Catholic Church dismay over report of votebuying in EV

The Catholic Church expressed disappointment on rampant votebuying practice in the region that occurred d ay s a he a d of Mondays election. Fr. Amadeo Alvero, sp okesp ers on of t he a rc h d i o c e s e of Pa l o said that we could expect that corruption will continue to tint local governance in the next three years since candidates have to seek return of all their election expense. I urge candidates to stop it. They have to respect the votes of the electorate by not wooing voters with money. Be honorable to page 4

CATARMAN, Northern Samar The municipal mayor of San Roque in the province of Northern Samar is in critical state while two other local candidates were injured after the private helicopter they were riding made a false landing in barangay Rawis, Laoang town Tuesday morning. San Roque Mayor Andre Abalon sustained a skull fracture and was transported to Cebu City for immediate medical attention, according to their family friend, Dr. Warren Otadoy. As of now, he is relatively stable, but we cannot be sure of his condition in the next hours, We need to transport him to a hospital with better facilities, Otadoy

Abalon along with two running mates, Decoroso Asinas and former board member Epifanio Pinca were aboard the private helicopter owned by Northern Samar second district Representative Emil Ong when they crash landed along the shore of Barangay Rawis, Laoang town 50 kilometers east of this capital town. According to the initial report from the Police Regional Office in Eastern Visayas, the chopper RPC 7788 was manned by its pilot Captain Dino Garcia. The accident that

occurred at around 9:30 Tuesday morning was reportedly due to engine failure. The pilot was unscathed while the two other passengers, Asinas and Pinca suffered minor injuries and now being treated at the CDH. Lawyer Don Abalon, brother of the mayor, said the pilot did not get out of the chopper while the other passengers jumped out when they sensed the accident. ONE of the biggest challenges of schools, and even before the schools, the family, the parents especially, is how to deal with young people who because of current world conditions are increasingly restless and critical of just about anything. A lot of complaints and laments come my way from both parents and teachers who are finding it harder to deal with their children and students these days. They say the young ones seem to be living in a completely different world thats almost impossible for them to enter. Im sure that the unavoidable generation gap is getting more complicated precisely because of the many developments sprouting up in the world today, and many of them are competing and conflicting with each other. This situation obviously leaves many young people confounded, not knowing how to prioritize things, since they clearly do not know many things yet, like the proper values and principles to follow in life, and their very own selves their strengths and weaknesses. They often are simply guided by what they call as what comes naturally, which at a closer look is none other than simply following the impulses of the flesh and the logic of the world. They are at the mercy of their emotions and the fads and trends around without knowing their proper foundation and objective. They dont realize that the emotions and the worldly fads and trends need to be purified precisely because they are often products of our weakened and wounded nature that gives greater stress to the external over the internal, the material over the spiritual, appearance over substance, the passing over the permanent. The complicating thing about all this is that todays youth are exposed to a lot of fascinating novelties, info and data from different

sourcesmedia, cyberspace, cults and sects, etc.that reinforce their views and opinions about practically anything. They learn how to defend themselves relatively well. They can answer back. In short, theres a tendency for them to bypass the natural authority of parents and teachers. They can be guided only by their own selves, to the point that they think this attitude is precisely the very expression of freedom. In short, they become easy prey to the sweet poison of presumption. In the face of all this, we should not lose hope. Theres always hope. Truth, goodness and beauty in the end can never lose. Its true that the way to them may be strewn with difficulties, but a way to them there always is. And that is to keep our faith and hope in God burning, and made to impact precisely on the concrete situations and challenges of our life, and not kept to freeze in some holy place or moment of our life detached from our flowing real time. Truth is all these difficulties and challenges are calls for us to grow more mature as persons and children of God, furthering our virtues and our faith and love for God and everybody else. We should respond to these calls as valiantly as possible, never allowing ourselves to be dominated by fears and doubts. We cannot deny the fact that theres actually nothing new under the sun. In spite of whatever, we are still creatures of God, children of his, created in his image and likeness and made to participate in his very own life not only in eternity, but also even here and now. We cannot deny the fact that deep within ones heart and soul still flickers the natural longing for God. Even if the flame is reduced to embers, the fire for God and for everything that leads to him can still be recovered and made to roar. This is the challenge of the parents and teachers. It is how to reach that part of the heart and soul of the youth and stir it into vibrant life with God and with every-

body else. For this, I suppose, we have use all the means available, the spiritual and supernatural, the old and the new, the natural and human. We need to do a lot of prayers, of making sacrifices, of going to the sacraments. We need to spend time with the youth, knowing them thoroughly to the point of being familiar with the way they think and react to things, and motivating them, giving them consistently good example, always showing affection and understanding even if we have to give indications, suggestions or even corrections.

The Seven Deadly Sins

Tickler
Josie Buna Amano

If they really like and love their parents and teachers because of the way we treat them, then victory is just assured.

They are also known as the seven capital sins. I would like to take PRIDE as the first on the list. It makes one become self-centered or the masyadong bilib sa sarili attitude. As if one is at the top the world. Pride looks down on others dahil ako lang ang mas magaling at marunong (because I am a better and more intelligent than others). Oftentimes we forget that there will always be people greater and lesser than us. Saying sorry is not part of its vocabulary being too proud to say so. This affects our recognition on God and others. But pride is not all that bad as we are proud of our humble beginnings, of our plans, aspirations and success. Just dont go beyond bounds so as not to fall into sin or better yet, depart from it and take humility in everyday dealings. SLOTH comes next. The

dictionary defines the word as an extreme laziness or idleness. When I was a kid, sometimes I feel lazy to fulfill my duties at home and promise to do it the next day. My father used to remind me never to putoff until tomorrow what can you do today. Indeed tomorrow is another day which means other chores awaits to be performed. Everything happens for a reason so to speak. Like why do we need to work? Simply because we have to eat in order to survive, clothe ourselves and provide a roof over our heads. When we are lazy to find a job even a manual labor to say the least basic needs cannot be met or sustained. I often hear no work, no pay from my folks. So how do you utilize the physical and mental well-being that God has provided you with? Surely you have an answer when His accounting comes. WRATH is violent anger or rage. Have you ever been in a situation where you want to accomplish a certain task instantly? Only to realize that it is not possible. Then you get angry. Some people

change the mood on a slight provocation the lady next to might be laughing and gay a while ago then suddenly shes gone mad. It is human to get angry. Too much anger is another story that may lead to fearful situations damage to property, tarnished relationships, and even death. In Life Lessons for Men, a quotation says that Anger is momentary madness, so control your passion or it will control you. GLUTTONY is the act or habit of eating or drinking too much. Pakikisama is one of the Filipino values that is commonly practiced. We love to entertain and be entertained. Food that stirs the very core of your appetite and drinks are usually highlights every occasion. We need to belong with our friends and associates that sometimes last until 4:00am! Such excessive enjoyment wastes our precious time and endangers our health. How about your neighbor who barely eats three square meals a day, have you forgotten them or you dont see them at all? Sharing is one of the best gifts in life than can be offered to those in need.

The first Red Cross Day was celebrated on 8 May 1948. The official title of the day has changed over time, and it became World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day in 1984. A new study from the University of Colorado Cancer Center reveals that bitter melon juice restricts the ability of pancreatic cancer cells to metabolize glucose, thus cutting the cells energy source and eventually killing them. The findings of the study were published in the journal Carcinogenesis. Three years ago researchers showed the effect of bitter melon extract on breast cancer cells only in a Petri dish. This study goes much, much farther, says Rajesh Agarwal, PhD, co-program leader of Cancer Prevention and Control at the CU Cancer Center and professor at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. We used the juice people especially in Asian countries are already consuming it in quantity. We show that it affects the glucose metabolism pathway to restrict energy and kill pancreatic cancer cells. Argwal became interested in bitter melon juice by connecting the dots of existing research in new ways. Pancreatic cancer is typically preceded by diabetes, and bitter melon juice has been shown to effect typeII diabetes. It has been used for centuries in the folk medicines of China and India to combat diabetes.

Argwal and colleagues wondered what would happen if they left diabetes out of the equation and directly examined the link between pancreatic cancer and bitter melon. Argwal says the result is an alteration in metabolic events in pancreatic cancer cells and an activation of theAMP-activated protein kinase, an enzyme that indicates low energy levels in the cells. Bitter melon also regulates insulin secretion by pancreatic beta cells. The mouse model of pancreatic cancer was fed bitter melon juice after studies of cell cultures were done. Compared to the control group, the mice fed the bitter melon juice were 60 percent less likely to develop pancreatic cancer. Its a very exciting finding, Agarwal says. Many researchers are engineering new drugs to target cancer cells ability to supply themselves with energy, and here we have a naturally-occurring compound that may do just that. Argwals team is applying for grants to allow them to continue studying bitter melon in further chemoprevention trials in mouse models of pancreatic cancer.

MLhuiller conducts medical mission

The Tulay ng Pilipino conducts a Medical Mission in Luis Hervias National High School of Negros Occidental. The project was made successful last April 13, 2013, through coordination with the Bing Health representatives and officers from the participating school. Needed medical services were made available for almost a hundred beneficiaries residing within the area. Such as ECG, urinalysis, FBS and blood pressure taking. Volunteer doctors came to provide checkups, free consultations and prescriptions to aid the speedy recovery of existing minor illnesses and attend to the overall health issues of patients. Over the counter drugs and vitamins were given to all locals especially kids who graced the event. M Lhuillier Philippines also gave out t-shirts, towels and other useful items to all the attendees. A symposium on Good Parenting was also conducted. While health is a major concern among parents, it is of equal importance that they should be equipped with the knowledge and skills on how to care and guide their children for them to grow up as responsible and concerned individuals.
