Line Entrance Module

With the Line Entrance Module, several functions and apparatus previously located in various places in the switchyard can be integrated on a common structure. Three examples of possible Line Entrance Modules

Introduction
Network operators increasingly require substation equipment with: Higher availability Lower maintenance costs Smaller space requirement Enhanced safety Lower installation cost To meet the above requirements, ABB Switchgear is introducing a new concept, Switchgear Modules. Switchgear Modules available today are: Switching Module Line Entrance Module Energy Metering Module The Switchgear Module concept is based on three basic design principles: Time proven ABB high voltage (HV) equipment with extensive, and impressive, service records. Optical transducers for current and voltage metering. Modern communication technology, including optical links, used for control and protection.

Example 2 DOCT Digital Optical Current Transducers on top of DOVT Digital Optical VoltageTransducers with NVA Earthing Switch

Standard equipment
A standard Line Entrance Module consists of the following HV equipment: CPA/CPB Capacitor Voltage Transformers or DOVT Digital Optical Voltage Transducers NVA Earthing Switch

Optional equipment
In addition to the standard equipment, the Line Entrance Module can also be supplied with the following optional equipment: PEXLIM Surge Arresters DOCT Digital Optical Current Transducers Energy Metering Module (combined DOVT/DOCT) A complete 3-phase unit Line Entrance Module including CVTs, Earthing Switch and Surge Arresters is tested.

Features
CPA/CPB. Capacitor Voltage Transformer (CVT) for connection between phase and earth is used for both metering and protection applications. The CPA/CPB design, incorporating a mixed dielectric and high intermediate (tap) voltage, is suitable for all climatic conditions. The CPA/CPB is normally supplied with a porcelain insulator but can, on request, be supplied with a polymeric insulator. DOVT. Digital Optical Voltage Transducer for connection between phase and earth is used for both metering and protection applications. A digital signal is transmitted via an optical fibre, from the electronics in the base of the DOVT to an interface unit in the substations control room. Since the DOVT design includes electronics instead of a electromagnetic unit (i.e. no inductance), the risk of ferroresonance is eliminated and the transient performance is improved in comparison with conventional voltage transformers. DOVTs are suitable for power line carrier (PLC) communication applications and can be supplied with either a porcelain or polymeric insulator. NVA EARTHING SWITCH. Earthing switches within a switchyard are used for personal safety. In the Line Entrance Module, the earthing switch is mounted on the voltage transformer structure with the stationary contact placed on the voltage transformer head. The earthing switch can be either three or single pole operated via either a manual (BCH-F) or motor (BCM-F) operating mechanism.

PEXLIM SURGE ARRESTER. Surge arresters are used for protecting electrical equipment from atmospheric and switching overvoltages. Because PEXLIM surge arresters use hydrophobic silicone rubber insulation, they are suitable for installation in polluted areas. Other benefits derived from using hydrophopic silicone rubber insulations are: low weight (less than half the weight of porcelain insulated surge arresters), personnel/equipment safety in the event of overloading and high withstand to rough transport handling. DOCT. Digital Optical Current Transducer for direct connection to the busbar is used for both metering and protection applications. A digital signal is transmitted via an optical fibre, from the DOCT electronics at busbar level to an interface unit in the substation control room. At the interface unit, the signal is converted to a form compatible with the secondary equipment. The DOCT contains no oil or gas and, therefore, it can not explode. In addition, the safety of the DOCT is enhanced since there are no open secondary terminals. Finally, because there is no need for high voltage insulation of the primary conductor, the size and weight (approx. 75 kg) of the DOCT can be drastically reduced in comparison with conventional current transformers. ENERGY METERING MODULE. Combining the DOVT and DOCT provides a complete metering and protection system (Energy Metering Module). In a combined DOVT/DOCT, the capacitor voltage divider (CVD) is supplied with a polymeric insulator with the optical fibres for the DOCT connections embedded in the insulator wall.

Benefits
Reduced space requirement ... Short installation time ...

Due to...
... compact design with several apparatus mounted on the same structure. ... prefabricated and pre-tested Switchgear Modules. Reduced civil works and less switchyard material required.
