Text Two

FILM by Charlie Higson

The Man Who Knew Too Little is a gem: the sort of film they dont make any more - a knockabout comedy thriller in which nobody gets hurt. Wallace, a naive video store clerk from Iowa, flies to London to celebrate his birthday with his high-powered brother, who sends him off to a participatory theatre performance during which Wallace finds himself involved in a plot by the British and Russian secret services. The joy of the film is that the baddies think that Wallace is for real, Wallace thinks the whole thing is a play, and only the audience knows what is really going on. Live Flesh is based on a book by Ruth Rendell and deals with sad people leading unhappy lives and destroying others. Spanish director Pedro Almodovar would not, perhaps, be the first choice to adapt one. Unsuccessfully transplanted from Rendells London to Almodovars Madrid, theres very little of Rendells book here, but the main storyline remains: attempting to rescue a woman, a policeman is shot and paralyzed from the waist down. When the villain is released from prison, he starts to insinuate himself into the policemans life and marriage with tragic and bloody consequences. In the end though it doesnt do justice to Rendells gripping story and isnt what you expect from the normally flamboyant Almodovar. Shall We Dance is a perfect feel-good movie about a bored, depressed Tokyo office worker with the usual domestic responsibilities. Upon seeing a beautiful girl on a train, he discovers shes a ballroom dance instructor and enrolls for classes to get closer to her. Once there, he becomes caught up in the lives of the pupils and other teachers and obsessed with learning the tango. The film offers a fascinating look at Tokyo and Japanese life. The Real Blonde is an off-beat, star-studded film about the interconnected lives of a group of youngish, show-biz people in New York and their relationships. Its very good on how, even in a large city, you keep bumping into the same people. The film is fresh, funny and worth leaving the house for, though not as insightful into the meaning of relationships as the director would like to think.

Advice for Students

Make sure the school is recognized or accredited by a relevant authority. This is the minimum standard. Ask the school to give you the names and addresses of former students who live in your country or area, so you can contact them to get a recommendation. Choose the right course or program. Get advice from your teachers about your level and look for a course which matches your learning needs and level. Ask what the maximum number of students in a class is. We think that a maximum class size of eight students helps to maintain high quality. Check the length of the lessons, they are not always one hour. Sometimes classes are only 40 minutes and rarely do you get 20 hours in the classroom on a 20 -hour course. Find out what extra study facilities are provided. Choose a school with a language laboratory and self-study centre where you can practice what you learn in class. Think about the location of the school. Is it near transport facilities and is there easy access to shops, cinema or theatre? All these things will make your stay more enjoyable. Think about what kind of accommodation you want - living with a family, in an apartment or in a student hostel - and ask the school for full information. Good schools usually employ a full-time accommodation officer who should be able to answer your questions well in advance. Learning at a language school in an English-speaking country is very hard work, so be prepared. Planning and preparing for a study trip takes up a lot of time, so start early. When you have made your travel arrangements let your school know when and how you are arriving.
