With rising raw material costs and energy prices top of
the agenda for everyone, especially those involved in
manufacturing, the more you can bring in house with less
reliance on price hikes from external suppliers, the better
the cost control. Kestrel, the no lead, no tin, 100% calcium
organic stabilised PVC-UE building materials supplier,
recognised this over a decade ago and is now in the strong
position to offer customers the benefits of the substantial
capacity enhancements it made 10 years ago.

to bring a new dimension to the use of profiled cladding. Available in
aluminium or steel, as well as zinc and copper, the new profiles can be
produced in almost any combination of corrugated, trapezoidal or zig-
zag shapes, and in addition can be perforated or embossed to provide
almost limitless variations in shape and form. The new profiles are
particularly suited to architectural features on roofs, walls or even floors,
as well as pillars and other items. Standard thicknesses range form
0.7mm to 1.5mm, and profiles are available in the full range of PVDF
colours as well as plain mill. With custom shapes, sizes and colours also
available, the only limit is the imagination of the designer.

smarts mc wall passes cwct standard
The team at Smarts has announced the successful testing of
their MC Wall curtain wall to CWCT standard. The rigorous testing
took place at the Taylor Woodrow Technology Centre in Leighton
Buzzard under the strict guidance of CWCT University of Bath. MC
Wall achieved an excellent performance, making it suitable for the
most extreme exposure categories in the UK. The CWCT standard
for Systemised Building Envelopes is widely regarded as the
benchmark certification for ventilated facades; the standard has
been updated to include the stipulations of European EN Curtain
Walling standards, and now all test requirements are at least
equal to the European standards, and several even surpass those
standards; a example being the water penetration tests.

The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) has recently launched
a new report titled Aluminium & Sustainability - A Cradle to Cradle
Approach. The report is the first to be written for the construction
industry following aluminium from its raw material Bauxite through use
in completed projects to end-of-life recycling. It covers modern methods
of production and recycling explaining the extent to which the global
aluminium industry has improved production efficiency since its first
commercial production in the late 1880s.
The report was presented to the press at RIBA HQ in London early in
October. CAB has worked closely with the International Aluminium
Institute (IAI) and the European Aluminium Association (EAA) to
substantiate the contents of the report which is now freely available in
hardcopy and can be downloaded at www.c-a-b.org.uk. CAB is available
to offer guidance to specifiers on the use of sustainable aluminium in

Sadolin has taken a groundbreaking lead in the woodcare and decorative coatings market by reducing its carbon footprint through offsetting. Now the
woodcare brand is extending the reach of the environmental projects it will support in future to include embryonic renewable industries around the
world.
Over the past six years, every tonne of CO2 generated by the manufacturing and transportation of Sadolins woodcare products has been accounted
for, and has been neutralised through the brands support for carbon reduction projects. This has been achieved by working in partnership with one
of the worlds leading carbon offset and climate consulting businesses, The CarbonNeutral Company. Sadolin has renewed its commitment to this
successful partnership and agreed to broaden the range of projects that will benefit as a result of its carbon management programme.
Julie Olsson, Marketing Manager for the woodcare brand explains: Sadolin was the very first home improvement brand to work with The
CarbonNeutral Company to offset its carbon emissions from manufacturing and transportation. At the beginning of our CarbonNeutral programme
we focused all our support on the plantation of new trees in managed forests - a highly appropriate initiative for Sadolin as the brand has always been
synonymous with the enhancement, protection and preservation of wood.
However the carbon management agenda has advanced considerably in recent years and The CarbonNeutral Company now provides opportunities for
partners to support a wide range of exciting and much needed renewable energy projects all across the world. Im delighted to say that, in future, in
addition to supporting forestry initiatives, Sadolins carbon offsets will also include a waste heat recovery project in Kotmar in India and wind power
projects in Sebenoba and Karakurt in Turkey.
Julie concludes: At Sadolin we take our environmental responsibilities extremely seriously and we know that these same concerns are becoming more
and more pressing for our customers. Now they can choose Sadolin with more confidence and reassurance than ever in the knowledge that they are
making a small but very valuable contribution towards the establishment of sustainable renewable energy industries, which can only have a positive
impact on the environment in the long term.
Sue Welland, Founder & Creative Director of The CarbonNeutral Company, agrees: Were delighted to have renewed this relationship. Sadolin is taking
a responsible and active approach to sustainability and at the same time helping to educate its customers about global warming. All those who specify,
stock or purchase Sadolin products can be satisfied that the CO2 emissions associated with this leading woodcare range have been measured and are
being reduced to net zero though high quality, climate friendly projects.

Windmill View in Illingworth, West Yorkshire is a development
of 82 two, three and four bedroom properties completed by
Bramall Construction in partnership with Synergy, Pennine
Housing 2000 and the Housing Corporation. Two of those
properties are rather special indeed a landmark in the quest
for energy saving for they are the first houses in the country
to be designed and built to the Sustainable Code Level 4
recently established by the Government as a eco-target for
new homes.
The stringent requirements of Level 4 have been met by
utilising a number of different systems including solar panels,
300mm fully filled cavity walls, and improved U values on
glazing, doors and loft space. The piece de resistance, however,
is the installation of NIBE Heat Pumps designed to convert air
that would otherwise be expelled in the normal ventilation
process into energy for domestic hot water and central
heating.
The NIBE Fighter 360P units take air at ceiling level that has
been warmed by the heating system, appliances within the
home and residents body heat, extracts the energy via a
heat exchanger located in the heat pump circuit and expels
it into the outside atmosphere at very close to zero degrees
Centigrade. The recovered heat is passed by way of an indirect
heating surface to a hot water tank, double-jacketed so that
domestic hot water and radiators can be heated at the same
time.
If the system sounds complicated, the result is not. Ventilation
is a necessity for both health and comfort but by definition
it normally released a great deal of carefully generated heat.
Using an exhaust air heat pump virtually all that heat is
recovered and reused.
The householder saves money on fuel bills and the
environment benefits through energy saving and sharply
reduced carbon emissions. In the two houses in Windmill View
the heat pumps are used in parallel with solar generated heat
and, linked with superior insulation methods, they promise
to provide an exceedingly effective, energy efficient heating
system.

NIBE ExHAuST AIR HEAT PuMPS HELP
MEET NEW ECO-TARgETS
10 Review Review 11
Constantly rising energy prices and increasingly stringent statutory requirements
are sharpening the awareness of building contractors, specifiers, building owners
and building occupants about the energy efficiency of buildings. The European
Commissions EU Action Plan states the greatest potential savings (27 30% by
the year 2020) are in existing buildings. Numerous factors contribute to energy
efficiency, including:
Thermalinsulation
Productionof heating and cooling energyappropriate to needs
Efficientuse of free heating (solar and ground source, for example)and cooling (suchas
ventilation and nighttime cooling)
Efficientenergydistributionthroughthe building withminimumloss
Using regenerative energiesand attaining the highestpossible efficiencyinuse of fossil
fuels
Optimaladjustmentof existentheating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC)
installations
Reducing the electricityconsumed byHVAC systemcomponents(pumps,fansetc.)
Control technology is essential, directly or indirectly, in meeting all these aims. The
goal is to achieve optimum comfort from minimum energy. Obviously, building
users can use a Building Management System (BMS) with a user interface such as
ARENA from CentraLine (from Honeywell) to prepare daily and weekly schedules
of rooms and building areas in use, to avoid energy wastage. But the BMS can do
much more to address the other factors listed above.
Potential savings can be assessed by Data on consumption and other parameters
can be collected and analysed to make decisions based on facts. Assessors can
be locally or remotely based. The BMS can evaluate the data itself, or it can be
analysed by a specialized energy management system. Optimization, if considered
worthwhile, can be directly implemented in the BMS. The results of these actions
can by checked by the BMS, which can collect and analyze data and compare it with
previous values. Building managers should always consider allowing remote access
to the BMS by a service contractor, such as a CentraLine Partner.
Central building
management by
specialized service
partners enables constant
remote optimization of
a building systems and
energy requirements.
The potential savings are
enormous.
Data can be viewed and
analyzed from different
sites, for comparison. A
BMS such as ARENA not only allows remote data acquisition, but also access to
the control of every plant component, from boilers to room controllers, provided
corresponding authorization is given. Partners can adapt program settings or
control parameters to changing circumstances while the system is in operation,
without visiting the site. The Partner will also identify problems with the HVAC
system, then take immediate remedial action (remotely or by visiting the site) so
they are usually solved before building occupiers become aware of a problem.

easyflush perfect for the clements
One of the excellent, WRAS Approved water management products developed
by Cistermiser is the hands-free Easyflush. A single infrared sensor operates
the dual-flush WC valve, making
the Easyflush a user friendly,
hygienic system ideally suited
for domestic use, especially with
elderly and less able people. One
family that is extremely pleased
with the new hands-free flush
system is Mr. and Mrs. Clements
and their seventeen-year old son
Jack who live in Epping. Jack is
severely autistic and several flushing handles and buttons had come to grief in
the Clements household. That problem is gone ,for Jack finds the Easyflush with
its fast response time easy and even fun to use, while his mother is delighted
that repairs and replacements are things of the past, family hygiene assured and
water economy greatly improved.

honeywell controllers can cut death toll from co poisoning
New central heating controllers from Honeywell can cut the annual death toll due to
carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from central heating systems. CO is invisible and has no
smell, but can kill quickly. It can build up because a central heating boiler is faulty, a flue
is leaky or blocked, or when ventilation is
inadequate. Landlords can ensure tenants
take action to service their heating systems
with the versatile Honeywell ST9100S
and ST9400S heating controllers, which
include a comprehensive Service Interval
Function with unique features. The landlord
or heating contractor can set when the
heating system requires servicing, plus an
advance warning period during which the
display flashes a reminder of the service deadline. There are also several options for how the
controller will operate if the deadline passes without a service taking place. The controllers
also make it easy for tenants to operate their heating systems to provide comfort with energy
efficiency.

gOINg gREEN
by sarah chiappi, corporate account manager, amx (uK) ltd.
With green issues increasing in importance for building
owners, it is important to highlight what a green
building is, compared with an intelligent building, and
how the two can complement each other.
For many years, building functions have been
streamlined through integrated building services on
an open control platform such as
the LonWorks Technology, allowing
systems to communicate with each
other.
This communication allows the
building to run more efficiently
and reports problems, as well as
offer significant savings in the
initial installation. This is what is
typically described as an intelligent
building.
A green building on the other
hand is one that not only manages
its power consumption, water
consumption and CO2 emissions in
order to reduce them, but also uses
environmentally friendly materials from the outset, and
makes the most of its natural assets.
A green building will typically rely on intelligent
systems to harvest daylight during peak hours and only
bring artificial lighting systems on when and where
required. This power management can allow companies
to make significant energy savings, support load
shedding and lead to rebates from utilities suppliers.
Shutting down devices when they are not required
and ensuring energy is only consumed when required
by a user is all very good in practice, but how many
companies really do this?
We all know we should turn the lights off when we
leave a room, but few of us will also
turn the TV from standby to off. Few
people regulate the temperature in
their office.
Yet these simple acts can save
thousands of pounds a year. Looking
out over London at night, it amazes
me how well lit the City skyline is,
not just by exterior lighting but by
lights left on in offices.
So what is the ideal scenario for
a company looking to reduce
costs, run its buildings efficiently
and maximize its green status? A
building needs the infrastructure
to support the management of
all its systems remotely or from a single location, as
otherwise facilities managers or maintenance personnel
will expend a lot of their own energy trying to keep
everything running!
It should also connect all the systems within a
building: lighting, HVAC and other building services,
the IT network and audio visual systems. In addition
there needs to be a management platform providing
easy access to all of these systems and devices for
monitoring and control. This fully integrated and
managed LonWorks solution allows you to run your
building more efficiently.
Intelligent sensors recognize when zones or rooms
are not in use and adjust the lighting and heating
appropriately, projectors and meeting room equipment
are switched off when not in use, and surplus
networked devices are turned off out of hours. The
LonWorks integrated system has the intelligence to
recognize when a zone is being used out of hours
and keep devices powered up for practical as well as
security reasons, and can also allow whole areas of
integrated devices to be shut down at night.
Intelligent and green building solutions are available
today.
Open systems devices are available from multiple
manufacturers to allow building owners to select
the best of breed products for each of their building
subsystems. Integrators are available to install
and commission systems and streamline product
interoperability to maximize energy savings and facility
usage.
Details of partners for intelligent and green solutions
can be found at www.lonmark.org.uk.

SELECTAgLAzE - STYLISH SECONDARY WINDOWS
IMPROvE THE BuILDINg ENvIRONMENT
Secondary windows are separate tailor-made units fitted to the inside (room
side) of existing windows to form double windows or double glazing. The
original windows remain unaltered and, in most cases blinds or drapes are
unaffected.
Secondary windows provide the most effective noise insulation.
Selectaglazes fully tested products can achieve sound reductions in excess
of 45dB leading to major improvements in living or working environments
even in the noisiest locations. Secondary windows also have high
performance seals to combat drafts and the additional pane of glass traps an
insulating layer of air reducing heat loss by 50%. If specialist low emissivity
glass is specified the insulation levels will exceed Part L of the Building
Regulations requirements. Secondary windows provide an additional secure
barrier both against intruders and the effects of blast.
Selectaglaze products have been extensively
tested and are accredited to Secure by
Design. A high security range, listed in The
Red Book produced by the Loss Prevention
Certification Board, is used in a wide range of
secure environments and offers an effective
alternative to bars or grilles. Selectaglazes
secondary glazing is used in almost any type
of building in need of a thermal upgrade or
protection against noise. Specific
environmental and security controls
can also be provided for a range of
applications including laboratories,
museums, recording studios,
clean rooms and control rooms.
Selectaglazes secondary windows are
designed to maintain the character of
the property and are accepted by all
Heritage bodies.
Frames have a permanent, easily
maintained finish usually white but
a wide choice of colour options together with a selection of timber-grained
finishes are available to suit almost any dcor. The ability to shape and curve
frames and discrete installation ensures sympathetic treatment.

Dual Seal Glass has supplied a bespoke architectural glazing
solution for the new 14 million Creative Arts Building at the
University of Huddersfield and helped architects at Darnton
Elgee to deliver their vision of a sustainable, low energy, low
carbon facility with a stunning futuristic appearance.
The Huddersfield manufacturer, one of the countrys
leading independent processors of architectural glass, was
commissioned by fenestration contractor Dortech and the
main contractors HBG Construction Ltd to supply specially
customised structural silicone glazed units for the building,
to meet the architects demanding thermal, acoustic and
photometric specifications.
Dortech installed Dual Seals high performance vision and
insulated spandrel panels in conjunction with a flush fitting
Schco FW60 glazing system to create an imposing sleek
glass faade to the main elevation of the building.
Dual Seal is one of just four UK companies licensed to
manufacture and promote the silicone units used with
Schcos advanced structural glazing systems.
Being totally independent, with the ability to process glass
from any major glass manufacturer, it was able to design and
supply bespoke units for this project combining the most
appropriate types of specialist float glass available. In order
to achieve a seamless appearance without any visible banding
on the sweeping faade of the new University building, Dual
Seals vision glass units and spandrel panels featured exactly
the same outer leaf.
6mm Dualtherm Stopsol Super Silver Grey heat reflective
glass was used to reduce the solar heat gain in the building
and deliver the required mirror like appearance. For the
inner leaf of the vision glass units, 10mm Planitherm low
emissivity glass was used to provide a high level of thermal
insulation. The unit also delivered the necessary acoustic
insulation required of a building housing a state of the art
music centre incorporating practice and rehearsal rooms,
recording studios and a theatre space. 6mm DualSpan
Ceramic Panels in Graphite were used to create the inner leaf
of the spandrel units with 60mm thermal insulation applied
to deliver the low U-values required.
Dortech Operations Director Dean Wood said that there
were three key reasons why the fenestration company had
chosen to source their specialist glazing units for the Creative
Arts Building from Dual Seal: Dual Seal is one of very few
companies to have been awarded the all-important licence to
produce silicone units for the Schco SG toggle system and
the manufacturing team have already been through
the learning curve, he explained.
This was the first time Dortech has created a faade
using this particular structural glazing system so their
technical support and assistance was invaluable.
Secondly, we had to have absolute confidence in the
performance and quality of the units we were using.
Dual Seals independence allowed them to source the
very best glass from a range of manufacturers, to
create units which were perfectly tailored to meet the
architectural brief. From a quality point of view, having
worked with the company for many, many years, we
know that they are totally committed to achieving a
first class product and they have never let us down.
The third and most important factor is the way we are
treated by Dual Seal, said Dean.
The companys customer service is second to none. Whilst the
business has grown significantly in recent years, it has never
lost its strong customer focus, never become bureaucratic,
and in our experience has never walked away from a problem.
With other suppliers, youre just a customer, but with Dual
Seal youre a true partner. The University of Huddersfields
new Creative Arts facility is now complete and ready to
welcome its first intake of students.

LIgHTENINg uP THE WORLD
Glazing Vision, the original frameless glass rooflight
manufacturer, has long enjoyed an enviable reputation
amongst the UK market for its innovative and luxurious
rooflight solutions but their name, and perhaps more
importantly their products, are becoming more sought
by architects and specifiers far from our shores. The
company have recently completed a project in the
world-renowned ski resort of Chamonix where a sloped
sliding over roof rooflight was installed atop a 5-storey
apartment complex situated in the centre of the town.
The Cosmos retracts in one-panel onto the roof
creating a 100% clear opening and all the glass used
is flush to allow water (and there is a lot of melting
snow) to run off and has the additional benefit of easy
cleaning. The unit was comprised of a 46.3mm Double
Glazed Unit 21.5mm Clear Toughened Heat Soaked
Outer, 14mm Black Silicone Sealed Spacer Bar, 10.8mm
Clear Laminated Low-E Inner to cope with the harsh
conditions.
At the other end of the temperature scale is Kuwait
where the company have been involved in projects
predominately using rooflights from their Flushglaze
suite including the highly innovative 43.5mm Walk On
rooflight which is a double glazed unit comprised of
21.5mm clear toughened laminated outer pane, a16mm
airspace and a 6mm clear toughened low E inner pane.
They have also engineered and supplied to Kuwait a flat
bi-parting sliding over fixed rooflight that was supplied
in four sections and which, when assembled allows the
two inner panes to slide over the fixed outer panes to
create a 50% clear opening. All Glazing Vision units
are designed, engineered and manufactured at the
companys own production plant in Brandon, Suffolk
and each is pre-assembled and tested prior to being
shipped to any global destination.
Strong design skills based on solid engineering and
manufacturing principles has ensured that Glazing
Vision have both the capability and capacity to expand
their international profile whilst continuing to deliver
unrivalled customer service to their domestic market.
Speaking about the companys global ambitions, their
Sales & Marketing Director Jon Shooter was incredibly
enthusiastic about the opportunities for developing new
markets and assured his team that this was in no way
connected to the air miles points he has been racking
up!!

Glass rainscreen facades are taking new and exciting forms
thanks to SFS intecs innovative ALW fixing system. The system
is allowing architects across Europe to think differently
about cold faade applications such as rainscreens, stairwells,
lift shafts, sun-protection screens, multi-storey car parks
and safety screens. Using SFS intecs ALW clamping system
eliminates the need to drill the glass. Glass panes are simply
slotted into the single or double ALW clamps, which can be
RAL colour matched or anodised, then tightened to secure.
The result is a sleek, shingled-faade with minimal glass pane
overlap.
As well as accommodating stylish designs, the fixing
system combines functionality with longevity, safety and
security. ALW clamps have been tested thoroughly to ensure
compliance with structural safety requirements and offer
a high degree of resistance to corrosion. Fixing clamps
accommodate single and laminated glass thicknesses from
8mm to 18mm, including polycarbonates. ALW is part of SFS
intecs glass fixing systems range which also includes raised,
bevel and flush point fixings. These can be combined with its
spider fixings and special products for balustrades, as well as
an easy to specify solution for glass canopies.

TIME COST CONSCIOuS COMAR
As a leading British firm with systems designed for the British commercial
fenestration market, Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems has been in business
for thirty years. Comar is 100% British and privately owned meaning that Comar
face the same constraints and worries as their approved fabricator network in the
current prevailing economic climate.
However, Comar are enjoying unprecedented success and having survived several
UK recessions, here, Comar talk about how their systems and business practices
are securing record levels of work for their approved fabricator network.
Anyone with experience of British construction knows the time delays that can
happen through the construction process. Once a material order is placed the
client/contractor wants to be on-site yesterday.
How do sub-contractors deal with this? Costs associated with time are rarely
quantified in a busy business, dealing with poor suppliers who have unreliable
lead times becomes part of then norm and these subsequent costs are swallowed
as day-to-day running costs.
Companies will invest in machine tools to minimise production costs, but rarely
look at the efficiency of their suppliers as this involves the short-term pain of
changing over to a new unknown, supplier. Some fabricators look at putting
profiles in stock to overcome these issues, however, this can tie up valuable
liquidity. Liquidity and cash flow is an especially pertinent issue with banks loan
options now being reduced, therefore finding a reliable supplier to maximise
profitability is the cornerstone of Comar and its approved fabricators operations.
This means that Comar projects offer speed and cost efficiency to the client/
contractor and record sales prove this.
If, out of the blue, your business has to wait 4-6 weeks for materials and
accessories, you and your business will have to wait an extra 4-6 weeks before
you can get paid from the contractor/client and your production schedule for
secured works can literally go out of the window.
This can also impact on manpower hours: overtime might need to be paid to hit a
site deadline, which obviously erodes your profit margin. Bad suppliers can result
in fabricators being busy fools, with little margin from the originally profitable
project. Comar invest in stock so that their fabricators dont have to, thus freeing
up valuable financial resources. For polyester powder coating and dual colour
Comar have invested in another facility next door to the industry renowned Barley
Chalu, ensuring coating commences as soon as the order arrives. Here stocks of
mill finish ready to be powder coated speed up coating lead-times to the best in
the aluminium industry.
Comar carry most profiles in a standard white finish at their head offices so white
materials can be delivered to fabricators on their next weekly delivery. As Comar
own and control their own logistics fleet, this means that fabricators who have
large orders can rely on flexibility of delivery when demanded. Intrinsically, all
Comar systems are multi-function profiles and accessories: profiles have been
designed so they can be used in a variety of systems and applications. This means
fabricator knowledge of the profile range is quickly assimilated and wastage is
reduced because profiles can be used on the next project.
Many firms are now opting for CNC machines, which are an excellent time
saving, thus cost saving, production tool. However, the set-up time for medium
projects can be time consuming, and errors can be costly, therefore most Comar
fabricators have the flexibility of Comars punch tooling.
This comprehensive punch tooling suite provides quality preparations for all of
our Comars system and due to the low set-up time in some instances are quicker
than CNCs. The quality of the precision punches that Comars tooling create,
means that wastage due to error is minimised, optimising materials usage and
profitability.
In summary Comar is British by Design. This not only means aluminium facades
for curtain walling, windows, doors and ground floor treatment that provide
longevity and legacy it means a British designed infrastructure to deliver to the
uniquely demanding, time-critical British construction market.

EshaTherm insulation and 13 rooflights for a roofing refurbishment
project for the Charles Wilson building at the University of Leicester. The
Universitys Estates Office selected a system from Esha UK as it was eco
friendly, high specification, value for money and supported by a 20 year
labour and materials guarantee. Esha Universal is a single layer, POCB
(Polyolefin Copolymer Bitumen Binder) roofing membrane that offers the
low temperature performance of SBS membranes combined with the high
end performance of APP membranes. With a thickness of just 3.1mm and
a reinforced P.E.T. glass/ polyester fleece, Esha Universal is manufactured
in an attractive sustainable self-finish and retains its appearance due to its
non-susceptibility to weathering. A watertight bond is maintained for the
lifetime of the roof at which point Esha Universal can be fully recycled.

green roofs and faades
Cityroofs solutions transform living space on podiums, balconies
and terraces. Using Aquadyne technology, green roofs and
facades are created using panels manufactured entirely from
recycled plastic. The Aquadyne sheet acts as wick, water store
and diffuser, primarily to assist with storm attenuation drainage.
Its properties enable plants to be grown, fed and irrigated, the
soil-less structure creating herbaceous growth without the risk
of soil slippage. Dense, evergreen, self-seeding, non-invasive
varieties with creeping root structures such as birds foot trefoil
or rupturewort require little more than annual inspection. Whilst
independent tests have shown that 22 sq m of Aquadyne will save
approximately 1 tonne of CO2, it is also extremely lightweight
when saturated.

gutter joints stand the test of time.
Dales report that, having been in the metal gutter manufacturing
business for over 30 years, they have seen virtually no joint failures on
their gutter connections since the introduction of low modulus silicone
as the ultimate sealant in the mid eighties. The company considers
silicones reliability has proved the perfect match for the Dales overstrap
gutter connection that was introduced back in the seventies. Unlike
most gutter joints, that use silicone or rubber sandwiched between two
metal surfaces, the overstrap is applied externally but in a manner that
is unobtrusive and has no bolt piercings or gaps. The straps are secured
in place by a hook over front and bolts to the rear top edge with fine
manufacturing tolerances ensuring a close metal to metal fit with the
all important low modulus silicone being applied once the gutter run is
securely in position. Dales have seen the effects of expansion and fixing
issues associated with some compressed and bolted joints provided by
other manufacturers with the attendant leakage and expansion issues
that often occur.

tor coatings for topshop!
The refurbishment of the roof of a large retail property in Bromley, Kent has involved
the use of Tor Coatings Elastaseal waterproof coating system.
The existing asphalt roof membrane had failed and water infiltration was becoming
a major problem. Stripping and replacing the asphalt would be both costly and
extremely complex with large amounts of detailed areas making repairs potentially
difficult.
Such an overhaul would also involve hot works, which would inevitably result in
temporary closure of the unit; this was not an option on a busy high street site.
Elastaseal from Tor Coatings was chosen as the most suitable solution from a number
of options.
This cold applied system comprises two layers of high performance coatings
sandwiched with a fiberglass mat for additional reinforcement. The Elastaseal coating
is applied just like a regular paint and offers the significant advantages of no on site
mixing and no need for naked flames as with comparable hot work bitumen roofing
systems. After the roof was cleaned, a fast drying adhesion-promoting primer was
applied.
A second coat, whilst still wet was then embedded with a chopped strand fibre
matting, which dries to a flexible surface with a very high tensile strength gained from
the reinforcement mat.
The finishing coat was then applied and allowed to cure. All coatings were applied
with brush or roller, allowing the materials to be simply applied around all of the
difficult areas in a continuous film. This prevents any potential future leakage
problems from the joints.

25 YEAR PARTNERSHIP uNDERPINS uKS CERAMIC gRANITE RAINSCREEN REvOLuTION
ThisautumnLancashire manufacturer and distributor Shackerley
(Holdings)Group Limited iscelebrating a remarkable 25-year
businesspartnership withMirage S.p.A.,the worldslargestproducer
of large formatunglazed ceramicfloor and wallcoverings, based in
Pavullo nelFrignano,Modena,Italy.
This 25 year relationship has underpinned the successful development
of the UK market for ceramic granite ventilated rainscreen systems,
which has had a major influence on the way British architects
enhance the exterior appearance of buildings, provide thermal and
acoustic insulation and protect the outer envelope from the elements.
Shackerleys partnership with Mirage originally centred on floor and
wall tiling solutions for demanding heavy traffic locations such as
airports, railway stations and shopping centres. However, it took a very
different turn as a result of advances in manufacturing technology
which enabled Mirage to perfect the process of creating dimensionally
accurate ceramic granite slabs in unusually large formats, up to 1250x
1750mm.
These slabs were impermeable (Class B1A), exceptionally strong and
hardwearing, and ideal for use in exterior cladding applications, being
relatively thin and lightweight compared with natural quarried stone.
Shackerley was determined to introduce these slabs as potential
facade panels to the architectural community in the UK and to
overcome the prevailing perception in Britain that ceramic cladding
belonged indoors: an understandable reaction to a number of high
profile mortar and adhesive system failures on the outside of buildings
in the 1970s.
Shackerleys answer was to develop and patent Sureclad, a
mechanically fixed ceramic granite ventilated rainscreen cladding
system, which not only went on to capture the interest and
confidence of Shackerleys architectural audience but also earned the
company its second Queens Award for Enterprise in the Innovation
category. Today Shackerley has exclusive rights to distribute Mirages
large format ceramic granite rainscreen faade panels in the UK and
Ireland. Offered as part of its extensive portfolio of ceramic granite
rainscreen solutions the panels are imported from Italy, prefabricated
at the companys Lancashire factories and supplied ready for fast-
track installations on new build and refurb projects.
Shackerley has supplied Mirage ceramic granite for numerous
high profile developments including the impressive Sage plc HQ
in Gateshead, Dakotas stunning hotel in Queensferry, Swansea
Universitys unique Digital Technium Building and the Paragon Centre
in Brentford. Paragon represents one of the largest ceramic granite
rainscreen projects ever completed in this country. The project is clad
with Sureclad ventilated facades, with over 9000m2 of prefabricated
Mirage ceramic granite faade panels, onto six buildings, one of which
was the highest prefabricated tower ever built in the UK.
Brian Newell, founder and Chairman of Shackerley (Holdings) Group
Limited said: For a quarter of a century Shackerley and Mirage have
worked together to bring the many benefits of ceramic granite to the
attention of UK architects, contractors and their clients, first in floor
and wall tile format and now as ventilated cladding faades.
He said: Mirage put its trust in Shackerley and we have helped the
company to establish itself in the UK and Irish markets as the premier
manufacturer of this remarkable material. We in turn have invested
enormously in our prefabrication facilities to provide a complete
system, ready to install, which has made us market leaders for
ventilated ceramic facades.

hats off says bonnet for hanson thin joint system
When Bonnet Homes Ltd decided to build three new luxury bungalows on a plot of land in
Snodland, Kent, Thermalite products from Hanson Building Products were specified to meet
all environmental legislation and provide speed of construction. The detached properties
are being constructed using Thermalite aircrete blocks for the foundations, floors and walls.
Bonnet Homes is using the Thin Joint Mortar system for the first time. The Thin Layer Mortar
is a cement-based product that is pre-mixed to only require water for ready application.
Thermalite blocks built with the mortar offer stability within 60 minutes, enabling the amount
of walling that can be built to be increased. In turn, this speeds up the build process and as
a consequence, brings forward the first fix stage. It also has the added benefit of reducing
the amount of mortar required for any given area of wall by at least 70% over conventional
mortar, thus affecting tighter U values as heat loss through the mortar joints is reduced.

WHITE STAR HOuSE uSES DISTINCTIvE
PERfORATED CLADDINg fROM RMIg
More than 1.3 square kilometres of precision perforated aluminium from RMIG
Group has been used to provide a distinctive decorative cladding solution
to White Star House, the fourth building to be constructed as part of the
prestigious Northern Ireland Science Park (NISP) development at Queens Island
in Belfast.
Designed by international architectural and engineering consultants, the Scott
Wilson Group, the four-storey White Star House provides 40,000 square feet
of flexible workspace to service Northern Irelands growing ICT, life science,
engineering and biotech sectors.
Located within the 185 acre Titanic Quarter site, the building also meets the
requirements of The Carbon Trusts Low Carbon Design initiative. The buildings
design blends structural and architectural innovation with a clear recognition
of the sites historic location and heritage in ship building. In addition to using
perforated aluminum from RMIG to give an engineered and technological
influenced exterior, other innovations, such as ground water extraction have
been incorporated in the design which reflect the function of the building as a
centre for innovation.
The structure is heavily influenced by shipbuilding in a number of ways. Three
exposed prow-shaped support pillars, which are exactly the same height as that
of the Titanic above the waterline, are used to frame the main entrance. Also,
the overall form of the building echoes that of a shipyard gantry, under which
the liners were built. The building is situated beside Thompson Dock, which
was the last place that the Titanic was berthed before leaving Belfast. The
3.0mm thick aluminium cladding was supplied by RMIG, pre-finished to site in
42 different panel sizes, which were secured to a steel framework to provide a
highly original aesthetic exterior finish.
Also, each panel incorporates hundreds of 10mm square perforations which act
as highly effective light diffusers for when the building is lit at night with low
level lighting to act as a landmark and beacon for people arriving in Belfast by
air and sea.
Mervyn Kirk, UK Business Development Manager with RMIGs Architectural
Division, explained: White Star House incorporates an immense amount of
new technology, which is in keeping with its role and position within Northern
Irelands newest and innovative science park and were delighted that our
products have been used to enhance the exterior appeal of this unique
structure.
He added: Our architectural products are being used widely to meet a range
of different design specification and project requirements particularly where
the designer, contractor and client are seeking a high degree of individuality or
where perforated metal provides an ideal solution to a specific problem.

invisible fix once applied, it ensured that once the 4,000 square metres of
Rainscreen panels were installed upon the building during its 16 million
refurbishment and transformation from offices to residential apartments,
nothing would encroach upon the claddings appearance.
To make sure that it stood out along the skyline a cladding featured
an Italian Walnut finish was specified. This provided a strong contrast
against the buildings existing white cladding. Specialist contractor, MPG
Contracts, recommended that Sikas SikaTack would provide a far superior
finish as, unlike traditional Rainscreen cladding fixing techniques, it
would leave no unsightly fixings visible that would tarnish the faades
overall look. With SikaTack approved by the British Board of Agrment
and accredited by the highest standard of quality assurance, ISO 9001/
EN29001 it was guaranteed a secret fix that was fully proven to deliver
the highest standards.
Requiring no screws or brackets, SikaTack utilises elastic bonding
technology to fix panels to the structure. A carrier frame fitted upon the
building is first cleansed using Sika Cleaner 205. These and the Rainscreen
panels are then primed by SikaTack Panel Primer. A temporary support
is created using special 3mm thick black double-sided tape to hold the
panels during the bonding process. Once a SikaTack Panel Adhesive is
applied the panels are then fitted immediately into position. Once set the
cladding remains firmly bonded to the structure.

precast concrete delivers stonewall green promise
The most common form of wall construction utilising reconstructed stone pre-cast cladding,
as manufactured by Trent Concrete, has achieved a B rating in the 2008 BRE Green Guide to
Specification. This rating underlines the inherent sustainable benefits of concrete. Firstly, it
has immense strength. Offering superb resistance to decay and degradation, Trents products
last and last. Lifetime energy costs are also significantly reduced thanks to concretes
impressive thermal mass. By keeping heat in during winter and out during summer, the
building relies far less on heating and air conditioning, thus minimising its long-term carbon
footprint.

The completion of cladding installation at Wakefields new Fire
Control Centre has coincided with an award for the recently
completed Fire Control Centre in County Durham. Both projects
involved the installation of Hunter Douglass advanced ventilated
(rainscreen) faade system, QuadroClad.
The two Fire Control Centres, in Belmont Business Park, County
Durham, and Paragon Business Village, Wakefield, form part of
Government plans to create a modern network of nine new fire
control centres across the country to replace the existing 46 control
rooms.
The 12.8m Durham centre, which replaces existing control rooms in
Cleveland, Durham, Northumberland and Tyne & Wear, was officially
opened by Fire Minister Parmjit Dhanda earlier this year.
The building, designed by Newcastle-based Dewjoc Architects, has
already been awarded the 2007 Office Development Award in the
annual Landmark Awards organised by leading northern business
publication The Journal.
The Wakefield project, which will become the new Control Centre
covering the Yorkshire and Humber region, includes integrated Hunter
Douglas Aerofoils, which were also supplied by Hunter Douglas
alongside the QuadroClad ventilated faade panels. Andrew Lee,
general manager of Hunter Douglas Facades & Sun Control, said:
There were some challenging requirements within the faade brief,
such as ultra-flat panels and the development of additional support
structures to cater for an unusually large void behind some of the
cladding. Hunter Douglas is accustomed to handling this type of
bespoke requirement, which is why our products were specified. The
announcement of the Landmark Award for the Durham Fire Control
Centre was fantastic news. Its the icing on the cake for what has
been a very successful project.
The cavity wall construction on this project achieves a very high
thermal efficiency and an air leakage rate four times that required by
the current Building Regulations, and achieved an excellent BREEAM
rating.
Whelan Construction Development was the main contractor on the
Durham Fire Control Centre, with Dane Architectural the cladding
contractor. The Manchester office of architect Broadway Malyan
is responsible for the Wakefield control centre, partnered by main
contractor Costain and cladding contractor Rossway Dowd.

large areas of Frontrunner Plus
at all its entrances. The high
performance matting, part
of the Frontrunner Entrance

the existing carpet eliminated
the cost and disruption of
retrofitting recessed matwells.
These precautions have not
only prevented the ingress of dirt on the shoes of hundreds of pupils but also
dramatically improved the appearance of the entrances.
Frontrunner Plus matting is designed with integral absorbent insets within a heel-
proof vinyl grid. This combination will scrape, clean and dry shoes while any dirt
remaining falls through the grid and is not transferred inside. Another advantage
for the school is that the entrance matting is visitor-friendly, particularly for the
less able because it is heel-proof, stick-proof and does not inhibit wheel-chairs.

21st century floor for mining museum
The Summerlee Heritage Museum in Coatbridge near
Glasgow has recently undergone a 10m refurbishment
that has included the installation of a high-tech flooring
system from Sika Ltd. The museum, which tells the story of
west Scotlands industrial past is on the site of the original
coal mine that closed in 1983. The Sikafloor resin system
installed throughout the 1,000sq metre visitor areas
produced a surface that is extremely durable, attractive,
easy to clean and maintain and is slip resistant. Specialist
flooring contractors K Systems Ltd firstly had to create a
damp-proof membrane to the old, original concrete floor.
This was achieved by applying a coating of the water-
based epoxy resin primer Sikafloor 155W and the
epoxy/cement mortar screed Sikafloor 81 EpoCem. A
further primer coating of Sikafloor 156 was applied before
the final surface coating of Sikafloor 261 Thixo. This is a
solvent-free epoxy resin with thixotropic properties that
produces a textured, slip resistant surface.

the design company responsible for the interior of Glo, Platform Group. In
the busy food and drink environment of Glo, the hollow spaces throughout
Antron LegacyTM carpet fibre scatter the light, so that dirt and stains are

gLASS DOOR HELPS TRANSfORM juNK ROOM INTO
SPACE fOR REfLECTION AND RECONCILIATION
Starting with a germ of an idea by the school chaplain, supported by recently
ordained Old Stoic, John Wates, and with the creative input of designer Mark
Cazalet and glass experts, Daedalian, what was a typical glory hole full of junk
at the back of Stowe School chapel, has been transformed into an area now
devoted to thought, reflection and reconciliation for pupils and staff alike.
Building on his original idea, the chaplain, the Rev. Robert Jackson, developed
themes with Mark Cazalet, himself an Old Stoic, who regularly works in
ecclesiastical settings.
An engraved glass door within a clear glass wall presented the best
demarcation solution in terms of delineating the area of the space. Overall, it is
intended for use by small groups of no more than 6 or 8. Themes evolved from
Psalm 32, with verse 9 in particular providing inspiration with its emphasis
on guidance and counselling. Both highly appropriate as tools for the school
chaplains ministry, as well as complementing the purpose of the space. Taking
four Old Testament figures who were called by God, Mark located them within
the Stowe Community.
Thus, Elisha, a young stoic, is in the library taking his study seriously, whilst
Samson is giving it his all on the rugby pitch whether he prevails against the
odds is left unsaid, but his commitment is not in doubt. Esther is contemplating
her beauty, not in a vain search for perfection, but in order to work out how
to employ it for the benefit of others. Finally, Ruth, as she comforts a weeping
friend, reveals a beauty that pays no attention to outward appearances. From
his own designs, Mark Cazalet based himself at Daedalians workshop, doing
all the handtooling himself, after which he oversaw the next stage when
Daedalian took over and carried out the sandblasting. This was typical of the
level of collaboration that Daedalian frequently undertakes with its clients,
whilst taking on additional responsibility for measuring up, transporting and
fitting-out.
The door also features a lead crystal handle. This is an addition to the Daedalian
range, which can be produced up to 2m long. At Stowe, the handle is horizontal
to avoid interfering with the images. Judging from its reception by existing and
Old Stoics alike, the project has been an outstanding success, not least because
as Mark Cazalet says : Daedalian offers a very human and supportive creative
environment. Davia and Chris Walmsley are highly capable. Having worked with
them on ambitious projects like Worcester Cathedral and Wesleys Chapel we
have refined our working relationship to a very high degree.

THE
MENDINI
COLLECTION
4S Review
Inspired by the timeless allure of precious stones, the
stunning new Mendini Collection is set to open up a new
realm of design possibilities for contemporary interiors.
Seves, the worlds leading manufacturer of glass blocks
for architectural and design applications, has collaborated
with Studio Mendini in Milan to create an extraordinarily
colourful range of sixteen glass blocks. The unique collection
is now available in the UK exclusively through Lancashire
manufacturer and distributor Shackerley.
In the early nineties, Seves transformed the humble glass
block into a sophisticated design component, enhancing
its brilliance and transparency and introducing subtle
pastel colours. Now, through the Mendini Collection, the
manufacturer is taking glass blocks into another colour
dimension altogether, with rich ruby red, deep topaz yellow,
intense amethyst and an array of additional gemstone
colours, alongside different intensities of black and white.
Glass blocks in the Mendini Collection are all in the highly
innovative Pegasus Metallised style. Each 19 x 19mm block
features extended external edges, or wings that can reduce
the visible grouting between blocks to as little as 2mm if
required, effectively delivering an all glass wall with almost
imperceptible joins. A pioneering mirroring treatment
applied to the outer edges of these ingenious blocks
increases their reflectivity and produces a silver optical
effect that adds further brilliance to the glass surface.

made out of 16mm polished limestone. To help
keep the aesthetics of the room from being spoilt
by an obvious essential access hatch, Paul turned to
Schlter -REMA, the ideal system for concealing

Thinking outside the box ensured that an architects specification
was met in a sleek, unobtrusive way at a development of 97
apartments in the heart of Chesterfield. Graham Hayes, Contracts
Director of tiling contractors Telling (Finishings) Ltd., who installed
a total of 3,000m2 of wall and floor tiling at Bradbury Place, says:
When youre doing work as good looking as this, finishing and
protection is of paramount importance, ensuring it remains looking
good in the future.
The architects, Core Design (UK) Ltd, wanted a brushed aluminium
profile to protect the top edge of tiled skirtings in the bathrooms,
the kitchen splashbacks, and where the tiled corridor floor met
the top riser of the communal staircases. Graham suggested using
Schlter-SCHIENE. The transition profile is more normally used to
protect the edge of tiles where they meet other flooring surfaces
such as carpet, but its low height provided a perfect aesthetic finish
for the Bradbury Place installation, as well as essential protection.
The sleek, unobtrusive design of this profile made it ideal as a
finishing trim in this case, while also protecting the vulnerable
edge of the tiles where they were most exposed. To ensure that
there is a profile to meet whatever specification architects require,
Schlter-Systems Ltd have an extensive range of profiles designed
to protect the edge of tiles while enhancing the overall appearance
of installations. These include some new finishes to the popular
Schlter-QUADEC, which is now available in chrome plated brass,

original stainless steel.
Other wall corners and edge profiles include the aluminium,

The stunning new timber-build observatory at Kielder Water & Forest Park
has been fire protected using a combination of Arch Timber Protections
proven fire retardant treatments. Designed by London-based Charles Barclay
Architects, the observatory will be a flagship project for Northumberland,
providing a state-of-the-art facility for specialist astronomers and scientists
to analyse the clear night skies over Kielder.
NON-COM Exterior was the major treatment specified following a CPD
presentation to Charles Barclay Architects by Arch Regional Sales Manager
Brian Winter. The presentation originally focused on preservative protection,
but it soon became clear that a fire retardant treatment would be more
suitable for this key public access project.
Jarrow-based timber specialists M H Southern supplied over 10m3 of Douglas
Fir, together with almost 18m3 of Whitewood for the project. Much of the
Douglas Fir was supplied in large sections for the exterior support columns
and to create the cantilever frame of the building, whilst the Whitewood was
used for the frame carcassing of the building.
Cladding experts Vincent Timber of Birmingham also supplied around 280m2
of Siberian Larch half lap cladding and over 3,500m of Siberian Larch planed
all round (PAR) material. All of these timbers now have a NON-COM Exterior
surface spread of flame protection that will highlight the natural beauty of
the timbers. Arch also supplied a quantity of Dricon treated plywood boards
to complete the interior of the building.
Both industrial treatments were carried out at Archs fire retardant treatment
centre at its Castleford headquarters in West Yorkshire. The process for each
involves high pressure impregnation of the fire retardant solution into the
timber followed by careful kiln drying and heat curing in the case of NON-
COM Exterior.
Kielder Observatory is located in an are of the country with demanding
environmental conditions, it has a wide variety of climatic variation and is
also remote. We were looking for a timber treatment that would deliver both
a fire retardant for the timber and a preservative. Following a recent CPD
presentation from Arch Timber Protection we reviewed their products and
Non-Com satisfied both of our requirements. explained Charles Barclay,
Architect for the project.
The Observatory was designed by Charles Barclay Architects after winning a
RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) design competition launched by
the Kielder Partnership. It was identified as one of RIBAs most successful
competitions, with over 230 worldwide entrants from as far afield as USA and
Holland. The build has seen Charles Barclay Architects work with Kent-based
builder Stephen Mersh to realise the potential of this unique project.

increased substantially and architectural powder coating can now achieve
guarantees of up to 30 years on finish appearance and adhesion with
minimal but regular cleaning and maintenance.
Pre-treatment tanks now use less chemicals with some chemical pre-
treatment systems offering a chromate free solution which offer the same
levels of surface protection. Water used in the process is now recycled
several times over and out fall from the process, whilst not recommended
for drinking, is almost as clean as the water entering the plant.
As the powder is applied electrostatically, there are no harmful emissions.
One of the highest costs for a powder coater is the running of curing
ovens which have also changed significantly over the last few years and
become much more
efficient with heat
recovery systems and
improved insulation.
Excess powders can
also now be recycled,
eliminating the need
to dispose in land fill
sites.
Recycling aluminium
and steel which has been powder coating is easily achieved as the metals
are brought up to melt temperature the coating simply burns off with
negligible toxicity.
Qualicoats rigourous specifications and inspection procedures ensure all
applicators work to the same high standard and Qualicoat members pride
themselves at being at the forefront of quality whilst ensuring processes
minimise impact on the environment. Qualicoat insists users and specifiers
to always ask for the Qualicoat standard when ordering powder coat
finishes.

commissioned Surespan to design and build two unique sets of 140 degree opening hatch
doors for the roof and the front of the Observatorys two rotating turrets - one to house a

When open they enable both telescopes to point at any part of the night sky and move
around freely within a 2.5 metre diameter. The observatory, which opened earlier this
year, is sited on top of Black Fell, a hill close to the Scottish border and overlooking
Kielder village in Northumberland. The area was chosen because of its lack of light and air
pollution which allows professional and amateur astronomers to enjoy a clear view of the
night sky.
The new facility hopes to encourage more people to develop their interest in astronomy
and welcomes visits from researchers and small school groups. Surespan designs and
manufactures access hatches to suit all types of internal and external applications. Ranging
from FACTA Class A to F loadings, their hatches are available in standard sizes or can be

nibe provides geothermal heat for
traditional peaK district farm
When Deborah and Martin Hofman bought Wheeldon Trees Farm, in
the Peak District National Park last year they were determined that
the refurbishment and decoration programme they had planned
should include as many environmentally sound features as possible.
The most important area for change was for the heating system for
the farmhouse itself and for the eight holiday homes.
They decided on the use of NIBE geothermal system to harness
the energy created by solar radiation and the residual heat from
rainfall and stored in the ground. A surface collector system using
extensive underground plastic tubing seemed the natural medium.
The cottages and parts of the house were first fitted with the highest
level of insulation possible.
When this was completed, under-floor central heating systems
could be installed, the groundwork dug and piping laid before the
installation of the heat pumps. For the cottages a powerful NIBE
Fighter 1330 heat exchange unit was used, fed from 1,200 metres
of 40mm mdpe pipe looped, buried roughly one metre deep in the
pasture land and filled with a non-freezing emulsion of glycol and
water to carry the collected heat to the pump.
For the heating needs of the farmhouse a separate system of 900
metres of 40mm pipe is linked to a NIBE Fighter 1140 [a smaller heat
exchange pump but still ample to supply domestic water and central
heating needs for a substantial dwelling].

performance ability and its inherent strength. As well as handling considerations, the extremely light weight of the block reduces the amount of time spent on
construction. A medium density block, Evalite is ideal for internal applications where weight is crucial. Manufactured from Class 1 aggregates, it attains the highest
levels of fire resistance, essential under the rules governing sports stadia, and it offers excellent sound insulation between rooms.

The Quad Building is one of the first constructions undertaken under the
auspices of Derby Cityscape, the Urban Regeneration Company that guides
the rejuvenation of Derby City Centre. Built on the site of local landmarks,
the Hippodrome and the Playhouse, Derby Quad was designed by architects
Feilden Clegg Bradley of Bath, to be a modern, innovative IT & Media centre
housing two Cinemas.
When final planning was granted during the Autumn of 2005, the project
began with completion expected towards the end of 2007. A key feature
of the design was the use of locally sourced building materials wherever
possible, and the stone intended for the rainscreen system was chosen from
a seam at a local quarry.
When Stonescreen, the sub-contractor originally appointed by Morgan
Ashurst (the main contractor) to design, supply and install the rainscreen
system, ran into difficulties. the decision was taken to select alternative
supply-chain partners. Domus Facades were appointed to supply the stone-
cladding system and tiles; Aliva Engineering Ltd was chosen to install the
Metsec SFS & cementacious board in addition to designing and installing
the stone rainscreen system, extending to 1200m
2
.
The on-site team from Aliva was provided with a scope of works covering
four distinct areas.
Installation of Metsec and Board
Installation of rainscreen support system
Installation of stone tiles
Installation of coping & flashings
The schedule for installing Metsec and board was 4 weeks; with the
primary objective of ensuring the site was watertight as soon as possible.
Aliva immediately proposed a system in contrast to that which Stonescreen
has started and the first task was to totally remove this in readiness for the
Metsec and cementacious board which, when it arrived on site, came in
standard lengths and required cutting to size.
By working extended hours the building was watertight within 11 days.
To maintain programme schedule, installers were split into teams tasked
with initially installing the carrier system along with the insulation & stone
as it arrived on site; completing this vital stage within the tight 12-week
programme.
Given the complexity of the design, the variety of details and number of
modules involved, meeting site delivery schedules for installing the stone

and took on the additional task of completing the

budget. Despite the many difficulties with this project,
Aliva Engineering Ltd provided outstanding levels of
service to Morgan Ashurst and their dedicated attitude &
keen working spirit minimised the impact on the overall
programme or to other supply chain partners.
This prompted Morgan Ashursts Project Director, Lee
Dobb, to comment: We couldnt have reached key
milestones without the team from Aliva; their no-fuss
attitude enabled us to minimise the effects of early
disruptions to the project and deliver upon the design
objectives

To reflect the demand for cleaning, Remmers have launched a brochure
detailing their Rotec Whirl Jet, gentle mechanical cleaning of all building
faades. The system is a mechanical rather than chemical cleaning approach
and uses a vortex blasting nozzle to gently lift dirt away from surfaces rather
than the brute force associated with traditional grit blasting. Virtually dust
free, relatively quiet and gentle enough to lift off dirt, ink or paint without
any damage to the underlying surface. Conversely, it can also be wound up to
remove laitance from concrete! It is being extensively used to remove graffiti,
clean building faades, remove coatings and prepare surfaces for London
Underground, monument, church and building owners across Europe.
