Speed of Sound
Name: _________________________Date: ___________
Create a table below to record your results from the experiment.

To calculate the velocity of sound in air using the standard temperature dependent sound-air velocity formula: Note: 331 m/s is at 0 degrees Celsius. V = 331 m/s + 0.6 (Temp.C) m/s Create a table below to show the calculated velocity and actual velocity.

Speed of Sound
Sound is a vibration that travels through an elastic medium as a wave. The speed of sound describes how far this wave travels in a given amount of time. In a longitudinal wave the particle displacement is parallel to the direction of wave propagation. The particles do not move down the tube with the wave; they simply oscillate back and forth about their individual equilibrium positions. Pick a single particle and watch its motion. In a transverse wave the particle displacement is perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. The particles do not move along with the wave; they simply oscillate up and down about their individual equilibrium positions as the wave passes by. Pick a single particle and watch its motion. Todays activity will focus on the speed of sound. We will setup a hand held radio and air horn on one end and a hand held radio with stopwatches on the other end. There should be a delay from the time the air horn is heard in the radio till the time the air horn is heard in the air. 1 group of students, all students in need a stopwatch.

This will be modified with exact location details. Directions for activity: 1. Brainstorm within your group what you think will be the appropriate distance, in meters to complete the activity. Record this number here: ____________________ 4. Measure the distance, go to the south across the quad, and test your theory. Start the stopwatch when you hear the sound in the radio and stop the stopwatch when you hear the sound in the air. 5. Repeat experiment until you can no longer move to the south. 6. Every student must record their own number for each experiment. 7. Return to the classroom, average your groups number, calculate the velocity of sound.
