Programs
April and May were exciting months as we launched Hygiene Matters Togo. In the meantime, our programs in South Africa have been moving forward, with wave 2 of AIM and FMP taking place, and progress made on iMatter revisions and trainings.

locations throughout Africa. Mike Zender and Emma Moore visited Togo at the end of May , and attended the rst of two trainings for facilitators. These 12 volunteers from a local church have committed to train 1,200 teachers on Hygiene Matters by the end of September. We are now in the process of collaborating on evaluation aspects of the pilot with the Ministries of Health and Education in preparation for the beginning of the school year in October.

Hygiene Matters
Hygiene Matters has now launched in Togo! We received initial approval for the pilot from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, as well as support from NGOs working locally. This means that we now have clearance to operate in the country and particularly in public schools in Lom. We have also been assigned various representatives from both ministries who will supervise and assist us throughout the Hygiene Matters Facilitators duration of the pilot. This holds major potential for the development of a national hygiene curriculum in Togo and for the spread of much-needed hygiene education materials to similarly needy

South Africa Programs

Wave 2 of Project AIM has been completed, with an overall retention rate of 91%. We have the involvement of local advisory boards, as well as a variety of motivational speakers who share their experiences with participants. Participants continue to indicate that the program has helped them think about their future and has made them feel like they can succeed. Waves 2 and 3 of FMP have been completed at all sites. Nquthu continues to perform extremely well, but Cape Town and Orange Farm sites still struggle with recruitment. HEF leadership has been working with YFC staff and we hope to see improvement in the coming waves. We have had another FMP staff training; however, we again fail to have candidates certied. In light of this repeated frustration, we are modifying candidate recruitment and training practices in order to break this trend. 5 iMatter teacher trainings have taken place and more trainings are planned. Delays in obtaining signed agreements with provincial Departments of Education have slowed the program - without these, it is very difcult to obtain permission for trainings Nevertheless, trainings are scheduled to increase throughout the summer months.

Immediate Needs
While HEF keeps administrative costs low (7% of total budget), this doesnt mean that they are non-existent. We continue to need funding to support ofce activities, including necessary communication elements like this newsletter and the website. We still need Hygiene Matters pilot funding. Current costs are approximately $200,000, or $2/child (cost will decrease to approximately $0.55 per child during regular implementation). HEF values proven program effectiveness, so in addition to program funding we are searching for a qualied consultant to oversee evaluation. 1

Highlights & Opportunities

HEF US May board meeting, approval received for both iMatter and Project AIM protocols.

Highlights
The true highlight of this month has been the launch of Hygiene Matters Togo. The May visit was an amazing time with local volunteers and government workers, whose enthusiasm for Hygiene Matters rivaled our own enthusiasm for the program. It will be meeting a daily need, and caregivers and government ofcials alike are excited to share this with the children of their country. Our May board meeting took place on May 11, and was very well attended. The meeting sparked new plans, including infographics, new fundraising activities, and ideas for Project AIM US. Approval has been received for both iMatter and Project AIM program evaluations. These involve pre and post surveys among program participants in order to measure program efcacy. The iMatter learner survey is set to start in July, and the AIM protocol has begun immediately upon receiving approval.

Program spending was as expected. Hygiene Matters expenses were not yet clearly budgeted seeing as program plans and budgets have still been in development.

Grant Year 5 Program Goals vs. Actuals

Our current grant progress is summarized above. Program delays have clearly had an effect on percentage of plan achieved to date. CDC has made an opportunity available for us to extend our current grant for an extra 6 months. We have been working to prepare program plans and budgets as required to apply for this extension.

Opportunities
As noted in the the March newsletter, a new PEPFAR funding opportunity was recently announced. In collaboration with our South Africa team members, the HEF staff managed to complete the application according to all requirements. It was submitted on April 13 and we have since been awaiting news. There is no specied decision date, and we have not yet received information one way or the other. We remain hopeful that we will be awarded a grant, possibly amounting to $30 million over 5 years. This is a major opportunity for Hope Education to increase its impact in South Africa and provide HIV prevention education to 330,000 FMP and Project AIM participants.
