DL251 OFEFATOFS' MANUAL 2
INTRODUCTION
Desighed to meet the heeds of professiohal studio ahd live souhd applicatiohs, the
DFAWMEF DL251 dual chahhel compressor/limiter has mahy advahced features
ihcludihg the choice of hard-khee or soft-khee characteristics, ah automatic attack
ahd release mode, ahd Dyhamic Spectral Ehhahcemeht to maihtaih trahsieht detail
durihg compressioh cohditiohs.
The DL251 may be used ih either balahced or uhbalahced systems ahd each chahhel
is ihdepehdehtly switchable betweeh +4dBu ahd -10dBV operatihg levels. lh additioh
to the compressor/limiter, each chahhel also cohtaihs ah ihdepehdeht, full-wave peak
limiter.
Because the compressor sectioh offers a choice of traditiohal hard-khee, ratio style
compressioh or soft-khee compressioh, it is equally adept at creative work ahd
uhobtrusive level cohtrol. The cohtrol lay-out follows that of a ratio style uhit, but
wheh the soft-khee characteristic is switched ih, the trahsitioh from uhity gaih to gaih
reductioh at the selected ratio is progressive ahd occurs over a homihal 10dB ihput
level rahge.
Soft-khee compressors are ofteh choseh ih applicatiohs that call for ihcohspicuous
level cohtrol whereas ratio type compressors are geherally cohsidered more
successful ih creative applicatiohs or where large amouhts of gaih reductioh are
required. By offerihg both alterhatives, the DL251 is capable of outstahdihg results
ih a very wide rahge of studio ahd live souhd situatiohs.
A feature of the DL251 is a highly effective peak limiter which allows the user to set
ah absolute output level that cah hever be exceeded. This facility is extremely
valuable both ih live souhd applicatiohs, for driver protectioh, ahd ih digital recordihg
where ah absolute maximum recordihg level exists. Furthermore, wheh the uhit is
deliberately driveh ihto limitihg, it cah be used creatively to produce level 'pumpihg'
effects.
The DL251 also ihcludes the hewly developed Dyhamic Spectral Ehhahcemeht
system which is desighed to compehsate for the loss of trahsieht detail that tehds to
occur durihg periods of heavy compressioh. This system is dyhamically related to the
degree of gaih reductioh takihg place which meahs that processihg is applied ohly
wheh heeded, ahd the degree of ehhahcemeht is set usihg just a sihgle rotary
cohtrol.
DL251 OFEFATOFS' MANUAL 3
INSTALLATION
The DL251 is desighed for stahdard 19" rack mouhtihg ahd occupies 1U of rack space.
Avoid mouhtihg the uhit directly above power amplifiers or power supplies that
radiate sighificaht amouhts of heat ahd always cohhect the maihs earth to the uhit.
Fibre or plastic washers may be used to preveht the froht pahel becomihg marked by
the mouhtihg bolts.
AUDIO CONNECTIONS
INPUTS and OUTPUTS: Both the ihput ahd output XLFs may be used either balahced
or uhbalahced, the wirihg cohvehtioh beihg: pih 1 Grouhd, pih 2 Hot ahd pih 3 Cold.
The rear pahel push buttohs should be released (out) for +4dBu operatioh or
depressed (ih) for -10dBV operatioh ih order to optimise the ihterhal gaih structure
of the uhit. For use with uhbalahced systems, the Cold pih (3) must be grouhded at
both ihput ahd output XLFs.
lf earth loop hum problems are ehcouhtered, doh't discohhect the maihs earth but
ihstead, try discohhectihg the sighal screeh oh the cables cohhectihg the DL251 to
the patchbay. lf such measures are hecessary, balahced operatioh is recommehded.
S/C INSERT: The side-chaih ihsert poiht is cohfigured as a stereo jack socket wired
tip returh, rihg sehd. This poiht is uhbalahced ahd would hormally be cohhected to
a hormalised or semi-hormalised pair of patchbay cohtacts.
PEAK / AVERAGE LINKING: A rear pahel switch gives a choice of two lihkihg
characteristics which ohly apply wheh the uhit is switched for stereo lihked
operatioh: Peak or Average. lh Peak mode, the gaih cohtrol of both chahhels is
derived from the peak level of whichever chahhel is currehtly loudest, while ih
Average mode, the cohtrol sighal is derived from the average of the two chahhel
levels. Most users have a preferehce for ohe or other mode of operatioh so ohce this
switch is set, it is uhlikely to be chahged agaih.
DL251 OFEFATOFS' MANUAL 4
POWER CONNECTION
The uhit will have beeh supplied with a power cable suitable for domestic power
outlets ih your couhtry. For your owh safety it is importaht that you use this cable.
The uhit should always be cohhected to the maihs supply earth usihg this cable.
lf for some reasoh the uhit is to be used at a maihs ihput operatihg voltage which is
differeht to that as supplied, the followihg procedure must be carried out. {see
/o//ow/n d/a|aml
1: Discohhect the uhit from the maihs.
2: Usihg a humber 1 size pozidrive screwdriver, remove the two
self-tappihg screws holdihg the voltage selectioh switch cover plate oh
the rear pahel.
3: Femove the cover plate ahd slide the switch fully to its opposite ehd.
4: Fotate the cover plate ohe half turh, (180) ahd refit the two screws.
5: Feplace with a correctly rated fuse for the selected operatioh voltage.
6: Fe-cohhect to maihs power source.
DL251 OFEFATOFS' MANUAL 5
CONTROL DESCRIPTION
Both chahhels of the DL251 are idehtical ahd may be used completely ihdepehdehtly
or lihked for stereo operatioh. lh the lihked mode, ohly the left hahd chahhel cohtrols
are fuhctiohal ahd serve as master cohtrols while both the compressor/limiters, ahd
the peak limiters of the two chahhels track together.
COMFFESSOF
ThreshoId: Determihes the ihput level above which gaih reductioh will be
applied ahd may be set ih the rahge -40 to +20dB. lh the 'Soft'
mode, the ohset of compressioh is progressive over a homihal
rahge of 10dB, while ih 'Hard' mode, gaih reductioh is applied as
sooh as the threshold is reached.
Hard/Soft-Knee: This switches betweeh cohvehtiohal ratio ahd soft-khee
characteristics. A red status LED ihdicates hard-khee operatioh
with a yellow LED ihdicatihg soft-khee operatioh.
Ratio: Sets the compressioh ratio ih the rahge 1:1 to ihfihity:1 allowihg
the possibility of true hard limitihg as well as compressioh. lh
soft-khee mode, the ratio ihcreases progressively arouhd the
threshold poiht to a maximum of the value set by the Fatio
cohtrol.
Gain Reduction: A hihe segmeht LED bargraph meter cohtihuously mohitors the
gaih reductioh applied by the compressor/limiter over the rahge
0 to 30dB.
Attack: Sets the rate at which the compressor will respohd to ihput
sighals that exceed the threshold level. This may be set ih the
rahge 0.5mS to 100mS.
ReIease: Sets the rate at which the system gaih returhs to hormal after the
ihput sighal level has falleh below the threshold. Adjustmeht
rahges from 50mS to 5 Sec.
Auto: Wheh selected, Auto disables the Attack ahd Felease cohtrols
ahd cohtihually optimises the attack ahd release times to suit the
dyhamics of the material beihg processed. lh geheral, this
settihg will produce the least obtrusive level cohtrol oh sighals
with widely varyihg dyhamics such as complete mixes.
S/C Listen: This facility allows the user to listeh to the side-chaih sighal. This
DL251 OFEFATOFS' MANUAL 6
is useful if ah exterhal processor, such as ah equaliser, has beeh
cohhected via the rear pahel ihsert socket. Wheh this switch is
active, the post -ihsert S/C sighal is routed directly to the output
of the DL251.
Gain: The output level may be attehuated or amplified by up to 20dB
to compehsate for level chahges caused by compressioh ahd
limitihg. This cohtrol comes before the Feak limiter detector ahd
will, as a cohsequehce, ihfluehce the limiter actioh.
Bypass: The DL251 features a 'hard bypass' which directly lihks the ihput
sockets to the outputs wheh Bypass is active. The adjaceht red
LED ihdicates the Bypass status.
Output Meter: A 10-segmeht LED bargraph level meter mohitors the level of the
output sighal over the rahge -20dB to +15dB with referehce to
the selected (-10dBV or +4dBu) operatihg level.

ENHANCEMENT
Enhance: Sighals exceedihg the compressioh threshold are dyhamically
ehhahced to preveht trahsieht detail beihg compromised wheh
powerful, low frequehcy souhds occurrihg at the same time
cause the compressor to apply gaih reductioh. A typical example
is a hi-hat souhd occurrihg at the same time as a bass drum beat;
as the compressor pulls dowh the gaih ih respohse to the bass
drum level, the hi-hat will be reduced ih level by a correspohdihg
amouht. A switch marked 'Oh' with a yellow status LED switches
the Ehhahce system ih ahd out of circuit for A/B checkihg.
The DL251 cohtaihs advahced circuitry which dyhamically
cohtrols the phase ahd spectral cohteht of the programme
material to lift trahsieht detail durihg times wheh compressioh
is applied, ahd the degree of processihg is related to the amouht
of gaih reductioh takihg place. The greeh LED above the Ehhahce
cohtrol shows the degree of ehhahcemeht takihg place, ahd
turhihg the cohtrol clockwise will ihcrease the amouht of
processed sighal added to the programme material. With the
ehhahce cohtrol rotated fully clockwise ahd dyhamic programme
material the greeh LED will apparentIy be illumihated cohstahtly,
but this is hot the case, dyhamic ehhahcemeht will still be
occurrihg, ohly the peaks are how so close together that the
humah eye cahhot detect the frequehcy.
The Ehhahce cohtrol comes before the Feak Limiter ih the sighal
side chaih, therefore more Ehhahce cah cause more Limitihg.
DL251 OFEFATOFS' MANUAL 7
FEAK LlMlTEF
LeveI: This cohtrol sets ah absolute limit that the output sighal may hot
exceed. This limiter is very fast actihg ehablihg it to cohtrol ahy
peaks without audible distortioh. lf the output sighal is so high
as to cause the limiter to operate for more thah 20mS, the
system gaih is automatically reduced to brihg the sighal back
withih rahge. The system gaih is theh returhed to hormal over a
period of approximately ohe secohd. The compressor Gaih
cohtrol should be used to ehsure that the peak limiter operates
ohly occasiohally if the limiter is to be used purely for peak
protectioh. Alterhatively, it may be deliberately driveh ihto
limitihg to produce creative effects.
STEFEO
Stereo Link: This switch cohfigures the chahhels for processihg stereo
programme material where the left hahd chahhel's cohtrols act
as master for both audio chahhels. Lihkihg applies to all switch
ahd khob fuhctiohs without exceptioh ihcludihg Bypass ahd S/C
Listeh. Ohly the output level meters remaih ihdepehdeht.
The same degree of gaih reductioh is applied to both audio
chahhels to preveht image shiftihg which would otherwise occur
whehever the left ahd right sighal dyhamics varied from each
other by ahy sighificaht degree. lf the rear pahel Lihk buttoh is
set to Feak, theh the gaih reductioh is cohtrolled by the peak
level of whichever chahhel is loudest at ahy time. lh the Average
positioh, the compressor always works from ah average of the
two chahhel sighals regardless of their relative levels.
The operatioh of the Stereo Lihk with the rear pahel detectioh
switch set to Feak will be most uhpredictable wheh ohe chahhel
is operatihg at +4dB ahd the other at -10dB. The sighal oh the
chahhel set to -10dB will most likely cohtrol the stereo side chaih
all of the time.
DL251 OFEFATOFS' MANUAL 8
SIDE CHAIN INSERT
The stereo " jack socket offers the optioh to ihsert other exterhal sighal processihg
ihto the cohtrol side chaih. The jack socket is cohfigured as the Fihg cohtact beihg
sighal sehd ahd the Tip cohtact beihg sighal returh. The sighal at the jack socket is
at -6dB (ref +4dB). This level remaihs cohstaht irrespective of the operatihg level set
by the rear pahel switch.
The most commoh use of this cohhectioh is to patch ih some equalisatioh for
'frequehcy sehsitive' compressioh, hormally called de-essihg. The stahdard method
is to ihsert some boost of the obtrusive frequehcies so the compressor side chaih
'sees' more of these frequehcies ahd applies more compressioh thah would be
hormally applied. The use of this facility and extehsive ehhahcemeht could be
couhter productive, so some moderatioh is advised.
lf the side chaih jack socket is permahehtly wired ihto a patch bay, it
must be cohhected to a fully hormalised pair of sockets. Ahy poor wire
termihatiohs or jack socket closihg cohtacts ih the side chaih jack
wirihg will certaihly cause some distortioh, ahd may totally preveht
compressioh from happehihg.
DL251 OFEFATOFS' MANUAL 9
OPERATION
The uhit should be cohhected ih-lihe with the sighal to be processed via suitable
ihsert poihts. Ehsure that the ihsert sehd ahd returh level oh your cohsole matches
the operatihg level set up usihg the push-buttohs oh the rear pahel of the DL251. lf
hot, select the appropriate operatihg level oh the DL251.
For moho use, each chahhel may be cohsidered as beihg completely ihdepehdeht
ahd set up accordihgly. For use with stereo sighals such as complete mixes or
submixes, the uhit should be switched to Stereo Lihk mode ahd all settihg up dohe
usihg the left hahd chahhel's cohtrols. The choice of Feak or Average lihkihg is dowh
to user preferehce ahd must be selected via the rear-pahel switch.
lhitial settihg up is best accomplished with the peak limiter threshold set to
maximum. This allows the compressor/limiter to be set up ih isolatioh. Very
geherally, the 'hard' ratio settihg provides the most positive meahs of cohtrollihg gaih
ahd is ihvariably the preferred choice if the compressor is to be used creatively.
Examples ihclude the treatmeht of ihdividual drum or guitar souhds, or for makihg
rock vocals 'souhd' compressed.
The 'Soft' settihg, oh the other hahd, is ofteh most effective ih cohtrollihg the
dyhamics of a complex sighal where uhobtrusive cohtrol is required. Typical
applicatiohs ihclude complete mixes or submixes, vocals where a hatural souhd is
to be maihtaihed, ahd ihstrumehts that heed to retaih their origihal character.
The ratio settihg depehds oh how firmly the sighal dyhamics heed cohtrollihg; as a
rule, higher ratios provide a higher degree of cohtrol but also tehd to be more audible
ih operatioh wheh high levels of gaih reductioh are required, especially wheh the
'Hard' settihg is selected. The ihtegral soft-khee feature of the DL251 rehders these
effects far less prohouhced, but this factor should still be takeh ihto cohsideratioh
wheh settihg up. lh geheral, wheh 'Soft' is selected, a higher compressioh ratio may
be used without compromisihg the souhd quality.
lf the Attack ahd Felease cohtrols are switched to Auto, settihg up is simply a matter
of adjustihg the Threshold cohtrol uhtil the desired amouht of gaih reductioh occurs.
This is judged partly by ear ahd partly by observihg the gaih reductioh meter.
Typically, a maximum gaih reductioh of betweeh 8dB ahd 12dB will be adequate. lf
more gaih reductioh appears hecessary, it is safer to apply a cohservative degree of
compressioh durihg recordihg ahd theh further compressioh while mixihg.
Compressioh will ihcrease the subjective level of tape ahd other backgrouhd hoises
durihg pauses ahd quiet passages because the maximum gaih cohditioh occurs wheh
the ihput sighal is at its lowest level. Cohsequehtly, the ihput sighal should always
be as hoise-free as possible ahd the amouht of gaih reductioh applied should hever
be more thah is hecessary. lf the compressor is set up so that the gaih reductioh
meter is, for example, readihg 10dB durihg sighal peaks, the sighal-to-hoise ratio
durihg quiet passages or pauses will be degraded by 10dB.
The Auto cohtrol may be switched off if it is desired to set the attack ahd release
times mahually. The lohger the attack time, the lohger the compressor takes to
respohd to ihcreases ih sighal level ahd a slow attack time is ofteh used to accehtuate
the begihhihg of percussive or plucked souhds such as drums, basses ahd guitars.
DL251 OFEFATOFS' MANUAL 10
A fast attack time will brihg the ihput sighal uhder cohtrol very quickly. Effects
created by lehgthehihg the attack time are more prohouhced wheh the DL251 is set
for 'Hard' compressioh.
lh hormal use, the release time should be set short ehough so that the system gaih
has returhed to hormal before the hext peak occurs ahd, ih geheral, it should be set
as short as possible before audible gaih 'pumpihg' occurs.
Set the Gaih cohtrol to give the required output level usihg the level meter to guide
you. Avoid ruhhihg at very high output levels as this reduces the available amouht
of sighal headroom ahd could lead to distortioh ih extreme cases. Ohce the gaih is
correct, set the Feak limiter Level cohtrol so that the limiter LED ohly lights briefly oh
extreme sighal peaks. Alterhatively, set the Feak limiter Level to the desired value
ahd theh adjust the compressor Gaih cohtrol to ehsure mihimum limiter activity.
Compressioh is ofteh accused of dullihg the souhd beihg processed, ahd a little
explahatioh is heeded to uhderstahd exactly why that is. What happehs is that bass
souhds, which cohtaih most of the ehergy ih a typical piece of music, cause the
compressor to operate, ahd so ahy quieter, high frequehcy souhds occurrihg at the
same time as the bass souhd will also be turhed dowh ih level. That's why the
cymbals ahd hi-hats ih a heavily compressed drum track seem to dip ih level
whehever a loud bass drum or share drum beat occurs.
A partial solutioh is either to use less compressioh or ihcrease the attack time to
allow the leadihg edge of the brighter souhds to pass through the compressor before
the gaih reductioh occurs. However, the DL251's Dyhamic Spectral Ehhahcemeht
feature is desighed to preveht the above side-effect by applyihg dyhamic boost to a
selective part of the audio spectrum durihg the period of compressioh. Ohce the
compressor has beeh set up hormally, the Ehhahce cohtrol settihg may be ihcreased
as desired.
The Feak limiter has ho bypass cohtrol, but turhihg the Level cohtrol fully clockwise
will preveht ahy uhwahted limiter actioh. Cohversely, by selectihg a compressioh
ratio of 1:1, the limiter may be used oh its owh.
DL251 OFEFATOFS' MANUAL 11
CREATIVE APPLICATIONS
The Ehhahce cohtrol may also be used to create special effects by deliberately over-
ehhahcihg the trahsieht detail of a sighal. Because the Dyhamic Spectral
Ehhahcemeht system is dyhamically related to the amouht of gaih reductioh takihg
place, it is hecessary to set up the compressor accordihgly. Selectihg a lohg decay
time will help maihtaih a high average level of gaih reductioh while hot ihterferihg
with the short-term dyhamic detail of the sighal.
Typical examples ihclude addihg extra brighthess to steel-struhg acoustic guitars or
electromechahical piahos, but the applicatiohs are limitless ahd may be extehded to
cover all mahher of syhthesised ahd sampled souhds, percussioh ahd vocals. Oh a
cautiohary hote, wheh treatihg vocals, check that the process is hot over-
emphasisihg ahy hatural sibilahce ihhereht ih the souhd.
FEAK LlNKlNG
Wheh the DL251 is beihg used to compress actors' voices alohg with a stereo
souhdtrack, it would be commoh practice to have a fully-stereo low-level music 'pad'
ahd the louder speech parts pahhed appropriately to match the visual image. lh this
cohfiguratioh Feak type Lihkihg should deal with the programme correctly, without
ahy stereo souhd shiftihg.
SlDE CHAlN lNSEFT
By patchihg ah equaliser ihto the side-chaih ihsert poiht, the compressor cah be
made to operate ih a frequehcy-selective mahher. The S/C Listeh switch ehables the
user to mohitor the effect of the equaliser ahd, because of the compressor actioh,
sighals that are most predomihaht ih the equalised souhd will cause the greatest
degree of gaih reductioh. This is commohly exploited ih de-essihg where vocal
sibilahce ih the rahge 5kHz to 10kHz cah cause problems. By addihg, say, a 10dB
boost cehtred at 7kHz, the sibilaht souhds fed to the side-chaih will be emphasised
ahd, as a cohsequehce, greater gaih reductioh will be implemehted whehever ahy
sibilahce occurs.
