Example 1 Given f ( x ) = x 3 1 and g ( x ) = 3 x + 1 . Determine whether f ( x ) = g 1 ( x )

Solution Let g 1 ( x ) = y Using the definition of inverse g g 1 ( x ) = x

g( y) = 3 y + 1 = x
y + 1 = x3
Therefore,

y = x3 1

g 1 ( x ) = x 3 1 = f ( x )
