Dead to Sin; Alive in Christ

Romans Chapter 6

I. You are dead to sin, but alive in Christ! Rom 6:1 Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of His wonderful grace? Paul had taught grace so radically that people were beginning to wonder if he was teaching that it was ok just to live in sin. In the first 5 chapters of Romans, Paul explained very clearly that if you are in Christ, your sins wont ever disqualify you and your good works wont ever qualify you, you are qualified for all of Gods blessings because you have been made righteous in Christ Jesus. He taught that God is no longer holding your sins against you and has completely cleared your record forever. He explained how its not your obedience that made you righteous, but rather faith in Jesus obedience that made you righteous (forgiven and qualified) before the Father. Gods grace is greater than all your sins! So it was only natural for this question to arise in our minds: Well if all of that is true and Im not acceptable and approved before God because of my good works, then is it ok for me to live in sin so that God can show me more of His grace? Is it ok for me to live in jealousy, offence, unforgiveness, fear, disrespect, strife, anger, gossip, selfishness, or criticize and judge people, etc. Is it ok for people to live in greed, adultery, to steal, lie, etc. because God doesnt count their sins against them? Then Paul clearly answers this question in verse 2. Rom 6:2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it?
The Greek word translated "sin" here is "HAMARTIA," a noun describing the sin nature. The New International Version translation calls this the old self.

Paul was saying if you are no longer a sinner- your old sinful nature died with Jesus-then how can you continue to live in sin? Sinners sin, but youre not a sinner anymore! Youve been made righteous as a gift of Grace. You have a new righteous nature. Righteous people live righteous lives! Sin is no longer a part of our nature-it is foreign to us. We have a new DNA-LOVE. We are made in the very image of our Father and He is LOVE! I Corinthians 13:4-8. We love because it is who we are in Jesus! We have a new motivation for not living in sin. Its no longer because we fear punishment from God or we are trying to earn His approval. Its because its just not who we are anymore! We realize the devastating power sin can have in our lives and we no longer want to be controlled by it. Jesus set us free from sins dominion so we could enjoy our lives and have life in abundance! We have been set free from sins power and we now have the power to live righteous, blessed lives through Jesus! We can now experience the glorious life we have always wanted to live! 25

Rom 6:3 Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined Him in His death? Rom 6:4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives. Rom 6:5 Since we have been united with Him in His death, we will also be raised to life as He was.
The mistake of always associating the word "baptism" with water baptism has led many people to incorrectly interpret Ro 6:3-4 as speaking of water baptism. Some have even attempted to use these verses to prove that water baptism is the act that causes salvation. However, that is not what Paul was saying and, in fact, is the exact opposite of every point that he had made in the book of Romans for salvation by grace through faith. This is not speaking of the sign of water baptism. Paul was speaking of the act where all of us who put saving faith in Jesus as our Lord are automatically and instantaneously baptized into Jesus and all that He purchased for us (1Co 12:13 and Col 2:12). He was simply stating that as believers, we have become dead to sin (Ro 6:6) through the death of Jesus. Jesus didn't die for His sins; He had none. He died for our sins (1Pe 2:24). Therefore, His death was for us, and all the benefits to be obtained through His death and resurrection are our benefits. Andrew Wommack Paul said have you forgotten what happened to you? Your old sinful self died, and a brand new you was resurrected in Christ. The reason believers live in sin is because they have forgotten or never understood who they truly are in Christ (James 1:21-25). You are no longer a sinner, but alive in Christ. Jesus is now living His righteous life through us because we are one spirit with Him.

II. Jesus died to break the power of sin over our lives Rom 6:6 We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. Rom 6:7 For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. Rom 6:8 And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with Him. Rom 6:9 We are sure of this because Christ was raised from the dead, and He will never die again. Death no longer has any power over Him. Rom 6:10 When He died, He died once to break the power of sin. But now that He lives, He lives for the glory of God. We learned previously that the power that sin had over us was condemnation, guilt, and shame. By identifying ourselves as a sinner we constantly lived with a sense of not being good enoughLacking in some way-and finding fault with ourselves and others- we were trapped in the vicious cycle of sin and condemnation just like the rest of the world (Romans 5:12). But when Jesus died, our old sinful self died with Him. And He set us free from the power of sin (condemnation, guilt, and shame). He died to break the power that sin had over our lives. Sin no longer reigns in our lives through condemnation. Sins power has been broken off of us because we are no longer sinners, we have been given a brand new nature We are righteous men and women because of Jesus! How do I live in the reality that sin has no more power in my life? How can I practically experience this truth in my life? Rom 6:11 Even so consider yourselves also dead to sin and your relation to it broken, but alive to God [living in unbroken fellowship with Him] in Christ Jesus. 26

Rom 6:12 Let not sin therefore rule as king in your mortal (short-lived, perishable) bodies, to make you yield to its cravings and be subject to its lusts and evil passions. Rom 6:13 Do not continue offering or yielding your bodily members to sin as instruments of wickedness. But offer and yield yourselves to God as though you have been raised from the dead to [perpetual] life, and your bodily members to God, presenting them as implements of righteousness. Rom 6:14 For sin shall not [any longer] exert dominion over you, since now you are not under Law [as slaves], but under grace [as subjects of God's favor and mercy]. AMP The answer to our question above is found in verse 11. Consider it to be so or acknowledge that you are dead to sin, and alive in Christ-living in unbroken fellowship with your Heavenly Father! The reason many Christian still struggle with sin is because they have not considered themselves dead to sin, and alive in Christ! They still think sin has control of their lives and they cant break free from its power. And as long as we believe we are still sinners (not good enough), sin will continue to be the fruit of our lives. But the moment we decide, I am dead to sin (I am not a sinner anymore); I am alive in Christ (I have a new righteous nature in Jesus)- and continue to renew our minds to this truth- we will experience the glorious life- free from sin and its affects on us- that Jesus came to give us all! You are free from sin because you are no longer under the law, but under grace The law only showed you how sinful you were and how youd never measure up-filling your heart with condemnation, guilt and shame (Romans 5:20) Grace gave you the gift of Righteousness and empowers you to live a righteous life! (Romans 5:21)
Titus 2:11-12

For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say No to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, NIV Gal 2:19 What actually took place is this: I tried keeping rules and working my head off to please God, and it didn't work. So I quit being a "law man" so that I could be God's man. Gal 2:20 Christ's life showed me how, and enabled me to do it. I identified myself completely with him. Indeed, I have been crucified with Christ. My ego is no longer central. It is no longer important that I appear righteous before you or have your good opinion, and I am no longer driven to impress God. Christ lives in me. The life you see me living is not "mine," but it is lived by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. III. Whomever you yield yourself to (say yes to) controls your life Choose to say Yes to Jesus- identify yourself completely with Him! Rom 6:15 What then [are we to conclude]? Shall we sin because we live not under Law but under God's favor and mercy? Certainly not! Rom 6:16 Do you not know that if you continually surrender yourselves to anyone to do his will, you are the slaves of him whom you obey, whether that be to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience which leads to righteousness? Rom 6:17 But thank God, though you were once slaves of sin, you have become obedient with all your heart to the standard of teaching in which you were instructed and to which you were committed. Rom 6:18 And having been set free from sin, you have become the servants of righteousness 27

Rom 6:19 I am speaking in familiar human terms because of your natural limitations. For as you yielded your bodily members as servants to impurity and ever increasing lawlessness, so now yield your bodily members once for all as servants to righteousness [which leads] to sanctification. Rom 6:20 For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. Rom 6:21 But then what benefit (return) did you get from the things of which you are now ashamed? [None] for the end of those things is death. Rom 6:22 But now since you have been set free from sin and have become the slaves of God, you have your present reward in holiness and its end is eternal life. Rom 6:23 For the wages which sin pays is death, but the [bountiful] free gift of God is eternal life through (in union with) Jesus Christ our Lord. AMP In Verse 16, obey means G5219: obey hupakouo From G5259 and G191; to hear under (as a subordinate), that is, to listen attentively; You become a slave of whomever you choose to listen to. Whomever you listen attentively to is who controls your life Listen attentively to sin (the devil) =Condemnation and death Listen attentively to righteousness (Jesus) = Freedom Verse 19: Whoever you yield to (say yes to) controls your life. You once said yes to sin, but now you say yes to Righteousness. You once let sin control your life. Now you let Righteousness control your life! You reign in life by saying Yes to the King of kings- I have a new nature of love! I am righteous in Jesus! Rom 6:15 So, since we're out from under the old tyranny, does that mean we can live any old way we want? Since we're free in the freedom of God, can we do anything that comes to mind? 16 Hardly. You know well enough from your own experience that there are some acts of socalled freedom that destroy freedom. Offer yourselves to sin, for instance, and it's your last free act. But offer yourselves to the ways of God and the freedom never quits. All your lives you've let sin tell you what to do. 17 But thank God you've started listening to a new master, 18 one whose commands set you free to live openly in his freedom! 19 I'm using this freedom language because it's easy to picture. You can readily recall, can't you, how at one time the more you did just what you felt like doing--not caring about others, not caring about God--the worse your life became and the less freedom you had? And how much different is it now as you live in God's freedom, your lives healed and expansive in holiness? 20 As long as you did what you felt like doing, ignoring God, you didn't have to bother with right thinking or right living, or right anything for that matter. 21 But do you call that a free life? What did you get out of it? Nothing you're proud of now. Where did it get you? A dead end. 22 But now that you've found you don't have to listen to sin tell you what to do, and have discovered the delight of listening to God telling you, what a surprise! A whole, healed, put-together life right now, with more and more of life on the way! 23 Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death. But God's gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master. The Message Awake to Righteousness: I am dead to sin and alive in Christ! I am no longer a sinner (failure); I am righteous in Jesus! I say no to sin, and I say yes to Jesus- I identify completely with who I am in Christ- approved, accepted, forgiven, blessed, loving, kind, forgiving, peaceful, and very, very good because of Jesus! Because of Jesus, sin has lost its power in my life! I am free to let Jesus live His life through me!
