appropriate measures to ensure the well-being of our students and staff. Ms Chan hoped schools would cut down on physical-education lessons during this hazy period. Children should be encouraged to drink more water and teachers should take note of which kids are asthmatic, she added. If there is an urgent need to close schools, Ms Chan said that an air-conditioned area, like a library, could be a holding area for children before

their parents can pick them up. Mr Lau hopes schools will also provide some form of e-learning, so pupils can keep up with the syllabus at home if schools are shut. Today, the 24-hour PSI is expected to be in the moderate range, although PM2.5 levels continue to be slightly elevated, according to the National Environment Agency. adrianl@sph.com.sg

Govt allays fears on pre-school fees with caps

BY WINONA WEE
EVEN as the Government rolled out a call for proposals yesterday to rope in private-sector schools for an anchor operator (AOP) grant scheme, some parents were worried that it would mean higher pre-school and childcare fees for their kids. This is more so as some brand-name private pre-schools, which can charge above $1,000 a month, have expressed interest in applying to be an AOP. Said businessman E. Ooi, 43, a father of two kids aged three and four: Not everyone can afford high (fees). Education should be affordable because it moulds our childrens futures. But the Government has assured that there will be safeguards. Currently, there are two AOPs: PAP Community Foundation (PCF) and the National Trades Union Congress My First Skool. They are tasked with providing good-quality and affordable programmes. In return, they get recurrent grants from the Government to lower operating costs. More AOPs are being introduced to cater to the needs of the diverse learning habits of pre-schoolers, said Mr Chan Chun Sing, Acting Minister for Social and Family Development, at a media briefing yesterday. For yesterdays call for proposals, commercial pre-school operators can apply to be an AOP if they set up a distinct company to ensure that the funds will be used to benefit needy children, instead of boosting the operators profits, among other criteria. New fee caps will be in place, which current and new AOPs have to adhere to. For instance, pre-school fees will be capped at $160 a month. Currently, AOPs monthly fees range from $48 to $350, while that for the pre-school sector in general is from $80 to $1,750. On commercial pre-school operators using public funds, Mr Chan said: Money cannot be their primary goal. Their social mission must be their primary goal. Mrs Ng Gim Choo, group managing director of EtonHouse International, said that the subsidies will help lower operation costs as well as fees. A PCF spokesman said that with more AOPs coming on board, it will allow more operators to do what we are doing by way of keeping childcare and kindergarten fees affordable. Families will benefit as choices (will be) wider, she said. wwee@sph.com.sg

Man jailed and fined in wine investing scam

TWENTY investors poured nearly $176,000 into investment company Assetton to buy high-quality French wine so they could sell it for a profit in the future. They received certificates apparently from wine-storage facility Grand Cru Storage attesting that their wines were safely stored at the facility in Bordeaux, France. But it was all a sham, a district court heard yesterday. The certificates were fake and, in many cases, no wine had been purchased. Former Assetton director and mastermind Mohan Nainan Nainan, 55, was jailed for 11 months after he pleaded guilty yesterday to abetting in the forgery of the certificates and misappropriating the $176,000. Nainan also lied to the Registrar of Companies that his companys paid-up capital was $450,000. But its shareholders had not paid for the shares issued to them. He was fined $7,000 for contravening the Companies Act.

Hello, why is Kitty so costly?

BY LISA OON AND PRABU KRISHNA MOORTHY

HE Hello Kitty craze has hit a new high or, rather, low, with soaring prices online and even cat fights between customers. With the last plushie from McDonalds Hello Kitty Fairy Tales toy promotion having gone on sale yesterday the limited-edition Singing Bone Kitty enterprising owners have been auctioning the cat toys online. McDonalds Singapore said on Facebook at 10.11am yesterday that the Singing Bone Kitty had sold out after it hit outlets at 12am. On eBay.com.sg, starting bids for the Singing Bone Kitty from a seller here could hit $1,000. A toy sells for $4.60 with a McDonalds Extra Value Meal, or $10 without a meal. A bid for one Kitty even reached $126,000, although it is uncertain if the bid was genuine. The seller, who started the auction below $10, said on the toys auction page that bidders should contact him on his mobile phone as there were fake eBay accounts set up to outbid sincere buyers, noting that such incidents had occurred before. My Papers calls to him went unanswered and the auction has been removed. Some sellers were auctioning a complete set of six Fairy Tale Kitties for hundreds of dollars. McDonalds said on Facebook that it doesnt support people buying the Kitties for resale, and regularly removes posts offering such services from its Facebook page. The fast-food chain added it will not hesitate to take appropriate action against its staff if any of them are found to have misappropriated the Kitties for personal gain. The queues at some outlets were said to have been so long that McDonalds staff had to curb the lines due to a limited plushie supply. Only patrons in the queue were issued coupons to buy the toys. A McDonalds spokesman said the coupons served as queue tickets so that customers do not have to queue when there are no more Kitties left. There were reports and online videos of people arguing over queue jumping and police officers being called in. One such incident occurred at a McDonalds outlet in Bukit Batok Central. A police spokesman confirmed the dispute. He added that the police advised the parties accordingly and no further assistance was required. Undergraduate Shaune Lim, 22, said queueing for the last Kitty was worth it. I was one of the first to get it, he said. myp@sph.com.sg

Treats in store as Singapore Zoo turns 40

BY LISA OON

XPECT the Singapore Zoo to deliver a more interactive experience to better engage younger visitors. That was one of the plans shared yesterday by Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) at an event to celebrate the zoos 40th birthday. Ms Claire Chiang, the chairman of WRS, which runs the zoo, said that the zoo of the future in Singapore and in other parts of the world would be one that is interactive. She explained that the younger generation would have grown up with gadgets and prefer immediate access to information.

(The zoo) has to be immersive, so you feel like you are going through a journey in the rainforest instead of being a passive observer, she said, adding that using social media could be one way to make the zoo experience more interactive. The zoo is also going beyond children and reaching out to other demographics, such as youth and adults, to spread the animal-conservation message. At the zoos birthday celebration yesterday, there were performances and photo opportunities for guests with some of the animals, such as elephants and orang utans. Among the guests yesterday was former president S R Nathan.

Fans of the zoo are in for a treat: For the whole of next month, all Singaporeans and permanent residents can enjoy 40 per cent off the entry price. Ms Chiang said of the zoos birthday: Turning 40 is a monumental event and this is a time for us to reflect on all that we have accomplished with the Singapore Zoo, and what it means to our families, friends and international visitors. oonlisa@sph.com.sg

Park set to charm China and meet old friend Xi

BEIJING

ITH her keen interest in Chinese philosophy and self-taught Mandarin, South Korean President Park Geun Hye is set to charm China on her first trip to the country as President. Chinas president, Mr Xi Jinping, welcomed his South Korean counterpart yesterday as an old friend of China, and agreed to make a push for new talks with North Korea as two of Asias newest leaders met for the first time. Ms Park arrived in Beijing yesterday with the biggest business delegation to join a South Korean leaders state visit, signalling the importance she puts on China in boosting her nations economic fortunes. She is set to make a speech at Tsinghua University, which is expected to be delivered in Mandarin. Among all the previous South Korean presidents, Ms Park has the best Mandarin. Its also very rare for a foreign countrys leader to give a public speech when visiting China, not to mention use the Chinese language, said Mr Wang Junsheng, a researcher on East Asia studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Ms Park is an admirer of Chinese culture and her favourite book is History Of Chinese Philosophy by Feng Youlan, a renowned Chinese philosopher, according to media reports. China is South Koreas leading trading partner, and South Korean imports to China overtook those from Japan last September, according to DBS Bank. However, the strategic side of the partnership has always been coloured by the issue of North Korea and stagnated under Ms Parks predecessor, Mr Lee Myung Bak, who focused his efforts on boosting Seouls alliance with Washington. The hopes of a reboot have been bolstered by the fact that

RARE MOVE: South Korean President Park Geun Hye is set to make a speech in Mandarin at Tsinghua University. Ms Park and Mr Xi are both new leaders, having taken office within one month of each other earlier this year. Dr Fang Xiuyu, a professor of Korean Studies at Fudan University in Shanghai, said: Ms Park likes reading Chinese books and understands Chinese. Her vision is very similar to Mr Xis. They have lots of shared ideas about cooperation in East Asia. The South Korean leaders visit reflects the shifting power balance in Asia. Like past leaders, she visited the United States in her first trip abroad last month, though she is breaking with a precedent that has seen South Korean leaders visit Japan second. A commentary in the state-run China Daily newspaper by Mr Woo Jin Hoon, a guest professor at Renmin University, said: This breaks the order established by her predecessors. Ms Park is visiting China ahead of Japan as it is more of a priority.

Manila looks to US and Japan

MANILA

HE Philippines said yesterday it was looking to give the United States and Japan greater access to its military bases, as it seeks to counter what it perceives as a rising security threat from China. The government was initially drafting a plan that would allow US forces to spend more time on Filipino bases, something that could also be offered to Japans military later, Defence Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said. If and when there is agreement on the access, then there will be equipment coming in from the US, Mr Gazmin told a joint news conference in Manila after meeting visiting Japan Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera. Now, as far as Japan is concerned, we do welcome other countries particularly Japan since it is a strategic partner in accordance with our existing protocols. President Benigno Aquino had

already stated that the Philippines would welcome an increased US military presence, amid tense disputes with China over competing claims to parts of the South China Sea. However, Mr Gazmins comments indicated that the Philippines was hoping to expand on the standard military exercises that the two nations armed forces regularly engage in. Modalities for increased rotational presence are right now being examined. One modality is the conduct of high-value, high-impact exercise, he said, without elaborating. However, he emphasised the plan would not see any new bases or a permanent US presence in the Philippines. Japan and the Philippines, who both share a rival claimant in China, stepped up their strategic partnership in the field of defence, particularly in maritime affairs, after defence ministers of both countries met at Camp Aguinaldo. Mr Onodera and Mr Gazmin met at the Department of Nation-

al Defence Headquarters for more than an hour, where they discussed the strengthening of defence cooperation and issues they were both facing. Mr Onodera emphasised that they were very concerned with the Philippines situation in the South China Sea, and supported its position that the territorial dispute be solved through international arbitration and not through the use of force. When asked about the Philippines plan, the Chinese Foreign Ministry urged its neighbours to push for peace. Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying told reporters: China urges the Philippines and regional countries to meet one another halfway, make joint efforts to maintain mutual trust between countries, make positive efforts towards regional peace and security, and play a constructive role. The US had tens of thousands of troops stationed in the Philippines, at the Clark Air Base and Subic Naval Base north of Manila, until the early 1990s. The US, a former colonial rul-

er of the Philippines, was forced to abandon the bases amid anti-US sentiment and a row over rent. The Constitution now bans any permanent foreign bases in the Philippines. However, the Clark and Subic facilities, now partly converted for business use, still host and service US military aircraft and warships on short-term exercises. One of those began yesterday in waters between the Philippines main island of Luzon and a disputed shoal now occupied by China.

TESTIMONY: Michael Jacksons son, Prince, said the singer wanted more time for rehearsals for the 50 London shows planned.

MJ warned tour would kill him, says son

LOS ANGELES
AN EXHAUSTED Michael Jackson warned that tour promoters AEG Live were going to kill him as he rehearsed for a marathon concert tour shortly before his death, testified his son, Prince, on Wednesday. He just wished he had more time for rehearsals, Prince said at the wrongfuldeath trial, in which the Jackson family accuses AEG Live of negligently hiring physician Conrad Murray to care for the star for his doomed This Is It shows. The 16-year-old also recounted a harrowing scene on the day Jackson died in 2009, recalling how sister Paris was screaming as Murray tried to revive their father. Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2011 for giving Jackson an overdose of the anaesthetic propofol, to help him cope with chronic insomnia as he rehearsed for the series of 50 planned London shows. Testimonies at the manslaughter trial and the current civil case have heard details of how the self-styled King of Pops state of health deteriorated rapidly in the months before his death. On Wednesday a day after the fourth anniversary of Jacksons death Prince said the singer was upset while on the phone a lot of time, most of the time with AEG Live chief Randy Phillips. Prince said: (Jackson) would cry sometimes. He said, Theyre gonna kill me, theyre gonna kill me. When asked who Jackson was referring to, he said: People in AEG, Randy Phillips.

Telenor, Ooredoo get Myanmars nod

YANGON

YANMAR yesterday awarded telecom licences to Norways Telenor and Qatari firm Ooredoo, the government committee in charge of the bids said, opening up one of the worlds last virtually untapped mobile-phone markets. The committee is pleased to announce that Telenor Mobile Communications and Ooredoo have been selected as the two successful applicants, from the 11 global consortiums remaining on a shortlist, it said in the statement. SingTel, billionaire George So-

ros and France Telecom were among the bidding groups. Its a tremendous growth opportunity, but it will require a fair bit of investment, and returns will be long-dated too, said Mr Sachin Gupta, a Singapore-based analyst at Nomura Holdings. I dont think its going to be an easy exercise for anyone, but having previous green-field experience and strong local partnership should help. The licences are among the biggest prizes for foreign companies since Myanmar President Thein Sein moved to allow greater political and economic freedom after taking power in 2011. The United States and European Union have moved to ease sanctions, attracting companies

such as Coca-Cola and Ford Motor to the former military-run state even as human-rights groups warn of abuses against ethnic and religious minorities. The government proceeded with naming the winners even after parliamentarians moved to delay the announcement, Mr Set Aung, deputy minister of national planning and economic development, who is overseeing the process, said by phone yesterday. He said before that announcement that, while he would prefer local companies, the process complied with international practices. The playing field should be level, he said. We, the technical team, arent biased in the selection of the winners. Myanmar plans to boost

telecom coverage to as much as 80 per cent of the country by 2016. Winners of the tender must launch their services within nine months of the licence being granted, and install a network to cover a quarter of the country within a year, and three quarters within five years. One bidder has estimated the required spending to develop a Myanmar network at about US$2 billion (S$2.5 billion). It has a mobile-phone penetration rate of 9 per cent, compared to 70 per cent in Cambodia, 87 per cent in Laos and more than 100 per cent in Thailand, the Communication Ministry said in January. I have never seen any inves-

tors who are not coming to a country before everything is perfect, Mr Set Aung said. All the companies understand there are risks. Some companies probably think there is too much risk, and other companies think its a calculated risk.

Ikea billionaire to return to Sweden after 40 years

LONDON
IKEA billionaire Ingvar Kamprad, Europes richest person, said he will move back to Sweden, a country he fled four decades ago to avoid high tax rates. Mr Kamprads US$51.7-billion (S$66-billion) fortune makes him the fourth-wealthiest individual in the world, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The 87-year-old controls Ikea, the worlds largest furniture retailer, through a series of trusts and foundations. He left his homeland of Sweden for Switzerland in 1973 in an effort to keep Ikea closely held, something he said he could not do with the tax regime in Sweden at the time, according to foundation spokesman Per Heggenes. Moving back to Sweden gets me closer to my family and my old friends, Mr Kamprad said in a statement to Radio Sweden and newspapers in the country. After my dear wife, Margaretha, died about 11/2 years ago, there was (not much) keeping me in Switzerland. Ikano Group, the Kamprad familys investment vehicle, manages four Ikea franchises, a credit-card business and real-estate investments. Mr Heggenes told Radio Sweden: (Mr Kamprad) will pay taxes on his earnings, just like all other Swedes. But the move home has no other tax-related consequences. Mr Kamprad is US$1.5 billion ahead of Mr Amancio Ortega, Spains richest man. The 77-year-old owns 59 per cent of Inditex, the worlds largest clothing retailer and parent company of clothing line Zara.

Jet Li plays second fiddle to young stars

While its refreshing to see the usually-stoic Li in a funny role, Wen is the one with comedic potential. The latter has no qualms hamming it up for the camera flashing his underwear and donning a mini kilt. Audiences can play a game of spot the stars, thanks to a string of actors making cameo appearances, such as Hong Kong stars Raymond Lam and Michael Tse, and Chinese actor Huang Xiao Ming. The film squeezes in too many elements, leaving one bewildered by the numerous A-list actors and tropes of the crime, romance, action and comedy genres. At the end of the day, Im not too sure what the movie is, but I do know it aint a Jet Li movie. nggwen@sph.com.sg

BADGES OF FURY (PG)
Action comedy/98 minutes Rating: 2/5 NE might expect a high-octane cop thriller with the casting of Jet Li and a title like Badges Of Fury. But this film is hardly about the legendary action star, who takes on the role of Huang Fei Hong not the gongfu master, but a seasoned and jaded cop. In fact, the veteran actor plays second fiddle to his younger partner, the overenthusiastic, fumbling Wang Bu Er (played by Chinas Wen Zhang). In this film, the 28-year-old Wen has a whole lot more screentime than the 50-year-old Li, who seems content to languish in the background, making his presence felt sporadically with quirky dialogues and fights. The crime-fighting duo are bossed around by their female supervisor, Angela (played by Taiwans Michelle Chen).

WEIRD POLICE STORY: (From left) Wen Zhang, Michelle Chen and Jet Li play cops hunting a serial killer with a strange modus operandi. Dont expect a thriller headlining Li, as the film is really a comedy featuring Wen. PHOTO: SHAW The movie is really a huge hare-brained comedy, right from the premise of the plot. The trio are tasked to track down a serial killer with an unusual modus operandi that leaves his victims smiling. The investigation leads to aspiring actress Jinshui (played by Chinas Liu Shishi of mega China drama Scarlet Heart fame), a prime suspect who has dated all the victims. Theres more than meets the eye to this case, especially when Jinshuis buxomy stepsister, Dai Yi Yi (played by Chinas Liu Yan) appears. The sexy anchorman -turned-actress is clearly there to draw the eyeballs with her cleavage-bearing attire. The movie goes off on a tangent, with fight scenes peppered with over-the-top special effects. Its a waste not showing off the real deal. Li puts up a pretty exciting fight in the final brawl, but his finishing blow is, sadly, CGI-assisted.

FUKREY (PG)
Comedy/141 minutes Rating: 4/5 FOUR dreamers meet by chance. Each time Choocha (Varun Sharma) has a dream, Hunny (Pulkit Samrat) interprets it, before converting it into numbers to buy sure-win lottery tickets. They go on a roll and decide to set their sights even higher. As Choocha and Hunny plot ways to strike the biggest lottery, Zafar (Ali Fazal), a struggling musician, and Lali (Manjot Singh) become their partners in crime. Witty and stir-crazy, Fukrey is a cracker of a film which made me laugh so hard, my children who were with me have vowed not to watch a Bollywood comedy with me again.
DEEPIKA SHETTY

Rating: 2/5
TWO cops are forced to work together. One cop, Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock), is a fastidious martinet who is lonely; the other, Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), is an instinct-driven, street-smart slob who is angry at not getting the professional respect she deserves. Together, they chase down a criminal mastermind, learning life lessons along the way mostly that it is wrong to judge a book by its cover. What is surprising about this flat, uninteresting work is that director Paul Feig, who helmed the very funny and smart female-driven Bridesmaids (2011), is behind it. The film is indeed as dull and by-the-numbers as the trailer suggests.

HENTAI KAMEN: FORBIDDEN SUPER HERO (R21)

Fantasy comedy/106 minutes Rating: 3/5 HIGH-SCHOOL student Kyosuke (Ryohei Suzuki) discovers that he has superhuman powers when he wears a pair of panties on his face. To protect Aiko (Fumika Shimizu), whom he has a crush on, he has to defeat a creepy teacher (Ken Yasuda). It helps that director Yuichi Fukuda fully embraces the B-grade bizarreness of the material. Even as Kyosukes hormones and imagination run amok, his burgeoning romance with Aiko is cutely chaste and awkward. It turns out Hentai Kamen is as much about the power of love as it is about the power of perversion.

Curry delights in 10 minutes

BY GILLIAN PINTO
MANPOWER crunch and rising labour costs have spurred Old Chang Kee to open a self-service eatery called Curry Times Tingkat. The casual-dining restaurant at Alexandra Retail Centre lets customers place their orders and pay using Nets ATM or FlashPay cards at two self-service kiosks. Customers then pick up their food at the counter. The food served here includes curry-chicken rice, nasi lemak and fish-cutlet rice. With the $27,000 self-service system, only five staff members are needed to run the restaurant, compared with 15 staff members at the Curry Times outlet in Velocity. Old Chang Kees director, Ms Chow Hui Shien, revealed that it arrived at this concept after facing difficulties in hiring staff while planning the expansion of Curry Times eateries. There are other benefits when using a self-service system too. Theres no service charge, so you can keep those savings. Theres also reduced chances of incorrect orders, as customers get to view and pick their orders, Ms Chow said. Each interactive touchscreen kiosk has a bright and colourful interface, as well as pictures of dishes for customers to browse through. Meal and drink options are

F YOU think men in Singapore are boring and unromantic, you couldnt be more wrong. From flash mobs and song-and-dance routines to heartwarming video tributes, some men are pulling out all the stops when asking their girlfriends to marry them. These romantic gestures have inspired many people on citizen-journalism website Stomp. Stomper Serena, 25, was impressed by the efforts that a guy put in to propose to his girlfriend at Marina Barrage. The lucky girl happened to be her friend, Apple. Serena, a real-estate agent, said: I want to share with others that its not about how much money you spend on the proposal, but the sincerity and efforts put in. She said the guy, Wesley, took two months to plan the proposal. On that day, Wesley got one group of friends to distract Apple while he prepared the props for his proposal with another group. When Apple arrived at Marina

Who says Spore men arent romantic?

Barrage, she thought that she was witnessing someone elses proposal. She was shocked when she realised she was the star. Wesleys friends held up glow-in-the-dark signs as night fell that day. Other men in Singapore are pulling off elaborate proposals by roping in friends and family members. In one case, a local media company was hired to produce a short video that was played in a cinema as a prelude to the proposal. In the video produced by Moomedia, a young man named Malcolm was seen asking family members, relatives and friends for reasons his girlfriend Grace should marry him. When he asked her parents for Graces hand in marriage, her mother squealed in delight and embraced her future son-in-law. Malcolm got a yes from Grace in the cinema filled with family members and friends. Another memorable proposal involved a huge group of people at the Singapore Flyer. It kicked off with a flash mob. The man, Aaron, danced to several songs before giving a moving speech about his girlfriend Tracy. The proposal saw Tracy with tears of happiness and had the crowd cheering.

The most unlikely place to make a proposal has to be on board a ship at Changi Naval Base. But that was exactly where a Navy serviceman proposed to his girlfriend. Stomper Spider found a photo of the proposal on Facebook, with the caption: Great last day of Navy Open House. Ending with one of our very own proposing to his girlfriend out at sea. Great support from the crew of the RSS Vengeance/Valour to make the impossible happen! Well done! If you know of a funny or touching proposal, share it by sending in photos and videos to stomp@stomp.com.sg. baoyingc@sph.com.sg

Do electronic devices interfere with a planes navigation system?

WE CONTINUE the series in which we feature answers to questions sent in by the public, on a wide variety of topics, in Stomps Ask Libby section. Ask Libby is a collaboration between Stomp and Public Libraries Singapore, whose librarians research and provide answers to a diverse range of questions.

Send your questions to stomp@stomp.com.sg Here is this weeks question: Do electronic devices really interfere with a planes navigation system? There is no conclusive evidence to support the theory that electronic devices interfere with a planes navigation system, as it is difficult to verify or test such claims. The use of cell phones and devices that transmit radio waves are prohibited during a flight.

Other electronic devices can be used once a plane reaches a cruising altitude above 3,000m. Airlines adopt such restrictions as a precaution, to prevent signals from electronic devices interfering with air-traffic communications and disrupting navigation readings. As passengers tend to bring a variety of electronic devices with them and airlines are unable to tell exactly which one will cause problems the restrictions are needed.

HAPPY FEET: The Color Run, where runners are sprinkled with coloured powder, has been called the happiest race. PHOTO: IMG SINGAPORE

Happiest race to hit Singapore

BY GILLIAN PINTO
TS been called the happiest 5K on the planet, and its coming to Singapore. Making its debut in South-east Asia is The Color Run, a 5km untimed race. Heres the best bit: Participants, all to be dressed in white T-shirts, will be sprinkled with coloured powder at every 1km interval. To be held on Aug 17 and 18, the run which originated in the United States and was inspired by Indias Holi festival will take place on Sentosa. The race, which will start at 5pm on both days, will close with a festival featuring live music. Participants will be encouraged to fling about coloured powder left in their race packs. At a press conference announcing The Color Run on Wednesday, event organiser IMGs spokesman, Ms Michelle Spencer, said participants are free to run, dance, skip or crawl at your own pace as a celebration of being alive and happy. By the end of the event, participants will emerge in a smattering of colours, almost like an artists palette, she added. She said that serious runners should not to be deterred

by the light-heartedness of the event. Rather, its a chance for them to share their passion for running with others, she said. The coloured powder, approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, is made of corn starch and food colouring. Whats more, every $1 from the registration fee of $50 per participant will be donated to non-profit organisation Project Happy Feet, which helps underprivileged youth and children in developing countries through education-related initiatives and programmes. gcpinto@sph.com.sg

Seoul to get fastest mobile network
SEOUL
SOUTH Koreas largest mobile operator is this week launching what it says is the worlds fastest wireless network. SK Telecom said on Wednesday that the LTE-Advanced network enables downloading of data at speeds twice as fast as those of LTE networks, and 10 times faster than 3G services. With a transfer rate of 150 mbps, the network can download an 800-MB movie in just 43 seconds. The service will initially be available in Seoul and its suburbs. South Korea has witnessed rapid growth of the 4G LTE, or Long Term Evolution, service as the countrys mobile-phone users are quick to adopt faster wireless technology. More than 60 per cent of South Koreas 33 million smartphone users have subscribed to the LTE service. GSA, an association of network suppliers, projected that LTE networks will be available in 87 countries by the end of the year. Along with the launch of the new mobile technology, SK Telecom has begun selling the Galaxy S4 LTE-A smartphone made by Samsung Electronics, which can run on the fastest network. Still, the LTE-Advanced technology has room for improvement. While it boasts the fastest download speed, its upload speed is the same as that of LTE networks, at 37.5 mbps.

Developers warm to Windows 8.1

BY MALATHI NAYAK AND BILL RIGBY

Reuters

This release is driving it forward instead of (just) catching up, and making it work for business and personal use. This is looking really good now.
MR JORGEN NILSSON, A MANAGER AT SOFTWARE FIRM AVEVA

ICROSOFT released a test version of its Windows 8.1 software on Wednesday, bringing back the start button and adding a host of features it hopes will appeal to users, while spurring developers to write more applications for it. The updated Windows is aimed chiefly at appeasing traditional computer users, many of whom were unsettled by Microsofts move towards a new tile-based interface that works best on touch-enabled devices, but left fans of the old-style desktop confused. After looking at user feedback, said chief executive Michael Ballmer, Windows 8.1 will see the reinstatement of the start button, with easier ways to find and access applications, along with a greatly improved search function. Mr Ballmer also promised a rapid release cycle for Windows in the future, abandoning its policy of making new versions of Windows every three years, in an effort to match Apple and Google. The response from the thousands of developers at Microsofts annual developer conference in San Francisco was broadly positive. Of course, theyre playing some catch-up (with Apple and Google). They have been lagging behind for years now, said Mr Jorgen Nilsson, a manager at British-based Aveva, a firm that makes computer-aided-design software applications. But this release is driving it forward instead of (just) catching up, and making it work for business and personal use. This is looking really good now. Part of Microsofts problem has been persuading developers to create apps for Windows 8 and the little-used Windows Phone, given that almost all smartphone and tablet owners are using Apples iOS or Googles Android. Microsoft also said that Facebook has finally agreed to work on an app especially for Windows, which should be available this autumn. That is one factor that might help attract the more than one billion Facebook users to Windows-based tablets. I feel like Microsoft can actually seriously compete in the mobile ecosystem

now, said Mr Manav Mishra, director of engineering at the Barnes & Noble unit that makes apps for its Nook e-reader. But not all developers are convinced that Windows or Windows Phone are worth the trouble, given the massive built-in audience using iPhones, iPads and Android devices. I havent really considered it, no, said Mr Sam Redfern of Psychic Software, maker of the Lets Break Stuff! game, available on Android, iOS and even the BlackBerry PlayBook, when asked about developing for Windows. It never seemed like a particularly worthwhile undertaking, in terms of potential revenue. Mr Markus Persson, developer at Mojang, whose Minecraft Pocket Edition is a top seller on both iOS and Android, agreed, saying that Microsofts market was too tiny. Both Symbian and BlackBerry have more users than Windows Phone. Mr Ballmer said that the Windows Store was approaching 100,000 apps. Apples is nearing one million, with Android not far behind. myp@sph.com.sg

Kwok finds meaning in movie roles

Q&A
Hong Kong superstar AARON KWOK
recent Shanghai Film Festival gets a real break, hell be jet-setting around Asia to promote his upcoming movies, The Monkey King and Silent Witness. He spoke of his plans after this hectic period. Your friend, Charlie Young, made her directorial debut recently with Christmas Rose. When will it be your turn?
In 2008, I met director Roy Chow while filming Murderer and he gave me a lot of pointers, which made me think that, perhaps some day, I could be a director too. But, because of my schedule concert tours, movies, motor racing Im really just too busy (to direct). This year, my focus is on movies. Id really like to do a musical too. Ill just see which opportunity comes up first. But it depends whether my management agrees.

dramas or action movies?

I think one must always try to excel, be it a concert or a movie. (And) I must do something that Ive never done before. The reason I love to do movies is that I can walk in the same footsteps as the characters that I play. Every work to me must be an improvement, because I must always find ways to give meaning to my life. And movies have the ability to do that. myp@sph.com.sg

If you could choose a type of character to portray in a movie, what would it be?
Id like to be a race-car driver or a horse-racing jockey. These are the two hobbies that I enjoy in my free time.

Is there another image of yourself that youd like to show your fans?
As a racer, because racing is also a profession. I rarely have time to do my part for charity, so participating in charity racing events is a good opportunity to do my part to help the needy. In 2000, I set up the Aaron Kwok International Charity Fund to help needy children. I was also appointed Unicef Regional Ambassador for the East Asia and Pacific region in 2011. So no matter how busy work gets, I have this responsibility and I hope to raise more funds for these children. This is also another long-term job that I have.

Therell be no rest for Heavenly King Aaron Kwok this year. Before the 47-year-old singer-actor who recently starred in Christmas Rose and Cold War, and was at the

Will there be a part three to your De Showy Masquerade World Tour concert?
If time allows, yes, I do hope to have another touring concert. Ive already done parts one and two of the tour. I personally feel there can be a conclusion to it.

Move over, women, as more men hog the mirror

SEOUL
MEN ask their wives and girlfriends all sorts of things. The one thing one doesnt hear often is this: Honey, can I borrow your make-up? But, if recent evidence is any indication, it may soon be. In a study of the grooming habits of 1,800 British men aged 18 and over, approximately one in 10 said they wear make-up. Of those, one in five wears make-up every day. Concealer was the most popular make-up item, which 71 per cent of those who wear make-up admitted to using. Other popular make-up items were eyeliner and lip gloss. British men are not alone. Several articles about the growing popularity of make-up among men in South Korea have been published recently. Even South Koreas largest airline, Korean Air, has started providing make-up lessons for its male flight attendants. In fact, men around the globe are spending billions of dollars on everything from cosmetics and make-up to clothing and plastic surgery. In South Korea alone, men are spending over 1 trillion won (S$1.1 billion) on grooming products annually, according to Euromonitor International. It has also been found that some men spend more time each day on personal grooming than women. A 2010 study of British adults grooming habits found that the men surveyed spent 83 minutes a day on personal grooming, including cleansing, toning, moisturising, shaving, choosing clothes and styling hair. In contrast, the women surveyed spent 79 minutes. That means some British men spend four times longer on grooming than they do having sex each week. And, contrary to popular belief, men are just as unhappy with their appearance as women, and in some cases more unhappy, according to recent research.
