Music by the Lake will present Gala of Stars:
The Reunion, a review of top hit selections from
the past 12 years of Music by the Lake produc-
tions with original stars and full orchestra on Sat-
urday, July 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ferro Pavilion at
George Williams College. The retrospective of past
Music by the Lake operas, operettas and musical
theatre productions will be coupled with selec-
tions being considered for future seasons. Con-
ductor Christine Flasch and Stage Director Carin
Silkaitis will collaborate on the production.
The show will be presented in a staged, non-
stop, 95-minute format with full orchestra, said
Flasch. It will feature 40 of our original leads. I
couldnt be prouder of our stunning young artists
who now sing all over the world.
The roster of stars includes soprano Seong
Shin Ra who will recreate a spectacular scene
from Madama Buttery. She will be joined by
the full cast from their memorable 2009 perfor-
mance. The Music by the Lake Festival Orchestra
and Chorus will round out the ensemble.
The rst Music by the Lake production was
an opening weekend young artists performance
in July 2001. Several gifted young singers pre-
sented a program of arias and ensembles in the
Allyn Pavilion, closing out the opening weekend
of the festival in grand style. Soon after, Rebecca
Sherrick, President of Aurora University, made a
commitment to feature young artists at Music by
the Lake as the primary focus of future produc-
tions. An exciting performance of La Bohme
followed in 2002 as well as other productions, in-
cluding Brigadoon and Pirates of Penzance.
Available tickets for Gala of Stars: The Re-
union range from $15 to $65. To order, visit mu-
sicbythelake.com or call 866-843-5200 or 262-245-
8501. Outdoor Terrace and Lawn tickets will be
available for purchase at the concert. Picnics and
alcohol are permitted in the Lawn area.
This special performance is generously un-
derwritten by Harold Hartshorne, Jr., Don and
Marilyn Hedberg and The Patrick G. and Shirley
W. Ryan Foundation.
The 13th season of Music by the Lake contin-
ues with:Laurie Berkner Solo: The You and Me
Tour, Sunday, July 21, 4:00 p.m.: Bring a stuffed
animal (for your head) and dancing shoes to this
special concert.
Teatro! Theatrelands First Supergroup,
Saturday, July 27, 7:30 p.m.: From Evita and
Phantom of the Opera to Les Misrables, this
dynamic mens quartet brings musical theatre
roaring back in a show-stopping extravaganza.
The Canadian Brass, Sunday, August 4, 4:00
p.m.: The fabulous ve, imitated by many, is
now in their 31st season of presenting classical,
jazz and pop selections.
An Evening with the Doobie Brothers (SOLD

ary rock band synonymous with a breezy Califor-
nia pop sound take the stage for an electrifying

Every month Yerkes
Observatory offers several
evening observing sessions,
if weather permits. Par-
ticipants age twelve and up
have the opportunity to ad-
mire the night sky, seen with
the unaided eye and through
a large 24-inch diameter re-
ector.
July observing runs from
9:30 until 11:30 p.m. to ensure
it is dark enough, on July 3,
9, 10, and 26. The charge is
$25 per person, payable the
night of the event. Each ses-
sion is limited to a total of
ten, adults and children aged
twelve and up. If you wish to
attend, you will need to make
an advanced reservation by
sending email to: rdd@yer-
kes.uchicago.edu You may
also try calling (262) 245-
5555, ext. 880.
Participants begin out-
side with a brief introduc-
tion to the night sky as seen
with the unaided eye. You
may wish to bring a pair of
binoculars to enhance your
stargazing experience. From
the dark connes of Yer-
kes Observatory, one may
get superb views of planets,
constellations, hundreds of
stars, occasional sporadic
meteor streaks, the Milky
Way, and, occasionally, the
moving, bright International
Space Station or other arti-
cial satellite visible to the
unaided eye.
After observing outside,
we enter the building and
climb 39-steps of a spiral
staircase up into the north-
east tower. Here, through
our 24-inch diameter reec-
tor, we will observe brilliant
ringed Saturn and its moons,
perhaps the Moon, and, some
celestial objects otherwise
invisible to the unaided eye.
Participants should bring
a light jacket or sweatshirt
as we will be spending time
outside and within an un-
heated dome, and even sum-
mer nights may be chilly.

THE RESORTER & REAL ESTATE GUIDE 9 July 4, 2013
resorter notes
Cornerstone Shop & Gallery, Lake Geneva, has been-
named one of Home Accents Todays 50 Retail Stars for 2013
by editors of the premier trade magazine for the home ac-
cents industry. The shop, founded in 1990, is located at 214
Broad Street and is owned by Bruce and Karin Bennett.
The annual list, now in its ninth year, recognizes inde-
pendent brick-and-mortar retailers of home accents, includ-
ing furniture stores and interior design boutiques, that are
creative in their merchandising, have a positive presence in
their local communities and are distinguishing themselves
from the competition. The Retail Stars list is not a ranking,
and is not based on sales volume.
Retail is not for the faint of heart, even in the best of
times. The retailers on this list serve as role models to us
all, not just because they were strong in the good times, but
especially so because they have persevered through the bad.
The economic downturn certainly took its toll on every retail
sector, but beyond that, the e-commerce outlets and chain
stores have stepped up their games, making independent re-
tail even more challenging, said Jenny Heinzen York, editor
in chief of Home Accents Today. The 2013 Retail Stars have
faced down those challenges through an artful combination
of innovation, customer service, marketing, merchandising
and good old-fashioned hard work. We celebrate these suc-
cessful merchants and encourage everyone to support the
local businesses in their own areas.
Cornerstone Shop and Gallery

ources differ on the mileage
of the Geneva Lake shore
path. But everyone agrees
that the walk is worth it.
The path, which is open to the pub-
lic, circles the entire lake and affords
hikers the chance to experience pan-
oramic views, both of Geneva Lake and
the grand estates that dot its shore-
line.
From its origins as a trail connect-
ing Native American settlements to its
present-day usage as a public hiking
attraction, the shore path has timeless
appeal. At over 21 miles, the length
can seem intimidating, but there are a
number of ways to break the walk up
into smaller segments.
Path access is available from down-
town Lake Geneva to the south shore
near the intersection of Campbell St.
and Wrigley Dr. and to the north shore
through Library Park. Shore path con-
ditions range from easy, level sidewalks
to steeper, rougher terrain.
Estimated walking time for the en-
tire circuit is between eight and nine
hours, depending on pace and weather
conditions.
Points of interest include Stone
Manor, the largest lakeshore home;
the Wrigley estate, a home built in the
style of Frank Lloyd Wrights Falling
Waters; and the historic Lake Geneva
Yacht Club.
You can take in the sights on foot
or on the water; either way, the shore-
line of Geneva Bay affords breathtaking
views of some of the lakes most histor-
icand preservedestates. Many of
the original mansions have been razed,
but others retain their original dignity.
Two homes dominate the opposite
sides of Geneva Bay: Stone Manor,
originally Younglands, and Wadsworth
Hall, originally The Stenning. Dozens of
other Geneva Bay properties draw the
eye, but these two provide the most
vivid images of a bygone era.
The Italian marble palace is best
known as Stone Manor, but the struc-

ture was originally named
Younglands. Otto Young
built it on the Moorings
estate site as the 19th
century turned to the
20th as a dream home
for his wife.
The Manor remains
the largest home on the
lakeshore. It has a sto-
ried legacy: a private
residence, an Episcopal
Church school for girls,
a rooming house and a
sheriffs auction property.
It nally was converted to
hold more than a half-
dozen residential condo-
miniums.
Follow the southern
segment of the lakeshore
path to reach Stone Man-
or, which is only a few
minutes walk from down-
town. Past Stone Manor,
Geneva Bay properties
continue to just beyond
the Lake Geneva Country
Club.
Head west on the
path from the library and
Riviera to get a look at
Wadsworth Hall, which is
located about 2 1/2 miles
from town.
Wadsworth Hall has
also been named the
Stenning and the Drie-
haus Estate/Glanworth
Gardens. The Roman
Neo-classic structure was
built in the early 1900s
and the current owner,
Richard Driehaus, has
renovated both the man-
sion and its grounds and
revived the estates social
calendar with extravagant
parties and charitable
fundraisers.

T
he rich history
of the shore
path and the
residences, parks, camps
and burial mounds along
it has been well chroni-
cled. Self-guided tour
pamphlets and books
abound.
Its very gratifying
to walk and match the
booklets description to
the mansion in front of
you, or say to yourself,
The Elgin Club is next,
and have it conrmed by
a sign a few steps later.
Its even more gratifying
to have walked the path
enough times to be able
to predict what mansion
lies around the bend,
and remember bits of its
history. With a pedom-
eter, a bag packed with a
camera, guidebook, pen
and paper and you can
set out on your own jour-
ney around the lake.
1250-1500: Covenant
Harbor Bible Camp. Origi-
nally the estate Snug Harbor
(owned by the George Stur-
ges family), this property
gives you a good feel for
how much acreage the rst
lakeshore families bought
for their estates.
1500: Covenant Harbor
ends. Ive always noticed a
lot of people turning around
at this point, probably
because an expanse of lawn
lies ahead, with no clear
path. Somewhere around
here there was an estate
called Butternuts. Id never
heard of it before today and
would have denied its exis-
tence if asked.*
1870: Geneva Bay
Association. Many of the
old estates have been par-
celed off, so that miles of
shoreline property are taken
up by associations, clubs or
subdivisions.
2064: The more ower
species I know, the older I
feel. Here, weve got some
hydrangeas, hostas, cone-
owers and black-eyed
susans, which makes me
The following is an excerpt from
Resorter editor Jessica Franzenes record
of a walk along the north shore of the
path from Lake Genevas Library Park to
Villa Hortensia in September 2012.
Step 1: The Geneva Lake Association sign: a
marker on every public entrance to the lake shore
path.
Step 89: Hard to chronicle a journey when youve
forgotten a pen. I had to park all the way back at
Maxwell and Dodge streets, and I really dont want
to go back to the car. Fortunately, its Labor Day
weekend there are lots of lakeshore families using
their properties for the last party of the season. I ask
a group if I can borrow a pen. Bob Aspinall hunts
one down and reminds me to do a write-up on the
antique boat show on the weekend of Sept. 25 to 27
at the Abbey Resort. Before I leave, Im offered: 1)
a beer; 2) my choice of two pens; and 3) ham, if I
come back later when its ready.
Step 501: The original mansion at Maple Lawn
(right) was built in 1871 and torn down a few years
ago. The Sturges family, Chicago, owned the estate
and made good use of the expansive lawns that now
sweep up to the new residence, with parties and
games. (photo from Lake Geneva in Vintage Post-
cards.)
Steps 5681250: These are the grounds of
former estates: Fairelds, Linden Lodge (now the
Geneva Manor subdivision) and Rehoboth. The
houses now range from Victorian to Prairie Style and
are pretty close together.

almost 40. On this path you stop to admire both

natural and man-made beauty. Do the estates
carefully cultivated owerbeds fall into the former
or latter category?
2180: This stretch is the rst remotely rigorous
part of the walk. The path becomes more rustic and
hilly. I cant believe I used to bike this. (Biking is no
longer allowed on the path. It may never have been,
come to think of it.)
2583: A good view of the lake from this little
bluff. Im standing on a bowling-ball sized rock
thats embedded in the middle of the dirt path.
Walkers have to either step over it or on it, because
the path is only about a foot wide at this point. So,
ever since this rock emerged from the soil, every
person who has walked this path has noted it and
made a decision: step over this rock, or on it? Its
not quite Blarney Stone- or Ayers Rock-level fame,
but still a respectable showing, especially in a state
where icebergs deposited billions of boulders.
2604: Northwoodside This house was built in
1876 by Henry Strong and to be frank, Ive always
thought it was Green Gables.* Upon reection, it
appears that I was wrong about the homes name
due to being wrong about what a gable is (see
illustration at left). Northwoodside was one of the
many lakeshore properties purchased by the Wrigley
family from 1911 to today.
2890: The stairway with the stag statues (one
facing the lake, one the home) leads to Hillcroft.
The property was used for hunting in the 1800s. A
man is out on the lawn and I think about asking him
why the stags face different ways, but I dont want
to be nosy.
2965: This is Green Gables. (You can see why
I was confused. The original, gabled mansion was
torn down in 1955 and replaced with the current
residence.) The estate, previously known as Blyth
PHIL BONYATA/THE RESORTER
Bonnie, was built in the late 1800s by J.M. Horton. William
Wrigley Jr. purchased the property in 1911, after interim
owners had renamed it and renovated the home.
3215: A great blue heron.
3360: The Green Gables boathouse. This is one of the
original Green Gables outbuildings.
3427: Lakewood is the white stucco home between the
Green Gables boathouse and Deadwood (see step 3481). Built
in 1892, the home was originally named Waldeck.
3481: The structure at Deadwood is a boathouse (and now
a residence, too), rst built to accommodate the owners and
his neighbors vessels.
3579: Every time I walk here I hear an intermittent,
high-frequency sound. It must be from something electrical
like lighting or an alarm system. I cant pinpoint its source. If
anyone has heard it and/or knows what it is, give me a call.
3600-3750: Wychwood. The standing home is what
remains of the original 1901 Tudor manor, which rose three
stories, the better to overlook the little cove and island that
make this my favorite property on the lake. The Wrigleys have
owned Wychwood since 1957.
3750: Met the Whiting and Roe families from Elgin, Ill.
They were taking the Harrisons, from Liverpool, England, for
a walk along the shore. Theyd gone from Lake Geneva to Wil-
liams Bay and were heading back when I stopped them for a
picture.
3860: Villa Hortensia. It was built in 1906 for Edward
Swift, who named it for his wife Hortense. This place has its
own microclimate; it seems to me the path is always about 10
degrees hotter here than before or after it. Maybe its power of
suggestion due to the Italian renaissance architecture, red tile
roof and the villa in the name. This is a traditional turning-
around point for me, mostly because the heat makes me think
about the long walk back to Library Park, past stuff Ive already
looked at. This time around, I keep going, with a borrowed pen,
my $5 pedometer and the assurance that my dad will give me
a ride back to my car when I get to my destination.

Geneva Lake Shorepath
One of the most popular ways to get out-
doors in the summer is to take advantage
of the famed Geneva Lake shore path that
circumnavigates the 5,264 acre spring-fed
pond.
The genesis of this one-of-a-kind path
dates back to the region's earliest settlers
who created trails to connect the many
Native American camps. Today, these foot-
paths are part of a 21-mile walking trail that
can be explored in seven segments, each
between two and three-and-one-half miles
long.
According to the Geneva Lake
Conservancy, many of the original landown-
ers retained a staff of gardeners or profes-
sional landscape designers including Olaf
Benson, a landscape architect for the City
of Chicago; Jens Jensen, superintendent of
Chicago's Humboldt Park and the Olmsted
Brothers, designers of Chicago's Grant Park
and whose partnership was descended from
the practice of Frederick Law Olmsted,
"the father of landscape architecture in
America," and one of the architects behind
Central Park in New York City.
Geneva Lake shoreline on Main Street. Picnicking is permitted. The library itself
is built on land which was deeded to the city in 1894. The prairie-style library was
dedicated in 1954.
Located in the heart of downtown Lake
Geneva, Donian Wetland Preserve is made
up of protected flood plain. The White River
flows through the preserve.

THE RESORTER & REAL ESTATE GUIDE July 4, 2013
Keeping weeds at bay
Weeds in a lawn or gar-
den can be an unsightly and
potentially unhealthy nui-
sance.
No gardener enjoys
seeing weeds spring up
throughout his or her care-
fully planted garden, as such
uninvited guests rob a well-
tended garden of its aesthet-
ic appeal. In addition, weeds
can steal valuable water
and nutrients from plants,
prohibiting their growth as
a result.
Homeowners who un-
derstand how harmful weeds
can be can prevent them in a
variety of ways.
Where weed growth is
insignicant, it might be
possible to simply pull them
out of the ground before they
can do any substantial dam-
age. In areas of heavy weed
growth, however, a more
concentrated effort must
be made to prevent further
weed growth once the weeds
have been removed. The fol-
lowing are a few ways hom-
eowners can prevent weeds
from growing throughout
their lawns.
Be proactive. Prevent-
ing weed growth is a pro-
active job, so homeowners
want to be proactive to keep
weeds from infesting their
property.
Proper and routine lawn
maintenance might be all it
takes. Add quality topsoil
to your lawn or garden to
produce a healthier surface
that makes it more difcult
for weeds to grow. As the
season progresses, continue
to maintain your lawn by
mowing and watering.
Aerate the soil at the on-
set of the season. Aerating
your lawn at the dawn of the
mowing season helps break
up soil that grew compacted
over the winter.
Once aerated, the soil
can disperse nutrients,
oxygen and water more ef-
fectively, allowing healthier
roots to grow and reducing
the risk of weed growth as a
result.
Fertilize the lawn. Fer-
tilizer helps grass grow
in thick and dense, which
leaves little to no room for
the growth of weeds. While
fertilizer does not neces-
sarily guarantee that weeds
wont grow, it does go a
long way toward helping a
lawn grow in healthy, and
a healthy lawn is often a
weeds worst enemy. Some
fertilizers on the market
are a combination of fertil-
izer and weed preventer,
and such products might be
ideal for homeowners who
are especially concerned
about weed growth. The
lifespan of weed preventers
varies, so keep in mind that
you might need to reapply
a weed preventer in a few
months to keep getting the
same results. Fertilizing is
typically done twice a year,
once in the spring and again
in the fall.
Lay down landscape
fabric. Landscape fabric is
another weed prevention
alternative that can prevent
weed growth for several
years. Before laying down
landscape fabric, which is
perhaps most commonly
used in ower beds, remove
all weeds and other vegeta-
tion you do not wish to grow.
You will likely need to cut
the fabric to the area you
want it to cover and cut an
opening for plants and ow-
ers.
The fabric is then typi-
cally covered with mulch,
which keeps the fabric in
place.
Landscape fabric is ef-
fective because it blocks
the sun from reaching any
area that its covering while
still allowing air, water and
nutrients to penetrate and
reach the soil. Weeds need
sun to grow, so landscape
fabric can be highly effective
at preventing weed growth.
Weeds are an unsightly
nuisance that homeowners
would prefer to do without.
Preventing weed growth is
relatively easy, and, in many
cases, your efforts can bear
fruit through the entire sea-
son.
When removing weeds,
its best to remove the weeds
with their roots. Smaller
weeds with shallow roots
can typically be removed
with a gentle pull and the
roots will come right out
with the weed.
Larger weeds with
deeper roots can be a little
tougher to remove, and they
might damage surrounding
plants if you pull too hard. In
such instances, dig around
the stem with a small hoe
to loosen the soil and then
rmly pull the weed out of
the ground. If that does not
work, dig a little deeper and
try again.
When there are simply
too many weeds to pull out
of the ground, a garden hoe
is effective for shallow-root-
ed weeds.
Where deep-rooted
weeds are present, a garden
hoe is less effective because
it does not usually reach
the roots. Awinged weeder,
though more time-consum-
ing than a hoe, goes deep-
er into the soil to pull the
roots.
Chemical weed-killers
are another option, though
they are not very eco-friend-
ly and chemical products
must be sprayed on the en-
tire weed to kill it complete-
ly.
Succulent plants can be
a boon to a homeowner with-
out the time or resources to
maintain plants. Succulents
get their name from their
primary function, which is
drawing up and storing wa-
ter.
Succulents are able to
thrive in arid conditions,
and there are more than 300
different types, including
some exotic species.
The advantages to plant-
ing succulents are many.
Because they store water in
their stems, roots and leaves,
this reduces the number of
times an owner must water
them. Succulents can go
several days between water-
ings. Succulents, like cacti,
that have few if any leaves,
are perhaps best at manag-
ing water because they lose
little to evaporation through
the foliage.
Succulents are particu-
larly good to have in areas
prone to arid temperatures
or where water restrictions
are often in place. They can
be environmentally friendly
because of their ability to
conserve water. Succulents
treat water as a precious
resource, and their entire
makeup is designed to mini-
mize consumption of water.
Because they thrive in
sunlight, succulents can be
the ideal plants to put in ex-
tremely sunny and hot loca-
tions. They will not wither
and dry out due to extreme
heat. For particularly dry
areas of landscape or where
soil is subpar, consider the
placement of different vari-
eties of succulents to create
a varied and eye-catching
display.
There are many other
advantages to planting suc-
culents; some of which in-
clude:
Succulents offer con-
trasts in shape, texture and
colors. With the many vari-
eties, youre bound to nd
something interesting and
different to add to the land-
scape.
Whether you have ample
acreage in the yard or sim-
ply some containers avail-
able for planting, succulents
will thrive. They grow just
as well in containers as they
do in the ground.
Succulents dont tend
to require pruning or cut-
ting back of the plant. With
this in mind, you can expect
them to grow large.
Therefore, space the
plants adequately to allow
for growth.
Succulents are perenni-
als. So once you plant them,
they should last for years
and years without the hassle
and expense you can expect
from planting annuals every
year.
Indoor greenhouses or
sunrooms can be another
good place for succulents.
They prefer not to get
chilled, which makes a con-
trolled environment advan-
tageous.
When considering a
spot for your succulents,
choose areas that get plenty
of sun. Think about prun-
ing back or removing trees
that would create too much
shade on the succulents.
Space the succulents widely
apart -- more so than you
would with other plants -- to
allow them to spread.
Pebbles or gravel make
good mulching material
around succulents so that
drainage will be adequate. It
will also set the succulents
apart from other plants by
contextualizing them in
your garden.
Visit a gardening center
or home improvement store
to learn more about the
myriad types of succulents
that can add beauty to most
gardens.
