To quickly install and configure MSC Nastran according to your personal preferences ces and company guidelines, refer to the Installation and Operations Guide. MSC Nastran / MD Nastran Unification The MSC Nastran 2012 release includes the unification of the MD brand and the MSC brand of the Nastran products into a single MSC Nastran brand. Your existing xisting license files will work with this release. In some cases, additional license features will be required to access some of the new capabilities. Upon obtaining updated license features, existing MSC base users will have access to the following additional capabilities: Linear Contact (Includes Glued and Touching Contact) Local Adaptive Meshing for Linear Analysis Linear Composite Beam Those users who have an MSC license with Dynamics access will now have access to the FRF/FBA capabilities. Enterprise Advantage Users will continue to see a reduction in the number of tokens consumed when running MSC Nastran versus MD Nastran for jobs, such as: (Please note this is only a partial list.) Linear Statics Linear Dynamics Dynamics with Optimization Jobs using any of the following capabilities will continue to draw at equivalent MD Nastran rates. Token consumption values for these features under MSC Nastran are shown in the parentheses. The MSC Nastran Base will continue to consume 250 tokens. Linear Contact (78) SOL 400 Implicit NL (153) SOL 700 Explicit NL (39 for the Explicit Translator) Multi-Model Optimization (78)

The MSC Nastran 2012 release also includes support for use of a GPU for parallel processing. This capability is available as an optional module for MSC Nastran seat customers and will be included in the tokens system with a consumption of 50 tokens when used. Other changes with this release include a tiered token consumption rate for the MSC Nastran SOL 600 DDM. The following rates will apply based on the number of cores being used. 2nd core 3rd and 4th cores th th 5 through 8 cores th 9 through 16 th cores th nd 17 through 32 core 33rd core and above = 40 tokens = 25 tokens per core = 15 tokens per core = 12 tokens per core = 9 tokens per core = 6 tokens per core

Please read before installing MSC Nastran 2012

This document provides important information about MSC Nastran not contained in the Release Guide or Installation and Operations Guide. It is intended to help you install and use MSC Nastran. The MSC Software Development Kit 2012.1 is required for users who want to customize MD Nastran 2012.1 with features like User Subroutines, User Defined Modules, OpenFSI, and Beam Libraries. The SDK can be downloaded separately from the MSC Software Development Kit product page.

MSC Licensing
The MSC Licensing software is now delivered via its own Product Page on the SDC. Installers for the MSC Licensing software are provided on a number of hardware platforms. Delivering the MSC Licensing software separately from the individual MSC products will allow us to provide you updates to the licensing software more effectively. If there are any questions, please contact MSC Technical Support pport for assistance.

Please note the following changes made to this product family with this release, as well as to its licensing system. 1. This release of Nastran requires MSC.Licensing 11.9 11. which is included in the software files/media; please note that this release will not work with the MSC.Licensing 9.2. For those that desire a flexible licensing model, MD Nastran is available with our MasterKey license system. This flexible licensing system allows the sharing of tokens with other MSC.Software solutions.

Known Issues with this release

Distributed Memory Parallel is often not effective if the models are too small. small It is recommended that the number of processors is chosen such that there are between 0.3 M DOF and 1.M DOF per processors Complex stress recovery is only available at a ply level when using the PCOMP or PCOMPG option and the SMEAR feature is not used.

Documentation
Two new examples for SOL 700 Explicit solver were not available in the time of release in the MSC Nastran Demonstration Manual. These are: Blast example to import Euler Archive files with DMP (example ch075) Thermal analysis using SOL 700 (Ch076) These will be posted to SimCompanion.

For installations on the Windows Compute Cluster Server (CCS), the following environment variable is required to run Nastran with DMP using the hosts= option: Environment Variable: CHKCCS. Value yes (note note that the value is in lower case) .
