Follow Jayaramachandran Jayaramachandran (Aka) Jay, CISM e-education needs to only be an alternate. Being in a room physically and talking to each other is as important for education to be complete. Are we planning to live completely virtual life? The negatives of e-education is that it becomes individualistic in nature. Person A pays the money, goes to a portal, learns it - This aspect is individual in nature.He/She may interact using webcam and virtual board rooms later. Knowledge may be shared when the membership to the portals get shared which may be for a social cause but would amount to fraud due to controls and checks. 1 month ago Like

Follow subrat kumar subrat kumar prusty.ITS ................................................... Kartikeyanji, thanks to all those professors who are contributing to NPTEL. I am seriously advocating to make them more interesting and user friendly. Educational institutes should open their infra for students to access their labs in off hours with a minimum price which can be affordable to very poor students also Language issue can be taken up in phase II, since now there are enough students who have already learnt English. But how we want at the out put ? What should be the time for the fruit to be ripe ? Can we prepare more experts who will be prepared may be in less time ? Can we redesign the educational subjects so that employability can be enhanced ? The Grass root innovators should concentrate on Indian languages since it is the main root for better communication. As a step let the team of professors of NPTEL make the courses available in all Indian languages also. But since the broadband network is going to be laid may be within next 6 months, we may have to give more stress on e-education contents in a time bound manner. 1 month ago Like 1

With e-education and all information available at the click of a button, one can easily visualize the unlimited possibilities and immense potential for imparting uniform and high quality education to

We are made to believe that internet-based courses can be efficient and ultimately an inexpensive way to deliver quality education, and cater to the vast numbers of learners, anytime, anywhere, without any in congruence. Follow Prof. Anil Prof. Anil Aggarwal I agree with the Blog-post by Arun Kottolli that E-Learning has not taken off in India for several reasons that range from faulty technology to government regulations. The failure of E-Learning can be greatly attributed to wrong technology. The current PC & Web based technology is not suited for Indian conditions. The current technologies used in E-Learning were all developed in America and is not suitable for India & other developing countries. 1 month ago Like 1

Follow Jayaramachandran Jayaramachandran (Aka) Jay, CISM Before considered education electronically, it may be important to consider education as a product/commodity. To elaborate on the perspective, we all know how a new mobile or a movie gets released globally within few days. If education can be considered as a product, before its given out, then all differences in education standards/levels will be decreased and then can be released in a service model. Using electronic communication would be helpful in dissemination. Considering education as a product and then developing technology around it may have global impact and hence would appreciate if global private players in technology can considered it further. The end objective of such a technology solution would be Learn anything, in any age, any time, any where - based on the person's assimilation strengths and adhering to age limits (laws) Additionally may have the potential to "break" the heirarchy within educaton - Complete Knowledge System 1 month ago Like 1

Follow Sandip Sandip Bhatia Education, whether in Gurukuls, Schools, or Universities has traditionally been instructor/teacher led. In fact Taxila and Nalanda are some of the oldest names that come to mind. For instance Taxila, which dates to 600 BC, in North West Pakistan that I visited 13 years ago required students to stay in the dormitories if they had to get educated.

Content was traditionally transferred through the word of mouth and thus training and education practice required physical presence of the guru and shishyas. The revolution that the printing industry created resulted in diminishing the role of the teacher as the repository of content. The teacher facilitated the transfer of knowledge and the students studied and acquired knowledge through books even at their homes. This is set to change yet again as the content, context, and interpretation that required a class-room setting can be improvised over the real time audio-video capability of the web. The consequence of this capability is that good education is not necessarily the purview of a few privileged. The content is no longer the king but the network to which one will belong. The network space will be the ultimate E-Learning value-addition and will call the shots. 1 month ago Like 2

ParveenUnfollow Parveen Bansal From academic perspective, Open contents policy followed by education institutions like IIT and stanford will make sure that availability of quality contents will not be a constraint. From experience perspective, loads of information is available in internet world about their experiences in diverse set of consequences. What will change in the next 20 years: From education provider perspective, selection of relevant contents from user perspective and its delivery. That means it will become solution oriented. From student perspective - what is valuable is the relevant contents and how it is presented. Challenge at the end of student will be to find and select suitable service provider / contents. E education and virtual conferences will reduce the need for face to face discussion but will not eliminate the same. Successful service providers will ensure mixed delivery system with the right proportion of e education and face to face education. 1 month ago Like

Follow Dinesh Dinesh Kumar Its the e-education, which is the ongoing trend atleast for the higher education now. Look at Stanford, Harvard, IIT's IIM's all have introduced either web based learning programs or some technology enabled sessions using VSAT and such technologies. They become important especially when the world is converging by technology, and people don't have time to quit jobs and at the same time they want to learn something new. However at the same time, these programs aren't well recognized by the industry. Though they never deny the legitimacy of these programs, but at the same time, these aren't given due credit either. The reason might be the selection process or the evaluation process of these programs. But whatever be the case, the e-education has made some impact already and there's a long way to go ahead. At the same time, i'll like to mention the e-education programs using cloud computing, in some of the southern states. I have been involved with one such program, that is a part of our CSR, but i can see some of the success and the real efforts are being put in for that. 1 month ago Like

Laying of the optical fibre for high speed broadband ::::::::::::::: continuing The education contents in all Indian languages::::::::::::::: PRIORITY ??? Any suggestions ??? 1 month ago Like

Follow Dinesh Dinesh Kumar Regarding the basic infrastructure, we do have it available in many Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities. However still the optical fibre connectivity of all the Homes (FTTH) is still a distant dream. I don't know why the work is stalling. Though many private builders are providing fibers direct to Flats, but the penetration rate is still very low. I think the high cost of laying fibers, coupled with the slow process of approvals could be one major factor in that. Earlier in my carrier i had worked as a Liaison for the approval of Fiber laying from different authorities, and believe me its a big pain in the neck. State owned, BSNL has existing infrastructure, which could had been used in many meaningful ways, but the Red tape restricts that, i think. If i had to put priority, i'll say that Basic infrastructure building should have foremost priority. If we have high speed internet available at the innermost villages, we can deliver the content. There are many content providers currently, and some of it is open sourced too. And once we have the basic infrastructure ready, the second priority should be to make the content available in regional languages. I was associated with Bharti Foundation some time back, and was doing volunteer work in translating the books for kids. So there could be many volunteers available, who can do the same. But the priority should be to establish strong basic infrastructure. 1 month ago Like 1

Follow subrat kumar subrat kumar prusty.ITS .......................................................... Thanks Dinesh, as the basic infra is going to be in place for accessing internet may be within 6 to 12 months, should we not focus on e-education contents ?

What should be our objective as far as our education is concerned ? How we should rate talent... when info just needs a search engine to get it ? How do you want to write a better essay on environment protection.... when all the best essays have already been written by all experts and is available for re-arranging. Should we give stress on more factual essay on environment protection or should we give importance to the students who are trying to implement the projects protecting the environment ? Should we give importance to the words or how those words can convey meaning practically ? Should the students experiment with objects directly taking the help of internet to design a product or still we will be stuck up in down loading them in the examination papers.................? Can we think of education on those lines with ICT ? 1 month ago Like 1

Follow Dinesh Dinesh Kumar @Subrat Sir, i totally agree with you. With Infrastructure in place, the next step is obviously the content. And the content itself is very important. I am of the favor of a revolution in our education system, which needs to be changed from class room

teaching to more experimental based education. The emphasis should not be on the words, rather on the applicability and practical aspects of those words. When a student has to write an essay on environmental protection, we shouldn't see the flowery language or the twist of the words, it should be practical lessons, that could be implemented. The practicals in the classrooms shouldn't be limited only to a formality, rather they should contribute in the development of students. Students should be allowed to experiment, they should be allowed to think beyond the conventional approach. For instance a farmer in India, tweaked many day to day usable gadgets, and he has many patents in his name. There are a lot of learning to learn from people around. From the farmers, from dabba wallahs of Mumbai etc. The e-education will be successful only when we'll be able to show the right direction. The concept of open book, open laptop, open internet exams is still a new one and only implemented in IITs currently, however it is a concept that can be taken beyond it. Students need to work on the approaches, fundamentals and applications, and not only cram the books and vomit on the day of exam. But still it has a long way to go, and i don't know when we'll see that day. 1 month ago Like

Follow subrat kumar subrat kumar prusty.ITS I think different educational TV channels and also e-learning websites which are either launched by government or by private should clearly earmark the following with a view to optimize the experience for students a) sequence of videos to be watched to learn and give exam on a particular subject. b) For skill upgradation which are the sequence of expertise c) For practical exposure when they will get time slot in lab through internet d) location of nearest lab for student who has enrolled in e-education e) the exam schedule to take up the online exam f) what are the sequence of courses and classes which can lead to a particular degree g) what is expected from a student who has learned a particular subject in certain language h) option of learning all Indian languages should be available to students

i) Like teaching YOGA by swami Ramdev in the early morning, the students can start doing yoga through TV in various halls and also in parks or open spaces j) involvement of community is definitely going to help k) The people who are tech-savy should tell even uneducated to learn through video l) The end objective should be focussed for skill upgradation m) rememebring of more and more number of people should be avoided. Follow Ramkumar Ramkumar Ganesan Technology is always an enabler and applying them in education and learning is not a bad idea. The blended model ( A class room for more of setting the objective of learning and clarificatory in nature to help student learn quickly and enable them to learn off classroom). However, this is not the main benefits of adaptive learning (more appropriate then e-learning) 1) The students can have more relevant assignments and assessments that leads to a smaller chunk of unlearnt thing that can be easily addressed by the teacher/coach/mentors 2) It is not possible to provide everyone a lab time during college or school time and this can be achieved through virtual labs/ code assist/ any other relevant tools 3) Collaborative learning and the ability to use the best resources available within college, across colleges in a country, across edu ins globally 4) In higher education, a student is expected to do additional courses or assignments or real time projects based on his / her career or life's ambition and if an education-cum-social-cum-political systems allows it, then we see a better tomorrow for all of us 5) When people talk about India, they still think of our limitations than our strengths. Follow Vasan Vasan K S S Subrat, Yes. Education system in our Country really needs a complete change. Present system has affected the natural, socio economic, cultural & traditional values of our Country when we compare them with the Original equation of our Country. GDP, economic growth, inflation & so many other evolved terminologies are alien to us which are of no use to us when we compare them with the contented natural lifestyle our earlier generations experienced. There is a saying in Kannada language - Desha sutti nodu. Kosha odi thili - which means, roam the whole nation (to gain practical knowledge), read scriptures to realize. How appropriate it was ? No amount of alien influence either directly or indirectly can help us to revive & restore our original equation of our Country through education but, we will be further deviating from our path. So, we have to analyse the situation in its "as it is" state. One ten members team of the first generation of Indian Ambassadors have started an educational Institutions in ten different places in India but, these are all fractional participation compared to the magnitude of the situation. Mr. Siddarthacharri, Ex Ambassador & founder of one of the educational institution at Mysore says, present education is only INDUCATION. This system is trying to make everyone informative but, no amount of information can make a person THINK TANK. It can only make him/them INFORMATION TANK. Information without computing capacity which is reflected as nature is too far away to have any co relation with the induced & imposed system. I also remember vaguely about Henry Ford's daughter about her expressions when she was asked by her school teacher to write an essay about A LIFE OF A POOR PERSON. That child could not do any justification as she was not exposed to that environment at all. Likewise, we can depend on the technology transfer to exponentially reaching people both in rural & urban sector but, i am not sure about the relevance about the vision & expressions of IIT's in this regard to restore the situation. I am expressing with helpless feeling & not to jeopardize anyone's feelings. So, no offense meant. I remembered another sequence which was expressed in a movie. I watched the movie in 1983 "Whose life is it anyway", where a paralyzed artists remarks about beautiful breasts of a Doctor. There is no vulgarity but, helplessness in projecting it with his artistic sense. We need a rural based educational system where we can educate (not inducate) our younger generation to realize the QUALITY OF RURAL LIFE WITH A COMPREHENSIVE DIMENSION. vasan. The Five Elements. Follow Praveen Praveen Srivastava It has been great to follow the discussion. I feel the change is certainly needed but at what cost? Are we getting drifted away from the basics of education.?................... Coaching Institutes came up because teaching standards in schools have gone down. In Engineering Colleges, mainly it is the self study-----even IITs are 40 % less staffed. E-education came up because there is a shortage of good teachers at all levels and everywhere. All colleges are in cutting cost mode. However, abundance of material is available on internet. Too much of availability of knowledge also leads to knowledge paralysis----ie; how to manage the available knowledge. Along with these, the distrctions are too much. Students are losing humane approach in this rat race hence the generation is becoming intolerant in the competitive world what with the breaking up of joint family system where emotional support was available. Hence, a basic classroom teaching system is still relevant supported by additional inputs. Students should know the focus and relevant areas rather than getting bogged down by the irrelevant information. Every information is not meant for everyone. So managing the knowledge is important but it is not in everyone's capability. That is where they need to be guided by an able and knowledgable teacher. We have still not exploited the available of retired people who have time at their disposal to teach but are not considered fit enough to teach because they have attained the age of sixty years and donot hold B.Ed degree. Many of them are ready to teach without or minimal compensation. Their services can be utilised for teaching poor people. We must not forget that getting a good mentor or GURU is the requirement which very few of us get in our lifetime and the journey never ends even when we have finished our studies. So, before e-education and other add-ons, let us build up infrastructure to support the basics of education. EDUCATION must be separated from LITERACY. 1 month ago Unlike 3

" EDUCATION must be separated from LITERACY. " additional thoughts , ......... bit more elaboration on the above will do a lot good for better understanding Thanks. .1 month ago

Follow Praveen Praveen Srivastava Getting a degree is LITERACY which is just not enough. You can get it from anywhere. EDUCATION is all about the whole personality accompanied by degree. That is why when one goes for an interview for a career profile requiring Leadership qualities, they look for something more than a degree. Even many companies are so focussed that they want to employ people from a particular college only because of the culture of that college although it doesnot guarantee the existence of required qualities in the candidate but they are so convinced about the product. Many companies outrightly reject candidates if they have not attended full time MBA course hence degree through correspondence course is of no value as if it has been bought off the shelf. So, EDUCATION is the holisitc profile of a person and it includes:- manners, etiquettes, communication ability, handling of relationships, EQ, problem-solving capability, time management etc. This can be better achieved through good upbringing in moral terms, appropriate grooming and values of similar nature. It does not cost money but certainly consumes time and passion. 1 month ago Unlike 2

Follow Praveen Praveen Srivastava I donot know as to what all changes will take place in the next 20 years but Of course, the experiments and changes will continue and I would rather focus on what is right/correct since it has become a practise to make a business out of education. India badly needs strengthening of Primary education for all whether in urban area or in rural. If the country cannot provide a good foundation in primary education, how one can expect good quality infrastructure in terms of educated young generation. For impatient and intolerant youngsters, life seems to be T20 match while it is not so. Life is like a SERIES with Test Matches in between and this needs to be drilled into everyone's mind. Quality EDUCATION can provide insight into their mind with long and short term strategies for their own life. Unfortunately, politicians are not interested in Primary Education as they apprehend that they will lose the vote bank if the population becomes more aware and educated-------they can be questioned. Have you ever seen any politician setting up any good primary school as a public service in rural areas, however, they can be seen setting up UNIVERSITIES and costly PUBLIC SCHOOLS in urban areas which acts as a milking cow. Even corporate houses run costly public schools. They can also establish good quality primary schools as a part of CSR activity. I believe-few are in existence. 1 month ago Like

But many are involved in cracking different competitive examinations like IIT JEE or Civil services examinations......... May be we need a step forward.... Organizations like NTPC,SAIL,BSNL,ONGC or even private companies etc should come up with e-education curriculum which can make students ready for future oriented employment. I have witnessed it when my friend who got associated with Wipro Group in promote education in rural sector. After some time, he realized through the beneficiaries (children), Wipro was promoting much of their product range, in the name of hygiene. So, Doordarshan is a good choice. I never ever try to evolve any new infrastructure at all, as they are both time consuming & will only become parallel system to already existing infrastructure. So, why do not we explore the possibility of introducing new course curriculum on several aspects of rural sector, with a comprehensive approach to retain the rural children & youth in rural sector itself, with the help of the existing schools. We can include the dimension of functioning NGO's in this regard to strengthen the system. vasan. The Five Elements. Mysore. 29 days ago Like 1

Follow subrat kumar subrat kumar prusty.ITS Thanks Vasanji, The students those who are reading in class 5th to class 10th in different schools will face the challenges of ICT and e-education as they will grow with technology. Doordarsan is also going towards convergence. Soon many of its contents will be available in internet also. For learning of classical dances, classical songs and classical traditional practices in Agriculture and other associated activities the recorded program can work like reference multimedia e-books for students. The architecture of different temples of India and their descriptions will give architects and civil engineers a reference guide for Vastu and other related technologies. What we need is to make the community of different professionals alive and connected through the internet as well as offline communities. Geography needs to be told not only by the physical teacher present in the school but also by our friends in those geographical areas may be through their recorded videos. For example while studying about Russia we can refer to the videos of Russia. Google earth has really helped in many such aspects. Follow David David Wittenberg Although I'm working personally to improve the post-secondary education sector here in India, I'd like to see primary and secondary education improve as well. Digital technology can certainly help, but I think two other changes -- both attitudinal -- will be far more important if we are to achieve our potential to be counted among the world's leading countries in education: 1) Mr. & Mrs. Middle Class Urban India will need to start believing that it is their responsibility to assure that every Indian child, rural and urban, receives an excellent education. 2) Indian educationalists, parents and employers will need to start believing that the ability to think critically is more important than the ability to memorize facts. To the extent that these changes take place, we will see the number of schools and teachers increase and the quality of instruction be transformed. Within 25 years, e-learning will be a valuable and widespread tool, but it will not replace face-to-face teaching. The more important transformation will be studentcentered classrooms where children are engaged and learning to think critically. 26 days ago Like

Follow subrat kumar subrat kumar prusty.ITS Information is the starting point for any learning. Many times the info captured qualitatively and sometimes quantitatively by our seses. For example on the first instance our eye can tell whether there is impurity in the water or not. Next we may smell it or taste it to collect its appropriateness for drinking. But an educated person will take it to the laboratory to tell how much arsenic, how much sulphur and how much poisonous substances are there in the water. Another educated person may investigate how it has been pollutted in its way from Himalyas to Ocean. Another educated person may try to filter the poisonous substances using scientific instruments and there by producing the desired info that the poisons are under limit. In all the cases education teaches that for life somebody shouldnot drink poisonous water. But what happens on the side of the river, our educated students sing the beautiful songs ..... Follow Niranjan Niranjan Agarwal Very good points and extremely interesting discussion on e-education & Entrepreneurial drive.

Entrepreneurial drive and capacity building by: a) Experiential Learning: Education needs to be experiential and in line with the problems/issues faced in real industries or ecosystem. Being from Babson- this was something was found in our curriculum, classroom, cases and the complete ecosystem b) Involving people who have been there and done that: Entrepreneurial drive and capacity building can be driven hugely by people who are extremely passionate about it, been there and have done that. Who teach out of passion and to multiply the impact rather than only monetary benefits. About e-education: E-education in the form of education through various media(web, radio, TV etc.)- will act as a supplementary material or complimentary material to classroom learning in schools or K12 education. With EdX, CourseEra etc.- I think availability of quality education from some of the world's best is only becoming easier and far more reachable geographically.. 14 days ago Like 1

Follow Niranjan Niranjan Agarwal a) e-education policy should also be funded as a part of govt's budget for teacher's salaries, infrastructure etc or PPP should be encouraged for mutual benefits b) e-education body should be formed, which should include people from industry( content companies, e-learning, e-books, tablets, mobiles, ICT etc), government officials, and specialists. b) Assessment and measurement mechanisms for tracking impact of e-education on students skill growth, financing and benefits of e-education should be in place c) All schools should be connected and using ICT for teaching & learning d) Skilled and capable workforce to support inclusive growth via e-education should be recruited or trainede) Teachers need to be trained on usage of e-education resources f) Quality of content, localization of content for delivery e-education should be emphasized I believe the mechanism of e-education learning will be evolving over a period of time, until we see the benefits and real impact at grassroot level. 13 days ago Like

Follow Niranjan Niranjan Agarwal @Subrat Yes with e-education, any language can be made available for students learning in any syllabi. The State Board or central board could explore options of collaborating with some of the online language learning platforms such as (www.livemocha.com or something localized)- the charges or tariffs could vary based on school type and usage.

And about crowdsourcingI think it is really a good idea, not sure if it is already happening for content development in education but do know that it happening in IT development. 12 days ago Like

karthikeyan arumugathandavan .Provoking article on Education , Is K12 blended learning disruptive? ..An introduction of the theory of hybrids By Clayton M. Christensen, Michael B. Horn, and Heather Staker May 2013 "" EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Clayton Christensen Institute, formerly Innosight Institute, has published three papers describing the rise of K12 blended learningthat is, formal education programs that combine online learning and brick-and-mortar schools. This fourth paper is the first to analyze blended learning through the lens of disruptive innovation theory to help people anticipate and plan for the likely effects of blended learning on the classrooms of today and schools of tomorrow. The paper includes the following sections: Introduction to sustaining and disruptive innovation There are two basic types of innovationsustaining and disruptivethat follow different trajectories and lead to different results. Sustaining innovations help leading, or incumbent, organizations make better products or services that can often be sold for better profits to their best customers. They serve

existing customers according to the original definition of performance that is, according to the way the market has historically defined whats good. A common misreading of the theory of disruptive innovation is that disruptive innovations are good and sustaining innovations are bad. This is false. Sustaining innovations are vital to a healthy and robust sector, as organizations strive to make better products or deliver better services to their best customers. Disruptive innovations, in contrast, do not try to bring better products to existing customers in established markets. Instead, they offer a new definition of whats goodtypically they are simpler, more convenient, and less expensive products that appeal to new or less demanding customers. Over time, they improve enough to intersect with the needs of more demanding customers, thereby tranforming a sector. Examples in the paper from several industries demonstrate the classic patterns of both types of innovation. .......>>>........"" http://www.christenseninstitute.org/publications/hybrids/ .8 days ago 1
