Appointment Procedures Description and Rationale

Please call or email to set up an appointment. This course will introduce students to a wide variety of reading material in an effort to expand their vocabularies and increase their familiarity with the conventions of written English. We will read with particular attention to grammar, sentence structure and rhetorical technique. This course aims to improve students speed and fluency in reading. None Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Read with increased speed and fluency Use contextual clues to help understand unfamiliar vocabulary Scan a passage for main ideas Comment articulately upon materials read Class attendance 10% Homework, classwork, presentations, tests 30% Mid-Term Exam 20% Final Exam 40% (Sealed marking the exam papers)

No classes Week 5 (Oct 8-12) Unit 2: exercise and its effects on the body, cause and effect IELTS Prep: Multiple Choice

Week 6 (Oct 15-19) Unit 3: different approaches to education and business in the East and West, using examples to support a general statement IELTS Prep: Practice Test I Week 7 (Oct 22-26) Unit 4: some typical stories from the USA about its history and its people, first things first narration principle IELTS Prep: Summary Week 8 (Oct 29- Nov. 2) Additional Readings provided by the teacher: reading skill paraphrasing is emphasized IELTS Prep: Sentence Completion Week 9 (Nov. 5-9) Additional Readings provided by the teacher Review for Mid-term Exam Week 10 (Nov. 12-16) Mid-term Exam Unit 5: Attitudes towards death; narration structure in chronological order; locating details in the text.
