"The simplest meaning of a disciple is a 'learner' or 'follower'. Socrates had disciples and Winston Churchill had disciples. But is this all Jesus meant when He used the work, 'disciple'? No! jesus Christ desires to develop disciples throughout the world who are committed to being more than just
followers."
Navigators Book 6
Yes this is the desire of Jesus and it should a!so be our desire. We should
pray that God will indicate to us others which we will be able to disciple and
equip to carry the Good News to others. God has indicated two men for me to work with as disciples, Ita and Jose'. Both are recent converts but are
anxious to learn more about Christ and share the Gospel with others. I plan to have Bible studies with them and also take them with me calling. The wife of each one of these men are also Christian. Pray that I will be able to
help them learn to be better disciples. "A man may be consecrated, dedicated and devoted but of little value if undisciplined." Hudson Taylor I am also praising the Lord
for the chance to have a Bible
and so 1 set up a study with him. We are using a course called "Dynamic Christianity". It is a bery good course for those beginning to learn about the Bible. During our second class, Eduardo invited Euripedes to study with us. Both of them have a great desire to learn more about Jesus. From left to right: Euripedes,

"He told His disciples, 7 have been given all authority in heaven and earth. Therefore go and make disciples in all the nations baptizing them into the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and then teach these new disciples to obey ail the commands / have given you; and be sure of this that / am with you always even to the end of the world. WITH
CAROL
Here's a great recipe my mom gave me. It's great with rice. When we have Brazilian friends over I usually fix this. Try it! They like it
and so do we.
Roll chicken in salt, pepper, paprika, and flour, brown in fat. Put chicken in casserole. Cook onion, green pepper, and garlic in hot fat about 5 minutes. Add curry powder, thyme, tomatoes, salt and pep per to taste. Add sugar. Pour sauce over chicken, sprinkle with
Some children say "y^s", And some say "oui". Some say "ja", And some say "si". Some children say "peep", And some say "booh." Their words may be different, But they are like you. Some children eat porridge, And some eat figs. Some children like ice cream, And some roasted pigs!
(Their eyes may be blue. Their colors are different, But they are like you!

On April the 17th during a one day spiritual retreat I had the priveledge to baptize three people in the same family. Revelino the father, Anna the mother, and their son, Abajio. Jose helped me in baptizing them. We have been doing baptisms with the help of one of our church leaders to train them how to baptize. Revelino, Anna and Abajio are all growing spiritually. Revelino works at a slaughter plant called Caipo here in Uberlandia. Please pray for these new converts. "We do not stand in the world bearing witness to Christ, but stand in Christ and
bear witness to the world."

On May the 29th Carlos and llda, a young couple that live in the small house that we own here in Uberlandia, were baptized. They just got married in February and we are praising the Lord for their decision to serve Christ, llda is the daught er of Jose and Anna. Ita and Thereza who are also relatives and Jose and Anna have all been witnessing to them and we are looking forward to great things hap
pening through this family. Pray that all of these families who live in Santa Mon ica will be a great witness to relatives and friends.
"Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the oid things passed away; behold, new things have come. Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ, and gave us the ministry of reconcilia tion, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not count
ing their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of
reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were entreating through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the
Corinthians S: 17-21
Thank you God and thank you our friends who support us, you who sacrificial[y give so people can know jesus and the abundant and eternal life He gives. For
these things I am so thankful:
MY FAMILY My Christian husband and two boys. We try to live by, "Where
each lives for the other and all live for God."
OUR GOOD HEALTH So many here are physically sick because of poverty
(lack of food and lack of medical care). Many do not have teeth or have huge
black cavities resulting in terrible toothaches. God has richly protected and blessed us with amazingly good health ever since we've been in Brazil.
HOUSE Our first two years in Brazil we lived in a small simple house (3 rooms plus bathroom). Now God has provided a 3 bedroom home so we have more room for visitors. We rent this home (kind of a quadruplex) for about $160 a month. We have many neighbors to whom we are witnessing. With this colder weather we appreciate even more our home when so many have drafty homes, even shacks letting rain and wind in. Glad too we have warm clothes. Temperature here never gets much below 40 degrees F. but there are no heaters or furnaces and dampness
makes it seem colder.
CAR We did not plan to buy a car but decided we could use it for God's glory. Now we can make two or three visits in the time it would take us to walk
there or ride a bus (we often still walk and ride the bus with gasoline at $1.80 a gallon). Bicycles, horse carts, buses, and motor scooters are used (even in the rain we see men riding bicycles holding an umbrella).
OUR FRIENDS So we are not so lonesome and homesick for you whom we love so much God has given us friends here and especially our family in Christ. Here you never know when you'll have visitors. Last Saturday night two families
too wonderful for words." (II Corinthians 9:15) Many religions here (as spiritual
ism) harm people and do not give them eternal life, love, and hope like Jesus as our
personal Lord and Saviour and He gives us an abundant life. The Christians here have been transformed from their old lives to the Way, Truth, and Life in Jesus.
Living in another country we have seen just how "rich" we are rich in bles
sings and have learned to be more thankful seeing people with so little.
We can't goswimminganymore because it's getting colder. Now we have to wear a shirt, socks and sometimes even a sweater. Two nights we both got so cold we went in to sleep with Mom and Dad. iVIom + Dad + Timothy + Mark = 4, so there wasn't much room in the bed. We're g!ad it's getting colder though because now there's more wind to fly our kites (papagaios) and we can eat tangerines (tangerinas). There are big and little tangerines.
Cows here have a hump on their neck and horses are on the streets with the cars. Our milkman comes everyday. He doesn't have a milk truck but has a horse
which pulls a cart with the milk in it.
Sundays we have Sunday School in our home. Mom teaches us and the others
about Jesus. My friends go home and tell their Moms and Dads about Jesus and our stories from the Bible. Everyday we ask if today is Sunday so we can have Sunday School. We like Mom and Dad to read us Bible stories everyday. It's
fun to sing songs about Jesus and to use our hands and feet to show we love Jesus. Jesus me ama - Jesus loves me! I've got to go play ball (soccer) now with my
friend Fernando. Bye! I (Tchau)

A true missionary is God's man in God'splace, doing God's work in God's way for
God's glory.
"Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned, as it were, with salt, so that you may know how you should respond to each person."
Colossians 4:5-6
The young couple whose picture is on the front of the newsletter are really happy. They have many reasonsfor being happyPraise the Lord. On May 29th Carlos and llda, a young couple that live in the small house that we own here in Uberlandia, were baptized. They were baptized by Jose, llda's father and Ita, llda's uncle. They just got married in February and we are praising the Lord for their decision to serve Christ, llda is the daughter of Jose and Anna. Ita and Thereza.who are also relatives, and Jose and Anna have all been witnessing to them and we are looking forward to great things happening through this family. Pray that all of these families who live in
Santa Monica will be a great witness to relatives and friends.
On September 7th we are going to have an all day retreat with about 40 people who come to our church meeting. Weare looking forward to being together and studying the Word of God for a day. Fellowship is one of the most important parts of the
Christian life. We expect that we might be able to baptize some people at (Rio Claro)
Clear River.
1am about to finish up the five month Bible study called Dynamic Christianity with Eduardo, Euripedes, and Ricardo. They are high school students and are grad uating this year. They are studying to take the college entrance exam called vestibular . It is a very difficult exam to eliminate students because there are a lot less openings in the colleges and universities than students wanting to get in. I hope that they all pass and are able to go to college. They are hard working young men. I hope that they will become Christianssoon. I am hoping to start many other Bible studies.
There can be no mistake so bad... as the greatest mistake of saying nothing for
Christ.
Nursing is putting your hand on the pulse beat of man and feeling dose to God.
I remember these words as I studied nursing and am thankful that God helped me to become a nurse. God knew before we did that we were coming to Brazil. Although
I do not work in a hospital here, I have been able to use my nursing knowledge.
I would like to share with you some of our experiences we have had here where cus toms and nursing care are different. One of my middle-aged friends tried to commit suicide and then four days later suffered a severe stroke. Because Aparecida is still in critical condition, she is in the hospital, but many people are cared for by their fami lies in their homes. Almost always a family member, or friend, stays with the patient day and night. I have stayed with various people and Jim stayed with me when Mark was born. The person stays with the patient since there is less help here than in the
United States.
Trained nurses (with degrees) are few but this seems to be changing. The nurses and
nurses' aides work in twelve hour shifts and
may have only one day off every twelve days. The aides are not paid very well. In the major cities of Brazil the hospitals and nursing care are more like those in the U.S.
When a person dies here, the body must be buried within twenty-four hours since embalming is not practiced. One time Jim
helped dress his dead friend (the man died one hour before he was to be baptized).
The body stays in the home and the family, relatives, and close friends stay up all night to keep "watch". Many times Harrry and Elaine Scales and ourselves have had oppor tunities to read scripture, pray and comfort the people. We have noticed several fami lies are more open to the Gospel after a
death.
We praise God for His good care of us even though we are living where many things
'
are different, jesus is the Great Doctor here in Brazil as He is there in the U.S. He canie to call the sick sinners to repentance and to give an abundant and eter
nal life.
Every Sunday from ten to eleven o'clock we have Bible School right here in our home. I like to invite my friends who live by me.
Some are little like Mark and then there are
some boys and girls like me and some who are 14 years old. The little ones ask Mom and I almost every day if we are going to have Bible School today. They would like it every day. Mark and I can have Bible stories every day but some of my friends can not, so they can hardly wait until Sunday. My friends like to learn about Jesus because some of them do not know very much about Him. Sometimes they even bring their moms to
see what we do.
/S
We have Bible stories and pray and sing about Jesus. We sing some of the same songs that you do, but they have different words so that my friends can understand them, Sometrmes Mark and 1 sing loud. We sure love Jesus a lot and want our
friends to love Him too.
Although we miss McDonald's Hamburgers and shakes, Apple pie and hot dogs, And great big juicy steaks
Though our money's funny And we're wearing out our shoes!
