Propylene Glycol Esters of Fatty Acids

Definition Description

Propylene Glycol Esters of Fatty Acids are esters of fatty acids and Propylene Glycol Esters of Fatty Acids occur as white to light

propylene glycol, or transesterified substances of fats and oils and propylene glycol. yellow-brown powders, flakes, granules, waxy lumps, or are white to light yellow-brown, viscous liquids. They are odorless or have a slight, characteristic odor. Identification (1) To 0.1 g of Propylene Glycol Esters of Fatty Acids, add 2 ml of ethanol, dissolve while warming, add 5 ml of diluted sulfuric acid (1 20), heat in a water bath for 30 minutes, and cool. Oil drops or white to yellow-white solids are formed. Separate the oil drops or solids, add 3 ml of ether, and shake. They dissolve. (2)

Test Solution To about 5 g of Propylene Glycol Esters of Fatty Acids, add 50

ml of ethanolic potassium hydroxide TS, heat with a reflux condenser in a water bath for 1 hour, and evaporate the ethanol to almost complete dryness. Add 50 ml of diluted hydrochloric acid (1 3), shake well, and separate the produced fatty acid by extracting three times with 40 ml of a petroleum ethermethyl ethyl ketone mixture (7 : 1) each time. Stir the water layer well, neutralize by adding dropwise sodium hydroxide solution (1 25), and concentrate in a water bath under reduced pressure. Add 20 ml of methanol at about 40, shake well, cool, filter, evaporate the methanol in the filtrate in a water bath to obtain a viscid substance. Use a solution of this viscid substance in methanol (1 9) as the test solution.

Procedure

Perform Thin-Layer Chromatography on 5 l of the test solution,

using a mixture of methanol and propylene glycol (9 : 1) and a mixture of methanol and glycerol (9 : 1) as the control solutions, and a mixture of n-butanol, methanol and chloroform (5 : 3 : 2) as the developing solvent. For the thin-layer plate, use silica gel for thin-layer chromatography, dried at 110 for 1 hour, as the support. Stop the development when the solvent front rises 15 cm above the original line, dry in air, and remove the solvent by heating at 110 for 10 minutes. After cooling, spray with thymolsulfuric acid TS and heat at 110 for 20 minutes to develop a color. A yellow spot is observed in the same position as that of propylene glycol for the control solution. Even if another spot is observed, it is a white spot in the same position as the glycerol of the control solution. Purity (2) (1) Acid value Not more than 8.0 (Fats and Related Substances Tests). Heavy metals Not more than 20 g/g as Pb (1.0 g, Method 2, Control

solution Lead Standard Solution 2.0 ml). (3) (4) Arsenic Not more than 4.0 g/g as As2O3 (0.50 g, Method 3, Apparatus B). Proceed as directed under Purity (4) for Sorbitan Esters of Not more than 1.5%. Polyoxyethylene

Fatty Acids. Residue on Ignition
