Riverfest 5K Run to Benefit the Abbey Rose Foundation

By Lisa Yako Few things in life are more heart-wrenching and painful than losing a child. Yet, even in the most dire of circumstances, goodness often will shine through the darkness. For Suzi and Sam Kudrin, their dark moment came on April 8, 2011 when their 4-month old daughter, Abbey Rose, died. According to Suzi, Abbey was a perfectly healthy baby. Yet, on April 7, 2011 Sam received a phone call from Abbeys babysitter. The babysitter said that when she went to check on Abbey while she was taking a nap, she discovered that Abbey was not breathing. Abbey was rushed to the hospital, and the doctors performed CPR for 90 minutes. Finally, Suzi and Sam were told that there was nothing else to do for Abbey, but then suddenly Abbey had a pulse. She was rushed to Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospital. Over the next 24 hours, Sam, Suzi, and their family held out hope for Abbeys life. Sadly, Abbey passed away while her mom and dad were cuddling her in her blanket, praying with her, telling her about Heaven, and singing You Are My Sunshine . Following Abbeys passing, a fund was set up to help Suzi and Sam pay for Abbeys medical bills and funeral expenses. On the anniversary of Abbeys birthday in 2011, a benefit was held to help Suzi and Sam payoff the remainder of their medical bills and also to raise money to help other families who lost children. Thereafter, Suzi and Sam decided to keep the Abbey Rose Foundation going so they could help more people. Interestingly, Suzi received a book entitled Mommy Please Dont Cry... There Are No Tears In Heaven following Abbeys death. Almost five months passed before Suzi decided to read it. Once I read it, I wanted everyone to read it. I passed it around to all of my friends and relatives. Suzi explained. She started getting requests from friends and family who knew someone who had lost had child and felt they could benefit from the book. Before we knew it, we were sending books all over the United States. To this day we have sent almost 200 books and letters out to families. And

when we hear back from a family who received a book its such an incredible feeling to know that we could help even just a little. We let them know in the letter that God is with them always and to keep their faith strong. Thats the only way we got through such a tragedy. stated Suzi. Besides the books, the Abbey Rose Foundation uses money to donate clothes to Rainbow Babies & Childrens Hospital so families have access to outfits after a child has passed away. They have also worked with Cornerstone of Hope, a center for grieving children, teens, and adults that provides counseling to help deal with the loss of a loved one. Additionally, the foundation has paid for a handful of people to become certified in infant CPR. Besides the good that the foundation has done for others, it has also provided some healing for Suzi and Sam. We know that God had it in his plans for us to help others who have lost a child. We are both very strong in our faith and this whole situation, losing Abbey and starting this foundation, has made our faith stronger. Weve been able to help others by telling our story and have been helped by others telling their stories. To continue their good work, funding for the Abbey Rose Foundation is always needed. This year, proceeds from the Riverfest 5K run will benefit the foundation. This Abbey Rose Foundation was suggested as the recipient by committee member, Bill Scott, who is also Suzis uncle. The 5K race, which is co-sponsored by Anytime Fitness and Family Eye Care Centers, will take place on Saturday, July 13 at 8:00 AM with registration beginning at 7:00 AM. A 1K run fun will begin at approximately 9:00 AM. In addition to benefitting from the 5K run, the Abbey Rose Foundation will be hosting a day with the Cleveland Indians on Sunday, July 14. The foundation will receive $5 per ticket sold through the foundation. Anyone who purchases a ticket through the foundation will have the opportunity to participate in a pre-game parade around the field and will receive a free Cleveland Indians/Abbey Rose stadium cup. In addition, children will have the opportunity to run the bases after the game. Abbeys father,

Sam, will have the honor of throwing out the first pitch. Tickets are $21 a piece and can be purchased by e-mailing abbeyrosefoundation@gmail.com. For Suzi and Sam, their work with the Abbey Rose Foundation will never completely fill the void in their hearts left by Abbeys death. Yet, they are able to find some solace in the fact that they are helping others deal with similar situations. Abbey touched so many lives on her short journey to Earth, and we can only hope that we are continuing to touch lives of others. declared Suzi and Sam. Calendar Project to Benefit Non-Profits

The Vermilion Chamber of Commerce believes in giving back to the community and its members. The Chambers newest project, a 12 month 2014 calendar titled Vermilion Exposed will feature lo-cal businesses. Proceeds from the project will go to Vermilion area non-profit organizations. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of a Talent Show that will be hosted by the Vermilion YMCA in Feb-ruary of 2014. The Teen Leadership Group of the YMCA will stage the show. Twenty five Vermilion area non-profit organizations will compete for the top monetary prizes by presenting a two minute talent. A panel of five judges will decide the winners. The Chambers goal is to make this Calendar a perpetual project with a different theme each year. This years theme is based on the 2003 film comedy Calendar Girls and the purchase price of the calendar is only $10 each. Photos of business owners will be taken in their business and will be a classy rendi-tion of the movie. Another objective is for the Calendar to raise enough money to create a scholarship fund to be awarded in future years to a Vermilion High School student each year. The Calendar Committee is getting creative to raise money. Funds will be raised by; the sale of month-ly business sponsorships, the sale of individual dates to the public for birthdays, anniversaries, etc.; sale of the Talent Show tickets, and the sale of the individual calendars. The Calendar Committee consists of: Karen Miller of Vermilion Online News, Sandy Grisel of the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce, Louise Woehrle of Harbour Town Realty, Inc., Cindy Akers of Vermilion Local Schools, Carolyn Darrow of Kingston Residence, Cathy Norcross of Mercy, Leona Phillips of Arctic Heating & Cooling, Betsy Wakefield, and Tim Goebel of the YMCA. For more in-formation you may contact any of the committee members or any Director on the Board of the Vermil-ion Chamber of Commerce.
