Sussex board updated on Park and Recreation Department changes

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The number of rentals in the village of Sussex park shelters and enclosed buildings increased in 2012 from the previous year, according to information in Park and Recreation Annual report that was presented to the Sussex Village Board June 24. According to the report, the total number of rentals increased to 282 in 2012 from 196 in 2011. The biggest increase came at the Youth Hall, which had three rentals in 2011 but 37 rentals in 2012. Also, rentals at the Community Center increased from 34 in 2011 to 87 in 2012. Last year saw the transition to a new Director of Reaction Services, as Sasha Snapp took over the position from Amy Flaherty. Recreation Program Coordinator Megan Sackett filled in as interim director while Jean Horner joined the department as a senior program coordinator. In her comments to the board, Snapp said she was very impressed that staff was able to "keep the ball rolling" during the transition. Snapp said that Horner "has added a tremendous amount to what the department is doing with a very limited amount of hours." Snapp said Horner works eight hours a week and has created a quarterly craft club, a monthly book club, and has increased sponsorship and partnership in seniorfocused organizations. She also said that Horner has been involved with the Senior Communications Committee

Heinz is a Border Collie mix - he came into the shelter as a stray. He is super friendly and eager to meet you! He knows commands like: sit, down, shake/paw and speak. He is good with other dogs and cats we would just ask that he go to a home with no infants. Heinz is a very energetic boy and will need a daily exercise plan!

Tip of the Week: When the temperature is very high, don't let your dog linger on hot asphalt. Being so close to the ground, your pooch's body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Keep walks during these times to a minimum. License Number #266935-DS

Anna Trebunskaya makes appearance at Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Falls

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The new Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Menomonee Falls had a very special

Dancing with a star

guest to teach a group dance lesson June 29. Anna Trebunskaya, one of the professional dancers on Dancing with the Stars, provided beginners level instruction in the cha cha. The evening marked the grand opening of the renovated studio at a new location in Menomonee Falls, N87 W17317 Main St. Tim Brooks, co-owner of the Menomonee Falls, explained that the evening included several fund raising opportunities for Childrens Hospital of Wisconsin. Attendees could have their photo taken with Trebunskaya, with the $10 fee being donated by Kens Digital Photography to Childrens Hospital of Wisconsin. There was also a silent raffle and auction. Brooks explained that he and his wife Kristin have a 15-year-old daughter and had to take their daughter to the hospital one time. They were just wonderful, they were

fantastic with her, Brooks said. Later, in introducing Trebunskaya, Brooks noted that she has been the International Grand Ball Latin champion, the Professional United States Rising Star Latin champion, a Blackpool Rising Star Latin finalist and the United States National Professional Latin finalist. Trebunskaya also has been a two-time runner up on Dancing with the Stars. In her opening remarks to the audience, Trebunskaya said she had been teaching at Fred Astaire Dance Studios in Wisconsin for approximately a week. Ive seen a lot a rain, Ive seen a lot of greenery, she said. She then answered the three questions she has been asked the most about Dancing with the Stars: Will she be on the next season of Dancing with the Stars? I dont know, Trebunskaya replied. How do you get paired up with the celebrities? I have no control of that, she said. She said the decision is made by the casting director and the executive producer. The celebrities are chosen first and then assigned a professional dancer based on

factors such as personality, height, and age. Trebunskaya noted that her celebrity partners have included ultimate fighter Chuck Liddell, Hall of Fame National Football League receiver Jerry Rice and onetime Queer Eye for the Straight Guy co-host Carson Kressley. Yeah, big difference between those three, she said. Who is her favorite celebrity partner? Carson Kressley yes, we bonded over fashion and shoes, Trebunskaya said. She then started teaching the cha cha.

Heat awareness for seniors

The Wisconsin Department 0of Health Services offers the following tips for seniors to stay safe in the summer heat. Tips to keep safe in hot weather: Do not sit in a parked car. Temperatures in a car can become life threatening within minutes. On an 80-degree day with sunshine, the temperature inside a car even with the windows cracked slightly can rise 20 to 30 degrees above the outside temperature in 10 to 20 minutes. There have been cases where the inside temperature rose 40 degrees. Keep your living space cool. If you have an air conditioner, use it. Cover windows to keep the sun from shining in. If you do not have an air conditioner you should consider going to a community cooling center. If you stay at home, open windows to let air circulate. At extreme high temperatures, a fan loses its ability to effectively reduce heat-related illness. When it's hotter than 95 degrees use fans to blow hot air out of the window rather than to blow hot air on your body. Slow down and limit physical activity. Plan outings or exertion for the early morning or after dark when temperatures are cooler. Drink plenty of water and eat lightly. Dont wait for thirst, but instead drink plenty of water throughout the day. Avoid alcohol or caffeine and stay away from hot, heavy meals. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, lightcolored clothing. Add a hat or umbrella to keep your head cooland dont forget sunscreen. Dont stop taking medication unless your doctor says you should. Take extra care to stay cool and ask your doctor or pharmacist for any special heat advice. Take a shower. Taking a cool shower or bath will cool you down. A shower or bath will actually work faster than an air conditioner. Applying cold wet rags to the neck, head and limbs also cools down the body quickly. Signs and symptoms of heat-related illness and what to do about them are as follows: Heat crampsCramps or muscle spasms in the abdomen, arms or legs. The solutions is to stop activity, cool down, and drink clear juice or sports drink. Heat exhaustionHeavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea and fainting. The solution is to cool down, seek medical attention. Heat strokeExtremely high body temperature, red, hot, dry skin, rapid pulse, throbbing headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, unconsciousness. The solution is to call 911 and cool the victim with shower or hose until help arrives. For more information, visit www.readywisconsin.wi.gov and click on Heat Awareness section.
