History teaches us that times of near stability never quite blossom into actual stability. I predict a series of regrettable incidents that will knock us all one step back for the two we have thus far taken forward. At least one step back. ~Yugman the Sage, to some adventurer or another

Herein lay what I feel is a comprehensive version of the history of Scarn. I attempted to keep it as by the book(s) as possible, only omitting the written stuff that I simply dont have & anything contradictory. Enjoy. Harrison

Time on Scarn
A year on Scarn consists of 400 days. In the current and most common AV (After Victory) calendar, it is divided into 16 months, each honoring two aspects of the eight divinities. Each month has 25 days, two weeks of eight days and one week of nine. The days are: Corday, Madraday, Taniday, Hedraday, Wildday, Charday, Belsaday and Vanday. The final week of each month holds the extra day of Denday, sometimes called Landsday, to honor Denev.

The Zodiac

The cycle is balanced, though not precisely ordered, following each other in some strange order. Each sign represents an entity, not quite gods but more than simple outsiders, they represent the celestial order remade after the Divine and Titanswar. They are in the following order: Ursos, the Bear (Corot); Lycaeus, the Wolf (Tanot); Rukha, the Roc (Enkilot); Sikklos, the Scythe (Belot); Destrios, the Warhorse (Chardot); Khepira, the Scarab (Madrot); Imperatus, the Emperor (Hedrot); Drachys, the Dragon (Vangalot); Charys, the Siren (Charder); Astarra, the Mother (Madrer); Kylos, the Wheel (Enker); Malneus, the Hammer (Corer); Delphos, the Dolphin (Taner); Vespis, the Bat (Belsamer); Turros, the Tower (Hedrer); Nekheros, the Vulture (Vanger). For the Zodiac symbols look in Relics and Rituals 2: Lost Lore .

The Moons
Scarn has two moons, but only one is granted a name. The orb called Belsameths moon passes through a full cycle every 25 days, and it is said that Manawe, goddess of the seas, commands the ocean tides to rise and fall in honor of her half-sister. The second moon is called the nameless Orb or the Grey Moon when it is called anything. Corean decreed that the moon should not be named or mentioned, and across Ghelspad it is considered a symbol of death and ill omen. Its cycle is four months plus one day. Every six and one-quarter years the two moons are full on the same night, widely considered to be a time of catastrophic events, horror and disaster. On such nights, the commoners of Ghelspad pray behind locked doors, and even the brave and wise feel a deep sense of unease and fear.

The After Victory (AV) Calendar: The four months of spring are as follows:
Corot The month of strength, particularly that returning to the land after winter. Tanot The month of hunting. Enkilot The month of storms. Belot The month of death, particularly those newborn that fail to endure.

The four months of summer are as follows:

Chardot The month of war. Madrot The month of the radiant sun. Hedrot The month of wealth. Vangalot The month of disasters.

The four months of autumn are as follows:

Charder The month of servitude. Madrer The month of harvest. Enker The month of travel. Corer The month of crafting.

The four months of winter are as follows:

Taner The month of good fortune. Belsamer The month of darkness. Hedrer The month of protection. Vanger The month of pestilence.

Holidays & Special Days

Carnival of Flowers: Held on the second Wildday of Tanot, it features feasts, hunts, music and dance honoring Tanil the Huntress. Festival of the Sun: Falls on the summer solstice, typically the second Vanday of Madrot. During the festival, the faithful give thanks to Madriel and ask that she bless them with a bountiful harvest. Feast of Wheat: Marks the autumn equinox and takes place on the second Belsaday of Madrer. Once more the goddess Madriel is honored, as is Enkili, who is thought to control the winter weather. On this day, the dead are also honored with prayers and ceremonies dedicated to Belsameth. Grim Day: The shortest day of the year is observed on the second Vanday of Belsamer. On this day the faithful perform acts of penance and atonement, in solemn ritual intended to cleanse their souls in the coming year. Divinities Day: Celebrated on the first Corday of Chardot, in which Corean and Chardun are invoked as gods of war. Festivities include great mock battles, feasts and dramatic recreations of the events of the Divine War. In recent years, Divinities Day has served as the focal point of a movement to end the practice and use of arcane magic. In Darakeene, those passionately supporting this movement have marred the days celebration with violence against arcanists, claiming it symbolizes the destruction of Mesos. Longnight: A Hollowfaustian festival held on the winter solstice. Its citizens celebrate it by remaining awake all night, drinking hot brews and exchanging stories. Some wealthy households invite the citys best storytellers into their Longnight celebrations and award prizes to the one who tells the longest and most fascinating story. Gray Night: A Hollowfaustian festival held every 101 days, when the Nameless Orb is full. Condemned by most priests, it honors the cycles of the world, in particular the ebb and flow of magical energies. Carnival of Masks: Begins at sunset on the last day of Corer and ends when the eastern skies grow lighter, just before dawn, on the first day of Taner. During this night, Hollowfausters wear masks; by assuming the roles of ghosts, evil spirits and monsters for a night, the citizens symbolically personify the lands worst aspects, asserting they are not victims awaiting a predator. They become one with the dead validating their right to live on the ruins of ancient Sumara. The Shelzari borrowed this Hollowfaust holy day and turned it into a debauched citywide carnival festival. Citizens don masks and the city goes wild. Food, liquor, and drugs are consumed openly and in abundance, and public fornification with numerous anonymous strangers is commonplace. Naturally, Hollowfausters tend to view this perversion of their holiday with disdain.

Scarred Lands Calendars

There have been a number of calendars, but it was the Ledean Empire which sought a unified calendar. For purposes of showing some of the different cultures of the world they are listed below:
Calendar of Axes: The Dwarven Imperium utilized the phrase Axeyear in its dating system, as in Axeyear 147. Axeyear One marks the date of the great council overseen by Goran of the Axes. The last year of the Dwarven Calendar was Axeyear 1189, which saw the destruction of the Great Citadel of the Imperium. Axeyear One was approximately -9261 OC. Serpentreckoning: The calendar of the Asaathi Empire, Year One Serpentreckoning marked the founding of the First City in the swamps of Kan Thet. Year One Serpentreckoning was approximately -5610 OC. Vera-Tre: Their calendar traces back to the founding of their kingdom in the Ganjus Forest. The years are measured in rings, one hundred of which make up a cycle, each of which is named after one of the treant patrons of the elven nation. This cycle broke during the Divine & Titanswar, though was reset in 1 AV with the cycle of Khourostannar, a treant who led the defense of Denev against the forces of Mormo. The current year is 50 Ylriannkathlis, named for the mentor-treant of the current Verdant Seat. It is unknown by sages when this reckoning system began, and its whispered that such lore may have ben lost to the elves during the War. Imperial Calendar: From the Empire of Flame, Year One IC marks the founding of the Empire. This calendar ended in 837 IC, with the destruction of the Imperial House by the Slarecians. Year One IC was approximately -1116 OC. Old Calendar (OC): Also called the Ledean Calendar, Year One marks the rise of the Three Generals of Aurimar to power. This calendar ended in 3529 OC, marking the end of the Divine & Titanswar. All time has been recorded using the New Calendar since. New Calendar (AV): The years of the New Calendar are noted as AV, or After Victory. Year One of the New Calendar marks the remaking of the world by the gods. The New Calendar is the current calendar; with the current year as 150 AV.

Note: Dates in Italics are estimated.

-1000 OC The elves found the first of their cities in northern Termana, eventually evolving into the empire of Eldura-tre, a peaceful but powerful alliance of elves and dragons. Their god stands with them, and brings prosperity to their empire, and the titan Mesos shares many of his secrets, making elven wizards the most powerful on the continent. 0 OC A sophisticated civilization arises in the Gamulganjus, the jungle lands of southeastern Termana. Consisting of numerous warring city-states, this civilization worships the titans, particularly Hrinruuk, Mormo and Chern. The Ledean Empire is founded with the Triumn Dynasty; begun with the rule of the Three generals of Aurimar, the Triumn Dynasty truly began with the marriage of Emperor Knoriv, a son of one of the generals, to Ylia, the daughter of another. These were arguably the glory years of the empire, with Dara and Veridan Provinces being incorporated into the empire. 312 OC End of the Triumn dynasty and beginning of the Vhaerith dynasty. Known for its service to Mesos and the number of sorcerers in its ranks, the Vhaerith dynasty saw the creation of the Coventacle of the Ancients, the outlawing of god-worship, and the annexation of the Amalthean and Venirian Provinces. 500 OC Seeing that other gods and titans have created races to serve them, Chardun creates his own race, the Charduni Dwarves, who immediately set off on the road to conquest and empire.

Timeline of Events
507 OC - 1176 OC Beginning of the Morian Dynasty; founded when the Princes of the Venirian Province rebelled and assassinated the entirety of the Vhaerith family, the Morian Dynasty came to power because they were closely related to the Vhaerith and were the first of take action against the rebels of the Venirian Province. They allied with the sultan of Shai al Hazari, who joined his lands with the Ledean Empire, forming the Zathiskite Province and allowing the empires troops to squelch the uprising in the Venirian Province. The admission of the Zathiskite SamMarith family into Ledean nobility proved to be the Morians undoing, as soon as the Venirian Province was pacified, the Zathiskite nobility used their command over genies and fire magics to overthrow the Morian dynasty. (507 OC - 527 OC) The SamMarith dynasty is perhaps the first that could be called truly decadent, with the Emperor technically maintaining Aurimar as the capital of Lede, despite his continued dwelling in Elz. The imperial family exercised its new power to destroy its hated ancestral enemies, the noble family of the Southern Kingdoms. The Legions march on these kingdoms and overthrow of the royal family created Calas Province. (527 OC - 732 OC) The Takhuul dynasty; the first of these was the most powerful family in Aurimar, aided by the Coventacle of the Ancients, overthrew the Zathiskite Emperor, seizing power and founding a new dynasty with promises of further expansion of the empire unmotivated by excesses or petty personal feuds. The Gharian and Vascan Provinces are founded during this time, thanks to the Takhuuls draconian expansionistic fervor. (732 OC - 820 OC) Beginning of the Albriannin Dynasty; a family of the Veridan which managed to gain power for a short time, their clumsy management of imperial resources led to famine and plague in areas of the empire. In short order, they were deposed by revolt from within the empire, and the Takuuls placed back upon the throne. (820 OC - 847 OC) The Second Takuul dynasty saw the creation of the Caminian Province. In time, however, the family fell into decadence, notably the abuse of julka weed and lotus extracts, as well as more exotic magical indulgences (including the sexual violation of bound angelic beings, according to the histories remaining of the time). The empire eventually came under attack by seemingly innumerable barbarian hordes from the Great Wilds, Albadia, and the Orcmarches, spurred by divine powers sickened at the imperial excesses. The Empire of Lede came dangerously close to falling, though it was saved by the tactical genius of the Ombael generals, who overthrew the Takhuul Emperors who refused to see the gravity of the situation. (847 OC - 1176 OC) 1200 OC After several years of drought, crop failures, and suffering at the hands of the titans, the people of the jungle cities rise up and throw down their priest-kings, and embrace the worship of the gods. the civilization begins a long decline.

Timeline of Events
1176 OC - 2430 OC The Ombael dynasty begins, founding an empire based on military excellence. They spent the first century of their rule reversing the damage that Takhhul excesses had inflicted upon the empire. Two branches of the family gradually developed, one a line of half-orcs renowned for their combat prowess and patronage of the Legion of Ash, the other a line of sorcerers with ties to the Seats of Mormo and Mesos in the Coventacle of Ancients. (1176 OC - 1580 OC) The Ombaels were overthrown by a family that could trace its lineage back to the Takhuuls. The Mangarith-Khuul dynasty was supported by a strong druidic faction within the Coventacle. It outlawed the practice of sorcery and stripped those of orcish blood of their citizenship, making them second-class citizens at best, non-entities at worst. The Coventacle nearly tore itself apart due to infighting during this time, as sorcerers tried to defend themselves against the druids. The Japhinian Province was claimed during this dynasty and turned into a penal colony for sorcerers and those of orcish blood. (1580 OC - 2130 OC) The Argent family, forced into hiding because of the preponderance of sorcerous talent in their blood, rose up and overthrew the Mangarith-Khuul dynasty. The Argent dynastys reign was short, due to its tyrannical and decadent ways, taxing the provinces heavily in order to fund its excesses. Rebellion grew in the latter half of the dynasty, with Calas, Gharia, and Zathiskite Provinces erupting in open revolt, pulling away from the empire proper. (2130 OC - 2275 OC) Open rebellion sees the destruction of the Argent dynasty at the hands of the remnants of the Coventacle of Ancients (now referred to as the Cult of the Ancients). Throughout the Thael dynasty, provinces break off from the empire, despite attempts by the Thael family to reign in the shattering of Lede. By the last decade of the Thael dynasty, the only place to still hold allegiance to the Emperor of Lede is Aurimar itself, which quickly comes under attack by Albadian barbarians, destroying the Thael dynasty and the bureaucracy of Thael. (2275 OC - 2430 OC) 2106 OC Dwarven Marked King Alathin founds the dwarven kingdom of Burok Torn, Irontooth pass is built. 2398 OC - 2433 OC In Albadia the Age of the Bear King. 2433 OC - 3526 OC The Sorcerer-King dynasty; while technically not a part of the Ledean Empire, it saw the coming of a cabal of renegade male sorcerers from Albadia, who promptly rose to power as the Sorcerer-Kings of Aurimar, founding the Empire of the Wheel. Because scholars consider them the last line of rulers in Aurimar, they are accounted as the final dynasty, despite the fact that the Ledean Empire proper fell with the end of the Thael dynasty. (2433 OC - 3526 OC)

Timeline of Events
3000 OC The Charduni Empire is at its height, spanning the continent of Termana, held in check only by the elf-dragon alliance in the north, and stubborn human states to the east. 3085 OC Sumara is founded. 3462 OC - 3513 OC In Albadia, the Age of the Witchblood King. 3466 OC The Divine and Titanswar begins, its events bring down the last of the lost jungle civilizations of Termana. Chardun decrees that Charduni fight alongside the elves and humans for the moment, and the three divine races combine forces to fight the titanspawn. The Sisters of the Sun, an all-female knightly order devoted to Madriel, is formed. 3480 OC The high elven wizards and Sorcerers in the Citadel of the Rose are assaulted by a horde of demons summoned by the titanspawn. The elves erect a magical barrier, cutting the citadel and surrounding lands from the rest of Scarn. 3507 OC Kadum is bound and flung into the ocean, now known as the Blood Sea, by the gods. The resulting tidal wave of blood is henceforth known as Kadums Deluge, and it floods much of northern Termana, sorely pressing the elves and humans. The Citadel of the Rose is completely cut off by the new bay known as Kadums Blight. The charduni are the most direly affected, with many of their armies drowned. Immediately, the humans and elves break the truce and drive the charduni from much of Termana. 3513 OC - 3526 OC In Albadia, Arnan of the Black Wings, known to history as the Crow King becomes the High King of Albadia. His rule is a disaster, during his reign a battle known as the Slaughter of Arnan took place, where many tribes were slain by divine forces led by the Herald of Vangal. Liangulf challenges the Crow King to the Great Duel emerging victorious, with Arnan supposedly subjected to the blood-eagle punishment. Speculation abounds as to whether this is the beginning of the Albadian taboo against male sorcerers. Destruction of Sumara. (3513 OC) 3521 OC As the high elves prepare for their final assault on the Charduni Empire, the titan Chern approaches the continent, and the high elven armies are recalled. In a tragic battle, the elven god is slain, and the enraged elves destroy Chern The only titan defeated by mortals without divine aid. The cost is high, however, for Cherns Curse visits the high elves, transforming them into the race today known as the forsaken elves. Chern is subsequently encased in earth by Denev and imprisoned under the Flourishing Flats, rumored to be the birthplace of man and currently known as the Mourning Marshes, on Termanas sister continent Ghelspad.

Timeline of Events

It is within these four strongholds, marking the distant corners of the world, that the djinn races ~ the elemental spawn of Mesos and Denev ~ are imprisoned and presumably remain so to this day. Civilization undergoes the process of rebuilding. Tentative steps to what will become the Coreanic city-state of Mithril take place. Mithril begins attracting a civilian population. 19 AV - 21 AV The human alliance presses forward, driving the Ghoul Kings forces before it. 20 AV The refugee population and their necomantic overseers formally unite as the Free City-State of Hollowfaust. The Sovereign Council forms the official body of government and an agreedupon code of laws goes into effect. 22 AV In the southern desert lands, the Ghoul Kings forces make their stand, and Shanaes army is nearly defeated. The goddess Madriel intervenes on behalf of the humans, and the Ghoul King is defeated, his army scattered. The king flees to the Isle of the Dead, where he attempts to rebuild his forces. Madriel decrees that Shanae take the Sisters to Silversile and begin construction of the Citadel of the Sun, new headquarters for the order. 25 AV Reports of a strange caravan of wagons and bizarre performers travelling throughout northwestern Termana begin surfacing. This caravan, known as the Carnival of Shadows, is led by a being calling himself the Laughing Man, after its performances, it vanishes along with the mad, infirm and outcasts of the villages it visits. 27 AV The last formal meeting of the council of princes in the forsaken elf realms. From this point forward, the principalities go their separate ways. Dunahnaen slaves begin gathering bones from various battlegrounds for use in the construction of the Wall of Bones, which continues to the present day. 67 AV Sunharrow and Karsian fight over logging rights in the Dire Woods. Some believe that the Jack of Tears is responsible for the war, which ends inconclusively. 72 AV Another sutak army mounts the Third Siege of Hollowfaust. 74 AV King (then Prince) Virduk of Calastia is born.

Timeline of Events
80 AV The Stricken forest is decimated by the object and group called the Obsidian Pyre. Speculation abounds as to the reason and groups ultimate purpose. 82 AV - 90 AV The Druid War. Mormo-worshipping druids of Khet ally with titanspawn from the Hornsaw Forest and Bleak Savannah. The elves of Vera-Tre, though surprised, fend off the initial attack, buying time for some human nations, including Albadia in the north and a host of human nations in the south, to respond. The titanspawn forces were ultimately forced into retreat, but not without cost, Calastias sudden withdrawal near the end of the conflict results in the near decimation of the civilization of Amalthea, with Khet seemingly claiming this, however hollow, victory. 88 AV - 107 AV In Albadia, the Age of the Hammer King. High King Orjulf founds a great new city celebrating his ascension, naming it for his son Thurfas and constructs a palace. The palace was ill-omened, found empty one day with its inhabitants horribly slain, including Orjulf and his family. Only four were found alive: prisoners in the dungeons, all hopelessly insane. 90 AV Virduk ascends the throne of Calastia through an act of patricide. He recalls Calastian troops engaged the the Druid War and begins on the road to conquest. This period, from 90 AV to approximately 112 AV, is also known as the Rise of Virduk. The Jack of Tears learns of this event and dispatches a heron priest, accompanied by shadow jesters and dark harlequinns, to treat with the new king. 92 AV Calastian forces gain control of Irontooth Pass, where the dwarf king Thune (father of the current dwarven king Thain), along with 1,500+ dwarves dies, allowing Calastian forces free reign into Burok Torn and Durrover. 93 AV The Battle of Twisted Timbers. Adurn, the last of the Veshian Bregis nobles leads his army in defense of the dwarves, perishing in a hail of Calastian arrows. His spirit is consigned the Great Swan (one of Madriels symbols), and the remainder of his army adopted by the Dwarves of Burok Torn. 102 AV Thorvalos and Padrinola go to war over disputed territory along the Whiteflood River. Momus is suspect in provoking the fight, but send emissaries to help in peace negotiations the following year.

Timeline of Events
107 AV - 133 AV In Albadia, the Tenth Age of Frost. A time of chaos in which the country knew no High King. Tribes raided the overburdened cities, and the underpopulated Thurfas was besieged by the Frostwolf tribe, arguably the largest of the northern Albadian tribes. With Thurfas fall, Thalos, leader of the Frostwolves is proclaimed High King; however he refuses to put aside his city-bred wife for a Hellian one (and reportedly refusing to destroy Thurfas proper). He angers the forces of the Witchmount and further scandalizes the tribes by moving into the cursed palace of Orjulf. 112 AV - 126 AV Red Water Rising. The kraken Qul Al Nur Ran, also known as Queen Ran of the Blood Sea initiates the natural disaster called the Blood Monsoon, which unknown to the peoples of Scarn even today, was its attempt at conquest and destruction of the surface world. It decimates the continents eastern and southeastern seaboard, whipping up enormous tidal waves and driving blood-colored rain inland, affecting settlements in the Kelders, the Hornswythe River reversing its flow creating the Blood Basin. An entire dwarven city Bela-Kay, disappears beneath the floodwaters, and a quarter of Bridged City slides from its perch. Titanspawn rise up from the Blood Seas depths led by pisceans. Most scholars bookend this period with the fall of Sky Keep in 126 AV, but attacks associated with the Blood Monsoon occur as late as 132 AV. 121 AV Mithril city engineers discover tunnels not detailed on any map, when exploratory crews fail to return, the young Mithril Knight Barconius, along with some of the city-states finest, investigate. There the young paladin has his first encounter with the Penumbral Pentagon and its leader, the Drendali elf Dar Tan. In battle Barconius slices off Dar Tans left arm, although Dar Tan and one other shadow mage escape during the melee, Mithril is seemingly safe. 125 AV Countess Tagani of the Tagani-Solarus house in Darakeene along with her lover the explorer Barcelus, commandeer a flotilla of Darakeenes finest warships and found the island nation of Karria. 126 AV Colonists from Calastia arrive in northern Termana, claiming uninhabited territories near the forsaken elf principalities and calling it Virduks Promise. Ambassadors from the Jack of Tears are again dispatched, beginning good relations between the two states. The largest sutak army yet, led by Pherakka the Incarnadine, mounts the Fourth Siege of Hollowfaust. It lasts for seven days, until the necromancers fully activate the Bonewrack Dragon, which leads the countercharge that breaks the sutak army. Calastian forces conquer Rahoch, but not before Lord Killian Vrail and a host of Mithril knights manage to escape. Landing in Fangsfall Peninsula, Vrail effectively makes that his new kingdom (in exile) until such time as he can go back to his native Rahoch. 130 AV Founding of the City-State of Mansk.

Timeline of Events
132 AV The charduni attempt to invade the Iron Steppes. The invasion ends with charduni general Axamoxes staked out on the plains, left for the jackels by the victorious lamia and human tribes. 133 AV - Present In Albadia the Current Age (Age of the Progressive King?). Thalos sends emissaries, most notably his daughter Sirida, to the outside world. This is met with approval in the southern part of the country, most notably the cities, but further stroke the fires of resentment in the north. In 136 AV, a Great Council is held among the northern tribes (to which the High King was not invited), resulting in a champion being chosen to challenge Thalos to a Great Duel, the High King prevails and the challenger is slain. However, rumors abound of a new Great Council recently being called; again High King Thalos was uninvited. 139 AV A raiding force from the Sisters of the Sun strikes at the charduni city of Shaskalcho, liberating hundreds of slaves. The One in White declares that a state of war exists between his nation and the knightly order. 143 AV Inhabitants of the Iron Steppes complain of troubling dreams, in which a gigantic, invulnerable creature, emerges from beneath the ground to spread havoc across Termana. 147 AV Skirmishes between the serpent-folk of the Yellow Jungle and the terali and human tribes of the Gamulganjus grow more frequent, but the yuan-ti avoid open warfare. Conflicts between the human and terali tribes grow in number and intensity as well, some blaming the yuan-ti for instigating them. A cleric-wizard names Palcun arises in the tepuje city of Maratawo, declaring the Lady of Darkness (believed to be a local name for Belsameth) as goddess of his city, calling for union of the other tepuje settlements into a single powerful empire. 150 AV (now) A Calastian expedition returning from the Titanspire is attacked by centaur tribesmen on the Centaur Plains and wiped out. Virduks Promises governor, Duke Hynosu, offers a bounty of 10,000 platinum calas to whoever returns the expeditions possessions. Rumors circulate that the expedition found something important or powerful at the spire, and King Virduk is desperate to get it back. Charduni Prince Dzurrad Hurathi-Chardun arrives at Hollowfaust with carts of gold, metal and weapons, demanding instruction in the necromantic arts. Aria of Weyside (the supposed herald of the dead goddess of magic Miridum), along with her companions journey to the Sky Keep ruins. Princess Hannatha of Bridged City is engaged to King Jaren of Mullis Town, there are rumors of sabotage attempts to delay or halt the impending alliance/marriage. In the third quarter of the year, Vladawen, former high priest of the now dead elven god, begins his quest to revive That Which Abides.
