CASES OF ASME BOILER AND PRESSURE VESSEL CODE

2192-6

Approval Date: January 29, 2009 Code Cases will remain available for use until annulled by the applicable Standards Committee.

Case 2192-6 Modied 9Cr-1Mo-V Cast Material Section I Inquiry: May modied 9Cr-1Mo-V castings with the chemical analysis shown in Table 1, the mechanical properties shown in Table 2, and otherwise conforming to applicable requirements in the following specications, be used for Section I construction? (a) Castings, SA-217 (b) Pipe, SA-426 Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that modied 9Cr-1Mo-V castings having the chemical requirements shown in Table 1 and room temperature mechanical property requirements shown in Table 2, may be used in Section I construction provided the following requirements are met: (a) The material shall meet the chemical analysis and minimum tensile requirements described in the Inquiry, and shall otherwise meet the requirements of SA-217 or SA-426 as applicable. (b) The material shall be austenitized within the temperature range of 1900F to 1975F (1040C to 1080C), followed by air or accelerated cooling, and tempered within the range of 1350F to 1470F (730C to 800C). (c) The maximum allowable stress values for the material shall be those given in Table 3. (d) Separate weld procedure qualications conducted in accordance with Section IX shall be required for this material. For the purposes of performance qualication and postweld heat treatment, the material shall be considered P-No. 15E, Group 1. (e) Except as provided in para. (f) if during the manufacturing any portion of the component is heated to a temperature greater than 1470F (800C), then the component must be reaustenitized and retempered in its entirety in accordance with (a) above, or that portion of the component heated above 1470F (800C), including the Heat-Affected Zone created by the local heating, must be replaced, or must be removed, reaustenitized, and retempered, and then replaced in the component.

(f) If the allowable stress values to be used are less than or equal to those provided in Table 1A of Section II, Part D for Grade 9 (SA-217 C12 or equivalent product specications) at the design temperature, then the requirements of para. (e) may be waived provided the portion of the component heated to a temperature greater than 1470F (800C) is reheat treated within the temperature range 1350F to 1425F (730C to 775C). (g) A manufacturers test report meeting certication requirements of SA-703 shall be provided. (h) This Case number shall be shown in the material certication and marking of the material. (i) This Case number shall be shown on the Manufacturers Data Report.

The Committees function is to establish rules of safety, relating only to pressure integrity, governing the construction of boilers, pressure vessels, transport tanks and nuclear components, and inservice inspection for pressure integrity of nuclear components and transport tanks, and to interpret these rules when questions arise regarding their intent. This Code does not address other safety issues relating to the construction of boilers, pressure vessels, transport tanks and nuclear components, and the inservice inspection of nuclear components and transport tanks. The user of the Code should refer to other pertinent codes, standards, laws, regulations or other relevant documents.
