COMPETENCE STANDARD 4. Determining the elements and parts of circle and this measurement. BASIC COMPETENCE 4.4 Calculate the length of a common tangent of two circles INDICATORS 1. Determine the properties of angles that formed by tangent lines and the lines that passing on the center point 2. To drawing two tangent lines of circle which passes one point outside the circle and calculate the length of tangent lines that. 3. To calculate the length of a tangent of a point outside a circle. 4. Determine the area of tangent kites. INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES 1. Students are able determine the properties of angles that formed by tangent lines and the lines that passing on the centre point 2. Students are able identify that passes one point at the circle only can be made one tangent line at the circle 3. Students are able calculate the length of a tangent of a point outside a circle 4. Students are able determine the area of tangent kites. CHARACTERISTIC BUILDING 1. Cooperative 4. Careful 2. Courageous 5. Creative 3. Smart 6. Assiduous INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL 1. A tangent lines of circle Look at the Figure 1.1! The circle centered at O, diameter AB perpendicular with diameter CD (line k). if k move aside to right parallel with k then

At k1 position which intersect the circle at 2 points (points E and F) with k1 OB

At k2 position which intersect the circle at 2 points (points G and H) with k2 OB

At k3 position which intersect the circle at 1 point, there is point B (to passes through at B) Therefore line k3 called tangent line of circle. Figure 2. Constructing Tangent Lines to a Circle 1.1 a. Constructing a Tangent Line Passing Through a Point on the Circle Constructing a tangent line passing through a point A on a circle means constructing a line passing through the point A and perpendicular to the radius OA. The step for constructing the tangent line are as follows Construct the circle centered at O and a point A lying on the circle!

Construct a radius OA!

A

Extend the radius OA!

Construct two arcs of a circle centered at A (with radius of less than OA) which intersect OA and its extension at points B and C!

Construct two arcs for each of two circles of equal radius, one centered at B and the other at C, such that an arc of one circle intersects an arc of the other circle at points D and E (the radii of the two circles must be greater than BC)

Join the point R to the point S to obtain a line DE. The line DE is the line tangent to the circle centered at O.

For each point on a circle, only one tangent line passing through that point can be constructed

b. Constructing a Tangent Line Passing Through a Point outside the Circle B Look at the Picture beside! Constructing a line tangent to a circle AB and passing through a point A outside the circle O means constructing a line AB which is perpendicular to the radius OB. Since AB , ABO must be a right angle which is

opposite to OA. For

AOB to be a right angle, construct a circle passing through the

points O, A, and B with OA as its diameter. Remember that the angle opposite to the diameter measures 900. The step for constructing the tangent line are as follows Construct the circle centered at O, and a point A outside the circle!

Join the two points O and A!

Construct two arcs for each of two circles of equal radius, one centered at O and the other at A, such that an arc of one circle intersects an arc of the other circle at points B and C (the radii of the two circles must be greater than OA)

Join the two points B and C to obtain a line which bisects OA at a point D!

Construct a circle which has D as its center and DA as its radius such that is intersects the circle centered at O at points E and F

Join the point A to the points E and F to obtain a line AE and AF which are the tangent lines to the circle centered at O.

Two lines tangent to a circle and passing through the same point outside that circle can be constructed. 3. The Length of a Tangent Line Drawn from a Point Look at the Figure follow!

The line AB is a line which is tangent to the circle at point B. As we have seen previously, the line AB must be perpendicular to the line OB. Thus, OAB is a right triangle.

Since the triangle OAB has right angle at B:

Thus, the length of the tangent line 4. The Kite of Tangent Lines In Figure beside, PA and PB are tangent lines to a circle centered at O. the line AB is a chord. In OAB, OA = OB = radius

Thus, OAB is an isosceles triangle In ABP, PA = PB = radius ABP is an isosceles triangle

Thus,

The quadrilateral OAPB is formed from a combination of the two isosceles triangles OAB and ABP whose bases AB are coincident; thus, the quadrilateral OAPB is akite. Since the side of the kite OAPB consist of two radial line segment and two tangent lines to the circle, the quadrilateral OAPB is called the kite of tangent lines. Area of kite OAPB = 2 x area of OAP

Or Area of kite OAPB = x OP x AB = x d1 x d2
