FIRE DRILL PROCEDURE

(1) The fire alarm The fire alarm should be sounded by the person discovering a fire. The Fire Brigade should be called as soon as possible. All students and staff must evacuate the buildings immediately on hearing the alarm. All students and staff must quickly proceed, via the nearest exit route, to the assembly point on the Jesuit lawn in silence. (2) The assembly point All students must line up in silence in tutor groups on the Jesuit lawn. Staff in the General School Office are responsible for bringing out the registers (including late slips) and the staff signing-out book. Registers should be passed on to the Four Heads of School respectively, or those previously identified as deputising for them. In the absence of one of the Heads of School or a designated deputy to cover absence, the Deputy Headmaster would cover this role, or delegate to another member of staff. The Staff signing out book should be passed on the Director of Sports, or in his absence the Director of Studies. Tutors should assemble and stay with their tutor groups on the Jesuit lawn. Tutors are responsible for checking that their tutees are present against the register and ensuring their good order and conduct throughout the drill. Tutors must report to their Head of School whether their tutees are present or not. The Heads of School should then report to the Headmaster who acts as Fire Officer. If for any reason registers are not brought out of the building, Heads of School should utilise the up-to date Fire Registers located in the Fire Cupboards. These are located outside Pineapple Tower. It is the responsibility of the General Office manager to ensure that these are up to date, and that they also contain the latest daily absence list. Members of staff (teaching and non-teaching) who are not tutors should assemble in front of the main entrance to the Headmasters office. The Facilities Director is responsible for checking his staff. The Director of Sport (or the Director of Studies by arrangement in his absence) is responsible for accounting for the teaching staff. The Headmaster, as fire officer, is responsible for checking the source of the fire, with the assistance of the Estates Manager (or a designated member of the maintenance team in his absence). The Estates Manager should report immediately to the Fire Panel at Pineapple Tower and liaise with the Fire Officer, in the event of the Alarm sounding. Only when the location of the activated sensor is determined, and that it has been ascertained that there is no fire or other danger, should the alarm be silenced. Only the Headmaster can give the all clear allowing the buildings to be re-entered. In the Headmasters absence, the Deputy Headmaster deputises as the fire officer; The CCF Commanding Officer deputises for the Deputy Headmaster. The Fire Officer may decide that despite there being no danger, that the role call process should be should be completed for the purposes of monitoring the effectiveness of the Drill procedure. The Fire Officer should issue written comments in response to the drill, in the immediate aftermath of any alarm, false or otherwise, and circulate these across the Executive Team, heads of School and Housemasters/mistress. (3) Staff signing-out Members of the teaching staff must inform the Deputy Headmaster (or the Director of Studies in his absence) and then signout if they go off-site between 8.30 a.m. and

4.30 p.m. The signing-out book is located in the General School Office, next to the Pineapple Tower entrance. Signing out arrangements cannot be made by telephone. Staff should ensure that all sections are correctly completed, together with an expected time of return and that the book is signed upon return, in order that they can be fully and correctly accounted for in the instance of a fire drill. Staff do not need to sign the book on their afternoon off; part-time staff only need to sign the book if they go off-site at a time when they would normally be in school. (4) Procedures for a night time fire alarm The House staff are responsible for checking procedures at night. Members of House staff who are formally on duty should register or otherwise account for all pupils, Family and staff attached to their respective residential areas. In addition to residential Boarding Heads and their Assistants in each House, Female language/Gap Assistants are attached to Hopkins House and the Male Language/Gap Assistants are attached to Pole House, and Matron is attached to Loyola, for Fire Drill/Alarm purposes. The House Staff member on duty each evening must be informed by other staff attached in this way to their House, if they intend to be off the premises, or otherwise unavailable for assistance. This is essential if all residential staff are to be securely accounted for. Students should leave the building immediately wearing warm clothing/ dressing gown. They should assemble in silence as for a daytime practice on the Jesuit lawn. House staff should frequently remind boarders of the escape routes from their accommodation, which should be posted and clearly visible, and the alternative routes should the main route be blocked. House staff must remind boarders that it is dangerous to listen to a personal stereo in bed. House staff should inaugurate a buddy arrangement where students check the room to their right. It is essential that ALL PERSONS evacuate the building, it should never be assumed that it is safe to leave others in the building as it may be a drill This includes staff using the premises for overnight but not on duty and the families of all staff living within the premises You must always assume that there is a FIRE. People die due to smoke inhalation Fire can spread faster than you can run It is essential that families of House Staff follow the same procedure for their own safety and in order to set a good example. Within the Fire Registration box Pineapple tower wall is a diary with details of any rooms in use within Colliston/Chichester Wing. NB - ALARMS ARE CHECKED EACH WEDNESDAY IN TERM AT 2.00 pm.
