What is Heavy Metal?

Just so we are clear before I go on! VIDEO

Heavy Metal Stereotypes: True or False

The thing I loved about heavy metal was that the people that listened to it were apart of something of a counter culture. At least for me it was a counter culture in the sense that me and all my friends chose not to conform to popular music at the time. This in itself is one of the first heavy metal stereotypes

Heavy Metal Success

Stereotypes

and

My Journey into Heavy Metal

I have been a metal fan for a very long time now My journey into heavy metal started out when I was in high school. At this time Gangster rap was still the big thing in the pop charts. Think Fifty Cent, Eminem, D12, G-Unit all of these guys were the cool thing! Around the time I was 14, I realized that I no longer wanted To conform to what the TV said was cool This is where I got into rock music which eventually got to hard rock until I officially made it into Heavy Metal. I remember hearing bands like Pantera for the first time and thinking that this is the coolest, heaviest stuff I had ever heard in my life! Some of my best friends at the time were very big into the death metal scene. I also got into bands like Children of Bodom, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary and Arch Enemy. At the same time I loved classic metal bands such as Black Sabbath (although I dont like calling them heavy metal)

Fans of heavy metal generally tend to ONLY like heavy metal. I too fell into this category I didnt even like people that werent into the same music as me! A little harsh but give me a break I was a teenager! I actually didnt like a guy because he thought Dio was a better front-man than Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath! That Heavy Metal stereotype in my opinion is the only real sure thing. Other heavy metal stereotypes are that these people are mean, terrible people that are angry and all worship the devil Come on, seriously?! I can tell you that a heavy metal gig is one of the best, safest places! If you are ever in a crowd and you fall down people will stop and help you up. Usually these scruffy looking people that wear black shirts all the time are genuinely nice, decent people.

What I wanted to talk about in particular is the heavy metal stereotype that you wouldnt usually associate any successful people to heavy metal.. I was talking to a guy named John Lavenia today and he is a very successful entrepreneur. John Lavenia works from home and is actually one of the founding members of the Extreme Team. This is the same team that I am apart of You see I blog fulltime from home and John Lavenia has been something of a mentor in business to me. I was really shocked when I heard him mention a number of times that he liked heavy metal. When I asked John what bands in particular and he said: Currently, I listen to a lot of bands like Nile, Cannibal Corpse, Vomitory, Lot of old school stuff too Sodom, Kreator, Testament I never thought that a six figure per month earner listens to some really heavy music like Nile and Cannibal corpse! Heavy Metal stereotypes are like any other stereotype. Yes, sometimes they are true but most of the time they are not. So dont be scared of heavy metal, you never know who listens to it! In this video here John Lavenia talks about some serious stuff on how he decided to get out of the stereotype of working a nine to five job and actually take his life and future into his own hands. He also talks about the stereotype of having an online business. As he put it:
